A Mexico city court has ruled in favour of Frida Kahlo's family as it halted the sales of Barbie dolls depicting the influential Mexican artist.

The case was filed by Frida Kahlo's great-niece Mara De Anda Romeo against the US Toymaker company, Mattel argued that the company does not have rights to use the Mexican icon's image in their toys.

Mattel Inc had launched a series of Barbie dolls styled after influential women in which they also made a barbie of Frida Kahlo.

Until the issue is resolved the department stores of Mexico and the toymaker company cannot commercialise the doll.

However, the company has claimed on its website that they have reached an agreement with Frida Kahlo corporation in order to use the artist's imagery to manufacture doll.

Frida Kahlo Corporation, on its website, says that it owns the trademark rights to the artist's image worldwide.

The media reports have quoted Mattel company saying that the Frida Kahlo Corporation ''actively participated in the process of designing the doll'' while adding that the company has its permission and a legal contract that grants rights to make a doll of the Frida Kahlo.

Mattel has further claimed that it got rights from Kahlo's another niece, Isolda Pineda Kahlo more than a decade ago.

Kahlo's image and her extensive body of work have been widely commercialized as the artist's popularity have grown. She has been regarded as one of the greatest painters of 20th century.
