Indian PM Modi meets Palestinian president, expresses deep concern over Gaza humanitarian crisis

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (Sep22) met Palestinian PresidentMahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the Summit of the Future in New York, United States (US).
According to the Indian foreign ministry, Prime Minister Modi expresseddeep concern at the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and the deteriorating security situation in the region.
The ministry said that Modireaffirmed India’s unwavering support to the people of Palestine, including continued humanitarian assistance.
Modi stresses two-state solution
"Prime Minister reiterated India's time-tested principled position on the Israel-Palestine issue, and called for ceasefire, release of hostages and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy," the ministry said.

"He stressed that only a two-state solution will deliver enduring peace and stability in the region. Recalling that India was one of the first countries to recognize Palestine, he conveyed India’s continued support to Palestine's membership of the UN," it added.
India's position on Gaza war
According to the Indian foreign ministry, New Delhihas strongly condemned theattacks on Israel on 7 October 2023 and also the loss of civilian lives in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
In a response to Parliament in August, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said thatIndia has called for a ceasefire and sustained humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

"During the ongoing conflict, India has provided 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid including 16.5 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies. We have also called for the release of remaining hostages," Singh said.
"We remain concerned at the deteriorating security situation and have called for restraint and de-escalation and emphasized a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy," he added.
