
The number of foreign students receivingstudy permits toCanada this year has risen despite the Canadian government's stated goal of reducing the number of temporary residents entering the nation.
This comes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has seen a decline in popularity due to the shelteraffordability crisis in the country.Therefore, steps were taken to limit the number of temporary residents, such as international students.
But when compared to the same period in 2023, those numbers have actually increased, according to data fromImmigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
In 2024, 187,510 study permits were issued in the first four months of this year, up from 165,805 the lastyear. Over the same period, the number of Indian students receiving these visas increased as wellfrom 72,750 to 81,260.
Indian students received 278,335 study permits out of the 682,4305 study permits that Canada gave in 2023. Indians have obtained 91,510 of the 216,620 study permits that Canada has awarded sofar this year.
IRCC said that 2024's intake of applications for study permits for overseas students would be capped at 35 per cent compared to 2023.

“For 2024, the cap is expected to result in approximately 360,000 approved study permits, a decrease of 35% from 2023,” IRCC noted in a press release, in January.
Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marc Miller said in March that the administration intended to "decrease in our population of temporary residents to 5 per cent over the next three years."
The rising housing costs including home prices and rentals are said to bebehind this initiative.
In May, the number of students receiving study permitssomewhat fell from 34,400 in 2023 to 30,490. During this time, the number of Indian students acquiring study permits also decreased from 13,055 to 10,560.
