OpenAI on Thursday (Oct 31)added a new search functionto its popularlanguage model ChatGPT, opting to integrate the feature into the chatbot instead of launching a separate product.
This new search function, called ChatGPT Search,could put OpenAI in direct competition with Google's search engine. The artificial intelligence (AI) giant said it was releasing the feature topaid users of ChatGPT but will eventually expand it to all ChatGPT users.
The search model is a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, OpenAIsaid, adding that all ChatGPT Plus and Team users would have had access to it on Thursday.
"ChatGPT search leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners, to provide the information users are looking for,"OpenAIsaid in a blog post.
The AI giant also pointed out it collaborated extensively with the news industry and gathered feedback from its partners on the search function. Any website or publisher can choose to appear in the ChatGPT search.
The launch of this new search function comes months afterOpenAIselectively launched SearchGPT in July-an AI-powered search engine prototype with real-time access to information from the internet.
In a post on X, OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Altman said, "Search is my favourite feature we have launched in ChatGPT since the original launch! It has probably doubled my usage over the past few weeks."

"Search will be available at chatgpt.com(opens in a new window), as well as on our desktop and mobile apps. All ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as SearchGPT waitlist users, will have access today. Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the next few weeks. We’ll roll out to all Free users over the coming months," OpenAI said in the blog post.
