Iranian teen who vanished from 2022 protests was ‘beaten to death’: Report

An Iranian teen who abruptly vanished from the 2022 Iran protests was sexually assaulted and beaten to death by Iranian security officials, BBC has reported, citing a secret document.
The 16-year-old girl, Nika Shakarami, was allegedly leading anti-Hijab protests in the capital Tehran. Her dead bodywas recoverednine days after her disappearanceanda government-initiated probe had stated that she killed herself by suicide.
However, according to the media report, she was brutally tortured in the back of a van. Members of the Iranian security forces used batons and Taser guns to bring her under control. Later, they sexually assaulted her and dumped her body on a street.
September 2022 protests
Iran witnessed nationwide anti-government protests in September 2022 following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in custody. Nika Shakarami led protests against mandatory dress rules for women andwas later detained.
According to the secret document, whichis basedon conversations with security officers who were involved in Shakarami’s detention, she came under authority’s radar after shewas filmedstanding on a dumpster during a demonstration and burning hijabs.

Team 12, a security unit on the ground, was given the responsibility of detaining the 16-year-old girl.
Shakarami initially managed to escape but was eventually arrested that night andwas putin the back of a van. At least three Team 12 members, Arash Kalhor, Sadegh Monjazy, and Behrooz Sadeghy, were with the girl in the compartment.
According to the document, Sadegh Monjazy later became aroused as he wrestled with the defiant girl and ‘groped her buttocks.’
After hearing the noises coming from the back, when Jalil, the leader of the unit sitting in the driver's cabin, went to check what was going on, he found the girl had died.
Jalil later talked to one of his seniors, codenamed “Naeem 16”, and informed him about the situation.
Naeem instructed him to dump the body on a street as “he didn’t want to make matters worse by bringing Shakarami in.”
Shakarami’s mother later found her body at amortuary,with head injuries.
