Donald Trump said that any solution of the Russia-Ukraine war would come about in a possible second meeting, in the presence of Zelensky.

Ahead of his crucial meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that there is a 25 per cent chance that the meeting will fail. "This meeting sets up the second meeting, but there is a 25 percent chance that this meeting will not be a successful meeting," Donald Trump told a US channel.

Putin and Trump will meet at a military installation in the US state. This is the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine that a Western power has agreed to host the Russian President.

Donald Trump further said that any deal on ending Russia's invasion of Ukraine would come at a second, three-way meeting involving Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

With this remark, Trump has assured stakeholders that any decision about Ukraine wouldn't be taken unless Zelensky is party to the talks.

"The second meeting is going to be very, very important, because that's going to be a meeting where they make a deal. And I don't want to use the word 'divvy' things up. But you know, to a certain extent, it's not a bad term, okay?" Donald Trump added.

On Wednesday, Trump said the second meeting with Putin, involving Zelensky, could take place. However, he said, it would depend on what transpires in his meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska.

"To achieve peace, I think we all recognize that there'll have to be some conversation about security guarantees," he added.

Putin today praised the Trump administration for making "energetic and sincere" efforts to end the war in Ukraine. He also said that a nuclear arms control agreement could emerge from broader peace talks.

“The current American administration is making, in my opinion, quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the hostilities, stop the crisis, and reach agreements that are of interest to all parties involved in this conflict,” Putin said, according to The Kremlin.
