China man cycles over 4,000km so his wife would take him back. 'I did not...'

A man in China so badly wanted to reconcile with his wife after two years of separation, that he cycled nearly 4,400km to southwestern China over 100 days to meet her.

Zhou, currently in his 40s, met his wife, Li, in Shanghai and the two got married in 2007. The marriage did not last long and they divorced in 2013. But things improved between them afterwards and so they got married again. They have a son and a daughter.

But things soured once again and they separated again. Zhou told the Yangtse Evening Post that the issues between them weren't as big, but they both were just stubborn. However, they stayed in touch after breaking up.

“There wasn’t a serious issue between us; we’re just both very stubborn and acted impulsively, leading to several break-ups and reconciliations,” Zhou said.

Li told the publication that she had suggested Zhou cycle all the way to Lhasa if he wished to reconcile, but she didn't think he would actually do it.

“He reached out wanting to get back together, and I jokingly said I was driving to Lhasa. If he could ride a bike there, I might consider reconciling.”

“Honestly, I was just saying it casually; I did not expect him to actually do it,” Li told the Yangtse Evening Post.

But Zhou took it seriously and started his journey on a bicycle from the southeastern city of Nanjing on July 28. He reached his destination more than 100 days later on October 28 after travelling 4,400 km.

Zhou had two health scares

Zhou suffered a few medical issues during the trip. He suffered a heatstroke in eastern China’s Anhui province and had to be hospitalised. He recovered soon and continued with the journey.

However, in Yichang, central China’s Hubei province, he collapsed while cycling due to a heatstroke as the temperature was 40 degrees Celsius and he had no water.

He says his wife drove hundreds of kilometres to reach Yichang and take care of him since the situation was quite serious. Li told him to call it off, saying she could see how serious he was about getting back together. But Zhou was adamant about finishing the trip.

Later Li got sick and Zhou went to be by her side. Once she recovered, both of them took the trip to Lhasa together and officially reunited after reaching their destination.

Zhou now wants to cycle to Nepal and Europe.
