Iran foreign minister says killing of IRGC deputy commander 'will not go unanswered'

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, on Sunday (Sep 29), said that the killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Deputy Commander Brig General Abbas Nilforoushan in Lebanon by Israel in airstrikes "will not go unanswered".

Nilforoushan, the deputy commander of IRGC operations, was killed on Friday (Sep 27) in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, that also eliminated Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.

In 2022, Nilforoushan facedsanctions by the United Statesand the US said that he was “directly in charge of protest suppression” amid demonstrations in Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini following herarrest for allegedly not wearing her headscarf to the liking of police.

The IRCG released a statement on Saturday, describing him as the Revolutionary Guards'“military adviser in Lebanon.”

The statement praised Nilforoushan for his role in defending the “Resistance Front” and Iran and expressed condolences over his death to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, his family, comrades, and the people of Iran.
