The death toll from fresh clashes along the Thailand-Cambodian border has risen to six, said the nation's defence ministry on Tuesday (Dec 9). In a Facebook post, the Cambodian defence ministry said that the Thai military fired into the border province of Banteay Meanchey after midnight, “resulting in the deaths of two civilians who were travelling on National Road 56 by shelling”. With the fresh update, the civilian death toll in Cambodia has risen to six since Monday. Meanwhile, Thailand has confirmed the death of one of its soldiers and injuries to several others. Thailand launched airstrikes early Monday, saying it was responding to Cambodian forces firing BM-21 rockets towards civilian areas in Buriram province.
Tell the aggressor to stop
International leaders are calling for restraint. On Monday, the European Union called on the two nations to "exercise maximum restraint" and dial down hostilities. The remarks were echoed by the United Nations, in a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both parties "to avoid further escalation" and "recommit to the ceasefire" brokered earlier this year. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, too, has called for restraint and diplomacy. However, speaking to reporters in Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul insisted that no one should tell his country to stop.
"We're long past that point," he said. "If you want things to stop, tell the aggressor to stop."

Thousands evacuated
About 35,000 people in Thailand have been evacuated from border areas, according to the country’s Second Army Region. The surge in violence follows combat this summer, in which five days of fighting left 43 people dead and forced around 300,000 to flee before a ceasefire took hold. However, last month, a follow-up agreement backed by US President Donald Trump led to a pause in the conflict, but the truce was suspended by Thailand last month after a landmine blast wounded several of its soldiers.
