Former US President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of offering Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk a prominent position in his administration if he secures a second term in the White House. In an interview with Reuters on Monday (Aug 19), Trump said he was interested in bringing Musk into his team, either in a Cabinet role or as an advisor.

"I would tap Musk for such a position if he would do it," Trump told Reuters after a campaign event in York, Pennsylvania.

Elon Musk responded to Trump's offer on his social media platform X.

"I am willing to serve," posted Musk.

However, Trump's support for Musk could also be influenced by his stance on electric vehicle incentives which could impact Tesla’s business. The former president suggested he might eliminate the $7,500 tax credit available for certain new electric vehicles.

"Tax credits and tax incentives are not generally a very good thing."

This proposal comes even though Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, benefits from such incentives.

The offer of a role to Musk is particularly notable given Musk’s shifting political allegiances.

Musk had initially supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. However, Musk publicly endorsed Trump after surviving an assassination attempt.

Trump's remarks follow a recent interview Musk conducted with Trump on X, where Trump praised Musk’s electric vehicles. While he said that not everyone should own an electric car, Trump commended Musk for producing "great products."

Earlier this year, Musk denied having any discussions with Trump about a potential advisory role.

"There have not been any discussions of a role for me in a potential Trump Presidency," he said.

However, during their live chat last week, Trump indicated he would be open to involving Musk in a "government efficiency commission", a suggestion Musk had floated to ensure that "taxpayers' money is spent in a good way."
