Dubai floods
Dubai International Airport faced chaos on Tuesday (April 16), as heavy rains caused flash floods that inundated the runway.
Dramatic footage captured a Flydubai Boeing 737 wading through the flash floods, highlighting the severity of the storm. The downpour forced multiple flight cancellations.
Planes arriving at the Dubai airport were also temporarily diverted on Tuesday evening to other locations until weather conditions improved, while the departures continued to operate.
Operations at DXB were suspended for 25 minutes earlier in the day because of a storm.
Meanwhile, some residents in Dubai used a rubber boat on Tuesday to move around the flooded streets after a storm hit the emirate.
Earlier on Monday, Dubai Police issued a public safety advisory alerting residents to the adverse weather conditions.
The UAE's National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) stated that from Tuesday afternoon to early Wednesday morning (April 17), another wave of unstable weather was expected to begin from Western areas and spread across scattered areas of the country.
Meanwhile, at least 17 people were killed after flash floods swept through various parts of Oman on Sunday (April 14) and Monday (April 15), the country's National Committee for Emergency Management reported.
The state-run WAM news agency called the rains a historic weather event that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.
Schools across the UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, largely shut ahead of the storm and government employees worked remotely. Those who ventured out, unfortunately, ended up with their vehicles stuck in deeper-than-expected water covering some roads.
Authorities sent tanker trucks out into the streets and highways to pump away the water. Water poured into some homes, forcing people to leave their houses.
