In the shocking rape trial going on in France, in which the husband has been accused of drugging his wife and inviting at least 50 strangers to rape her, the man has claimed that the crimes were committed by him because his wife did not agree to the idea of "swinging".

While speaking to a criminal psychologist, the man blamed his wife for his actions and said that it was her refusal to go swinging which led to the crimes.

The 71-year-old disgraced Frenchman, Dominique Pelicot, was excused from sitting through the entire hearing on September 9 (Monday) after his lawyers said that he had been facing 'medical problems' from the last 48 hours for which no 'adequate treatment' was given to him.

However, psychologist Annabelle Montagne spoke in the court in Avignon and said thatshe had spoken to the retired electrician in December 2020, nearly a month and a half after he was taken into police custody.

In police custody, the man had admitted to committing crimes against his wife Gisele.

"Pelicot said: ''My wife and I had a discussion about swinging but she didn't agree so I drugged her''," informed the psychologist.

Madame Montagne further added that the man accepted that he loved his wife but added, "He sees his partner as an object to satisfy his sexual and narcissistic needs. His wife is then a partial object and no longer an object of total love."

Psychologist speaks about Pelicot's split personality and troubled childhood

Another prison psychologist informed the court that Pelicot had a "split personality" and had no empathy.

She said Pelicot has accepted that he would have continued to abuse his wife if he was not arrested and that the criminal charges brought against him have ruined his life.

Psychologist Marianne Douteau said that the man believes he and his wife would have been in a happy marriage if his misdeeds were not found.

(Pelicot) complains that this criminal case against him has destroyed his life. He claims everything could have continued as before if he had not been arrested. He said: 'Gisele would not have known anything, we would have continued to be happy'," the psychologist said.

"Dominique Pelicot comes from a troubled family in which young children were abused. [Pelicot] has a two-sided personality; he is a patriarch but he is also irresponsible and manipulative. Behind closed doors he does not respect limits," she added.

"He has a split personality between the person he wants to be and the person he is. He does not show any empathy - but he is not inauthentic [in his expressions of love for his wife]," the psychologist concluded.
