US President Donald Trump said Iran’s leadership has been severely weakened and suggested the country now needs new leadership that maintains fair relations with the United States and its regional allies. Speaking in a phone interview with CNN on Friday (March 6), Trump claimed Iran’s position had dramatically changed over the past week and argued that the country no longer holds the same strength it once did. “Iran is not the same country it was a week ago,” he told CNN in a brief phone interview. “A week ago they were powerful, and now they’ve been indeed neutered.” Trump also expressed confidence that selecting a new leader in Iran would not be difficult, adding that he believes the United States should play a role in the process. He compared the situation to developments in Venezuela earlier this year, when the US captured former president Nicolas Maduro and his deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, assumed power. “It’s gonna work very easily. It’s going to work like did in Venezuela. We have a wonderful leader there. She’s doing a fantastic job. India has granted refuge to an Iranian warship, IRIS Lavan, which docked at Kochi amid heightened regional tensions following the sinking of another Iranian vessel, IRIS Dena, in the Indian Ocean. Government sources told WION that days before the IRIS Dena incident south of Sri Lanka, Iran approached India seeking permission for IRIS Lavan to dock at an Indian port. The vessel had reportedly developed technical issues while operating in the region for the International Fleet Review (IFR-2026). The request was received on February 28, 2026, suggesting that docking at Kochi was urgent due to the ship’s technical problems. Approval was granted on March 1, and IRIS Lavan subsequently docked at Kochi on March 4. Its crew of 183 personnel are currently being accommodated at naval facilities in Kochi. IRIS Lavan, a Hengam-class landing ship commissioned in January 1985, is primarily used for amphibious sealift and logistics operations in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters. The vessel was part of a group of three Iranian ships that travelled to India to participate in IFR-2026 off Visakhapatnam in mid-February. The contingent included the Bandar Abbas-class fleet support ship IRIS Bushehr and the Moudge-class frigate IRIS Dena. The international naval event, reviewed by President Droupadi Murmu on February 18, brought together ships from dozens of countries, including the United States, Russia and Iran, as part of a display of maritime cooperation. However, the return voyage turned tragic for IRIS Dena. On March 4, the same day IRIS Lavan docked in Kochi, the Moudge-class frigate, commissioned in June 2021 and named after Mount Dena, was reportedly torpedoed by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean south of Sri Lanka. Reports indicate that nearly 100 sailors were killed in the attack, with bodies recovered by Sri Lankan forces. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from Tehran, which described it as an “atrocity,” and has raised concerns over freedom of navigation in international waters. Meanwhile, IRIS Bushehr, the third vessel in the Iranian group, sought refuge at Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee port.

US President Donald Trump on Friday (March 6) said there will be ‘no deal’ with Iran unless it agrees to ‘unconditional surrender’, hardening his stance as tensions escalate after joint strikes by the United States and Israel. Iran, meanwhile, has launched retaliatory strikes against Israel, U.S. military installations, and countries across the region. The widening confrontation has drawn in at least 14 countries across the Middle East and beyond, disrupting oil flows and complicating international air travel. Officials report that the conflict has resulted in at least 1,230 deaths in Iran, more than 100 in Lebanon, and about a dozen in Israel. Six US troops have also been killed. Israel says the Iran war has entered its ‘next phase’, claiming 60% of missile launchers destroyed as strikes intensify and regional tensions escalate

The skies over West Asia have turned into a raging battlefield. Waves of Iranian drones and missiles are streaking across the night, while the United States and Israel scramble to shoot them down in what is fast becoming one of the most intense aerial confrontations in the region’s recent history. Across Iran, Israel, and the Gulf, the night sky is lit by fire trails, explosions, and interceptor launches. Iranian retaliation has targeted American bases, Israeli cities, and strategic locations across the region. In response, US and Israeli air defense systems have been firing almost continuously, trying to neutralise incoming threats before they strike. But behind this dramatic battlefield spectacle lies a growing strategic concern: the United States could soon begin running dangerously low on the very missiles needed to defend the region. The air war unfolding over West Asia is relentless. Iran has adopted a strategy of overwhelming air defenses by launching waves of kamikaze drones and missiles. These attacks are designed not just to penetrate defenses but also to force defenders to fire expensive interceptor missiles repeatedly. Also Read: 'Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me': Trump calls for role in Iran's leader selection Pentagon officials have acknowledged the challenge. American air defenses cannot intercept every incoming drone, particularly when many of Iran’s weapons fly low and slow, slipping beneath radar coverage. This forces defensive systems to fire multiple interceptors in quick succession, draining stockpiles. Despite these concerns, Washington insists it retains the upper hand. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has argued that Iran cannot outlast the United States in a prolonged conflict. According to him, America retains the capacity to dictate the tempo of the war and possesses vast ammunition reserves capable of sustaining operations for as long as necessary. Iran’s strategy, however, is based on a simple calculation: cost and numbers. A typical Iranian Shahed drone reportedly costs between $30,000 and $40,000 to produce. By contrast, advanced interceptor missiles such as Patriot air defense missiles or AMRAAM interceptors can cost millions of dollars each. Every successful interception saves lives and protects critical infrastructure. But it also burns through valuable missile stocks.

In a prolonged war of attrition, this imbalance in cost could become decisive. The side that exhausts its arsenal first risks losing its defensive advantage. The pressure is already mounting in Washington. Retired Admiral Sandy Winnefeld, the former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has warned that the United States could face a serious shortage of key missile defense systems if the conflict with Iran continues at its current pace. According to US Central Command estimates, Iran has launched more than 500 missiles and over 2,000 drones since the fighting escalated. The scale of the barrage has raised concerns about sustainability on both sides. Reports also suggest that top US military General Dan Caine had privately warned President Donald Trump about potential shortages in interceptor stockpiles shortly before the strikes that triggered the latest escalation. https://www.wionews.com/videos/israel-iran-war-iran-fires-heavy-destruction-ballistic-missile-towards-israel-1772729061441/embed As the skies over West Asia continue to burn, the battle is no longer just about missiles in the air. It is also about industrial capacity, supply chains, and the brutal mathematics of modern warfare. The question now looming over the conflict is simple yet critical: how long can the US continue repelling Iran’s relentless drone and missile barrage? Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Trump says he should be involved in selecting Iran’s next supreme leader after Khamenei’s killing, rejecting the possibility of his son taking power

The Trump administration, preparing for the possibility of additional American casualties and weighing whether to deploy US troops inside Iran, has begun contacting Iranian opposition groups as potential partners in efforts to destabilize Tehran’s leadership. Trump’s outreach to Kurdish leaders signals a potential strategy to spark unrest in Iran, but Kurdish groups fear retaliation and question the US commitment

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the main goal of the press conference was to reassure a public that he described as ‘worried sick’. Early in his statement, Starmer defended his decision not to participate in the initial US-Israel strikes on Iran and his refusal to allow American aircraft to launch offensive operations from British bases. “My focus is on providing calm, level-headed leadership in the national interest,” the prime minister said, adding that this meant “having the strength to stand firm by our values and our principles no matter the pressure to do otherwise”. The comments appeared to reference his decision to resist pressure from Donald Trump. Starmer reiterated that the UK’s longstanding approach toward Iran supports diplomacy rather than military escalation. “That’s why I took the decision that the UK would not join the initial strike. That decision was deliberate. It was in the national interest. And I stand by it.” Unlike earlier comments in Parliament, where he suggested the strikes might lack a clear strategy and hinted they could be illegal, Starmer framed his latest explanation primarily as a policy decision. He stressed that protecting British citizens remained his top priority. According to the prime minister, the UK had already begun strengthening its military posture in the region before the strikes occurred. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now closed to vessels from the United States, Israel, Europe and their Western allies. The statement was issued on Thursday (March 5) through Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, following several days of uncertainty around one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints.According to the IRGC, the decision aligns with what it described as Iran’s rights under international law during wartime. The force warned that ships linked to the United States, Israel, Europe and their supporters would face military action if they attempt to pass through the waterway. "We had previously said that, based on international laws and resolutions, in times of war, the Islamic Republic of Iran will have the right to control the passage through the Strait of Hormuz," said the IRGC, according to state broadcaster IRIB. The strait has effectively been inactive since the United States and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran on Saturday. The escalation has triggered a sharp rise in global oil prices and heightened concerns about disruptions to the world economy. Earlier in the week, Iran indicated it would allow only Chinese-flagged vessels to pass through the strait, describing the move as a sign of appreciation for Beijing’s stance toward Tehran since the conflict began. The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, on Wednesday (March 4), accused US President Donald Trump of dragging Americans into an unfair war with Iran at the behest of Israeli ambitions. He further claimed that 500 US troops were killed in the previous five days of the war, suggesting that Washington is downplaying its casualties in “Operation Epic Fury”. Larijani has stepped up to fill the power vacuum left following the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes on March 1. Following Khamenei's death, Larijani refuted media reports in the United States claiming he had made a new push to resume nuclear talks with Washington. "Mr Trump, with Netanyahu's clownish antics, dragged the American people into an unfair war with Iran.
Who is Ali Larijani?
Larijani, a Khamenei loyalist, belongs from Islamic clerical family that lived in the upper echelon of Iranian aristocrats. The Larijani family has been compared to the Kennedys of the US by the Times Magazine in 2009, due to their institutional and embodied capital in Iran. At the age of 20, he married Farideh Motahari, the daughter of Morteza Motahhari, a close confidant of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini. He had previously served as the Speaker of Parliament, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Force and had been involved in the nuclear negotiation between the US and Iran. Larijani has a deep understanding of Western Philosophy, often called a “mathematician philosopher”, and wrote books on 18th-century German Idealist and Enlightenment thinker Emmanuel Kant. Politically, Larijani is a conservative pragmatist. But following the US attacks on Iran, Larijani had delivered a message of fervour.“America and the Zionist regime [Israel] have set the heart of the Iranian nation ablaze,” he wrote on social media. “We will burn their hearts. We will make the Zionist criminals and the shameless Americans regret their actions.”

This comes after the US and Israeli military launched strikes on Iran on Saturday (Feb 28), killing Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and several other top Iranian officials. The operation was named ‘Epic Fury’ by the US and ‘Lion’s Roar’ by Israel. The attacks came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and ongoing talks over Iran’s nuclear program. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on Israel and US military bases in the region, including in Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.Stuart Carson described hearing loud bangs on Saturday morning, which he initially assumed to be coming from construction nearby. However, later he saw Iranian missiles and drones being intercepted in the sky. He called me and said, we’ve been attacked in some way, shape, or form.”He described the chaotic scenes in the lobby of the hotel, “The front doors were damaged, and one of the bell boys was being pulled away. At that point, we just didn’t know what to do.” Carson, a father of two, said that they immediately took shelter at a nearby beach and later spent the evening in the basement of the hotel.“Once dawn broke, we started to feel a bit more comfortable with the situation and just gathered our thoughts and had breakfast in the hotel,” he said. “We decided just to get out of there. So we headed north and booked into a hotel where it was a lot quieter.”As many flights in the region were cancelled due to the war, Carson resorted to booking a number of flights after his original flight with British Airways was cancelled. He managed to arrive at Belfast City Airport in Northern Ireland on Tuesday evening.“We were looking at all options but we wanted to just focus on trying to get as close to home as possible,” he said. “When we were watching the map on the flight, we knew we were kind of out of the danger zone.”“So after the first hour, we started to feel relief.”

US President Donald Trump is apparently asking a war-ravaged nation for help in his and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's surprise attack on Iran. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (Mar 4) revealed that the US has asked for Kyiv's "help in defending against Shahed drones". Notably, Ukraine for the last four years has been engaged in a war with its neighbour, Russia. What is Trump asking of Ukraine? Here's what we know.
US turns to Ukraine for help
Zelensky, in his nightly address on Wednesday, revealed that America and its allies are asking Ukraine for help in defending themselves against the Iranian threat."Partners are turning to us, to Ukraine, asking for help in defending against Shahed drones, with expertise and real operational experience," he said. Singling out the US, he noted, "There have also been requests from the American side".On X, Zelensky confirmed that US has asked Ukraine for help. “They are seeking our expertise. We are open. If their representatives come, we will provide the expertise. Especially since there is also a request from Europeans and from the United States,” he wrote.

This comes as multiple military experts flagged the many risks America faces in this war in the Middle East. On one hand, James Alexander "Sandy" Winnefeld Jr., the former vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned that the US could run out of interceptor stocks in "a matter of days". On the other hand, during a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, top military officials led by the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Dan Caine, told lawmakers that while US defences can destroy most of Iran's drones, stopping every single drone may not be possible for the US military.
Trump-Zelensky: Enemies to friends
The POTUS, since his comeback to the White House, has sparred with the Ukrainian president multiple times. In February 2025, Trump made the headlines for poking fun at Zelensky's clothes and complaining about him not wearing a suit to the Oval Office. "Ooh, you're all dressed up. He's all dressed up today!" Trump said at the time.In later months, he even labelled Zelensky a "dictator" and blamed Kyiv for "millions" of deaths during the Russia-Ukraine war. Did Iran fire missile at Turkey? Tehran responds after NATO shoots down ‘air threat’

A former top US military commander has warned that Washington could lose a critical "race against time" with Iran if American interceptor missile stocks begin to run dry. Speaking to The Times, James Alexander "Sandy" Winnefeld Jr. said that the outcome of the conflict could depend on a simple question: Which side runs out of weapons first? The former vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff warned that the US could run out of interceptor stocks in "a matter of days". What does it mean for the US-Israel joint military operation against Iran? All you need to know.
'A race against time'
Appearing on The Times’s The General & The Journalist podcast, Winnefeld, who happens to be the most senior figure yet to speak out critically about the war warned that the US was engaged in a "race against time".Iran, he said, is relying heavily on cheap drones and missile barrages aimed at US bases and allied targets in the region. The United States, meanwhile, must rely on far more expensive air defence interceptors to shoot them down. The imbalance, he suggested, could become a serious problem. "It’s the sophisticated air defence munitions that I would be worrying about right now — the Patriots, the AMRAAM missiles that are out there," he said."Do we have enough of those in a race against Iran’s inventory of Shahed drones and ballistic missiles? Who runs out first? It’s a race against time."
The cost of shooting down drones
According to the US’s Central Command (Centcom), till Wednesday (Mar 4), Iran had launched more than 500 missiles and 2,000 drones. This includes the Shahed drone, which, according to Winnefeld cost somewhere around $20,000 compared to the interceptors used to destroy them, such as the Patriot missile system, which can cost millions."There is also an economic disparity between shooting down a $20,000 Shahed drone with a $4 million missile," he noted."You start to run out very quickly," he said. "You’ll run out of those Patriots probably before Iran runs out of Shaheds."Notably, before the war, Tehran was believed to possess roughly 4,000 short and long-range missiles along with tens of thousands of Shahed drones.
American stockpile dwindling
Reports suggest that the issue had already been raised inside the Pentagon by top US generals. During a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill Tuesday, top military officials led by the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Dan Caine, told lawmakers that Iran has been deploying large numbers of one-way attack drones in recent days. The Middle East crisis has once again brought to the fore prophecies made by several mystics about the jarring world situation. Nostradamus, the French psychic who is said to have predicted major world events like 9/11 and Princess Diana's death, talked about a "swarm of bees" in his book "Les Propheties", written in 1555. Those who believe in his prophecies say that this prediction is linked to the Iran war, where the "swarm of bees" refers to the drones playing an active role in the Middle East conflict. The passage named Quatrain I:26 reads, "The great swarm of bees will arise… by night the ambush…". It remained vague till before the war between the US, Israel and Iran started. Earlier, his followers linked the prophecy to the growth of world leaders, like Putin and Trump. But seeing how deadly drones are being used in the conflict, the bees seem to be a reference to the unmanned vehicles. Further, these are one-way drones, which detonate after they striking, similar to honeybees who die after stinging. Also Read: Flying at only 80 feet altitude, Iranian planes almost hit largest American air base in Middle East: Report
Drone attacks in the Iran-US war
The US is using drones that are part of Task Force Scorpion, America's first Kamikaze drone unit. The US had been watching the Shahed drones for years, and over the years, worked on the technology and "made it better" to develop their own loitering drones. "Seven months great war, people dead through evil / Rouen, Evreux the King will not fail," the psychic wrote in his book. Iran has been hitting US bases in several Gulf countries, such as the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Canada hinted on Thursday that the country could join the war against Iran. Prime Minister Mark Carney said that he couldn’t rule out military participation in the Middle East crisis. "One can never categorically rule out participation. We will stand by our allies,” he said at a conference with his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, in Canberra.

Two Nostradamus prophecies have resurfaced amid the ongoing Iran war. One of them is being linked to the extensive use of drones in the conflict, while the other talks about how long the war could last. The French psychic wrote the predictions in his book “Les Propheties”.
