Indian student found dead in US: Another 25-year-old Indian-origin student, who had moved to the United States from Hyderabad, India in 2023, has been found dead, confirmed the Indian embassy in New York on Tuesday (April 9).

The student, Mohammed Abdul Arfath, was pursuing a Master's at Cleveland State University and had been missing for almost three weeks.

The embassy had earlier stated that they were in touch with Abdul's family and were trying to locate the Indian student with the help of the local law enforcement agencies.

On Tuesday morning (April 9), the embassy confirmed that the student was found dead.

"Anguished to learn that Mr Mohammed Abdul Arfath, for whom a search operation was underway, was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio. Our deepest condolences to Mr Mohammed Arfath's family," said the embassy, in a post on X.

"@IndiainNewYork is in touch with local agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into Mr Mohammed Abdul Arfath's death. We are extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family to transport his mortal remains to India," the embassy added.

He is the 11th Indian who has died in the United States this year. In most of the cases, the victims were generally students. 

Another 19-year-old student, Shreyas Reddy Beniger, who held an American passport, was found dead this year. The authorities ruled out any foul play.

Neel Acharya, another student of Purdue University, was found dead on the campus, hours after he was reported missing by his mother.

A 25-year-old student, Vivek Saini from Haryana, was hammered to death in Georgia's Lithonia by a homeless man on January 16.

Another Indian student, Akul Dhawan, was found dead outside the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in January. 

In the wake of similar cases being reported continuously, Indian students in the US and their families have been worried about their safety.

According to the data collected by the United States, in 2022-2023, more than 2.6 lakh Indian students were admitted to the universities of the country. This marked a 35 per cent increase from the previous session.
