A research group claimed on Thursday (August 21) that 14 million illegal immigrants entered the United States in 2023 - which is the highest number in all time. Although the number is still far lower than what the American President Donald Trump has estimated.

The Pew Research Center’s closely watched gauge rose from 11.8 million a year earlier and surpassed the previous high of 12.2 million in 2007, AP reported.
The report said that the massive increase was driven by 6 million immigrants who were in the country with some form of legal protection. Trump has stripped many of those protections since taking office in January.
Pew, whose estimates date back to 1990, said that its analysis has primarily mentioned 2023 - the number has increased in 2024 as well. The number dropped this year under Trump, but is still likely above 14 million, the report claimed.
Regardless of the legal status, the entire population of immigrants in the US has reached as high as 53 million in January 2025, accounting for a record 15.8% of the US population.
While the findings are unlikely to settle the debate, Pew’s report is one of the most complete attempts to measure illegal immigration.

'Paint US-Mexico wall black, so it is too hot to climb'
According to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the US-Mexico border is going to be painted black so that it gets hotter in the sun and becomes difficult to scale the wall for people looking to cross the border. The plan is being carried out on "specific request" of President Trump, said Noem during a press conference held at the border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, on Tuesday (Aug 19).
While speaking to reporters, Noem explained, "That is specifically at the request of the president, who understands that in the hot temperatures down here when something is painted black it gets even warmer and it will make it even harder for people to climb. So we are going to be painting the entire southern border wall black to make sure that we encourage individuals to not come into our country illegally."
