The debate regarding ODI cricket's relevance in the present era continues. Over the past few weeks, many former, as well as active cricketers and experts of the game, have opined on whether ODI cricket is losing its sheen and feel it cannot be compared to the shortest format in terms of entertainment value.

When it comes to T20 cricket, it is continuing its rapid rise with each passing year as many non-cricketing countries have also taken a liking to the sport by investing their time and energy in the format. On the other hand, Test cricket has seen some humdingers in the last few years and the emergence of the ICC World Test Championship has acted as a huge boost for the purest form of the game. Amid all this, ODI cricket remains stagnant and many feel several bilateral 50-over series need to cut down or the format can exist only in the form of the World Cup.

Amid all this, Ben Stokes' shocking ODI retirement -- citing difficulty in sustaining himself at the top level by playing all formats -- has intensified the whole debate. On Wednesday (July 27), ICC chief executive George Allardice said the structuring of the game's three formats was part of the discussion at the governing body's annual general meeting in Birmingham, where the Future Tours Programme (FTP) 2023-27 got finalised.

"I think at this stage there is some discussion, not specifically about ODIs, but about the mix of formats within the calendar," Allardice said in a video conference as per a report in Sky Sports. "Countries have been, in their FTPs, are still scheduling a healthy number of ODIs as well."

Further, Allardice stated that some members put "particular attention on their domestic leagues" but insisted that their commitment to international and bilateral cricket remains "as strong as it's ever been".

"Each of them has to manage that balance between domestic competitions, their international schedule and the management of their players. Each of those boards is in a slightly different situation. So there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to that balancing issue," he added.

Recently, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri said on Fan Code, "There is no harm in shortening the span of the game. When one-day cricket started, it was of 60 overs. When we won the World Cup in 1983, it was of 60 overs. After that, people thought that 60 overs were a bit too long. People found that span of overs between 20 to 40 hard to digest. So they reduced it from 60 to 50."

"So years have gone by now since that decision so why not reduce it from 50 to 40 now. Because you got to be forward-thinking and evolve. It stayed for 50 for too long,” he added.

Meanwhile, the likes of Wasim Akram, Shahid Afridi and Usman Khawaja have also echoed similar sentiments whereas the likes of Quinton de Kock and Eoin Morgan have continued to back the 50-over format.

Is ODI cricket on the decline? ICC plays down threat to shorter format

Cheteshwar Pujara continues his dream run for Sussex in County Championship. In the County C'ship Division Two game between Sussex and Middlesex, being held at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, London, Pujara was at his punishing best as the right-hander slammed his third double ton for his side after the opposition opted to bowl first.

A day after Pujara completed his fifth century of the season, the Test specialist for India converted his hundred into a double century before being the last man to fall for a highly-impressive 403-ball 231, studded with 21 fours and 3 sixes. Riding on Pujara's 231 and Tom Alsop's 135, Sussex compiled a mammoth 523 all-out. After his dismissal, the Indian batter received a thunderous applause by his teammates and spectators at the Lord's balcony and the famous corridor of the iconic stadium. Here's the video:

Babar Azam-led Pakistan completed their second-most successful run-chase in the purest format when they defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets after chasing down a stiff 342 during Day 5 of the Galle Test, on Wednesday (July 20).

Following this win, Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique has certainly raised his stocks in world cricket. The opening batter was outstanding with the willow in hand as his 408-ball 160 not out propelled Pakistan to a famous win in the two-match Test series opener, in the Island nation. His knock comprises 7 fours and a six as he struck two fifty-plus stands, with Imam-ul-Haq and Md Rizwan, and a century-stand with skipper Babar (55) before an unbeaten 41-run seventh-wicket partnership with Mohammad Nawaz took the visitors home.

During his special knock, Shafique played out as many as 408 deliveries and has become the first batter to script a new and unique world record. After the game, Babar lauded his teammates and said at the post-match presentation, "First innings we did well with the ball. I should thank the tailenders for the support they game me, especially Naseem Shah. We know how to play spin so we believed. Me and Abdullah were just trying to build a partnership. As a youngster he is showing a lot of class. Really pleasing to see him perform well."

Meanwhile, Player-of-the-Match Shafique stated, "I am happy that we were able to chase. Congratulations to the entire team for this record chase. Our plan was simple. We had to go get the runs. It was difficult but with time it was easier. Spinners with the new ball was slightly tough to play. Babar is one of the best in the world. We have learnt so much from him. I enjoyed batting with him in the middle."

The second and final Test gets underway on July 24 at the same ground, i.e. the Galle International Stadium, Galle.

Shafique becomes 1st batter to script new world record during Pakistan's historic Test run-chase vs SL

Babar Azam-led Pakistan rode on opener Abdullah Shafique's majestic 160 not out to complete their second-highest run-chase as visitors beat Sri Lanka by four wickets on Day 5 of the first Test in Galle on Wednesday (July 20).

Resuming the fifth day's play needing 120 more runs, with seven wickets in hand, Babar & Co. had the upper hand. Although the visitors lost their captain Babar for 55, opener Shafique held his end till stumps on the penultimate day and carried on from his end despite losing Md Rizwan, Agha Salman and Hasan Ali to take his side to a record run-chase. Pakistan, thus, prevented late hiccups to go 1-0 up in the three-match series versus the Dimuth Karunaratne-led Islanders.

Abdullah batted for as many as 408 deliveries for his patient and steady 160-run unbeaten knock. He held fifty-plus stands with Imam-ul-Haq, Rizwan and a century partnership with Babar before Mohammad Nawaz and he took Pakistan past the finish line with an unbeaten 41-run seventh-wicket stand.

Earlier, hosts Lanka rode on in-form Dinesh Chandimal's 76 to post 222 after opting to bat first in Galle. In reply, Babar's 119 took Pakistan to 218 all-out, conceding a four-run lead. While Chandimal's 94 and Kusal Mendis' 76 took Sri Lanka to 337 all-out, setting up a 342-run target, Shafique propelled the visitors to a stunning win. Interestingly, Pakistan's highest-run chase in the format also came against the same opposition in 2015, when they chased down 377 in Pallekele.

Abdullah Shafique's 160* propels Pakistan to their 2nd-highest run-chase, beat Sri Lanka in Galle Test

On Monday (July 17), Ben Stokes left the cricketing fraternity shellshocked when he announced that he will step aside from ODI cricket post the England-South Africa three-match 50-over series opener in Durham on July 18 (Tuesday).

At 31, Stokes is one of the fittest athletes in world cricket. The all-rounder has already won an ODI World Cup medal, in 2019, has over 5,000 runs in Tests and was also part of Eoin Morgan-led England's 2016 T20 World Cup campaign, where Stokes' 19-run final over in the summit clash conceded the trophy to West Indies. The English star cricketer is easily one of the ambassadors of the game and an integral part of his national side across formats. Then, what led to the recently-appointed Test captain retiring from ODIs?

Stokes recently opened up on his ODI retirement and told BBC's Test Match Special, "The more cricket that is played, the better for the sport, but you want a product that is of the highest quality. You want the best players to be playing as much as you possibly can, all the time."

"It isn't just me or us, you see it all around the world now where teams are having to rest some players in a certain series so they feel like they are getting a break. We are not cars, you can't just fill us up and we'll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again."

In his column for The Daily Mail, former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain also pointed out, "Every time he [Stokes] goes onto that field, he wants to be 100% committed, not 80% - and that is what makes him the player he is."

"Some might suggest 80% of Stokes is enough but the problem is that once you play at 80%, it can lead lead to a drop in performance in another format. Just look at what has happened to Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, for example. He doesn't want to become stale. Or go through the motions. He couldn't do that," he mentioned.

"Yes, his decision was something of a shout to the administrators because at the age of 31 someone like him shouldn't have to retire from a certain format," added the former right-handed batsman.

Thus, Stokes' retirement leads to a burning question: is there too much cricket being played nowadays? Well, the answer to this is a straightforward YES. For the unversed, England have so far already played four Tests (three versus New Zealand, one against India), seven ODIs (three each versus Netherlands, India and one versus SA, with two more on cards) and three T20Is (with an equal number of them to follow suit versus the Proteas) in ongoing 2022 home summer.

The emergence of franchise cricket has surely been a huge boon for the game, tapping into new territories, seeing the emergence of new star players worldwide, and expanding the overall market. However, for any franchise cricket to be a hit, it needs a starry presence and, hence, many top players' participation is ultimately adding to their workload.

Even in the IPL, it is almost mandatory for the likes of Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, etc., to make their presence felt due to their huge demand. Thus, they end up picking and choosing games at the international level. With ICC's schedule also not helping one bit -- with too many bilaterals lined up along with a mega event each year till 2031 -- players need to take care of themselves and, hence, ask for frequent rests to remain fit and fresh, keep their passion and intensity for the game alive and kicking as well as deliver the goods.

With so much at stake in every level, it is the players who are being used as puppets -- being asked to move around and dance to the tunes of rigorous schedules across formats. Players are the tools by which the game expands. However, they are certainly not machines for churning out huge profits along with being also expected to perform in all formats at the international level.

Thus, it won't be surprising that Stokes might go onto be the first of many all-format players who will retire from a particular format to prolong their respective careers. The all-rounder has surprised only those who are oblivious to the extensively gruelling demands of the modern-day game. His decision isn't really a shocker. It might just be the start of an unwanted trend.

Beware world cricket! Ben Stokes might be first of many to give up a format to ensure longevity

Team India were favourites to win the fifth and final rescheduled Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham, before Ben Stokes-led England scripted a remarkable seven-wicket win by chasing a mammoth 378 on Day 5 on Tuesday (July 05). With this defeat, India lost a golden opportunity to win their first-ever Test series on English soil since 2007 as both sides settled for a 2-2 scoreline.

Jasprit Bumrah-led India were asked to bat first and posted 416, after being 98 for 5, riding on centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, England folded for 284, giving a sizeable 132-run lead to the visitors. India only managed 245 in their second essay to lose the plot and couldn't remove final innings' centurions Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root as the duo's unbroken 269-run fourth-wicket stand took England to a historic seven-wicket win in Edgbaston.

With this defeat, India have complicated their journey enroute to the ICC World Test Championship final. While India still have quite a few games left in the ongoing second cycle, they find themselves at the fourth spot -- with a percentage of points (PCT) of 52.08%. Thus, they have their task cut-out to enter the finale for the second time on the trot. Here's how India can still make it to the final two:

Explained: How can Team India enter World Test Championship final after losing Edgbaston Test

New Zealand had their chances but failed to capitalise in the opening two Tests, of the three-match series, versus hosts England. In the third and inconsequential tie, being held at Headingley, Leeds, Daryl Mitchell -- who was been in red-hot form for the visitors -- continued his merry run to slam his third consecutive ton in the series.

Mitchell had slammed a ton in the second innings of the opening Test, at Lord's, and scored a century in the first innings of the second Test before repeating his heroics in NZ's first essay in the final Test. after Kane Williamson & Co. opted to bat first. With Kiwis reeling at 123-5, the onus once again fell on Mitchell-Tom Blundell as the duo stitched yet another century-stand -- third on the trot -- to bail NZ out of a crisis. While keeper-batter Blundell fell for a well-made 55, Mitchell registered his fourth ton overall, the third of the series.

By virtue of another triple-figure knock, the 31-year-old Mitchell joined an elite list of cricketers. The right-hander is now only the fourth player in the 21st century to score three back-to-back Test centuries as an overseas player on a tour of England. In this way, the star NZ player has joined Rahul Dravid (2002, 2011), Mohammad Yusuf (2006) and Steve Smith (2019) in an elite list of batters to have achieved this rare feat.

In addition, Mitchell became the first Kiwi player in 73 years to score in excess of 400 runs in a Test series against England. Courtesy of his impressive 109, NZ were all-out for 329 and have now dismissed half of the English side for 55 as hosts are in a spot of bother.

Talking about Kohli, he was the captain of the Indian team when the five-match Test series between India and England took place last year. Before the final Test, which was set to be held in Manchester, the Indian camp was jolted by the Covid-19 crisis and, hence, the series decider was cancelled with the visitors 2-1 up in the series.

This time around, Kohli remains a vital cog in the Indian Test line-up, who is on the cusp of creating history, but Rohit Sharma has succeeded him as all-format captain. Under Rohit, India will be desperate to go for a win or, at least, ensure a draw to return with a Test series win in England.

Jonny Bairstow slams 2nd-fastest ton by Englishman as ENG chase down 299 vs NZ, win 2nd Test & series

Joe Root has been in sensational form of late. After taking England to an impressive five-wicket win courtesy of his ton in the series opener of the three Tests versus New Zealand, at Lord's, the former skipper registered yet another triple-figure knock on Day 3 of the second and penultimate Test versus the Tom Latham-led New Zealanders, at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

After the Kiwis made a mammoth 553 all-out, riding on Daryl Mitchell's 190 and Tom Blundell's 106, England were 147-2 when Root came in the middle, along with Ollie Pope. While Pope also scored a memorable century, Root slammed his 27th ton in the format. By virtue of his knock, he has now equalled with other Fab Four members such as Virat Kohli and Steve Smith in terms of Test match hundreds. While Kohli had reached his 27th ton in whites in late 2019, Smith scored his last hundred in early 2021.

Interestingly, the 31-year-old Root had only 17 Test tons at the end of 2020. Since the start of 2021, he has scored 10 centuries as his incredible form continues. The Trent Bridge ton was also the quickest for Root. Courtesy of his knock, Root also went past former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar's run-tally (10,112). The Englishman, who remains unbeaten on 163, is now the 12th highest run-scorer in the purest format.

At stumps on Day 3 of the second Test, England are 473-5, trailing New Zealand by only 80 runs with Root and Ben Foakes in the middle. Will Root convert his hundred into a double ton on Day 4?

James Anderson added another feather to his illustrious hat during the fourth and penultimate day of the second Test between England and New Zealand. On Monday (June 13), the 39-year-old claimed his 650th Test scalp by dismissing NZ skipper Tom Latham with a peach of a delivery.

After Trent Boult's 10th five-fer enabled NZ a vital 14-run first-innings lead, Latham & Co. went out to bat in their second essay and were jolted soon with the stand-in skipper being dismissed for 4. The left-hander left a delivery that angled in and hit the stumps as Anderson attained his 650th wicket in the purest format. Here's the video of the unplayable delivery by the veteran pacer:

There was total error in judgment from Latham as NZ were stunned early in their second essay after managing a slender lead in the second and penultimate Test, with the series on the line. On the other hand, here's a look at the top-five wicket-takers in Test cricket after Anderson claimed his 650th victim:

Muttiah Muralitharan - 800

Shane Warne - 708

James Anderson - 650*

Anil Kumble - 619

Glenn McGrath - 563

Thus, Anderson remains the highest wicket-taker in the format among pacers with the second-best -- among active bowlers -- being his teammate Stuart Broad (who has accounted for 543 scalps so far).

After Anderson's early strike, NZ went to lunch at 27/1, with an overall lead of 41. Earlier in the morning session of Day 4, England were dismissed for 539 courtesy of Joe Root (176), Ollie Pope (146) and Ben Foakes' 56. Kiwis have to bat well in the second session to prevent a collapse and then look for setting up a challenging target.

England and New Zealand were involved in a humdinger of a clash when both sides met each other in the series opener of the three-match Test series at Lord's last week. In a riveting clash, Kane Williamson-led New Zealand set up a challenging 277-run target for the Ben Stokes-led hosts, after being dismissed for 132 in the first essay, and had reduced the home team to 69/4 before former skipper Joe Root's sublime 115 rescued England and took them to a memorable five-wicket win over the Kiwis.

Despite giving up the captaincy in the format, Root continued to lead the charge with the bat and his 26th Test ton also helped him reach the 10,000-run mark in Tests. He became the second Englishman, after Sir Alastair Cook, and 14th batsman overall to achieve the illustrious feat. Such has been Root's form that he has amassed 2192 runs including 9 centuries in the last 18 months, whereas his competitors such as Virat Kohli, Williamson and Steve Smith haven't hit a single ton since early January 2021.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator feels that nobody really remembers the 50-over matches anymore and called for changes to be made in the ODI format. Before him, ex-Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri had called up for the discontinuation of T20I matches and restricting the format to only World Cups. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, the 44-year-old cricket expert Chopra pointed out, "If you see the interest levels, keeping the Tests aside as everything is not commercialization, I feel ODI cricket is the most boring contest. "It is the format where neither the broadcasters nor the fans enjoy it. That's ODI cricket and there are multiple reasons for that. In 50-over cricket, the 30 overs in the middle are neither a Test nor a T20. ODI is not a format that is going to keep you engaged for too long," he opined.

Chopra further added, "I think ODI cricket is struggling. It is not T20I cricket that is struggling. Let the T20 internationals continue because the broadcasters will need them, or else they won't give you the money. Every country's broadcast rights will take a major hit."

Ever since the T20 cricket rose to prominence, it has affected both Test and ODI format. While a lot is being done to keep the purest format relevant in current times, with the introduction of a WTC, and many Test series have lived upto expectations as well recently -- with less number of draws -- ODI cricket has taken a hit, especially when it comes to bilaterals involving lowly-ranked sides.

Tests, ODIs or T20Is? Former Indian opener picks the format which is 'most boring and meaningless'

The ever-increasing domestic T20 leagues are squeezing bilateral ties and Test cricket runs the risk of witnessing a reduction in its volume in a decade's time, warns ICC chairman Greg Barclay. Barclay, who was appointed as ICC chair in November 2020, said the world body will face a serious challenge in deciding the next Future Tours Program starting next year.

"There is a men's and women's event every year and the growth of domestic leagues are forcing things from the bottom and ... What is getting squeezed is bilateral cricket and so we are trying to fit everything in," Barclay told BBC's Test Match Special during the ongoing first game of the three-match series between England and New Zealand at Lord's.

"There will be some unfortunate consequences from a playing experience and a revenue point of view for some of those countries who won't get the amount of cricket they might hope to have and they won't get exposure, particularly against India and to a lesser extent Australia and England. So we will see a squeeze.

"In 10-15 years time I still see Test cricket being an integral part (of the game), it may be that there is less of it," he added.

Barclay hinted that the "big three" of world cricket -- India, Australia and England -- will be largely unaffected by the adjustments in Test cricket.

"Some countries may have to make room and play less Test cricket. Some of the smaller full members will have to accept that they can't play the amount of Test cricket that they wanted to, so we may see a lessening of that - four or five a year - whereas England, Australia and India, I think, will be playing Test cricket as they are now."

The ICC chair, however, doesn't see the longer format evolving in women's cricket at a significant pace.

"To play Test cricket, you've got to have structures domestically that allow you to play long-form cricket and they don't really exist in any of the countries at the moment, so I can't really see women's Test cricket or long-form cricket evolving at any particular speed at all," he said.

"That's not to say that those countries that choose to play Test cricket - Australia and England - who provide that to the women can't do so, but I don't see it as part of the landscape moving forward to any real extent at all."

"If you look at strategically the way that cricket is going, there's no doubt that white-ball cricket, short-form cricket, is the way of the future.

"That's the game that's sought after by fans, that's where the broadcasters are putting their resource, it's what's driving the money," Barclay concluded.

The ever-increasing domestic T20 leagues are squeezing bilateral ties and Test cricket runs the risk of witnessing a reduction in its volume in a decade's time, warns ICC chairman Greg Barclay.

Also Read: Gambhir on working in IPL despite being an MP: I feed 5,000 people every month from my own pocket Barclay hinted that the "big three" of world cricket -- India, Australia and England -- will be largely unaffected by the adjustments in Test cricket. "Some countries may have to make room and play less Test cricket. Some of the smaller full members will have to accept that they can't play the amount of Test cricket that they wanted to, so we may see a lessening of that - four or five a year - whereas England, Australia and India, I think, will be playing Test cricket as they are now." The ICC chair, however, doesn't see the longer format evolving in women's cricket at a significant pace. "To play Test cricket, you've got to have structures domestically that allow you to play long-form cricket and they don't really exist in any of the countries at the moment, so I can't really see women's Test cricket or long-form cricket evolving at any particular speed at all," he said. "That's not to say that those countries that choose to play Test cricket - Australia and England - who provide that to the women can't do so, but I don't see it as part of the landscape moving forward to any real extent at all." ICC chairman Greg Barclay warns of reduction in volume of Test cricket in future

The cricketing action will continue as England are set to host New Zealand in a two-match Test series at home, starting on June 02. It will be the beginning of a new era in England cricket as there has been a change in leadership in the Test line-up with Ben Stokes taking over from Joe Root whereas Brendon McCullum has been appointed as England's red-ball coach.

Ahead of the first Test between England and New Zealand, at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, London, a report in The Telegraph states that as many as 20,000 tickets have gone unsold over the first four days of the match with just two days left for the series opener's commencement.

The high cost of the tickets is being considered to be the main reason for the match not being a sellout so far. Thus, former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed the high prices of the tickets ahead of the Lord's Test between England and the current World red-ball champions. Rishabh Pant has now become a regular for Team India across formats. While Pant made his name with his IPL heroics and was being seen as the next-big-thing in white-ball formats, the 24-year-old has achieved more success in Test cricket so far at the international level.

In 30 Tests, Pant has 1,920 runs at an average of 40.85 and has scored hundreds in England, Australia and South Africa. Thus, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag -- who also defied odds by doing exceeding well in red-ball format when many deemed him to be fit for the shorter forms of the game -- has made a big statement on Pant.

Sehwag stressed the importance of Test cricket and claimed that Pant won't be known for long if he only excels in white-ball formats but will etch his name in the history books by playing 100, or more, Tests for India.

“If he goes on to play 100+ Tests, his name would be etched in the history books forever. Only 11 (12) Indian cricketers have achieved this feat, and everyone can recall those 11 names,” Sehwag told Sports 18 while speaking about the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper.

“Why does Virat Kohli emphasise so much on playing Tests? He knows that if he plays 100-150 or even 200 Tests, he will be immortalised in the record books,” Sehwag added.

In Indian cricket history, only 12 cricketers have played 100 or more Tests. The list includes Sachin Tendulkar, Dravid, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Kohli and Ishant Sharma.

'His name would be etched in history books if....' Virender Sehwag's big statement on Rishabh Pant

Virender Sehwag had a stellar run for Team India across formats. While his playing style was more suited to the limited-overs, the former Indian opener proved his critics wrong with some stunning performances in the red-ball format. As a result, he ended with 8,586 runs in whites, including two triple tons. In fact, he scored more in Tests after 8,273 runs in his ODI career and, hence, defied the odds.

Despite his fruitful run in whites, Sehwag was dropped from the Test line-up for a year after playing his 52nd match in the format. Before India's famous tour of Australia in 2007-08, he was recalled into the side on then captain Anil Kumble's insistence. While the decision was questioned by many, Sehwag proved Kumble's decision right by scoring big in the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Recently, Sehwag hailed his former skipper Kumble for showing faith in him.

“Suddenly, I realised I was not part of the Test side; it hurt. I would have ended with 10,000+ Test runs had I not been dropped for that period,” Sehwag told Sports 18.

After not being a part of the playing XI for the first two Tests in the India-Australia series Down Under, Sehwag recalled Kumble's words ahead of a practice match before the penultimate Test. “Score a 50 in this match, and you will be picked for the match in Perth.”

As a result of returning with a century in the India-ACT Invitation XI match, Sehwag stormed his way back into the XI for the Perth Test. He gave a good start to the team in both the innings and also claimed two wickets in India's famous 72-run win. However, it was in the fourth and final Test where the ex-Indian opener showed his class and announced his return in style, scoring 63 and a match-saving 151-run knock in the second innings.

“Those 60 runs were the toughest I scored in my life. I was playing to repay the faith Anil Bhai put in me. I did not want anyone to question him for bringing me to Australia. I was focused on the striker’s end; on the other end, I spoke to the umpire, humming my favourite songs. The pressure was gone," Sehwag added.

'I didn't want anyone to question him...' - Virender Sehwag hails Anil Kumble for his Test comeback

Virender Sehwag was a special talent. Making a mark in a batting line-up comprising members of India's golden era, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman was never going to be easy for anyone. However, Sehwag had his own way of approaching the game and played his own way despite many criticism.

While Sehwag excelled in the ODI format, and also struck at 145.38 in 19 T20Is for India, he exceeded expectations with his performances in the purest format of the game. Not having a textbook technique, Sehwag surprised one and all by amassing 8,586 runs in whites, striking at a whopping 82.23 along with 23 tons and 32 fifties.

Recently, speaking to Sports 18, Sehwag opined that while the likes of SRT, Dravid, Ganguly and others scored centuries in 150-200 balls, he reached the milestone lot earlier than them, helping him in creating his own identity. "Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly all would score their centuries playing 150-200 balls. If I scored hundreds at the same rate, no one would remember me. I had to score runs faster than them to create my identity,” said Sehwag, who represented India in 104 Tests and ended with an average of 49.34.

While many batters tend to slow down or play cautiously en route a triple-figure mark, Sehwag continued to play fearless cricket and continued to take on the bowlers by sticking to his approach. In this regard, he added, "I always thought that if I stayed till the end of the day, I should score 250 runs, and in that process, I obviously would have to cross 100, 150, 200 and so on. Newly-appointed England captain Ben Stokes has indicated that pace-bowling stalwarts James Anderson and Stuart Broad will make a quick return to the Test squad for the three-match series at home against New Zealand starting on June 2 at Lord`s. Anderson and Broad were overlooked for England`s tour against West Indies earlier this year as selectors instead opted to provide greater opportunities to the next generation of pace bowlers. England fell to a 1-0 series defeat against West Indies during the series and star batter Joe Root stood down as skipper shortly after the team returned home.

England have since confirmed Rob Key as the new managing director of their men`s team and appointed Stokes as Test captain, with the short-term future of their two leading wicket-takers now looking rosier ahead of a busy summer schedule. Speaking for the first time since his appointment as captain on Tuesday, Stokes said he wants to bring a winning culture back to England and that he plans to have Anderson and Broad by his side this summer. "I want to win games of cricket for England. The best way to do that is picking your best XI and in my opinion if Stuart Broad and James Anderson are fit they are available for selection."ICC quoted Stokes as saying.

Stokes indicated he would have a major say in deciding who would be appointed vice-captain of the Test team but swiftly ruled out Root as an option to take up the key role as deputy."I want selfless cricketers who make decisions based on winning the game of cricket for England. At the end of the day the most important thing is winning. I want to be part of a team that has that real mentality, that doesn`t take a backwards step," Stokes added.

England's new Test captain Ben Stokes keen for James Anderson, Stuart Broad to make swift comeback

Gary Kirsten is currently serving as the batting coach of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2022. However, he is set to take over as England's Test team's coach as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is looking for a total revamp. ECB's new managing director Rob Key and Kirsten's talk have reached the advanced stage and an announcement is likely to follow suit in the next couple of weeks as the interview rounds for red-ball and white-ball coaching roles will kick off on May 9.

According to the Daily Mail, Kirsten is willing to part ways with the GT franchise post the ongoing IPL season in India. However, with England set to host New Zealand in a Test series -- starting from June 02 -- and Gujarat being a strong contender to enter the IPL playoffs, the former South African opener won't get much time for a smooth transition into his new role. If Gujarat reach the final, to be held on May 29, it will give very less time for Kirsten to interact with the England Test squad.

While Kirsten looks set to take over as England's red-ball coach, Simon Katich, and Ottis Gibson are also two known names who are in contention for either red or white-ball coaching roles. Thus, nothing is absolutely final as yet. Talking about Kirsten, he certainly has an edge as he has led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title as their head coach and also guided South Africa to the No. 1 Test rankings in his coaching career.

On the other hand, ECB is set to appoint all-rounder Ben Stokes as the next England Test captain. Stokes has served as former captain Joe Root's deputy for long. His record in whites is also phenomenal, with 5,061 runs and 174 scalps in the purest format. Thus, he is a strong contender to succeed Root, who resigned as the Test captain recently after England's disastrous run in Ashes 2021/22 and the West Indies tour early this year. On Monday (April 4), the Dean Elgar-led South Africa demolished Bangladesh on Day 5 of the first Test to win the series opener by 220 runs in Durban. The fifth day resumed with Bangladesh 11 for 3 in pursuit of a challenging 274-run target.

Nonetheless, the hosts didn't take more than an hour to wrap up the proceedings by claiming the last seven wickets in a flash. From 11/3, the visitors soon slipped to 33 for 7 before they were finally bundled out for a paltry 53 in 19 overs. In the final innings, spinners Keshav Maharaj's 7 for 32 and Simon Harmer's 3 for 21 demolished the Asian side without dropping much sweat. This became the lowest-ever Test score by a team in Kingsmead, Durban whereas Bangladesh also registered their second-lowest Test score.

Earlier, South Africa achieved a handy 69-run lead after being dismissed for 367 in the first innings, after being asked to bat first. Being dismissed for 204 in their second essay, Proteas setup a 274-run target for Bangladesh as the match was expected to be an intense affair. Nonetheless, the Bangla Tigers were blown away by the SA spinners on Day 5.

At the post-match presentation, victorious captain Dean Elgar said, "Pretty special, it's not often we've had a Test go into five days. Hard graft, playing conditions that we are not pretty much used to. We had to apply ourselves pretty well, execute our skills which was a challenge for our young-ish bowling unit. A hard-fought Test win. We started well this time which is a massive positive for us. Conditions played a factor with regard to our team selection. We were able to select two experienced spinners. Seamers still applied themselves. Lot of learning curves for a lot of guys. Team management have worked really hard, it's a massive squad effort."

Meanwhile, Bangladesh skipper Mominum Haque said, "We tried to play according to the merit of the ball. We wanted to play till the final session. Unfortunately we lost three wickets last night, that was crucial. We are used to playing spin. We also know that Durban spins from 3rd-4th day, we didn't capitalise well with the bat. We played a lot of loose shots. First innings, we did well. The bowlers bowled really well in both innings. In the last couple of Test matches, our pace bowling department has been doing well ... in NZ and also in the ODI series here. We conceded 50-60 runs extra in the second innings. We have one more match, we have to come back strongly. We'll try to capitalise on our opportunities."

Bangladesh had begun the day on 98 for four and quickly lost nightwatchman Taskin Ahmed (1) as he became the first test wicket on debut for home seamer Lizaad Williams (3-54), caught at the second attempt at slip by Wiaan Mulder.

But Mahmudul and Litton Das (41) put on 82 for the sixth wicket as South Africa missed chances in the field, before the latter was bowled by Williams.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz (29) was involved in another partnership of 51 for the eighth wicket as the visitors frustrated their hosts, but the innings was ended when Mahmudul edged the impressive Williams to Simon Harmer at slip as he tried to up the scoring rate.

Cummins' 5 for 56 and Mitchell Starc's 4 for 36 propelled the Aussies on the top as they will now be desperate to create history and clinch the series 1-0.

WATCH: David Warner, Shaheen Afridi conclude Day 3 of Lahore Test with a hilarious face-off

Pakistan and Australia head into a winner-take-all third and final test from Monday as test cricket returns to Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium for the first time since the 2009 attack by gunmen on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team.

Top teams have largely shunned Pakistan since the attack that killed six policemen and two civilians with Australia visiting the country for the first time in 24 years.

The test will also be a first for Pakistan captain Babar Azam in his home city.

"It's a different feeling to play in front of a home crowd, at my home ground. I can't explain this feeling," Babar told reporters on Sunday, adding that it will be a proud moment for the country and his team if they can win the series.

While Australia named an unchanged side from the one that failed to clinch a win in Karachi, Pakistan will take a call after taking a final look at the wicket.

Babar's epic 196 and Mohammad Rizwan's gallant century helped the hosts snatch draw from the jaws of defeat in the second test in Karachi after the opening match also ended in a stalemate in Rawalpindi.

"We took a lot of confidence from the way the team played the last test," Babar said.

"We will take that confidence into the final test and we will be playing to win, that will be our mindset."

With batters dominating the series so far, the Pakistan Cricket Board hired Toby Lumsden, the former curator of the International Cricket Council academy, to oversee the preparations of the pitch for Lahore.

Both Babar and his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins said they did not expect the Gaddafi Stadium pitch to be much different from the first two tests.

"There's not a lot of grass on it," Cummins said. "I think it's had quite a lot of traffic throughout the PSL (Pakistan Super League) on it as well.

"It seems hard, but I can't see it being too much different from the other ones."

Pakistan vs Australia: Both teams look for series win as Test cricket returns to Lahore

Joe Root has been England's run-machine in Tests for quite some time. While he was in superb form in 2021, he has brought his flawless batting form into the new year as well. While the England Test captain ended with the first Test versus hosts West Indies with a gritty 109, in the drawn series opener at Antigua, Root slammed a phenomenal 153 in the ongoing second Test versus Kraigg Brathwaite-led Windies.

While Root went to stumps on the opening day at 119, on Wednesday (March 16) he eventually fell for 153 -- studded with 14 fours. After his knock, the 31-year-old set an all-time English record. Root went past his predecessor Alastair Cook (11) for the most 150+ scores by an English player (12) in the history of Test cricket. In addition, Root has consolidated his tally at the top with the most 150-plus scores among active players. He has, thus, extended his lead over India's former skipper Virat Kohli (10) with most scores in excess of 150 in whites (12) among active batters.

It is to be noted that Root has 7 150-plus scores in the purest format as a Test captain. In the all-time list, only Kohli (9) and Sir Don Bradman (8) are above the current English captain (who is joint third-most along with Michael Clarke, Mahela Jayawardene, Brian Lara and Graeme Smith).

For the unversed, Root's exceptional form sees him as the top run-getter in the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). He has so far amassed 1,161 runs in 11 matches with five hundreds and four half-centuries. Babar Azam occupies the second spot, being 601 runs behind Root (560).

Talking about the second Test between England and West Indies, at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, the hosts are 71-1 at stumps on Day 2 after Root and Ben Stokes' centuries propelled the visitors to 507-9 decl. (150.5 overs).

R Ashwin ended the India-Sri Lanka Test series with 12 wickets. With this, the 35-year-old wily-spinner's Test wicket-tally now reads 442, being the eighth-highest overall. Among Indians, he surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket-tally (434) and became the second-highest, only after former captain and coach Anil Kumble.

For the unversed, Kumble's tally is 619. He, thus, has a sizeable lead over Ashwin but Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels the off-spinner has it in him to break Kumble's tally. In a recent interaction, the former Indian opener explained why he feels Ashwin can do the unthinkable and go past Kumble's magical number.

"It's still a fair distance to go, we are talking about another 160 wickets. But he is capable of doing that because he just keeps getting better. He doesn't rest on his laurels," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Gavaskar further also highlighted how speedster Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin are exactly the same. "Jasprit Bumrah, who got into Test cricket after Ashwin, is exactly like Ashwin in the sense that he is always looking to add to his repertoire. That is what Ashwin does. At a time a year and year-and-half-ago, Ashwin was tyring leg-spin because you can as variety ball bowl that, especially if you have got 500 runs in the bank," he pointed out said.
