Former India captain and BCCI boss Sourav Ganguly has backed star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya to make a Test comeback. The newly-appointed interim T20I captain Hardik last played a Test match five years back in 2018 and since then has remained out of contention owing to fitness issues related to back and struggling form. Although Hardik was rumoured to return to the Test setup for the 2023 World Test Championship final earlier, he quashed such talks saying he isn’t ready for the longer format.

Speaking with Times of India (TOI) recently, Ganguly - Delhi Capitals’ serving Director of Cricket, said he still believes Hardik is an asset in Tests, and for his own legacy, he must return. Calling Hardik a special cricketer, Dada, as most fans call Ganguly, said,

“There will be specialists in T20s. There’s Hardik Pandya although I still feel he is an asset in Test cricket also and he should come back to Test cricket because that’s what he will be remembered for. He is a specialist in ODIs and T20Is. But he is a very special cricketer,” Ganguly told TOI.

Further backing the Gujarat Titans captain to make it big in the leadership role for India moving forward, Ganguly said the results in the IPL cannot be ignored as it is a tough competition.

"IPL is a good breeding ground. We have seen how well Hardik Pandya has captained in the IPL. That’s one of the reasons he has been captaining India in the shorter formats also. You can’t ignore wins and losses in the IPL because it’s a very tough tournament," Ganguly added.

Meanwhile, sharing his thoughts on money influencing players to pick formats, Ganguly said although he is happy that money has started to flow in sports, he still doesn’t believe that it plays a role for any player to decide which format to play. Ganguly added for every player it’s a dream to play all three formats, and that he is happy to see how hungrier the young guys are.

“I think money has nothing to do with how players play. It’s great that money has come into the sport and that’s how it should be. But I believe the majority of the players want to play all formats as long as they are good. It’s terrific to see how hungry these boys are,” Ganguly added.

As the IPL 2023 is about to begin, Ganguly’s Delhi side will open their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1st.

Ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly backs star India all-rounder to make a Test comeback, calls him an asset

Hardik Pandya has been in sensational form of late. Over the past one year, the all-rounder has made rapid strides in white-ball formats and remains one of the key players for India in the shorter formats. Since his comeback post a back injury, which kept him out of action after the 2021 T20 World Cup, Hardik has been part of India's white-ball setup but is yet to play a Test for Team India since mid-2018. His last Test appearance came during Virat Kohli-led India's five-match Test series versus hosts England.

Ahead of the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, which kicks off on March 31 in Ahmedabad, former Indian captain and Delhi Capitals' (DC) Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly opined on Hardik. He lavished praise on the Gujarat Titans (GT) captain but wants him to return to Test cricket.

Hardik has so far played only 11 Tests for Team India despite making his international debut in early 2016. The 29-year-old all-rounder recently opined on his possible Test return when a reporter asked him if he will be part of India's forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final in early June, where they will face Australia at The Oval, London.

To this, Hardik said, "No. I am an ethically very strong person. I haven’t done 10 per cent to reach there. I am not even a part of 1 per cent. So me coming there and taking someone’s place will ethically not go well." He added, "If I want to play Test cricket, I’ll go through the grind and earn my spot. 'Hardik Pandya should....': Sourav Ganguly shares advice for 'a very special cricketer'

India entered the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final early this month and are set to face Australia in the title clash, set to be held at The Oval, London on June 07. Ever since India qualified for the summit clash, many felt the team management might include star all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the marquee clash with an ICC trophy at stake.

Hardik has not played a Test since India's tour of England in 2018, where he picked a five-fer. He has done reasonably well in the 11 Tests and even has a hundred to his name. Nonetheless, due to his back issues, Hardik hasn't been risked by the Indian team management in all formats and only features in white-ball cricket of late.

When he was asked if he will return in the Test arena for the WTC final, Hardik told reporters ahead of the India-Australia ODIs, "No. I am ethically very strong person. I haven’t done 10% to reach there. I am not even a part of 1%. So me coming there and taking someone’s place will ethically not go well. If I want to play Test cricket, I’ll go through the grind and earn my spot. Hence, for that reason I will not be available for the WTC final or future test series until I feel that I have earned my spot."

Now, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has lauded Hardik for his take on a possible Test return during the WTC final. Ashwin hailed the all-rounder and said it is a 'proper statement to the cricket fraternity and to the entire world by Hardik'.

"We have reached the WTC final and many felt that Hardik Pandya must return to the Test side. Of course, those opinions were great since Hardik has done well in England with the limited Tests he has played there. But Hardik has said that it won't do justice and, 'I will come back when I feel it's the right time to play Test cricket and I haven't even played one percent role in qualifying for the finals'. This is a proper statement to the cricket fraternity and to the entire world by Hardik Pandya," Ashwin said on his Youtube channel.

He added, "We often tend to blame others for our failures. We believe in superstitions or find other reasons because at the end of the day we are disappointed. But Hardik has accepted that he isn't eligible to play Test at the moment. That is a big statement coming from a player- like him. Hats off to Hardik Pandya."

“Why am I hyping this so much about Hardik? Well, because he led us in Rohit Sharma's absence in the first ODI against Australia. Many has praised saying that he doesn't back down from a challenge. Australia were on course for a huge total. But Hardik played a role in bringing back Siraj and Shami even after the spinners took two wickets because he felt there was something in the wicket for the pacers. To get a team all out for 188 from 155 for three is phenomenal achievement by India,” Ashwin concluded.

Hardik has played 11 Tests, scoring 532 runs -- with a hundred and four fifties -- along with claiming 17 wickets.

The New Zealand-Sri Lanka first Test, at Christchurch, was on a knife-edge at stumps on Day 4 on Sunday (March 12). The Tim Southee-led hosts were 28 for 1 in pursuit of 285 after Angelo Mathews' stunning ton propelled the Lankans to set up a challenging target. On Day 5, on Monday (March 13), New Zealand rode on former skipper Kane Williamson's 121* and Darly Mitchell's blitz (81 off 86 balls) to end Sri Lanka's hopes of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. The Islanders had to whitewash the Kiwis in the two-match Test series but with defeat in the series opener, they are out of WTC final race with Team India joining Australia in the finale.

Day 5 started with a rain delay. After the weather was clear, the Black Caps were set to face a minimum of 53 overs, requiring another 257 for a stunning win. NZ lost opener Tom Latham. Henry Nicholls played with positive intent but departed for a 24-ball 20. It gave a sneak peek into the hosts' mindset as they were going after the target. After Nicholls' fall, Mitchell -- whose century propelled the Black Caps to a slender 18-run lead -- came out all guns blazing. He upped the ante and brought some urgency to the chase while Williamson held his end as well. Although the former captain looked rusty, he didn't get bogged down to concede his wicket.

Amid regular fall of wickets and some tight bowling, Williamson's 27th Test ton still managed to guide the home side to a famous two-wicket win on the last ball of the contest.

With one needed off the final delivery, Asitha Fernando bowled on the middle and leg stump as Williamson tried to hook but could not connect. Williamson and Neil Wagner ran to steal a run as the wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella missed hitting the stumps at the striker's end. As a result of Mitchell's 102 and Matt Henry's 72, the hosts gained a vital lead and managed 373. Later, Mathews' 115 took SL to 302 all-out; setting up a tricky 285-run target. WTC 2023 Points Table: On Friday (March 03), Australia thrashed India by nine wickets to win the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy to keep the series alive at 2-1. Moreover, Australia also qualified for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be held at The Oval, London in early June, with their famous triumph on a turning track at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Resuming Day 3, Australia started their run-chase, where they needed 76 for a win, and lost Usman Khawaja in the first over. Nonetheless, Travis Head's 49* and Marnus Labuschagne's 28 not out led the Steve Smith-led Aussies to victory, and through to the final of the second cycle of the WTC. The damage was done for India after they only managed 109, opting to bat first on Day 1 on Wednesday (March 01), before conceding a vital 88-run lead to the visitors -- who were all-out for 197 -- on a tough batting pitch tough. In their second essay, Rohit Sharma & Co. fell flat once again with Nathan Lyon taking 8 for 64 (ending with an 11-wicket haul in the match). Being all-out for 163, India gave a paltry 76-run target which the Aussies chased down in style during the first session of Day 3. With this win, Australia have become the first side to enter the WTC final. India have to wait for the final Test, in Ahmedabad and need a win to not depend on other results and meet the Aussies in the summit clash. Sri Lanka is the only other team who can play spoilsport for India and reach the final if they whitewash hosts New Zealand in their forthcoming two-match series. When you are playing on challenging pitches, we need to be brave. We allowed their bowlers to bowl on one particular spot. Not taking any credit away from their bowlers. especially Nathan Lyon, he kept challenging us hitting the right lengths. When the bowler is trying to do that, gotta be a little brave which I thought we were not. Things happen like that, but we can take a lot of credit about how we batted in the first 2 games." On the way forward, he opined, "Its all about everyone coming together and chipping in. We want few guys stand up and put their hand up to take the team through. You will falter in your plans and that's what happened in this game, we didn't adapt as well as we would have liked to." The fourth and final Test begins in Ahmedabad on March 09.

WTC points table 2023 ICC World Test Championship ranking after Australia beat India in Indore

India had a forgettable day in the park when they locked horns with Australia in the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, on Wednesday (March 01). Opting to bat first, India only managed a paltry 109 in 33.2 overs before Australia went to stumps at 156 for 4, with an overall lead of 47. Only six Indian batters crossed the double digits, including tail-ender Umesh Yadav. Umesh, who featured in the playing XI in place of a rested Md Shami, scored an entertaining 13-ball 17, comprising two sixes, and equalled Virat Kohli in an elite batting list.

With two maximums in his inning, Umesh joined Kohli to become the joint 17th highest six-hitter for India in the longest format of the game (24). In addition, he surpassed former head coach Ravi Shastri's tally (22) in the process.

On his landmark Test, Pujara's family was present at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Prior to the Test, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar presented the batter his special cap along with an inspiring speech.

Gavaskar said, "Cheteshwar, when we are playing as kids growing up, whether we are playing at home or down on the streets or in the maidans, we are all dreaming of playing for India and eventually when we do play for India, it's an unbelievable feeling. You want to do that over and over again and to do that you need a lot of hardwork, you need plenty of determination, plenty of self-belief to be able to lift yourself from lean periods and then still focus on getting the job done. When you go out to bat, it looks as if you're not just taking your bat with you, you are taking the Indian flag with you and you put your body on the line for India. You have taken the blows, you have got up and you have made the bowlers earn your wicket."

Pujara has so far amassed 7,021 runs, including 19 hundreds and 34 half-centuries, along with a best of 206*. He will be eager to score a daddy hundred in his special Test and take India to a 2-0 scoreline in the ongoing series versus Pat Cummins-led Australia.

Rohit Sharma created history on Friday (February 10) during Day 2 of the first Test between India and Australia at the VCA Stadium, Nagpur. After India dismissed Pat Cummins-led Australia for 177, riding on Ravindra Jadeja's 5 for 47, they resumed the second day's play with an aim to take a big lead. While wickets fell at regular intervals, Rohit looked at his fluent best and reached a stunning hundred and achieved a big feat.

By slamming his 9th Test ton, Rohit became the first Indian captain -- fourth overall -- to score a hundred in all three formats. In the overall list, he joined the likes of Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan, South Africa's Faf du Plessis and Pakistan's Babar Azam.

IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma becomes 1st Indian skipper to score a ton in all three formats during Nagpur Test

Hardik Pandya has taken over as the T20I captain amid the absence of Rohit Sharma following the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Ever since India lost the semi-finals to eventual winners England, Rohit, Virat Kohli and some other seniors have been sidelined from the shortest format with Hardik leading a young side keeping the 2024 T20 WC in mind. Although Hardik hasn't officially replaced Rohit as the T20I captain, he is touted to be the next white-ball skipper with him recently replacing KL Rahul as the limited-overs vice-captain.

Despite the added responsibility of captaining the side, the 29-year-old Hardik hasn't bogged down as an all-rounder. In India's recent home T20I series win over New Zealand, Hardik ended as the Player-of-the-Series with five scalps and few important cameos with the bat. While he remains a vital cog for India in white-ball formats, Hardik hasn't played a Test since September 2018. His back injury kept him out of action for long and while he has returned in style, there have been no signs of him coming back to the Test setup anytime soon.

Thus, Hardik opened up on his Test future following India's T20I series triumph over the Black Caps in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 01). Speaking to reporters after the third T20I, he said, "I will come (back) when I feel (it's) the right time to play Test-match cricket." He added, "Right now, I'm going to focus on white-ball cricket, which is important, and if time is right and body is fine, I'll give (the long format) a try."

Hardik was last seen in action in whites during India's tour of England in 2018. He has 532 runs along with 17 wickets in the red-ball format. He will next be seen in action for Team India during their three-match ODI series versus Australia right before IPL 2023. For now, Rohit-led India are gearing up for the four-match Test series opener versus the Aussies, in Nagpur, which will get underway on February 09.

'Right now, I'm going to....' - Team India all-rounder Hardik Pandya breaks silence on his Test future

For various reasons, the future of Test cricket looks gloomy for now. The surge in the franchise-based T20 cricket model seem to be the way to go forward as youngsters growing up are more inclined towards result-oriented cricket than the old-school five-day format. David Warner, a veteran of more than 100 Tests is visibly worried about Tests future going ahead. Advising youngsters to choose their priorities carefully, Warner said by playing Tests you stand a chance of leaving a lasting legacy behind.

In the wake of Test cricket’s dying future, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had even introduced the ICC World Test Championship – which is into its second cycle now. While it made contests in the longer format exciting with every team now having something to look forward to, Warne reckons youngsters’ mindset that is inclined towards playing white-ball cricket worries him a bit. Citing an example from his conversation with his BBL franchise teammate, Oliver Davies, Warner said he got a reality check on cricket’s immediate future.

"I was speaking to (Davies) the other day. He likes playing white-ball cricket, I can't see him playing red-ball cricket any time soon," Warner said. "If he wants to put his mind to it, he can definitely play. But I've got a little bit of scaredness about what's going to happen in the next five to 10 years, where cricket is actually heading.”

"I'd love for guys coming through to play red-ball cricket and play test cricket because that's the legacy that you should want to leave behind," the Australian opener added.

Being in the 100-Test-match-club, Warner alongside some other biggies including Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and even Pat Cummins have made conscious efforts to keep this format relevant, and have been vocal about its importance too.

Claiming that without playing Tests it’s harder for anyone to leave a name for themselves, Warner said "There's only been a small minority of people who have been able to do that and have a long career (without Tests). Guys see, the short term at the moment with all the leagues and stuff around. The best way to get value for your currency is actually making a name for yourself."

Meanwhile, the star opener will now be seen in action against India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series starting from February 9th in Nagpur.

David Warner suggests youngsters to set priorities in wake of Test cricket’s dying future

In 2022, as many as seven players led India at different times. Following the end of Virat Kohli's captaincy tenure, Rohit Sharma has taken charge of the Indian team across formats but the likes of KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant have led the side on different occasions due to multiple reasons.

However, R Ashwin -- being one of the senior players -- has still never led India in any format. Debuting in international cricket in 2010, the wily off-spinner has represented India in 88 Tests, 113 ODIs and 65 T20Is, been a part of the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy wins and remains a key member of the red-ball side -- has also featured in last two T20 World Cups despite largely being out of favour in white-ball formats since mid-2017 -- but never captained India. Thus, the 36-year-old opened up on the same during a recent interaction.

On Thursday (January 05), Steve Smith started 2023 with a bang by slamming yet another hundred in the purest format during Day 2 of the third and final Test between Australia and South Africa, at the SCG, Sydney. In the second day's play of the New Year's Test, Smith and Usman Khawaja were going strong and the former completed his 30th Test ton to surpass Sir Don Bradman's tally (29).

Bradman ended his career with a total of 29 Test centuries for the Aussies, in 80 innings of 52 Test matches. Smith, on the other hand, surpassed his tally in his 162nd inning in his 92nd Test. The former Aussie captain is now also the joint-third on the list of leading century-makers for Australia in whites. Former captains Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) lead the list with Smith and former opening batter Matthew Hayden with 30 centuries apiece. Smith will aim to go past Waugh's tally during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in India from next month, and narrow the gap with Ponting.

En route to his special ton at his home ground, Smith also went past both Michael Clarke and Hayden to become the fourth-leading run scorer for Australia in Tests. The 33-year-old is now only behind Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174), and Steve Waugh (10,927), with his tally reading 8,647 following his 104 in the ongoing Test.

On Thursday (December 29), Pat Cummins-led Australia thrashed South Africa by an innings and 182 runs to win the second and penultimate Test at the iconic MCG, Melbourne. Resuming the fourth day's play, SA were 15 for 1 and trailing by 371 more runs. Despite some fight from Temba Bavuma (65) and starts from Theunis de Bruyn and Kyle Verreynne, the Proteas only managed 204 all-out to concede a big win for the hosts.

Everything clicked for the Aussies from the word go. Opting to bowl first, Australia rode on Cameron Green's five-fer to dismiss the visitors for 189 before piling up a mammoth 575 for 8 decl. with David Warner (200) and Alex Carey (111) being the top performers. The South Africans somehow managed to cross the 200-run mark but have lost their fourth Test in a row to fall behind in the race to enter the ICC World Test Championship final. At the post-match presentation, skipper Cummins said, "It (the win) is right up there. We have had some great contests with South Africa, hadn't won against them at home in 20 years I think, so pretty special. I thought how Warner and Smith batted in the heat was pretty gutsy. Starc and Green as well, put their injuries behind and turned up. Davey was superb, you could see his energy from ball one and to do it in his 100th Test is awesome. He (Carey) has really cemented his place in the Test side and to get a hundred in a Boxing Day Test is special. He's (Lyon) good to go, just winded himself. Starc and Green will definitely miss the Sydney Test. Boxing Day is a pretty huge event and this year was even more special as we celebrated Warnie."

Meanwhile, Elgar pointed out, "It is not easy at the moment. That was bit of a hammering. We have got to do lot of reflection going ahead once again. There are a few positives coming out of this Test but not a lot. The inexperience with the bat in hand, we lost a lot of batters in the last few years and that has played a role. But that also gave an opportunity for the newcomers to come out, perform and stake a permanent claim in this batting group. But it is definitely hurting us at the moment."

Australia are nearing qualification for the WTC final with this win. They will aim for a series whitewash, at the SCG, Sydney, before their four Tests in India next year.

Updated ICC World Test Championship points table after Australia beat South Africa at the MCG

On Thursday (December 29), Australia ended South Africa's miseries in the second and penultimate Test, at the MCG, Melbourne, to win by an innings and 182 runs. From the word go, Australia have dominated proceedings and showed no signs of slowing down on the fourth day, when play resumed with SA being 15 for 1 after conceding a whopping 386-run lead.

Theunis de Bruyn, Temba Bavuma (65), and Kyle Verreynne showed some resistance but never threatened the Pat Cummins-led Aussie bowlers as Scott Boland (2 for 49) and Nathan Lyon (3 for 58) accounted for regular breakthroughs whereas the likes of Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Cummins chipped in with a wicket each. The Proteas batters once again fell flat as the team has now lost four successive Tests to dent their chances of reaching the WTC final. Had it not been for their last-wicket partnership, which added 27 runs, it would've been their eighth consecutive innings where South Africa wouldn't have touched the 200-run mark.

Australia got everything right from the coin toss. Opting to bowl first, they rode on IPL 2023 auction's star Cameron Green (5 for 27) to rattle SA for 189. David Warner, playing his 100th Test, scored a majestic 200 (255) whereas Alex Carey's 111 and fifties from Steve Smith (85), Travis Head, and Green took Australia to a mammoth 575-8 decl. Dean Elgar-led SA continued to slip further from thereon and showed no fight whatsoever with the bat.

For the Aussies, they have beaten South Africa at home after 17 years and strengthened their case to reach the final of the ongoing second cycle of the WTC. They will, however, aim to go for the kill and whitewash the series at the SCG, Sydney with the third and final Test commencing on January 04.

Australia thrash South Africa by an innings and 182 runs to win 2nd Test, take unassailable 2-0 lead

David Warner dominated proceedings on Day 2 of the second and penultimate Test between Australia and South Africa at the MCG, Melbourne on Tuesday (December 27). After Australia rode on Cameron Green's five-fer to dismiss SA for a paltry 189 on the opening day, the hosts resumed the day's play at 45 for 1 and rode on Warner-Steve Smith (85)'s 239-run third-wicket stand to dictate terms with the opener returning with a majestic 200. Playing his 100th Test, the swashbuckling opener made the most of the special occasion and has put Australia in the driver's seat as they are now well-placed at 386-3 with an overall lead of 197 runs.

Speaking to the press after the end of the day's play, vice-captain Smith -- who missed out on a well-deserved hundred -- heaped praise on Warner, who retired hurt on 200 after suffering from cramps and has backed the senior pro to keep going in the purest format of the game. It is to be noted that the 36-year-old had been criticised for his poor run of form but the opener silenced his critics in style on Tuesday.

"I don't see why not," Smith said. "He's fit and I don't see any reason why he can't continue playing. "He was certainly seeing the ball pretty well today, so fingers crossed he can keep playing well and he can play for as long as he likes," he added.

Smith also went on to reveal the chats he had with Warner during their marathon partnership at the MCG. "The more he started to cramp the more shots he started to play and everything seemed to be coming out of the middle. It was an amazing knock and nice to be up the other end for a large chunk of it," Smith stated. "I was doing my thing and he was doing his. It was just like, 'Keep batting'. He was like, 'I’m cramping.' I was like, 'Good. Just keep going.'," added the former Aussie captain.

Warner became the first Australian and only the second batter, after England's Joe Root, to slam a double ton in his 100th Test. He also surpassed 17,000 international runs as an opener during his impressive knock versus the Proteas.

'Don't see any reason why he can't': Smith backs Warner to continue in Tests after his MCG heroics vs SA

England Test captain Ben Stokes has hit out at ICC for not paying attention towards the scheduling of the game and survival of Test cricket. Speaking to legendary Sir Ian Botham on BBC, Stokes said cricket scheduling isn’t getting the right attention that it should by quoting an example of England’s ODI series against Australia, which was scheduled right after the T20 World Cup in October this year.

”The scheduling doesn’t get enough attention that it should. A great example is England’s one-day series against Australia after the T20 World Cup. That was shoving three games in there. It made sense to someone to schedule a series which meant nothing,” Stokes told Botham on BBC.

Stokes added with the growth of T20 and franchise cricket, Tests seem to be dying a slow death, and the way it has been spoken about of late is surely upsetting. He continued saying that it is understandable how a lot of different opportunities are there for everyone outside of red-ball cricket but to see Tests not getting prioritised is blowing his mind away.

”Test cricket has been spoken about in a way I don’t like. It is losing the attention of the fans with all the new formats and franchise competitions. We understand there are so many opportunities for players away from Test cricket. But for me it is so important for the game,” Stokes added.

Since Stokes took over the reins from Joe Root in Tests and with the addition of Brendon McCullum as the head coach, England seemed to have revamped the way the five-day format is now played or will be played in future. Introduction of ‘Bazball’ cricket has taken the cricket world by storm. Backing this attacking and result-oriented brand of cricket, Stokes said teams must now look to play for a result – that to him could work well in prolonging this format.

”Taking the result away from the mindset is a great starting point. Putting focus on making every day entertaining. Not allowing people to know what is going to happen. If people turn up excited about what they are going to watch you’ve already won before a ball has been bowled,” Ben Stokes opined.

Stokes, under whom England recently thrashed Pakistan 3-0 in an away series, said he loves playing Test cricket and believes the top-board must do something different to popularise Tests among fans, who are more attracted towards the shortest format.

”I love playing Test cricket and felt we could do something different,” added Stokes.

Ben Stokes blames ICC for not paying enough attention to scheduling, urges top-body to popularise Tests

England completed a historic Test series whitewash over hosts Pakistan on Tuesday (December 20). Resuming Day 4 needing just 55 more to chase down a paltry 167, with eight wickets in hand, opener Ben Duckett (82 not out) and Ben Stokes' 35 not out took England to a convincing win. In addition, this became the first time that hosts Pakistan were whitewashed in whites at home.

Talking about the third and final Test, England already had an unassailable 2-0 lead. Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first at their happy hunting ground; i.e. the National Stadium, Karachi. Riding on captain Babar Azam's 78 and Agha Salman's 56, Pakistan only managed 304. In reply, Harry Brooks scored yet another century in the series -- his third overall -- whereas fifties from Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes took England to 354 all-out, grabbing a vital 50-run lead.

In the third innings, Pakistan once again fell flat with many of their batters getting starts but none managing to stay for long. Babar (54), Saud Shakeel (53) were the top scorers but Jack Leach (ending with a seven-fer in the match) and debutant Rehan Ahmed (returning with a five-fer in only his second innings) rattled the hosts for 216 before England chased down 167 on the penultimate day's morning session.

At the post-match presentation, England captain Stokes said, "Perfect (sums up the Test series). We got a process in which we want to play, the challenge is to play on different kinds of pitches and we stuck to our gameplan and adapted really well with bat and ball. Everyone delivered. Lot spoken about the way we bat, but our bowling stood up as well. It comes down to belief. The belief we have on the team in what we were trying to do and it resonates around everybody, it's unbelievable and to be able to lead the group full of confidence, it's amazing. Every person stood up at some point and put on some kind of match winning performance."

Pakistan are out of the race for a spot in the WTC final whereas England -- eliminated much before -- ended their run in the second cycle with a historic Test series triumph on Pakistani soil. This was their first Test series in Pakistan since 2005.

Rishabh Pant missed the entire ODI series between India and Bangladesh after consultation with the BCCI medical team. While he has returned for the two-match Test series and was drafted into the playing XI after India opted to bat first on Day 1 of the Chattogram Test, Pant slammed a well-made 46-run-knock. Coming out to bat at No. 5 with India struggling at 48 for 3, Pant resurrected the Indian innings with a 64-run fourth-wicket stand with Cheteshwar Pujara (90) before falling for 46 after the lunch break. Though his stay wasn't a lengthy one, he achieved a new record.

With his second six, Pant became the second-fastest Indian to reach 50 sixes in the purest format of the game. Pant (54th inning) is only behind Rohit Sharma (51 innings). Overall, the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter stands third in the all-time list of fastest to 50 Test sixes. Pakistan's Shahid Afridi continues to lead the list as he reached the feat in 46 innings. Among Indians, Pant is the eighth batter to 50 maximums in whites. He has joined some big names such as Rohit, Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly and Ravindra Jadeja.

In addition, Pant touched the 4000-run mark in international cricket during his knock on Day 1 of the India-Bangladesh Chattogram Test on Wednesday (December 14).

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the series-opening test against South Africa starting on Saturday as he continues to recover from a side strain, but captain Pat Cummins is likely to return from a quadricep injury.

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the series-opening test against South Africa starting on Saturday as he continues to recover from a side strain, but captain Pat Cummins is likely to return from a quadricep injury. Both the quicks missed the second test against West Indies, which Australia won by 419 runs at Adelaide Oval on Sunday to sweep the two-match series 2-0. Selectors omitted Hazlewood from a 14-man squad named on Monday for the Gabba Test against the Proteas while adding uncapped Western Australia seamer Lance Morris as injury cover. In the absence of Hazlewood and Cummins, Michael Neser and Scott Boland took eight wickets between them in Adelaide, where Steve Smith captained the side. “Michael bowled superbly in Adelaide, as did Scott,” said Bailey. “We were impressed as always with their performances that backed up what they have achieved in the past.” Australia squad Pat Cummins (capt), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Lance Morris, Michael Neser, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

After losing the first Test versus England, Babar Azam-led Pakistan locked horns with the visitors on Day 1 of the second and penultimate match in Multan on Friday (December 09). Pakistan handed a Test cap to Abrar Ahmed and the right-arm leg-break bowler accounted for seven for 114 to make a solid impression at the international level. With this, the 24-year-old became only the third Pakistani bowler to claim as many wickets on debut innings after Mohammad Zahid and Mohammad Nazir.

After England opted to bat first, they were scoring at a brisk rate once again but kept losing at regular intervals. Courtesy of fifties from Ben Duckett (63) and Ollie Pope (60), and vital contributions from captain Ben Stokes, Will Jack and Mark Wood, England posted 281 all-out in 51.4 overs but the star of the innings was debutant Abrar. He dismissed the top seven to make a memorable start. Here's all you need to know about him:

An upcoming spinner who didn't know legend Abdul Qadir? Yes, you heard that right!

Mushtaq Ahmed, head coach of Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy in Lahore in 2017, asked Abrar about Pakistan's legendary spinner Abdul Qadir. To his surprise, the youngster hadn't even heard his name. "Ye kaun hai, kabhi naam nahi suna (Who is he, never heard his name)," said Abrar. “Everyone started laughing and Mushtaq bhai told him ‘you’ve registered yourself as a leg-spinner and you don’t know about the greatest we ever produced,’” Sajid Ahmed, Abrar's brother, told The Indian Express.

Impressing from the early days

Abrar is the youngest of eight siblings. He was close to his mother and the brightest among all siblings. In his early days, he used to play tape-ball cricket when one day he suddenly heard about a cricket trial at Rashid Latif’s academy and decided to show up. Muhammad Masroor, then Pakistan’s U-19 coach, was supervising the trials and got mighty impressed by what he saw of young Abrar.

'Fingers like iron rods'

Masroor recalled about Abrar's variations and said, "He was bowling all variations with the same grip). He doesn’t have that massive turn. He was bowling on the stumps, and no one was able to read his lengths. I immediately asked him whether he had ever played with the hard ball. The answer was ‘no’. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Out of curiosity, I checked his fingers, and those were like iron rods."

Rapid strides

In 2016, the 24-year-old spinner Abrar bagged as many as 53 wickets in Zonal U-19 in Karachi. Soon, Masroor passed on his videos to Rashid Latif, the then Karachi Kings' director of cricket. As a result, he was one of the emerging picks of the franchise in the PSL 2017.

After his first stint in the PSL, things turned upside down for Abrar as he suffered a stage-five stress fracture. Hence, he was kept out of action for quite long (two years). After being constantly motivated by his father, he returned to the scene in early 2020 while representing Sindh’s second XI. In the Quaid-e-Azam Second XI tournament in the Covid-hit year, Abrar accounted for a whopping 57 wickets at 11.75.

In the 2022-23 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Abrar returned with 43 wickets, averaging 21.95. Such was his consistency that he took five five-wicket hauls in seven matches, helping his cause to earn a Test call-up versus England.

Pak vs Eng, 2nd Test: Who is Abrar Ahmed? Debutant who claimed seven wickets to rattle Stokes & Co.

England impressed one and all with their bazball method in the entire Rawalpindi Test to beat Pakistan by 74 runs on Day 5 of the three-match series opener on Monday (December 05). Opting to bat first on an unimpressive track, with nothing for bowlers, England rode on four centuries -- from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brooks -- to post 657 all-out in 101 overs.

In reply, Pakistan made 579 all-out with centuries from Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique and captain Babar Azam. With a 78-run lead, England batters once again impressed and went all-out in their approach to post 264-7 in 35.5 overs, at over seven runs per over, to set up a challenging 343-run target. On Day 5, Pakistan were 259-5 but got dismissed for 268. Post the Test match, many have hailed Ben Stokes & Co. for their bazball method which lit up the Test, played on a dead wicket.

Nonetheless, ex-English cricketer David Lloyd feels that England's approach isn't new. He recalled the great teams such as West Indies and Australia which were aggressive and never played for a draw. Lloyd further mentioned that only India can play a similar brand of cricket in whites, despite their batters being obsessed with numbers, due to Virat Kohli. "It is not totally new, of course. The Australian team of the 90s were very positive and the great West Indian sides were full of exhilarating stroke-makers. I reckon a team capable of this style now is India. They have all the tools. There has been a suspicion that Indian batters are stats driven but Virat Kohli is one who could drive this," wrote Lloyd in the Daily Mail.

It is to be noted that Kohli remains India's greatest Test captain ever. He led India from 2015 to 2022 and infused a competitive and attacking mindset where the team didn't only rely on spinners but formed a lethal pace-bowling attack and went for results rather than settling for draws. Under Kohli, India beat Australia in the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, had an unassailable 2-1 lead over hosts England in the 2021 series (which ended in a 2-2 stalemate with Jasprit Bumrah leading in the final match), were highly competitive versus South Africa in their own den in 2018 and 2022 tours and remained a dominant force at home.

India also played the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final under Kohli's leadership and remained No. 1 ranked side in the format for a long time. At present, Rohit is India's full-time captain after Kohli's resignation early this year.

At the post-match presentation, Stokes said, "We wanted to come here to Pakistan and carry on with our mantra of exciting cricket. I've got no interest in trying to play for a draw, the dressing room has no interest in playing for a draw. Felt on this kind of wicket, almost had to entice the batsmen to play an attacking shot. Today we were fortunate to get the ball reverse-swinging. James Anderson and Ollie Robinson were fantastic today. We won probably about 8 minutes before we would've come off. This is probably up there as one of England's greatest away wins."

Meanwhile, Babar stated, "We were not upto the mark. Had a golden chance in the second innings, but session by session we lost wickets. Our bowling group is young. Unfortunately Haris injured himself in the first innings. All credit to the bowlers who bowled well and tried without Haris. We try to stick to our plans. Difficult when opponent goes at 7 an over. We had an opportunity in the second innings. But we didn't get partnerships in the end."

On the final day, Pakistan were 259 for 5 are seemed like cruising towards the total before James Anderson-Ollie Robinson's four wickets each and Jack Leach chipped in with the last wicket to take their side home; dismissing Pakistan for 268. With this defeat, Pakistan have dented their chances of qualifying for the second ICC World Test Championship final.

Here's how Pakistan's loss is India's gain

Babar & Co. aren't out of contention yet. They are placed fifth in the table, however, wins for Australia or India in their respective upcoming Test series will end Pakistan's chances of entering the final.

On the other hand, if Rohit Sharma's India clean sweep Bangladesh, they can now afford to lose at least one of their upcoming four Tests versus Pat Cummins-led Australia at home, early next year, in a bid to qualify. For Australia, if they whitewash West Indies on home soil and beat South Africa in two out of the upcoming three Tests, Down Under, they would also make it to the summit clash.

After the loss, Babar said at the post-match presentation, "We were not upto the mark. But we didn't get partnerships in the end. Lot of positives. Our batting performed very well. Bowling also very well."

Pakistan will also host New Zealand after the England series. However, they have spoiled their chances of going ahead with a loss in the England series opener.

In a run-feast in Rawalpindi, England beat Pakistan by 74 runs to win the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. On Day 5, all three results were possible but Ben Stokes & Co.

EXPLAINED: How Pakistan's 74-run loss vs England is a gain for India with WTC final ticket at stake

England and Pakistan were involved in a high-scoring Rawalpindi Test, which made heads turn for its poor surface on offer. Ben Stokes & Co., who had over a majority of players down with a stomach bug prior to the game's commencement, beat Babar Azam-led Pakistan by 74 runs to earn a memorable win in Asian conditions and go 1-0 up in the three-match series on Pakistani soil.

Opting to bat first, Stokes-led Three Lions didn't put a foot wrong as they rode on centuries from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brooks to post a mammoth 657 all-out in their first essay. In reply, Pakistan also made merry of the placid pitch and rode on centuries from Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique and captain Babar to be dismissed for 579; conceding a vital 78-run lead to the visitors.

England's bazball approach continued in their second innings as they scored at over 7 RPO to declare at 264-7; setting a challenging 343-run target for the hosts in the last four sessions. On Day 5, all three results were possible and it seemed like Pakistan's middle-order would take them towards the target before James Anderson and Ollie Robinson's four-fers each took their side to a fitting 74-run win. At the post-match presentation, Stokes said, "Some of the things we can't plan for is what happened to the squad before the Test. Seems a long time ago when we were running around to find players for the Test. Will Jacks getting the message three minutes before toss, and Pope getting the gloves. We've played 8-9 matches with myself and Brendon in charge. One thing we try to do is focus on ourselves and not the opposition. We know we're a very exciting team. Was a great batting surface, so it was an opportunity for our batting group. Having the lads truck in like they did today was amazing. Really special group of players. We wanted to come here to Pakistan and carry on with our mantra of exciting cricket.

The second and penultimate Test begins on December 09 in Multan.

Cheteshwar Pujara has been an integral part of India's Test line-up ever since he made his debut. While Pujara was initially labelled as a home bully, he has played some memorable knocks in tough overseas conditions for Team India.

Pujara's Southampton ton during the 2018 England tour, 521-run tally in the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, 153 in Johannesburg Test in 2013 and many more such knocks have made him an indispensable part of the red-ball squad. Though he was dropped for the Sri Lanka home series early this year, his zeal to bounce back saw him return for the one-off Test versus England in July, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, after a splendid County Championship for Sussex. While he has scored over 600 runs in the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup for Sussex, Pujara took some time out to have a Q/A session with his fans on Twitter on Wednesday (August 24).

During the interaction, Pujara replied to a cricket-based website when asked about his favourite overseas triumph. The right-hander chose the famous Gabba Test win in this regard.

However, the Gabba Test win truly remains special which came versus the mighty Aussies in the 2021/22 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Talking about the Gabba Test, a second-stringed Ajinkya Rahane-led India came into the four-match Test series finale versus Tim Paine & Co. with the scoreline reading 1-1. After conceding a vital 33-run lead to the home side, India chased down a competitive 328 on the final day riding on Shubman Gill's classy 91, Pujara's gutsy 56 and Rishabh Pant's 89 not out to clinch the series 2-1.
