Iran should cease all activities related to ballistic missiles to avoid deeper economic isolation: US

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo today warned Iran to "reconsider provocative launches and cease all activities related to ballistic missiles" even as Iran's health minister Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi resigned amid biting US sanctions on Tehran.
"The United States will not stand by and watch the Iranian regimes destructive policies place international stability and security at risk," Pompeo said, adding,"we advise the regime to reconsider these provocative launches and cease all activities related to ballistic missiles in order to avoid deeper economic and diplomatic isolation."
President Trump had reintroduced sanctions on Iran last year, targeting in country's oil sector including several other industries after pulling out of a 2015 nuclear deal. However, the US had granted waivers to eight key buyers of Iranian oil including China, India, Japan and Turkey.
Last month, President Rouhani had presented a $47 billion draft state budget with increased spending on lower income groups. The Iran president had pointed out that the US sanctions would affect people's lives and economic growth.
Pompeo had earlier urged the United Nations to tighten restrictions on Iran's missiles asserting that the Rohani regime had hundreds of missiles that could strike US allies.
Iran has "hundreds of missiles which pose a threat to our partners in the region," Pompeo had told the UN Security Council last month. During his address, Pompeo had informed that the United States would press to preserve a UN arms embargo on Iran due to expire in 2020.

President Rohani had called the US sanctions "economic terrorism", terming it "unjust" and "illegal". The Islamic state has repeatedly said in its defence that its missile programme is defensive and not in breach of UN resolutions after it tested a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads. Pompeo had condemned the testing.
The Iranian regime said it would continue to test missiles to build its defences and reinforce its deterrence.
President Donald Trump had pulled the US out of the nuclear deal with Iran last year after declaring it was a flawed deal as it did not curb Iran's development of ballistic missiles or its support for armed proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq.
