Elon Musk has sparked speculation about buying the US media network MSNBC after Donald Trump Jr. suggested the idea on social media.
Trump Jr. posted on X (formerly Twitter), referencing news that Comcast, MSNBC's parent company, plans to spin off several cable channels into a separate entity. “Hey @elonmusk I have the funniest idea ever!!!” he wrote. Musk responded, “How much does it cost?” A nod to a similar comment he made before acquiring X.
Musk followed up with, “The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely.”
The discussion soon caught the attention of podcast host Joe Rogan, who joked about wanting to take Rachel Maddow’s job if Musk bought MSNBC. “I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies,” Rogan wrote. Musk replied, “Deal.” Musk added, “Maybe I should show up there with a sink,” referencing the viral moment when he carried a sink into Twitter's headquarters after buying the platform.

Although the comments appear to be fun, they are a reference to Musk’s earlier behaviour before purchasing X in 2022. Years prior, when a user suggested he buy Twitter, Musk asked in 2017, “How much is it?” Eventually, he paid $44 billion to acquire the platform.
Meanwhile, Comcast has announced plans to separate several of its cable networks, including MSNBC, CNBC, and E!, into a new publicly traded company. This decision is part of a strategic focus on NBC and Bravo, according to Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts. "When you look at our assets, talented management team, and balance sheet strength, we are able to set these businesses up for future growth," Roberts said.
MSNBC is facing declining ratings, particularly after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election. A New York Times report noted a further dip after Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to initiate discussions, a move that reportedly alienated some of the network’s audience.
