
Six Indians were among at least 18 people who were killed in a bus accident in Mexico which injured additional 23 people. The accident took place in Nayarit state in northwestern Mexico. AFP said that the bus was carrying foreign migrants and locals. The bus plummeted into a ravine. The civil protection agency in Nayarit state reported. that three minors were among the dead.
At the time of the accident, about 40 people were on board. The bus was travelling from Mexico City to northwestern Tijuana, which borders San Diego. Numerous migrants attempt to seek refuge in the US from there.
"Most of the passengers are foreigners and originating from countries such as India, the Dominican Republic and from the African continent, among others, some of whom were heading to Tijuana to cross into the United States," the civil protection agency said.
The agency said that rescuers were still attempting remove people from the bus. It said that the death toll was preliminary.
The driver of the bus has been detained on suspicion of speeding. It is suspected that the driver lost control due to speeding and plunged the bus down an embankment near the state capital Tepic, said the agency. Reuters said that the bus is stuck in a raving that is 50 metres deep.
Deadly road accidents are common inMexico, usually due to high speeds, poor vehicle conditions or driver fatigue. Such crashes are even leading cause of death among migrants making the dangerous journey overland to the United States.
In the month of February, migrants from Venezuela, Colombia and Central America were involved in abuscrash. The accident took place between southern state of Oaxaca and central Puebla. The tragedy left at least 17 dead.
In July, at least 29 people were killed when a passengerbuscareened off a mountain road and fell into a ravine in Oaxaca.
In December 2021, a trailer carrying 160 migrants crashed into a pedestrian bridge on a highway in the southern state of Chiapas, leaving 56 dead, mostly Guatemalans.
