UK police conduct 'controlled explosion' outside US embassy; bomb squad deployed near Gatwick airport

UKpolice reported on Friday (Nov 22) that officers conducted a controlled explosion outside the United States embassy in London after a "suspicious package" was discovered. The incident occurred near the high-security embassy in Nine Elms, just south of the River Thames.
In a statement shared on X, the Metropolitan Police confirmed, "We can confirm that the 'loud bang' reported in the area a short time ago was a controlled explosion carried out by officers." The police added that investigations were ongoing and cordons around the site would remain in place. "Enquiries are still ongoing and cordons will remain in place for the time being," it added.
The US embassy also took to X and said, "Local authorities are investigating a suspicious package outside the embassy," the statement read. A nearby road was closed "out of an abundance of caution," it added.
Bomb Squad called to Gatwick airport
While police managed the situation in London, another security incident took place at Gatwick Airport. A bomb disposal unit was deployed to the airport’s South Terminal after a "suspected prohibited item" was detected in a passenger's luggage.

Sussex Police responded to the incident at 8:20 am (local time)on Friday. "Police were called to the South Terminal at Gatwick Airport at 8.20am on Friday following the discovery of a suspected prohibited item in luggage. As a precaution, an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team is being deployed to the airport," it said in a statement.
Gatwick Airport, located about 30 miles south of London, confirmed the evacuation on social media platform X. The airport said that a large part of its South Terminal has been evacuated as a precaution while we continue to investigate a security incident.
"Passengers will not be able to enter the South Terminal while this is ongoing. Safety and security of our passengers and staff remains our top priority," the airport said. “We are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
