A high court in Pakistan's capital Islamabad granted bail to the wife of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan in a case pertaining to the illegal sale of state gifts, local broadcaster Geo TV reported on Wednesday (Oct 23).

Both Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, are currently in jail on multiple charges including illegally selling gifts worth more than 140 million rupees ($501,000) received during his 2018-2022 premiership from a state treasury locally known as the "Toshakhana".

New Toshakhana reference

In September, a Rawalpindi court extended the remand of the former Pakistan PM and his wife in a new Toshakhana reference.

The new Toshakhana reference is about a jewellery set gifted to Bushra Bibi by the Saudi crown prince when Khan was the prime minister of Pakistan.

Khan's defence lawyer argued during the hearing saying the new reference was similar to the previous one, hence two separate references could not be filed in the same accusation.

The prosecutor said the defence lawyer's claim could not be proved without matching the particulars of both references.

Eventually, the judge extended the judicial remand of the couple till September 16.

Khan and his wife filed separate post-arrest bail pleas in the new Toshakhana case last week.

Charges against Bibi

Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan's third wife, was arrested in January on charges of violating her Iddat period (the waiting period for marriage of a woman after her divorce or husband's death).

She was later also charged inthe Toshakhana case.
