Pakistan has deployed three companies of its army in Rawalpindi for six months to undertake "sensitive security duties", according to an official order issued by the country’s Interior Ministry. The deployment comes at the request of the Punjab home department, based on a letter dated July 22, 2026.
Three companies of the Pakistan Army will be deployed in the city under Article 245 of the Pakistani Constitution, according to which the armed forces are allowed to assist the civil administration in maintaining security, reported Pakistan Observer.
A notification has been issued by the Ministry of Interior in this regard.
"The federal government, exercising the powers conferred under Article 245 of the Constitution of Pakistan, is pleased to authorise the deployment of three companies of the Pakistan Army for sensitive security duties in Rawalpindi," read the notification issued by the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control on Friday.
The deployment will help strengthen security at sensitive areas and key roads. It will help the district administration in dealing with any untoward situation and help maintain a secure environment in the city.
However, the government is yet to specify any particular incident, threat or security challenge that led to deployment of the Pakistani army.
The move comes days after a man allegedly linked to former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party opened fire at security forces in Rawalpindi. He was killed in retaliatory firing.
