Ukraine war: Russia must feel consequences of its invasion, says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyon Thursday (Aug 8) said that Russia must feel the consequences of its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In his evening address, President Zelensky said, "Russia brought the war to our land and should feel what it has done."

"Ukrainians know how to achieve their goals. And we did not choose to achieve our goals in the war," Zelensky added. The Ukrainian president also said, "Everyone can see that the Ukrainian army knows how to surprise (and)achieve results."

Ukraine presses on with major offensive

Zelensky's remarks came as the Ukrainian militarypressed on with a major cross-border incursion into Russia on Friday, which includeda significant air attack on a Russian airfield hundreds of kilometres behind the front lines.

A report by the news agency AFP said that the Ukrainian offensive into Russia's western Kursk regionappears to be the most significant attack on Russian soil since Moscow invaded in February 2022.

This offensive has been going on since Tuesday (Aug 6), and Kyiv has not officially taken responsibility for the operation.

On Friday (Aug 9), the Ukrainian military said thatit had carried out a massive air strike on a Russian military base in the Lipetsk region, around 280 kilometres (175 miles) from the Russia-Ukraineborder.

The local Russian governor Igor Artamonov reported a "massive" drone attack, and state media said that the airfield was on fire.

Russia destroys multiple Ukrainian drones

The Russian defence ministry said that it destroyed75 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 19 over the Lipetsk region and seven over Kursk. The ministry said that several nautical drones headed for the annexed peninsula of Crimea were also destroyed,AFP reported.

Moscow has also not presented detailed information on the extent of the Ukrainian incursion of Kursk.However, the independent United States-based Institute for the Study of War saidUkrainehad made significant territorial advances.
