Navalny wrote the entire memoir titled Patriot with some parts dictated. His wife, Yulia Navalnaya who is working with the publishers to edit the manuscript said, "Sharing his story will not only honour his memory but also inspire others to stand up for what is right and to never lose sight of the values that truly matter."

According to her, the memoir will be “a testament not only to Alexei’s life but to his unwavering commitment to the fight against dictatorship – a fight he gave everything for, including his life.” Navalnaya hopes that through 'Patriot', readers will come to know the man she loved deeply.

"It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, and his commitment to the cause of Russian democracy and freedom in the face of a world super-power determined to silence him," Knopf's statement read.

"It expresses Navalny's total conviction that change cannot be resisted and will come," the publisher added.

Who was Alexei Navalny?

Alexei Navalny began his career as a lawyer and became Russia’s prominent anti-corruption activist. He led the political opposition in President Vladimir Putin’s Russia and founded the Anti-Corruption Foundation.

Navalny received the Sakharov Award for “individuals, groups and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to protecting freedom of thought” from the European Union in 2021. He was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent in August 2020 and blamed Putin for the incident.

Navalny was sentenced to nine years in a maximum security penal colony for fraud in a trial that some independent international observers labelled as a sham. In August 2023, he was sentenced to an additional 19 years in prison for 'extremism'. He passed away on 16 February 2024 in a Russian prison at the age of 47.
