Mysterious earthquakes near the US military’s base close to Area 51 have sparked speculations about whether the United States is conducting nuclear tests amid war with Iran. The Tonopah Test Range in Nevada, which is also referred to as Area 51, is known for stockpiling nuclear weapons. The region has seen over 100 seismic events in the last week amid military escalation in the Middle East, according to reports. In recent days, the range has experienced several tremors, from small to slightly significant ones according to the US Geological Survey. The mysterious earthquakes began on Sunday (Mar 1) at Area 52, which is about three hours northeast of Las Vegas and close to Area 51. For decades, the remote region has been believed to be a site where the US military carries out experimental aircraft testing and nuclear weapons research. On Sunday, the USGS detected 16 moderate tremors, all stronger than 2.5 magnitude, near the Tonopah Test Range. Over the last week, scientists have detected tremors ranging from a minor 1.0 and 1.9 magnitude earthquakes to stronger than 3.0, which could be felt by anyone on the ground nearby. The strongest of these quakes was recorded on Sunday at 11.37 am ET, when a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck the remote region of the Nevada desert, roughly 48 miles northeast of Tonopah. The tremors were reportedly felt by residents as far away as Carson City, over 180 miles to the west, and Las Vegas, 175 miles south. No official confirmation or cause of the earthquakes have been provided by the US authorities. This comes after the US and Israeli military launched strikes on Iran on Saturday (Feb 28), killing Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and several other top Iranian officials. The operation was named ‘Epic Fury’ by the US and ‘Lion’s Roar’ by Israel. The attacks came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and ongoing talks over Iran’s nuclear program. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on Israel and US military bases in the region, including in Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.Khamenei’s death was confirmed on March 1, with Iran vowing strong revenge over the killing of its supreme leader and warning that US bases in the region would be treated as American territory. Gulf states have cautioned against further escalation, even as Washington and Tel Aviv signal that operations could continue for weeks. As the conflict escalates, Iran-aligned groups have joined the fight. The War Powers Resolution (WPR), enacted in 1973 after Congress overrode President Richard Nixon’s veto, was designed to reinforce Congress’s constitutional authority over decisions to send US forces into armed conflict. Under the statute, the president is expected to consult with Congress 'in every possible instance' before introducing US troops into hostilities. What does the War Powers Resolution mean as the US Senate rejects an Iran-focused measure, outlining Congress’s authority and fast-track procedures today

Senate Republicans on Wednesday (March 4) voted down a resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s military authority in Iran, signaling continued GOP support for the administration’s escalating operations in the Middle East and underscoring Democrats’ limited ability to restrain the White House. The measure failed 47-53, largely along party lines. Senator Rand Paul was the only Republican to side with nearly every Democrat in backing the proposal. Senator John Fetterman was the lone Democrat to oppose it. The resolution sought to require the withdrawal of US forces from Iran absent explicit congressional authorization, citing Article I of the Constitution, which grants Congress the sole authority to declare war. Supporters argued the measure was necessary to reaffirm legislative oversight of military engagements. Speaking on the Senate floor, Paul criticised what he described as congressional inaction, invoking James Madison and warning that lawmakers were failing to defend their constitutional responsibilities. He said Congress had become overly deferential to presidential power in matters of war. Also Read: US says Spain will 'cooperate'; Madrid denies White House claim of military cooperation on Iran The vote’s outcome was widely anticipated. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (March 4) said that the United States and Israel are in a strong position in their war with Iran, pledging that they will “continue forward” against the Islamic Republic. White House says US strikes on Iran aim to destroy missile capabilities, weaken naval forces, dismantle proxies, and stop nuclear weapons development

The White House declined on Wednesday (March 4) to definitively rule out US involvement in a reported strike on a girls’ elementary school in southern Iran, while maintaining that the United States does not deliberately target civilians. Amid the escalated military tensions between Israel and Iran, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has alleged that the Iranian regime has been targeting civilians "on purpose". The post added that the weapons are not designed for precision. "The Iranian regime is using them to kill as many civilians as possible," it added.

What are cluster warhead missiles?
A cluster warhead missile is a type of munition that splits in mid-air and releases multiple smaller explosive submunitions over a wide area. That’s why it's often described as exploding high above the ground and “scattering explosives.”
How does this missile work?
The missile bursts and the warhead opens in mid-air at a predetermined altitude. Instead of a big explosion, the warhead releases many smaller bombs (called submunitions or bomblets). The bomblets fall over a large radius (reports cite around 8 km from the burst point). Each submunition has its own explosive charge and impact fuse, designed to detonate when it hits the ground.
Why is the warhead controversial?
Wide area: Cluster warheads do not aim at a single point target. By design, they disperse submunitions over a large area, which makes them unsuitable for precision strikes. That’s why they’re often described as “not designed for precision.” High risk to civilians: Because the bomblets land across a wide zone, if that zone includes populated areas (cities, towns, villages), there is a high probability that civilians will be hit. That’s why human rights groups and some governments have condemned their use in or near cities — the pattern of explosion is unpredictable relative to population distribution. Unexploded ordnance: A major danger with cluster munitions is that many submunitions fail to detonate on impact and remain live. These “duds” can pose lethal hazards long after the conflict ends, similar to landmines. Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. The United States has confirmed it deployed a newly developed ground-launched missile in combat for the first time amid ongoing US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Footage released by US forces in the region appeared to show the weapon in action. "In a historic first, the US Army fired long-range Precision Strike missiles, called PrSMs, in combat," Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM) in the Middle East, said in a video statement issued late Tuesday (March 3). Joint US and Israeli strikes targeting sites across Iran started early on Saturday (February 28) and entered their fifth consecutive day on Wednesday. In response, Iran has launched more than 500 missiles and 2,000 attack drones toward US-aligned nations in the region, according to American officials. Several countries, including Israel, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, have reported Iranian missile or drone attacks directed at their territory. Most damage has occurred at military and civilian locations after air defense systems intercepted incoming projectiles. British officials also confirmed multiple drone attacks on a major UK military installation in Cyprus, while Turkey said Wednesday it shot down an Iranian ballistic missile headed toward its airspace. Also Read: Weeks after India port call, Iranian frigate, 'IRIS Dena', destroyed by US off Sri Lanka coast
Watch the video here

The UK’s Akrotiri base in Cyprus is classified as British sovereign territory, and Turkey is a NATO member state. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that an Israeli F-35I Adir fighter jet shot down an Iranian Yakovlev Yak-130 during the early phase of the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Iran. The development, disclosed at 10:30 am on Wednesday (March 4), signals a sharp escalation in hostilities. Iranian officials have yet to publicly confirm the incident. According to the IDF, this marks the first time an F-35 has destroyed a manned aircraft in aerial combat. It also represents the Israeli Air Force’s first air-to-air engagement involving a piloted enemy jet in nearly four decades. The last comparable encounter dates back to November 24, 1985, when an Israeli F-15 shot down two Syrian MiG-23 fighters over Lebanese airspace. Israeli officials said the stealth fighter intercepted and eliminated the Iranian jet without sustaining damage, reinforcing Israel’s claim of maintaining air dominance in the region.
What exactly happened?
Earlier in the week, Israeli forces reportedly targeted several Iranian combat aircraft positioned on runways, including older F-4 and F-5 jets, as they were preparing for departure. On Wednesday, during heightened aerial activity, the Yak-130 attempted to take off for a mission. The IDF stated that the aircraft was intercepted mid-flight by the F-35I, which neutralized the threat before it could proceed further. Also Read: ‘First in history’: Israel’s F-35I fighter jet ‘Adir’ shoots down Iran’s Air Force YAK-130

F-35I vs Yak-130
F-35I ‘Adir’ Israel’s F-35I Adir is a fifth-generation, stealth multirole fighter equipped with advanced avionics and sensor fusion systems. It can reach speeds of up to Mach 1.6 and has an operational combat radius of around 1,600 kilometers. With the capacity to carry more than 8,000 kilograms of weapons, including air-to-air missiles and precision-guided munitions, the jet is designed for both air superiority and ground-attack roles. The Israeli Air Force currently operates more than 30 of these aircraft, placing it among the most technologically advanced air forces in the region. Yak-130 The Yak-130, developed in Russia during the 1990s, was primarily designed as an advanced jet trainer to prepare pilots for modern frontline fighters such as the Su-57. While it can be configured for light combat and close air support missions, it is not classified as a frontline air superiority fighter. Compared with Iran’s aging fleet of F-4s and F-5s, the Yak-130 represents a more modern platform, though it remains significantly less capable than the F-35I in stealth, radar, and combat systems. https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-israel-war-explosions-rocks-northeastern-tehran-1772627383577/embed
The cost of stealth warfare
In statement to EurAsian Times, a former F-35 pilot noted that deploying top-tier stealth aircraft comes with strategic and financial considerations. Amid continuing tensions across West Asia and sustained American military action against Iranian positions, Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, has said the decision to strike was taken when what he described as the “right operational moment” presented itself, following years of preparation and military buildup. During the trip, he addressed the Knesset and held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an interview with The Indian Express, Azar clarified that no fixed timeline for the strike existed while Modi was in Israel. He explained that the military window emerged only after the Indian prime minister had left. Although regional security concerns were discussed during the visit, Azar said there was no concrete operational plan at that stage to disclose. According to him, Israel’s security cabinet authorised the mission on Saturday morning, roughly two days after Modi concluded his visit. A new report has claimed that the three American F-15 jets shot down over Kuwait was actually hit by Kuwaiti Air Force F/A-18 Hornet. This is in contrast with initial reports that claimed that Kuwait's ground-based air defense system downed the F-15 jets accidentally. While US has called it a “friendly fire” incident between Kuwait and America, Kuwaiti Army had previously confirmed the visuals of American jets crashing adding that several other US jets suffered similar fate. A report by The Wall Street Journal that is based on at least three US official sources, the pilot of the F/A-18 Hornet mistakenly launched three missiles towards the three US jets, which went down. A controversial succession A father-to-son handover would not be without controversy. Since the 1979 revolution, the Islamic Republic has framed itself as an alternative to monarchy, rejecting hereditary rule. A dynastic-style transition could test that claim and invite scrutiny, both inside Iran and abroad. Also read | Did the US, Israel bomb the site where Iran's new Supreme Leader is selected? The announcement follows threats from Iran to target vessels passing through the strategic waterway. Several tankers have already reported attacks in the region. As American forces press ahead with bombing missions inside Iran, US President Donald Trump finds himself directing a conflict that contrasts sharply with years of his own public warnings about US intervention abroad. Long before entering the White House, Trump repeatedly accused then-President Barack Obama of preparing to ignite a confrontation with Tehran for political advantage. He argued that such a move would needlessly cost American lives and serve electoral interests rather than national security. In January 2012, speaking on Sean Hannity’s radio program, Trump said of Obama: “I say that he starts a war in Iran before the election, which will make it very hard for the Republican to win. He’ll start a war, you know, lives will be wasted for no reason.” Hannity responded at the time by calling the idea of bombing Iran “the most chilling abuse of power, is what you’re describing, in American history.” “Yeah, I think it’s going to happen,” Trump replied. “There’ll be some kind of a war started. Instead of working it out, which you can do very easily. And not from weakness, hey look, you know, it’s called be a tough negotiator. You have a lot of strength. But you know, rather than doing that, I predict that he will start some kind of a war/skirmish or conflict.” There was no public evidence then that the Obama administration was planning military action against Iran, and no such war took place during his presidency. Still, Trump returned to the claim throughout 2011 and 2012. In April 2012, he told Fox host Jeannine Pirro: “I think that he would do it. I do believe he will do it, whether he does it under the guise of Israel or not, but I do believe he would do it.” In a 2011 video blog later deleted, Trump declared: “Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He’s weak, and he’s ineffective. So the only way he figures that he’s going to get reelected, as sure as you’re sitting there, is to start a war with Iran.” Speaking on “The Laura Ingraham Show” in April 2012, he again predicted conflict: “I happen to think that the president is going to start a war with Iran. I think it’ll be a short-term popular thing to do. And I think he’s going to do that for political reasons.” Also Read: Gulf countries could exhaust air defences within days amid relentless Iranian missile barrage More than a decade later, Trump is presiding over an expanding military campaign against Iran, the most significant foreign conflict of his presidency. Trump’s Iran offensive clashes with years of anti-war rhetoric from him and key aides, testing the core promise to avoid foreign conflicts

Gulf nations could run dangerously low on air defence interceptors within days if Iran maintains its current pace of missile and drone attacks, defence experts have warned. Tehran has launched widespread strikes across the Middle East, firing hundreds of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and kamikaze drones following attacks by the United States and Israel. While many incoming threats have been intercepted using advanced American-made systems, the sustained defence effort is rapidly depleting costly munitions stockpiles in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Fabian Hoffmann, a missile specialist at the University of Oslo, told The Wall Street Journal that the current rate of interceptor use is unsustainable. “The intensity of interceptor usage that we have seen over the last couple of days can’t be maintained for more than another week, probably a couple of days at most,” he said, warning that shortages could soon be felt. By Monday evening, the United Arab Emirates reported it had faced 174 ballistic missiles, eight cruise missiles and 689 drones over a three-day period. Officials said none of the missiles and 44 drones had struck their targets. Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar have also endured heavy bombardment, with Bahrain alone confronting around 70 incoming ballistic missiles. Iranian drones have struck the US embassy in Kuwait and Qatar’s primary liquefied natural gas facility. Also Read: 'EVERYTHING HAS BEEN KNOCKED OUT IN IRAN': Donald Trump Despite deploying sophisticated systems such as the Patriot missile defence platform and the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) system, intercepting ballistic missiles often requires two or three interceptors per incoming threat, dramatically accelerating stockpile depletion. Gulf nations have also used Patriot systems to counter Iran’s cheaper Shahed drones, adding further strain. Iran is believed to possess more than 2,000 missiles capable of reaching Gulf targets. Although US and Israeli forces have reportedly destroyed dozens of launchers in an effort to limit Tehran’s operational capacity, intelligence officials say Iran retains substantial reserves. Exact interceptor stockpile numbers remain classified. However, analysts estimate the UAE may hold fewer than 1,000 interceptors, while Kuwait and Bahrain may possess roughly 500 and 100 respectively. The escalation has also raised questions about American munitions reserves. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (March 3) that the United States and Israel have inflicted significant damage on Iran in their military campaign, telling reporters as he met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that “just about everything’s been knocked out,” and that operations were progressing successfully. Trump claimed that he believed Iran was preparing to strike before he acted, appearing to step back from Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s earlier statement that Israel had initiated the conflict. "I think they were going to attack first, and I didn't want that to happen. So, if anything, I might have forced Israel's hand," Trump told reporters. Trump also discussed what he described as a worst-case outcome of military action against Iran, suggesting it could result in a successor similar to the country’s late supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. 'EVERYTHING HAS BEEN KNOCKED OUT IN IRAN': Donald Trump

"I guess the worst case would be, we do this, and then somebody takes over who's as bad as the previous person, right?" he said during the meeting with Merz. "That could happen. We don't want that to happen." US President Donald Trump said the US-Israel strikes on Iran have knocked out nearly all targets and are going well, as he met with German Chancellor Merz on Tuesday

The death of Ali Khamenei is ‘historically significant’ but will not ‘automatically’ bring down Iran’s political system, Farah Pahlavi was quoted as saying to the news agency AFP on Tuesday (March 3). “The passing of a man, however central he may be to the architecture of power, does not automatically mean the end of a system,” said Pahlavi, who has lived in exile in Paris since being forced out during the 1979 revolution. “What will be decisive,” she said, was “the ability of the Iranian people to unite around a peaceful, orderly and sovereign transition to a state governed by the rule of law”, adding that her son Reza Pahlavi “is in the process of preparing”. Also Read: Iran-Israel war: Dow falls 2.2% as geopolitical fear grip US markets
Reza Pahlavi urges unity from ethnic minorities
Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s last shah, urged national unity among the country’s ethnic minorities on Tuesday as war spread across the Middle East.
