Iran’s Quds Force chief Esmail Qaani 'confirmed' in good health after death rumours

Chief of Iran’s elite Quds Force Esmail Qaani

Iran's Quds Force leader, Esmail Qaani, is "in good health" and continuing his duties, according to Iraj Masjedi, the force’s deputy commander. Masjedi made this statement on Monday after Iranian security sources told Reuters that Qaani had not been reachable since the attacks on Beirut the previous week.

"He is in good health and is carrying out his activities. Some ask us to issue a statement... there is no need for this," Masjedi was quoted as saying by state media in response to rumours about Qaani's status.

These comments followed reports in various media outlets, including Turkish and Israeli sources, which speculated that Qaani might have been killed. The New York Times also reported similar claims, citing anonymous Iranian IRGC officials, though Iranian authorities did not officially confirmany such reports.

There have also been claims that Qaani was being closely monitored after Iran's missile strikes on October 1, sparking concerns that Israel might take action against him. Some Saudi news outlets suggested that Qaani could have been executed by Iran, possibly due to suspicions of him working with Israel's intelligence agency,Mossad.

During a recent strike, Qaani was in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut, which is known as a stronghold for Hezbollah. The strike was believed to have been aimed at senior Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine, but officials said Qaani was not meeting him at the time.

Israel has launched several attacks in Dahiyeh as part of its broader efforts to target Hezbollah, a group supported by Iran.

Qaani took over leadership of the Quds Force, the overseas military-intelligence arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, after the USkilled his predecessor, Qassem Soleimani, in a 2020 drone strike in Baghdad. Since then, Qaani has played a crucial role in overseeing Iran’s military operations in the region.
