New Delhi, India
India on Saturday (Nov 2) said that it had summoned a Canadian diplomat after an Ottawa minister claimed that Home Minister Amit Shah ordered the targeting of Khalistani extremists in Canada.
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that they had summoned the representative of the Canadian High Commission and a diplomatic note was handed to the official about the recent proceedings of Canada's Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security.
This comes after Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison on October 29 told Parliament members of the national security committee that India's home minister "ordered a campaign of violence, intimidation and intelligence-gathering" targeting Khalistani separatists in Canada.

MEA spokesperson said that a Canadian diplomat had been summoned and a diplomatic note was handed over, on Friday.
"It was conveyed in the note that the Government of India protests in the strongest terms to the absurd and baseless references made to the Union Home Minister of India before the Committee by Deputy Minister David Morrison," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

"In fact, the revelation that high Canadian officials deliberately leak unfounded insinuations to the international media as part of a conscious strategy to discredit India and influence other nations only confirms the view that the government of India has long held about the current Canadian government's political agenda and behavioral pattern. Such irresponsible actions will have serious consequences for bilateral ties," he added.
