A Jewish student at the prestigious Yale University was stabbed in the eye with a Palestinian flag during an anti-Israel protest on campus Saturday (Apr 20), American media reported on Sunday. The student, identified as Sahar Tartak, is the editor-in-chief of the Yale Free Press, a report by Fox News said. Tartak had been covering the protest along with a friend.

The protest at the Beinecke Plaza had drawn hundreds of students in support of Palestinians, Fox News reported. Tartak said a crowd of protesters instantly singled her and her friend out as they were identifiably Jewish.

"They made a human blockade in front of us and blockaded us whenever we tried to exercise our freedom of movement around the protest," she said. At some point, Tarktak and her friend were separated.

Hurt in left eye

Tartak said that one of the students at the protest, whose face was covered with a keffiyeh, took a Palestinian flag that he was holding, waved it in her face, and hit her left eye. She tried to run after the protesters, but couldn't as the protesters prevented her from doing so.

The Jewish student also said that some people were laughing at her and none made an effort to track the assailant down. Tartak reported the incident to the police, who called an ambulance for her.

Speaking to Fox News, she also highlighted no administrators were at the protest, nor were campus police given instructions to disband it when things turned violent.

The Yale University Police Department, meanwhile, told the network that it was probing a report of assault at the Beinecke Plaza.
