No Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup plans: Report

Talismanic Indian batter Virat Kohli is approaching the end of his cricket career, having already confirmed his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup to be his last. Although still peaking in the only format he plays in, Kohli’s ODI successor must be finalised before he hangs up his boots. Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has named a surprise left-hander as Kohli’s replacement at number three in the One-Dayers; it’s neither Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, nor even Devdutt Padikkal, who emerged as a Test star recently. For what Kohli has achieved batting at that position in the 50-over format, he has cemented his place amongst the greatest ODI batters of all time, let alone from India. His numbers put him only second to the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, while Kohli has surpassed him in the number of ODI hundreds. Considering there is plenty of ODI cricket scheduled before the showpiece event gets underway on October 2, 2027, in Africa, Kohli could inch closer to breaking Sachin’s run tally. Jaffer has brought up T20I mainstay Tilak Varma’s name as Kohli’s potential replacement at number three. Having tasted immense success in the shortest format with one T20 World Cup title to his name, Tilak has shown quality even batting up the order. Also read| ‘Dhoni told me you always…’: Shai Hope credits MS Dhoni for Chandigarh run chase masterclass Pressing his case ahead of the regulars in the ODIs, Jaffer, on his YouTube Channel, said, “It feels great to see his versatility. He previously scored a century at No. 3, and now he has adapted to the No. 5 and No. 6 positions so beautifully. This is an amazing quality.” Explaining his decision behind not picking Jaiswal as Kohli’s potential replacement, Jaffer said, “It’s about time. When Virat and Rohit leave, Rohit, obviously, is a top-order batter, and Yashasvi Jaiswal is there to replace him, but I feel there will be a left-handed batter in Virat’s place. He has that game; we saw the way he scored runs in the Duleep Trophy. His first-class average is around 55. So, he can fit into all three formats pretty easily.” Meanwhile, Tilak has limited experience leading up to the 50-over World Cup, having played five ODIs. He has batted twice at number three, and once each at number four and five, scoring 68 runs at an average of 22.67. Tilak’s last ODI appearance came against South Africa in December 2025.

Wasim Jaffer picked Tilak Varma over Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan as the ideal left-handed successor for Virat Kohli at No. 3 in India's ODI lineup.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has to wait for his turn in the ODI team, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak suggested on the eve of the series opener against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday (Sep 27). With One-Day captain Shubman Gill ‘good to go’ after being hit on the elbow several times during the nets on Saturday (Sep 26), Jaiswal’s chances of making a return to 50-over cricket are down to zero. Jaiswal, however, defended his actions on social media and claimed that Fernando had crossed the line. Responding to a Cricbuzz video featuring commentator Harsha Bhogle discussing the incident, Jaiswal wrote on Instagram, “If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgement if anyone cross the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply.” The Cricbuzz video was posted on Sunday after Day 1, while Jaiswal’s comment came early on Monday before the start of Day 2.

IND vs SL: ICC penalises Jaiswal, Asitha Fernando after Colombo Test altercation

Tempers flared in Colombo after Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal charged at Sri Lankan quick Asitha Fernando following his dismissal on day one of the ongoing second Test match. Just after Fernando’s inswinging delivery crashed into the wickets, dismissing well-set Jaiswal on 45, an animated celebration followed, but what happened right after made headlines for all the wrong reasons. As Jaiswal stood in disbelief after a faint inside edge led to his wicket – India’s second for the day – he returned to confront Asitha, who was busy celebrating with his teammates. Although nothing is on record, Jaiswal seemed to be triggered by some murmuring from the fast bowler. After which, he charged towards Asitha and touched his helmet on his face, only for the Sri Lankan players to separate the two. WATCH VIDEO BELOW –

Earlier, Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal plays as a batter in the Test team, and although he rolls his arms a bit, he still doesn’t bowl often; however, he was crucial in Sri Lankan keeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella’s dismissal on day five of the concluded Test in Galle. On Wednesday (Aug 19), on-field chatter between the two around grabbing an IPL deal led to Dickwella’s dismissal, and credit must be given to Jaiswal. The instance took place in the 60th over of Sri Lanka’s second innings, and although the banter itself was good-natured, the two were in each other’s faces throughout it. The Indian opener, who was trying to get under Dickwella’s skin and wanting him to push for a hook shot despite knowing it wasn’t his strongest shot, began the banter, saying, "There wasn't a lot of shots in the first innings. I need to see something,” to which Dickwella responded with ‘okay’. Jaiswal then pointed towards the deep square leg area and said to him, "Hit him there, I need to see something." Also read| IND vs SL, 1st Test: Manav Suthar's 10-for in only second match helps India win by 165 runs "No, I'm not Jaiswal," Dickwella, who returned to the Test side for the first time in three years, replied. Ironically, Sangakkara and Dickwella also have another thing in common besides nationality and wicketkeeping duties: both are products of the same school - Trinity College, Kandy. The moment came on the next ball -- when instead of hooking a short-pitched delivery off Prasidh Krishna -- Dickwella gave himself room to hit it over third man, and top-edged it to the keeper. The Indian camp erupted in joy as the last-recognised batting partnership was broken, and more so for Jaiswal triggering Dickwella’s wicket, with several Indian players celebrating with Jaiswal.
