pH level

Story highlights

Sorensen developed the pH scale in the year 1909 with an aim to device a method that could easily measure the ions

Google's interactive doodle today is dedicated to Danish biochemist Soren Peder Lauritz Sorensen who is credited with the discovery of the pH scale which determines if an item is acidic, alkaline or neutral in nature.

The pH (potential of hydrogen) scale ranks an item on the scale of 0 to 14 wherein items with lesser pH value are acidic in nature and those with a higher ranking are alkaline. Items with pH value 7 are considered neutral, one such example would include water.

Søren Peder Lauritz Sørensen was born on 9th January 1868 in Havrebjerb, Denmark. He was named among '100 Distinguished European Chemists'by the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Science.

Sørensen last breathed on 12th February 1939 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Google's interactive doodle is also informative as it lets a user play around with it while trying to guess the pH level of a number of items like tomatoes, eggs, broccoli among others.
