Attack on Israeli army base: Hezbollah drones entered Israeli airspace from sea, says report

An initial investigation of the Hezbollah drone attack on an Israeli army base duringthe weekend revealed that the Iran-aligned Lebanese militant group launched two drones that entered Israeli airspace from the sea, The Times of Israel reported on Monday (Oct 14).

The drones were Mirsad. The model is Hezbollah’s main suicide drone, the report said.

Speaking to the publication, the Alma Center (an Israeli research institute)said that the Hezbollah drone had a 120-kilometre assault range and a top speed of 370 kilometres per hour.

The Alma Center said that the drone can carry up to 40 kilograms of explosives, and the ability to fly ataltitudes of up to 3,000 meters.

Drones were tracked by Israeli radars

The report further said that the drones were tracked by Israeli radars, and one of them was shot down off the coast north of Haifa. Airforce planes and helicopters pursued the second drone, but it dropped off the radar and the militarylost track of it, likely because it flew very close to the ground.

This drone ended up striking the Golani Brigade training basenearBinyamina on Sunday night. Four soldiers were killed and more than 60 others were injured in the attack.

Israeli military chief visits army base

On Monday, Israeli military chiefLieutenant General Herzi Halevi visited the Golani Brigade training baseand praised troops for how they handled the attack.

"We are at war, and an attack on a training base on the home front is difficult and the results are painful," Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi told troops.

The four soldiers who were killed were identified asSgt. Omri Tamari, 19, from Mazkeret Batya;Sgt. Yosef Hieb, 19, from Tuba Zangariya;Sgt. Yoav Agmon, 19, from Binyamina-Giv’at Ada; andSgt. Alon Amitay, 19, from Ramot Naftali.
