Doctors without Borders (MSF) said on Sunday (May 26) that at least 134 people died in a single hospital inEl-Fasher, Darfur, Sudan. The casualties included one member of the MSF. War in Sudanhas raged on for more than a year between the regular military under army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
El-Fasher is the only state capital in the country's western region that is not under RSF controland has emerged as akeyhumanitarian hub. A report by the news agency AFP said thatEl-Fasher has seen sporadic clashes since the war broke out in April 2023, but fierce fightingreignited on May 10.
The MSF said on Sunday that its member was killed on Saturday when shelling hit his house.He was takento Southern Hospital, North Darfur state's only remaining hospital, where he died.

"The death toll has reached 134 -- a sign of the violent intensity of the fighting", the MSF said. However, AFP reported that theactual death toll could be much higher, as many residents have not beenleaving their homes because of the fighting, even for emergency medical care.
The report further said thatShellingand gunfire had spread across El-Fasher.
The United Nations (UN) said that supplies at the Southern Hospital would last barely a week.Aid groups have repeatedly pleaded for safe access into the city to allow them to replenish depleted stocks and support exhausted medical teams, AFP reported.

But an effective siege continues, with the UN reporting key roads "either blocked, subject to significant barriers to movement or unsafe."
