At least 19 people were killed as two four-storey buildings collapsed in the Moroccan city of Fes, the state news agency said Wednesday.
At least 19 people died after two four-storey buildings collapsed in the Moroccan city of Fes, the state news agency said Wednesday. "Sixteen other people were wounded, with varying degrees of gravity," MAP reported and added that rescue operations are still in process.
Additionally, residents in the vicinity of the area and neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, deteriorating living conditions in Morocco sparked demonstrations over poverty and public services in September.
As per Al Jazeera, the two four-storey buildings were located in the Al-Mustaqbal neighbourhood, and a total of eight families were staying in the buildings at the time of the collapse.
Building collapses in Moroccan cities have been a recurring issue
A similar incident was reported in Fes before. In February last year, five people lost their lives after a house collapsed in the city's old quarter. Building collapses have been a recurring issue across the country.
In 2016, Marrakesh saw two fatal building collapses occur within a single week, claiming multiple lives and injuring more than 20 people. A government review conducted in 2023 found that over 12,000 structures in Marrakesh and surrounding areas were at risk, according to local media reports cited by Al Jazeera.

Some officials noted that many of these buildings may have become even more fragile following the powerful earthquakes that struck Morocco in the same year, Al Jazeera added. Authorities are continuing rescue operations and have launched an investigation into the cause of Wednesday’s collapse.
