New York Governor Hochul’s ex-aide indicted for being Chinese agent

New York Governor Hochul’s ex-aide indicted for being Chinese agent

New York Governor Kathy Hochul's former aide has beencharged with acting as a foreign agent for China. Linda Sun (41) was arrested alongside her husband, Christopher Hu, on Tuesday (Sep 2) and indicted withespionage charge a day later,according to court documents.

Sun held a series of positions within the New York State government from 2012 to 2023 - includingdeputy chief of staff to Hochul for a year, beginning in September 2021.

While working in the state government, Sun reportedly blocked representatives of the Taiwanese government from meeting with officials. Instead, she sought to arrange for a high-level New York state official to visit China.

"Acting at the request of PRC government officials and the [Communist Party of China] representative, Sun engaged in numerous political activities in the interests of the PRC and the CCP," the indictment noted.

Sun and Hu owna mansion worth millions in New York's posh Long Island. The court documents revealed that sheallegedly laundered kickbacks to purchase the expensive property.According to state payroll records, Sun only made $152,217 during her last full year working for the Department of Labor.

In exchange for her loyalty, Chinese government representatives also facilitated millions of dollars in transactions for Hu. who had business activities in China. Prosecutors revealed that other giftsincluded Nanjing-style salted ducks prepared by a Chinese government official's personal chef and delivered to the home of Sun's parents.

Sun is being charged withviolating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy.

Hochul's office issues clarification

Hochul's office released a statement after Sun's indictment stating that her employment was terminated in 2023.

“We terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct, immediately reported her actions to law enforcement and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process,” saidHochul’s press secretary Avi Small.

Even after her employment was terminated, Sunattended "public and professional Asian community events purporting to represent the Department of Labor while claiming to be the Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Labor", the indictment noted.

Last month, a Queens resident named Yuanjun Tang was also arrested forallegedly spying for China on pro-democracy activists and dissidents whilst making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to the Department of Justice, Yuanjunacted as a Chinese agent between 2019 and 2023 under the direction of China's Ministry of State Security (MSS), its principal intelligence agency.
