Canada: Pro-Khalistan group honours former Punjab CM Beant Singh's assassin at rally

canada - assassination float

In another assassination float, the pro-Khalistan radical groupin Canada, on Saturday, took out rallies to honour and commemorate the assassin of then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh in 1995.

As August 31 marked the 29th anniversary of former Punjab CM Beant Singh's assassination by Khalistani terrorists, the pro-Khalistani elements took the floats to the Indian Consulate in Vancouver, depicting the assassination in a bombed car, splashed with blood and with CM's photographs.

“Beanta Bombed to Death,”the float read, while also paying homage to his killer Dilawar Singh Babbar, the suicide bomber.

Beant Singh was killed on August 31, 1995. Meanwhile, his appointment as Punjab CM came at a time when Punjab was witnessing increased instability.

On Saturday, a similar rally was held in Toronto. It was led by Inderjeet Singh Gosal, who described campaigners for the so-called Khalistan Referendum as "offspring" of Dilawar Singh.

Similar parade held in June

Earlier in June also, another assassination float was taken out in Brampton in the Greater Toronto Area, featuring an effigy of Indira Gandhi as she was assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards.

The parade was allegedly organised by pro-Khalistani supporters on June 9, days before the 39th anniversary of 'Operation Bluestar'.

Operation Bluestar was an Indian armed forces operation, carried out to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other Sikh militants from the Golden Temple, Amritsar, in 1984. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards months after the military operation.

The posters at the parade, also stated, "her punishment" had been "delivered" on October 31, 1984, the date of the assassination.

India's response

After this, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa sent a note expressing displeasure to Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian foreign ministry, stating, “You cannot exceed freedom of expression like this, glorifying the assassination of the leader of a democratic nation,” an Indian official said on condition of anonymity.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also said that the incident was not good for the India-Canada relationship.
