Texas church shooter identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26

The Texas church shooter has been identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26.

The New York Times, quoting law enforcement officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity since the investigation is continuing, said Kelley had served in the Air Force but was court-martialled in 2012 on charges of assaulting his wife and child.

The Times added that Kelley was sentenced to 12 months' confinement and received a bad conduct discharge in 2014.

Media reports said Kelley was thought to have lived in New Braunfels, a city on the outskirts of San Antonio, about 35 miles from where the attack took place.

News reports said Kelley had walked into the church a little before noon, and that he had fired his weapon before walking in.

The reports added that he had been dressed all in black, that he had been armed with an assault rifle, and that he had been wearing a ballistic vest.

Kelley had recently shown off an AR-15 rifle on Facebook; the photograph had been captioned "bad b***h".

Kelley died shortly after the attack. It is not clear whether he took his own life or whether he was shoot by police.

The Independent reported that Kelley was believed to have taught Bible studies at Kingsville First Baptist Church.

He had finally attacked the First Baptist Church at Sutherland Springs.
