US 2024 Election: Republicans win Senate majority, regain control of chamber

US Senate race

Republicans have won the majority in the Senate after Senator Deb Fischer secured a reelection in Nebraska. They also flipped two key Democratic-held seats in Ohio and West Virginia. Republican Ted Cruz of Texas also won a third term in office.

As per Associated Press, the party has secured at least 51 seats.

This will be the first time in four years that the GOP will take control of the Upper House. They would have a major say in the election of any Supreme Court justice, in case there is a vacancy, and also hold deciding say in confirming the new Cabinet.

Since 1992, every nonincumbent president has come to power with their party controlling both chambers of Congress. However, this year neither Kamala Harris nor Donald Trump are expected to do so.

As per NBC projections, Republicans will pick up an open seat in deep-red West Virginia, as Gov. Jim Justice has won the election and will succeed Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin who is retiring.

In Ohio, a red state, Republican candidate Bernie Moreno has defeated Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, NBC News projected.

The Republicans also look set to flip a Democratic-held seat in Montana. Democratic Sen. Jon Tester might fall short in the race against GOP rival Tim Sheehy.

Meanwhile, the purple states, extremely competitive in the presidential election, can go either here or there. Democrats are trying to defend five seats in these states. Senator Bob Casey in Pennsylvania; an open seat in Michigan, where Sen. Debbie Stabenow is retiring; Sen. Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin; an open seat in Arizona, where Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Krysten Sinema is retiring; and Sen. Jacky Rosen in Nevada.

Ted Cruz's win in Texas further dented Democratic plans of taking control of the Senate.

In Florida, a state that leans towards the Republicans, Senator Rick Scott, R-Fla., defeated former Democratic Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and won the re-election. Some of the Democrats believed that things could change in Florida, but that didn't happen.
