Climate crisis: 13 months of record-breaking heat stops in July as El Nino phenomenon slows down

El Nino phenomenon led to 13 straight months of record heat

There were 13 months of straight heat records this year, but mercifully the streak has halted in July as the El Nino phenomenon began to weaken.

Average temperature in July was 16.91 degrees, according to Copernicus, the European climate agency. That was 1.2 degrees above the 30-year average, but slightly lower than July 2023.

This July still was the second warmest as per Copernicus records. July also saw two of the hottest days on record for the month, averaging at 17.16 degrees Celcius.

Scientists warned that the threat of climate crisis is not over. "The overall context hasn't changed. Our climate continues to warm," Copernicus deputy director Samantha Burgess said.

The severe weather in the recent past included flooding in South Africa, landslides in Indonesia and India, as well as Cyclone Beryl which hit Asia.

A record heatwave in Japan caused at least 130 deaths.

The El Nino is a weather phenomenon that causes the warming of Pacific Ocean and affects climate across the planet.
