Heavily armed men opened fire from both sides on the military convoy, killing 12 security personnel.
At least 12 Pakistani soldiers were killed in an ambush by the Pakistan Taliban in northwest Pakistan on Saturday (Sept 13). At around 4:00 am, a military convoy was passing through Faqir Sarai in Upper South Waziristan when heavily armed men opened fire from both sides, reported AFP, citing local government official.
The responsibility of the attack has been claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) also known as Pakistan Taliban, a jihadist group that Islamabad says is based in Afghanistan
A security officer stationed in the area confirmed the toll and said the attackers fled with the weapons and drones from the soldiers.
According to Reuters, 13 militants were also killed in an "intense exchange of fire".
Eyewitnesses said, they saw helicopters take the injured to hospital after the early morning attack. A search operation is on for the attackers.

About Tehreek-e-Taliban
Islamabad alleges that the Pakistani Taliban, inspired by the Afghan Taliban, is supported by the Afghan Taliban administration, leading to rift between both the countries. Afghanistan has, however, denied the charges.
Tehreek-e-Taliban, has repeatedly carried out attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, where it once had control over large swathes of territory before it was forced to retreat by the Pakistani military in 2014.
The group has intensified its attack, since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
