The US Justice Department extradited two Nigerian men Samuel Ogoshi and Samson Ogoshi who forced Jordan to send explicit pictures by posing as young women.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They threatened to distribute these images to Jordan’s family, friends and relatives. If both men are found guilty, they will be sentenced to minimum 30 years of imprisonment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The woman, named Gina Helsel, resides in the Daytona Beach area. Last Thursday (August 10), when she let her dog out onto the porch to scare off the cats, little did she know she herself was in for a big shock.</p>

<p>“My brother called me… cracking up and was like, ‘Gina, only you would scream like that',” she said while explaining how her family members reacted to the incident.</p>

<p>“I am glad the bear’s OK. I don’t want anything to happen to the bear. The bear was doing what – it lives here,” Gina added.</p>

<p>Acknowledging growing concerns over the exploitation of young 'influencers' on social media platforms, Illinois has enacted the United States's first law to safeguard minors featured in online videos. The law will also ensure that these young influencers are properly compensated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The legislation, as per a CNN report, was inspired by the advocacy of 16-year-old Shreya Nallamothu from Normal, Illinois.</p>

<h2><strong>How it all started</strong></h2>

<p>The teenager's concern reportedly began when scrolling through social media during the pandemic. She noticed an increasing number of children featured in family vlogs. These videos made her "realise family vlogging is putting very private and intimate moments on&nbsp;the internet."</p>

<p>This prompted her to write a letter to Democrat Dave Koehler, her state senator, urging him to consider protective legislation for these children.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The law</strong></h2>

<p>Influenced by her letter, last week, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker signed into law an amendment to the state's Child Labor Law.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among other things, the new law allows teenagers over the age of 18 to sue their parents if they were featured in monetised social media videos and not adequately compensated. These rights mirror the rights held by child actors.</p>

<p>The new law draws inspiration from the 1936 "Jackie Coogan's Law," which was designed to prevent parents from exploiting child actors' earnings.</p>

<p>Starting July 1, 2024, parents in Illinois will be obligated to allocate 50 per cent of earnings from a video's content into a blocked trust fund for the child 'influencer'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The exact amount, however, will depend on the duration for which the child is featured in the video. For instance, if a child appears in 50 per cent of a video, they'll be liable to receive 25 per cent of the earnings. Similarly, for a video they're in 100 per cent, they will get 50 per cent of the earnings.</p>

<p>Talking to CNN, Senator Koehler said that they "understand that parents should receive compensation too because they have equity in this, but we don't want to forget about the child."</p>

<h2><strong>Why is such a law necessary?</strong></h2>

<p>Recently, there has been a rising trend of YouTube parent vloggers and social media influencers posting frequent videos sharing personal details about their lives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Children often play a significant role in these monetised videos, yet there is no legal requirement for parents to share the video earnings with the children.</p>

<p>Similarly, kid influencer&nbsp;accounts that often earn as much as $20,000 for sponsored posts rarely benefit the children. These accounts are managed by parents due to age restrictions on social media platforms.</p>

<p>"We know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetise kids being on videos. If money is being made and nothing is set up for the children, it's the same thing as a child actor," said Koehler.</p>

<p>Experts say that this legislation "is a long time coming." Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor studying social media influencer communities, expressed hope that other US states will follow Illinois' example.</p>

<p>She said, "Social media labour and careers are becoming increasingly common and viable forms of income, and it’s important that the law catches up with technology to ensure minors aren’t being exploited."</p>

<p dir="ltr">Not only it took less time to complete the construction, but the technology also gave more flexibility to the shape of the building.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">Spread over 1021 square feet, the structure was built by Larsen &amp; Tourbo Limited under the technological guidance of India’s prestigious engineering institute—the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras.</p>

<p dir="ltr">This is said to be the first commercial building to have used 3D printing technology.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">Communications and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who virtually inaugurated the building, said that the new post office reflects the spirit of present-day India.</p>

<p dir="ltr">He marvelled at the structure, saying that it was possible because the country has a leadership that is decisive and has confidence in its people’s capabilities.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">“This city always presents a new picture of India. The new picture that you saw in terms of this 3D-print post office building is the spirit of India today. That's the spirit with which India is progressing today…”</p>

<p dir="ltr">“The spirit of development, the spirit of developing our own technology that's the defining feature. All this is possible because the country has a leadership that is decisive &amp; has confidence in our people’s capabilities,” Vaishnaw said.</p>

<p>Although it was not yet clear why these buildings survived the wildfires, some reports indicate the way they were constructed might have played a key role.</p>

<h2><strong>Why some buildings survived the wildfires?</strong></h2>

<p>Some residents attributed the miracle to the thick concrete walls, which don’t burn.</p>

<p>Tamura, 67, was quoted by San Francisco Chronicle as saying that her grandfather made the house with cement because “of the bugs and dry rot in Hawaii.”</p>

<p>The fire's devastating toll has tragically reached 110 casualties, leaving over 1,000 residents unaccounted for. To date, authorities in Maui have been able to confirm the identities of&nbsp;five victims.</p>

This means that the handle, previously owned by none-other-than Jack Dorsey himself might be up for grabs, if someone hasn't claimed it already that is. Such handles sell for thousands of dollars in the secondary market on the internet.</p>

<p>Dorsey made the announcement about quitting Instagram in a post on decentralised social media Nostr. Dorsey said that he was deleting the account after years of non-use.</p>

<p>“Don’t know why it took me so long,” he wrote. “I think I was in the first 10 accounts on the platform, and one of the first angel investors. [Instagram co-founder] Kevin [Systrom] was our intern at Odeo,” noted Dorsey in his post. (Odeo was the organisation founded in 2005 by Noah Glass and Evan Williams, that later reformed as the Obvious Corporation which ended up becoming the birthplace of Twitter.)</p>

<p>He also said that he stopped using the app after it was acquired by Facebook (now Meta).</p>

<p>Dorsey and Systrom had been friends since they were working together at Odeo. At one point, Twitter even tried acquiring Instagram. But the attempt was rejected. Dorsey found out later that Instagram was being sold to Facebook for USD 1 billion. He then stopped using Instagram reportedly because he was hurt that Systrom didn't tell him directly.</p>

<p>Dorsey hasn't posted anything on Instagram since April 9, 2012. It has been reported in media that it was on that day that Dorsey found out that Instagram was acquired by Facebook.</p>

<p>Dorsey quitting Instagram has come at a time when the photo-sharing app is competing with Twitter through its own app Threads.</p>

<p>A nerve-wracking video captured by a passenger showed the moment flames shot out of an engine of a Southwest Airlines jet.</p>

<p>The video was captured&nbsp;aboard a Texas-Mexico flight. In the clip shared on social media, flames start bursting out of the jet in the sky near Houston, forcing the plane to make&nbsp;a hasty but safe landing.</p>

<p>Flight 307 was climbing out of William P. Hobby Airport in Houston en route to Cancun on Tuesday evening (Aug 16) when the right engine erupted in flames, KHOU reported.</p>

<p>The jet experienced a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff, the Dallas-based carrier said in an official statement.</p>

<p>The footage was captured by passenger Ricardo Garcia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A mechanical engineer named Andrew Sandino, 38 witnessed this moment from the ground. He was leaving for work near Hobby when he looked up and saw flames coming out of the aircraft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I noticed big black plumes of smoke coming out the right engine and then it started shooting really big fireballs out and the plane was shifting back and forth, side to side, pretty heavily," Sandino told NBC News on Thursday.</p>

<p>Flight 307 was only in the air for 16 minutes before passengers were back on the ground and moved to a new plane.</p>

<p>Southwest is one of the few major US-based carriers to have never had a fatal crash.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Back in 2018, a New Mexico woman was killed when an engine exploded on a Southwest flight after taking off from New York. The blast sent shrapnel through one of the jet’s windows and the victim was partially sucked out of the plane.</p>

<p>Authorities reported that a big storm swept over southwest Germany late Wednesday, unleashing massive floods and over 25,000 bolts of lightning within an hour.</p>

<h2><strong>Fire service launched over 500 operations</strong></h2>

<p>Following the mayhem caused due to heavy rains, the fire service in Germany’s financial capital said they launched over 500 operations related to the storm.</p>

<p>Officials said they were called to help as more than 350 instances of flooding into buildings and fallen trees were reported. Even off-duty personnel had to be called in, AFP reported.</p>

<p>The storm also affected other areas, with Gelsenkirchen, in the region North Rhine-Westphalia, hard hit.</p>

<h2><strong>Weather forecast</strong></h2>

<p>As per a report from The Local, a German publication, the weather service earlier predicted thunderstorms throughout the nation except for the northwest region. The forecast indicated that these thunderstorms were expected to bring intense rainfall, ranging from 25 to 40 litres per square metre in a short span of time, along with a potential for flooding in certain areas.</p>

<p>A device can overheat fast if charging under a blanket or pillow. Apple's message said, "Don't sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body when it's connected to a power source."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an unfortunate incident, a pilot collapsed and died inside a toilet aboard a Boeing 787 flight bound for Chile from Miami, forcing the co-pilots to make an emergency landing in Panama, earlier this week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The deceased pilot, identified as 56-year-old Ivan Andaur was chauffeuring the Santiago-bound LATAM Airlines flight around 11 pm on Sunday (August 13), a Chilean multinational airline, when he suffered a suspected cardiac arrest, according to a report in <em>New York Post.</em>&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>After receiving news that their colleagues was unwell, the two co-pilots took over the cockpit and emergency landed at the&nbsp;Tocumen International Airport in Panama City.</p>

<p>One of the co-pilots asked the passengers on the PA system if there were any doctors on the plane.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“They told us that we were going to land because the pilot felt sick and when we arrived, they asked us to evacuate the plane because the situation had worsened," said an unnamed passenger.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Unfortunately, we did not have the necessary or sufficient supplies to perform a good resuscitation,” the nurse was quoted as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“LATAM needs to improve the issue of protocol in case of health and medical emergencies like this where lives can be saved but the resources are needed," she added.</p>

<p>After the emergency landing, the passengers were shifted to hotels in Panama City&nbsp;and the flight resumed on Tuesday.&nbsp;</p>

The outfit, which is made of latex, vulcanized rubber and synthetic materials, became a talking point on social media after it was put up for auction, on an Alberta government surplus auction site, in the month of July.</p>

<p>On Monday night, the auction was closed by an Edmonton-based Donair&nbsp;&amp; Poutine chain when a bid of $11,900 was offered.</p>

<p>More than 1,700 bids were registered for the costume, as per the provincial government website when PrimeTime Donair and Poutine eventually wrapped up the month-long online bidding war.</p>

<p>Wrapped in tinfoil, the 4ft 8in (142cm) costume comes with replica meat, tomatoes, onions, sauce and lettuce to give it an authentic feel along with a silver bodysuit to be worn underneath.</p>

<p>Owner of PrimeTime Donair, Adil Asim said that he was amused by the suit and thought that it was funny.</p>

<p>"We were amused by it. We thought it was funny!" CTV News Edmonton quoted him as saying.</p>

<p>As per the Alberta legislature newsletter Alberta Today, the suit was originally designed for the 2015 PSA campaign against distracted driving.</p>

<p>The concept behind the campaign was to walk a donair, which would be a visual representation showcasing the hallucinatory dangers of driving while high, which the department had titled 'Don’t Drive and Donair'.</p>

<p>The campaign was originally pitched under the PC government but was later scrapped by the newly elected NDP government in 2015.</p>

<p>Asim, in a conversation with CTV, said that he wasn't yet sure as to what could be possibly done with the costume and how it could be fully utilised.</p>

<p>"I might squeeze my 16-year-old son into it, just to kind of get up, get it going around, but we definitely were thinking of collaborating with some comedians possibly and doing some TikTok content," he said.</p>

<p>Spokesperson Tamisan Bencz-Knight said that the new owner of the Donair costume was also having thoughts about using the suit for charitable causes.</p>

<p>"Whatever that looks like, whether it's providing meals, participating in an event or even just having our mascot out with your mascot giving hugs and high fives, there are always opportunities, so we’ll see what happens," she said.</p>

<p>According to a report by The New York Times on Tuesday (August 15), a phalanx of lounge chairs with red umbrellas is covering the sand on the Monastiri beach in Paros.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A pair of front-row seats near the crystalline waters costs At $76 (70 euros) and&nbsp;less than half were taken on a recent day, the report said. Speaking to NYT, a local resident said that in some cases, the chairs covered 100 per cent of the beach.</p>

<p>"We feel we’re being pushed off the island," the resident said and pointed out that people were being made to feel unwelcome unless they use the services of the beach bars that own the chairs.</p>

<h2><strong>Many businesses on beaches expanding illegally</strong></h2>

<p>While beaches are public in Greece, local authorities lease sections of them to bars, restaurants and hotels. The report said that though no more than 50 per cent of beaches are supposed to be occupied, many businesses are expanding illegally.</p>

<p>The NYT report said that in Paros, the businesses have become predatory with up to $130 being charged for VIP sun loungers. Apart from local residents, tourists are also not happy about the proliferation of the chairs.</p>

<p>Local residents have said that seaside businesses have left them hardly a scrap of sand on which to lay their towels.</p>

<h2><strong>'Towel Movement' spreading quickly</strong></h2>

<p>The "Towel Movement" demonstrations are spreading quickly- from Paros to the nearby island of Naxos, and to other holiday spots in the north and the south of Greece. A report by the news agency Reuters on August 10 said that an investigation has been launched into the Paros case.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, in Naxos, more than 5,000 people have joined the Facebook group "Save Naxos Beaches" which has filed a legal complaint.</p>

<p>Eleni Andrianopoulou, the group's spokesperson, said the beaches were so full of this furniture since the beginning of the tourist season that many people didn't want to sit on a bed or in a chair they didn't have any space anymore to sit."</p>

<p>“People started complaining, sending letters, sending complaints, filing complaints and gathering signatures but nothing happened they were not heard. The situation continued and got worse and worse and so they felt also angry and many of these angry people were going every day to the beach ready for (a) fight," Andrianopoulou added.</p>

<p>A video of a woman who stepped into Rome's iconic tourist attraction, Trevi Fountain, to fill her water bottle has been doing rounds on social media and has taken the internet by storm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Donning a blue shirt, and white pants, and sporting a baseball cap, the woman stunned the onlookers as she walked over a row of rocks with an empty plastic bottle and filled it up under one of the fountain's waterfalls.</p>

<p>A person told WLR that he withdrew over $1,100 from his bank, even though he had less money.</p>

<p>This error was witnessed in its online app that allowed customers to transfer up to $1,000 from their Bank of Ireland accounts into a Revolut account even if they had zero balance WLR reported. They could then withdraw the cash from an ATM.</p>

<p>However, the bank had warned customers that they would recover the money for those who made withdrawals and transfers in excess of their balances.</p>

<p>"Even tomatoes need a vacation...we are unable to add tomatoes to our food," read notices pasted at two Burger King India outlets.</p>

<p>After a user pointed out the absence of tomatoes in the burgers on the&nbsp;support page of Burger King India's website, the company, which has over 400 outlets in the country, requested patience from the consumers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Why are there no tomatoes in my burgers?" asked the user to which Burger King said,&nbsp;"tomatoes will be back soon".</p>

<h2><strong>Government sells tomatoes&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Ahead of the extended Independence Day holiday weekend, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) sold 71,500 kilogrammes of tomatoes at subsidised rate over a two-day mega sale event in Delhi to bring relief to the consumers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Out of 71,500 kg of tomatoes, 36,500 kg were sold on August 12 while the remaining 35,000 kg was sold on August 13. On both days, the vegetable was sold at a subsidised rate of Rs 70 per kg,&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since July 11, NCCF, acting on behalf of the Consumer Affairs Ministry, has been selling tomatoes at discounted rates to ease inflation.</p>

After a user pointed out the absence of tomatoes in the burgers on the support page of Burger King India's website, the company, which has over 400 outlets in the country, requested patience from the consumers. "Why are there no tomatoes in my burgers?" asked the user to which Burger King said, "tomatoes will be back soon". "We request your patience and understanding," it says. Last month, Mcdonald's India issued an official statement saying it was dropping tomatoes from its menu due to a 'temporary issue'. The spokesperson of McDonald’s India- North and East said that the fast food chain is “constrained to serve tomatoes” in its menu items due to “seasonal issues” in procurement. Multiple reasons have contributed to the price rise but it is the incessant rains that have had the most significant impact on tomato inflation. The prices, in recent weeks, had surged from Rs 70-80 per kg to Rs 150-200 per kg due to limited supply caused by crop damage from heavy rainfall and extreme heat. Experts also pointed out that fewer tomatoes were planted this year as the farmers went for cash crops. When will the prices return to normal? According to experts, the price of tomatoes always peaks during this time of the year due to weather disturbances in many cities. Past trends also indicate that after a brief upheaval in prices during mid-Monsoon season, the market course corrects and the tomato prices come down when the yield is supported by the weather.
