US presidential election: Is Trump dodging Sept 10 debate amid rising poll numbers for Harris?

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested on Sunday (Aug 25) that he might skip the September 10 ABC News debate with Democratic presidential candidate and current United States Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I watched ABC FAKE NEWS this morning, both lightweight reporter Jonathan Carl’s (K?) ridiculous and biased interview of Tom Cotton (who was fantastic!), and their so-called Panel of Trump Haters, and I ask, why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” Trump said in a post on his social network, Truth Social.

The September 10 ABC News debateis the only one that both the Trump and Harris campaignsofficially committed to with a network. This was not the first time that Trump suggestedhe would back out of the ABC News debate.

Earlier in August, the former president said he wouldno longer appear at the September 10 debate,previously scheduled with President Joe Biden before he dropped out of the race,and would only debate Harris at a September 4debate hosted by Fox News.
However, a few days later, Trump said he would debate Harris on ABC and also proposed debates on NBC and Fox.
Is Trump dodging debate?
A report by The Washington Post early Monday said thatTrump’s renewed questioning of the ABC News debate came amid Kamala Harris increasingher lead in national polls, and was gaining groundin key Midwestern swing states, the report said.

As of Sunday, the publication's polling average showed Harrisleading in Wisconsin by three points, in Pennsylvania by two points and in Michigan by less than one point.
Trump, meanwhile, was continuing to leadin the Sun Belt states, but Harris has significantly narrowed the gap.
With just two weeks left for the September 10 presidential debate, the Trump and Harris campaignshave hit an impasse over whether the candidates’ microphones will be muted when it is not their turn to speak, Politico reported on Monday citing sources.
