Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series opener by four runs at the&nbsp;Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on Thursday (August 04). In&nbsp;the first game, debutant Tilak Verma impressed one and all and top-scored for India (39) but the visitors failed to chase a moderate 150 and were restricted for 145 for 9. India were on course to chase down the score and were well-placed at 67 for 2 before Verma's dismissal turned the tide&nbsp;in West Indies' favour. Eventually, Jason Holder's 2 for 19 starred in his side's narrow win.

During India's run-chase, they tried Sanju Samson at No. 6. The swashbuckling right-hander mostly bats higher up the order, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and also in the limited ODIs he has featured in, but was given the task to finish the innings in the first T20I. As the pitch got slower, Samson took some time to get going and stitched a vital 36-run fifth-wicket stand with captain Hardik before the duo fell in&nbsp;the final five overs, to bring West Indies on top.

Samson ended with a run-a-ball 12. After the T20I series opener, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa - part of the MS Dhoni-led India's victorious run in the T20 World Cup in 2007 -- stated that Samson should be given a longer rope at the No. 6 spot ahead of next year's T20 World Cup, to be held in West Indies and USA.

<h2>'The more Samson plays....'</h2>

"I am hopeful considering the team management has decided to play Sanju Samson at No. 6 in T20I cricket, then it's important he gets a longer rope. If you are going to go into the World Cup with Sanju Samson playing a finisher's role, then it's important he understands the position well. The more he plays in that position, he would be able to understand it better," Robin Uthappa told JioCinema.

Uthappa added, "When Sanju Samson plays for the Rajasthan Royals, there also he can play half the season at the top order and the remaining half at No. 6. so that he can build familiarity. When he plays for India, it's not a given that he would get the No. 3 spot. Suryakumar Yadav might take the spot or Virat Kohli might play at No. 3. So he needs to be prepared for both positions."

Samson will like to come up with significant contributions in the remaining four T20Is and help Hardik &amp; Co. win the series. He scored an impressive 41-ball 51 in the third and final ODI and, hence, has form on his side to turn the tides in the upcoming games.&nbsp;

IND vs WI: Hope Sanju Samson gets long run at No. 6 ahead of T20 World Cup 2024, says Robin Uthappa

India beat West Indies, 2-1, in the recently-held three-match ODI series in the Caribbean island. While Rohit Sharma-led visitors won the series opener by five wickets, they lost the second and penultimate tie -- by six wickets -- before winning the decider by 200 runs. What made heads turn during the three ODIs was India's team combination as the Rahul Dravid-led team management rested Rohit and Kohli for the final two matches whereas the fringed players' usage was also questioned.

From the second ODI, Ishan Kishan opened the innings along with Shubman Gill. While Ishan ended the series with scores of 52, 55 and 77, it is to be noted that he played as an opener. Given Rohit and Gill are certain at the top, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will take the middle-order slots once deemed fit before the ODI World Cup. Thus, if Ishan makes the cut for the 50-over showpiece event, to be held in India later this year, he will most likely be slotted at the lower-order. Hence, many raised eyebrows as India used him as an opener throughout the WI ODIs.

The former cricketers and experts were baffled with how India utilised the likes of Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the series whereas many slammed them for overlooking Yuzvendra Chahal. Now, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has lashed out at Team India for the way they have used some players in the recent ODIs.

<h2>'One guy being dropped after scoring 200... what's the point?'</h2>

Butt said on his official YouTube channel, "I absolutely agree (that India's experiment with Ishan was confusing). One guy being dropped after scoring 200... what's the point? Either they accept the fact that he is second option, even if he scores 1000 runs in a single innings. That never gives you the feeling of being the best, that never gives you the feeling that you will be rewarded for your performances. Currently, the feeling is no matter what you do, you will be the second option."

He further added, “He is not a bench strength level anymore. He's more than that. Secondly, I accept that Rohit is a big player, but some players are there who have been around for a long time but when pressure gets to them, they can't deliver. Especially at the knock-out stages, this is something that has to be worked on."

At present, India is involved in the five T20Is versus West Indies in the Caribbean island. Their main focus is now on the forthcoming Asia Cup, which commences late in August, before the ODI World Cup 2023 in India in October-November.

'Even if he scores 1,000 runs in an inning, he is...': Ex-Pak captain slams India for experiments in WI ODIs

India recently won the three-match ODI series versus West Indies, in the Caribbean island, 2-1. Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue won the series opener, by five wickets, but they played a second-stringed side, with Rohit and Virat Kohli being rested, to lose the second and penultimate tie by six wickets. Despite the defeat, and heavy criticism for playing a second-stringed line-up, India again rested Rohit and Kohli and entered the third ODI with the series on the line.

However, the Hardik Pandya-led side came to their best in the finale and posted a mammoth 351/5. In reply, Shai Hope-led West Indies were bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs and lost&nbsp;by 200 runs in Trinidad, on Tuesday (August 01). Despite the series triumph, many critics slammed the Dravid-led Indian team management for not playing their regulars in the three ODIs with the 50-over World Cup only a few months away, to be held in India in October-November.&nbsp;

<h2>'Seriously don’t understand why this outrage'</h2>

Now, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has schooled Rohit-Dravid's critics. "India lost the second ODI, and immediately the trend in social media was - why so-and-so players played and why so-and-so players did not play. I seriously don’t understand why this outrage. Rohit and Virat didn’t play in the second ODI. Even in the first match, Rohit batted lower down the order. So the debate was around whether Rohit and Virat should have played," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

<h2>'The reason why we are favourites for ODI World Cup is the IPL'</h2>

Ashwin further pointed out, “Some of them were perplexed at how we lost to a team that didn’t even qualify for the World Cup. Many people think that India’s only job in international cricket is to win World Cup. The main reason why we consider ourselves favourites to win the World Cup is because of the IPL. ODI matches are very stressful. It will take at least two days for your body to recover. The first two matches in West Indies were played in a gap of 24 hours. Thus, there are more chances of you getting injured. Already we have so many players recovering at the NCA. Bumrah is back after a long hiatus. Prasidh Krishna is back too. So, we have so many injury problems. It seems like people are finding points to blame Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma just for the sake of it."

The 36-year-old Test specialist added,&nbsp;"They are trying different players now because they know what they went through during the last T20 World Cup. We didn’t have Ravindra Jadeja and Bumrah, and we didn’t have many fast bowlers. That’s why we are trying different options before the ODI World Cup."

At present, the Hardik Pandya-led Indian T20I team is set to lock horns with West Indies in the five-match series opener on Thursday (August 03) in Trinidad. After the West Indies tour, Rohit-Dravid-led Indian team will gear up for the Asia Cup, in the ODI format, which will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the home WC. They will hope for the likes of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to be deemed fit sooner than later, with Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna set to comeback in next month's Ireland T20Is, to strengthen their line-up before the ODI showpiece event later this year.

'Many think India's only job is to win WCs': Ashwin schools Rohit-Dravid's critics, backs team experiments

Hardik Pandya-led India romped West Indies by 200 runs in the third and final ODI in Trinidad on Tuesday (Aug 1) to clinch the three-match series 2-1. With this win, India claimed their 13th successive ODI series versus the Windies since 2007. After the series win, stand-in captain Hardik Pandya credited his 'wonderful chat with Virat Kohli' for a whirlwind knock in the series decider.

Opting to bat first, India once again rested regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Hardik led the side that rode on Ishan Kishan's 77, Shubman Gill's 85, Sanju Samson's 51 and Hardik's 52-ball 70 not out to post a mammoth 351 for 5. In reply, Shai Hope-led side only managed 151 in 35.3 overs to lose by a whopping 200-run margin.&nbsp;

Hardik's knock came at a good time for India as they continue to prepare for the Asia Cup and forthcoming ODI World Cup at home, in October-November. His last five scores were 7, 5, 40, 1 and 25. Thus, the 29-year-old came to his own in the series decider and led from the front. After the knock, he credited Kohli for a wonderful chat where the former Indian captain shared valuable inputs which helped Hardik.

At the post-match presentation, Hardik said, "I had a very wonderful chat with Virat a couple of days back, and the kind of input he gave me, he has seen me throughout the years. It's been almost seven or eight years of international cricket and he has seen me from day one. He had some pointers which really helped me. He just wanted me to spend some time on the crease and get used to the 50-over&nbsp;game as well because we have played so many T20 formats and yeah, that kind of stayed in my mind and I was just waiting for the opportunity. I'm really thankful to him as well to kind of share that experience with me."

On Rohit and Kohli being rested, Hardik backed the Rahul Dravid-led team management's decision and said, "Virat and Rohit are a very integral part of the team. And, you know, obviously, this was very important for someone like Rutu to get a game or Axar to get a game because they've been playing cricket for so many years, they know how exactly all these situations have been. So kind of giving them the youngsters exposure and kind of making sure that if we want to check something, we have the opportunity to do it."

Hardik will now lead the side in the upcoming five T20Is versus the Windies in the Caribbean, starting on August 03.

IND vs WI: Hardik Pandya credits 'wonderful chat with Virat Kohli' for his whirlwind knock in 3rd ODI

India thrashed West Indies by 200 runs in the third and final ODI&nbsp;at&nbsp;Trinidad, to win the three-match series 2-1. After the series opener, where India won by five wickets, India rested regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. While the Hardik Pandya-led second-stringed side lost the second and penultimate tie, by six wickets, they were at their dominant best in the series decider, on Tuesday (August 01).

Talking about the final ODI, India opted to bat first and rode on fifties from Shubman Gill (85), Ishan Kishan (77), Sanju Samson (51) and skipper Hardik's 52-ball 70* to post 351/5. In reply, Shai Hope-led Windies were bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs and lost&nbsp;by 200 runs. While Ishan and Gill made a strong case ahead of the ODI World Cup, Samson also did well with an attacking 51.&nbsp;

Samson has only played 13 ODIs since his international debut in 2015. He has scored 390 runs, with three fifties,&nbsp;at an average of 55.71. In 12 innings, he has surpassed the 30-run mark on seven occasions. However, he has never managed to get a long rope and has only featured in the absence of regulars. After his knock, former Indian stumper Saba Karim lauded Samson and labelled him as a 'perfect team man'.

<h2>'Sanju Samson is an enigma'</h2>

"Sanju Samson is an enigma for me. He bats so well. He is a gifted player. Today, his innings was like a whiff of fresh air. He said that that his intent was to go out and be aggressive. The way he handled the leg-spinner, who was looking quite good at that point in time, was so refreshing to watch. This is what Sanju Samson is capable of," Saba Karim told JioCinema after India's ODI series triumph over West Indies.

Karim added, "Sanju Samson has not got a series of chances. He has got in only when your regular players have been rested. It's not been an easy journey so far. But the fact remains that Sanju is still raring to go."

"You send him at No.3, he is more than happy. You send him at No.4, he scores a fifty. You send him down the order.. he is always there as a perfect team man. This is a just reward for Samson's persistence to be in the reckoning in the ODI squad."

Samson is part of Hardik-led India's T20I squad for the upcoming five games, which kicks off on August 03. The right-hander will be eager to make some big runs and feature in&nbsp;India's Asia Cup and ODI World Cup campaigns.

India thrashed West Indies by 200 runs in the third and final ODI at Trinidad, to win the three-match series 2-1. Talking about the final ODI, India opted to bat first and rode on fifties from Shubman Gill (85), Ishan Kishan (77), Sanju Samson (51) and skipper Hardik's 52-ball 70* to post 351/5. In reply, Shai Hope-led Windies were bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs and lost by 200 runs. While Ishan and Gill made a strong case ahead of the ODI World Cup, Samson also did well with an attacking 51. Samson has only played 13 ODIs since his international debut in 2015. He has scored 390 runs, with three fifties, at an average of 55.71. In 12 innings, he has surpassed the 30-run mark on seven occasions. However, he has never managed to get a long rope and has only featured in the absence of regulars. After his knock, former Indian stumper Saba Karim lauded Samson and labelled him as a 'perfect team man'. 'Sanju Samson is an enigma' "Sanju Samson is an enigma for me. Also read: Being an Indian cricketer is challenging, says Sanju Samson after a blistering 51 in IND vs WI 3rd ODI Karim added, "Sanju Samson has not got a series of chances. He has got in only when your regular players have been rested. It's not been an easy journey so far. But the fact remains that Sanju is still raring to go." "You send him at No.3, he is more than happy. You send him at No.4, he scores a fifty. You send him down the order.. he is always there as a perfect team man. This is a just reward for Samson's persistence to be in the reckoning in the ODI squad." Samson is part of Hardik-led India's T20I squad for the upcoming five games, which kicks off on August 03. The right-hander will be eager to make some big runs and feature in India's Asia Cup and ODI World Cup campaigns. IND vs WI: 'He hasn't got many chances but remains....' - Former Indian stumper lauds Sanju Samson

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by 200 runs in the third and final ODI to win the three-match series 2-1. The visitors won the series opener by five wickets and lost the second and penultimate tie by six wickets before dominating proceedings in the series decider. Once again, regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were rested but a second-string&nbsp;Indian team, who lost the second match rather disappointingly, displayed a strong performance to clinch the series.

There were several impressive performances from the Indian camp in the final ODI. Batting first, India rode on Ishan Kishan's 77, Shubman Gill's 85, Sanju Samson's 51 and stand-in captain Hardik's 52-ball 70 to post 351 for 5. In reply, the Windies bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs with Shardul Thakur claiming a four-for whereas Mukesh Kumar returned with a three-wicket haul.&nbsp;

As Rohit and Kohli were rested for the final two games, the Indian team tested the likes of Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, etc. Talking about Samson, he came out to bat at No. 4 and returned with a sparkling 41-ball 51, studded with 2 fours and 4 sixes at 124.39. After his high-quality knock, Samson said that it is 'challenging' being an Indian cricketer.

Talking to the broadcasters after India posted a mammoth 351/5, Samson said, "Being an Indian cricketer is challenging, I have played domestic cricket for the last 8-9 years and for India, here and there, so it gives you a bit of understanding of playing in different positions. It is the number of overs you get and it is not about batting position so you have to prepare accordingly."

“It feels really great to spend some time in the middle, score some runs and contribute for your country. I had different plans for different players, I wanted to use my feet and dominate the lengths of the bowlers," he added.

Samson has played 13 ODIs, scoring 390 runs with three half-centuries at an average of 55.71. He remains in contention to make it to India's 15-man squad for the ODI World Cup, to be held later this year in October-November.

Being an Indian cricketer is challenging, says Sanju Samson after a blistering 51 in IND vs WI 3rd ODI

Hardik Pandya-led India thumped West Indies by 200 runs in the third and final ODI, in Trinidad, to win the three-match series 2-1. After resting regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the second and penultimate ODI, where India lost by six wickets, the visitors once again played a second-string&nbsp;side and rode on fifties from Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and Hardik to post 351 for 5.

In reply, Shai Hope-led Windies were bundled out for 151 in 35.3 overs. After the match,&nbsp;29-year-old Hardik&nbsp;was asked about the venue (i.e. the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad which hosted its first-eve ODI). While Hardik claimed it to be&nbsp;one of the nicest grounds, however, he urged the West Indies Cricket Board (WCI) to ensure there are no hiccups when it&nbsp;comes to making travel arrangements.

<h2>'We don't ask for luxury but need basic necessities taken care of'</h2>

At the post-match presentation, Hardik said, "This was one of the nicest grounds we have played. Things can be better when we come to West Indies next time. Things like travel, hopefully the West Indies cricket board can take note and ensure that there are no hiccups. We don’t ask for luxury but we need some basic necessities taken care of."

Reflecting on the big win, Hardik said, "It’s a special win. To be honest, I look forward to these kind of games as a captain where there is something on the line. This was more than an international game. We knew what was at stake and there would be a lot of disappointment if we lost. The boys showed great character. They enjoyed it as well, in pressure situations it’s important to enjoy it as well. Virat and Rohit are integral parts of the team. But it was important to rest them so that people like Ruturaj Gaikwad could get a chance. It was about giving opportunities to youngsters."

'Don’t ask for luxury but...': Hardik Pandya on travel arrangements in West Indies after ODI series triumph

On Monday (July 31), the wait for the Indian cricket fans finally got over as Jasprit Bumrah's return was finalised. Bumrah, who has been out of international cricket since September 2022, was named as the captain of a second-string&nbsp;Indian team for the upcoming Ireland T20Is, in Dublin, next month. The Indian pacer's return was keenly awaited and his return is a huge blessing for Indian cricket ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023, to be held in India in October-November.&nbsp;

Bumrah's performance, and leadership, will be closely monitored as the ace pacer marks his much-awaited international return. After his name was announced in the squad for the Ireland T20Is, India's former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh congratulated Bumrah for his return and being named the captain but hopes he does not get injured again with the ODI WC just a few months away.&nbsp;

Sharing his views on the squad, Harbhajan said in a video on his YouTube channel, "Jasprit Bumrah has made a comeback. He was injured for a long time and his return was awaited. He has come back and has been made the captain straightaway. Congratulations to Jassi for becoming the captain and foremost for getting fit. I hope and keep my fingers crossed that Jassi doesn't get injured again."

I used to say earlier and am saying it today as well that if we talk about batting, we talk about Virat Kohli, and if there is a Virat Kohli of bowling, it is Jasprit Bumrah. There is no bigger name than him," Harbhajan added.

All eyes will be on Bumrah when India take on Ireland in the three T20Is next month. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is set to lead India in the forthcoming Asian Games in Japan, has been named as the speedster's deputy, whereas the likes of Tilak Verma and Rinku Singh earned their maiden call-up. Apart from Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna has also made his comeback after a lengthy injury layoff.

Fingers crossed that Bumrah doesn't get injured again, says Harbhajan ahead of India's Ireland T20Is

India are set to face West Indies in the third and final ODI in Trinidad on Tuesday (August 01). With the series levelled at 1-1, there is everything to play for the Rohit Sharma-led visitors as they continue to prepare for the forthcoming World Cup at home, which starts on October 05. Ahead of the final ODI, former India captain Kapil Dev made a glaring remark when he stated that the current Indian players are 'arrogant' and feel they know it all due to their big pay cheques.

In an interview with The Week, Kapil reacted to an old statement from his former teammate Sunil Gavaskar, where the Little Master revealed that&nbsp;the current Indian players have never called him up for help despite going through rough patches, unlike yesteryear superstars such as Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, etc.

To this, Kapil opined, "Sometimes, when too much money comes, arrogance comes. These cricketers, they feel they know everything. That's the difference. I would say there are so many cricketers who need help. When Sunil Gavaskar is there, why can't you talk? Why should there be ego? They feel they are good enough. Maybe they are good enough, but extra help from somebody, who has seen 50 seasons of cricket, won't hurt. He knows which side the grass grows and where the sun comes out from."

<h2>'Such questions crop up when....'</h2>

Now, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has reacted to all such claims. In a press conference ahead of the final ODI versus the Windies, Jadeja said, "I didn't know when he said this. I don't search too many things on social media. Everyone has their own opinion. It's nothing like that. Everybody is enjoying their game and working hard. Players are not taking their place in the team for granted. Whenever they are getting chances, they are giving their 100 per cent and trying to win games for India."

Talking about the ODI series opener, Rohit-led India won by five wickets in pursuit of 115 before the Men in Blue rested Rohit and Virat Kohli in the following ODI. Hardik Pandya led the side as the second-stringed Indian team lost by six wickets, in defence of 181. The series is up for grabs and India will be desperate to not concede the series to a team that is not even going to participate in the upcoming 50-over World Cup.

'Players are not...': Ravindra Jadeja reacts to Kapil Dev's claim of current Indian players being arrogant

Rohit Sharma-led Team India are currently in the midst of the three ODI series&nbsp;versus West Indies&nbsp;in the Caribbean island. After winning the series opener with five wickets, the Men in Blue played the second and penultimate tie without their&nbsp;regular captain and Virat Kohli. Hardik Pandya led the team and the second-stringed side fell for 181 to lose by six wickets.

After India's second ODI loss to the Windies, who are not even part of the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India later this year, former Team India pacer Venkatesh Prasad slammed the national side for their ordinary run in recent years, especially in white-ball formats.

<h2>'We have become used to celebrating mediocrity'</h2>

Prasad tweeted, "Test cricket aside, India has been very ordinary in the other two formats for quite some time now. Lost odi&nbsp;series against ban, SA and Aus. Poor in the last two T20 World Cups. Neither are we an exciting team like England nor brutal like how the Aussies used to be." He added, "Despite the money and power, we have become used to celebrating mediocrity and are far from how champion sides are. Every team plays to win and so does India but their approach and attitude is also a factor for underperformance over a period of time."

Speaking about Team India's run in recent years, they lost an ODI series to hosts Bangladesh in late 2022, were whitewashed in three 50-over games by South Africa&nbsp;in the African nation&nbsp;in early 2022 and also conceded a three-match ODI series to Australia earlier&nbsp;this year. Even in their last ODI series in New Zealand and Australia, in early and later 2020, respectively, India were listless and lost convincingly.

In Tests, they reached the WTC final twice in a row but came second by a significant margin. Meanwhile, in T20Is, Team India failed to go past the Super 12 stage in the 2021 T20 World Cup and bowed out of next year's edition, in Australia, in the semi-finals with a ten-wicket loss to eventual winners England.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma-led Team India are currently in the midst of the three ODI series versus West Indies in the Caribbean island. After winning the series opener with five wickets, the Men in Blue played the second and penultimate tie without their regular captain and Virat Kohli. 'We have become used to celebrating mediocrity' Prasad tweeted, "Test cricket aside, India has been very ordinary in the other two formats for quite some time now. Lost odi series against ban, SA and Aus. Poor in the last two T20 World Cups. Neither are we an exciting team like England nor brutal like how the Aussies used to be." He added, "Despite the money and power, we have become used to celebrating mediocrity and are far from how champion sides are. Every team plays to win and so does India but their approach and attitude is also a factor for underperformance over a period of time." Even in their last ODI series in New Zealand and Australia, in early and later 2020, respectively, India were listless and lost convincingly. In Tests, they reached the WTC final twice in a row but came second by a significant margin. Meanwhile, in T20Is, Team India failed to go past the Super 12 stage in the 2021 T20 World Cup and bowed out of next year's edition, in Australia, in the semi-finals with a ten-wicket loss to eventual winners England. 'Despite money and power, we've become...': Former India pacer lashes out at Rohit Sharma & Co.

Veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik feels India's biggest regret will be not playing R Ashwin in the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Karthik made the big claim while reflecting on Pat Cummins-led Australia's playing XI in the fifth and final Ashes Test, which got underway on Thursday (July 27) at The Oval, London. India faced Australia in the second WTC final, which was also held at the same ground in&nbsp;London, and lost the match by 209 runs to lose the coveted Test mace.

Karthik opined on Australia's XI, who included Todd Murphy after dropping him for the fourth Test. Backing the decision, he told Sky Sports, "Todd Murphy is coming in. We know the pitch is dry.&nbsp;Nathan&nbsp;Lyon has done well at the Oval over a period of time. So the obvious change."

<h2>'You are unearthing a cab wound'</h2>

The 38-year-old then recalled India's decision to drop ace spinner Ashwin, who is also the No. 1 ranked Test bowler, during the WTC final in early June. "But India left R Ashwin as well, didn't they? In the World Test championship final. And that possibly cost them because this pitch is dry. You are unearthing a cab wound there. I think we should let that go. But yes, I think they do when they look back at it. That is one of the biggest regrets they could have," he added.

In reply, India only managed 296 and gave a healthy 173-run lead before Pat Cummins &amp; Co. set up a challenging 444-run target for the Asian giants.

In their run-chase, India fell for a modest 234 on the final day to lose by a big margin. This became India's second straight defeat in the WTC final.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Australia are now focused on winning their first Ashes series in England since 2001 in the ongoing edition having entered the final Test with an unassailable 2-1 lead. They will look to replicate their performance from the WTC final to register another historic win at The Oval and end their tour of the United Kingdom on a high.&nbsp;

Leaving R Ashwin out of WTC Final will remain India's biggest regret, says veteran keeper Dinesh Karthik

Ahead of the first ODI of the three-match series versus West Indies, in Barbados, Indian captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media and gave a fitting reply when asked a repetitive question about Virat Kohli. A&nbsp;reporter asked whether Kohli's lack of tons is a concern for Team India. To this, the national captain Rohit stated that he has answered this query on several occasions in the past and insisted that the team doesn't care about “outside noises.”

“I've answered this question a lot of times. All the outside talk, who scored how many, took how many wickets... people who say such things don't know what happens inside. For us, what happens inside stays inside. We prefer that. For us, the most important is to win matches, not who's talking about what. It doesn't matter to us,” Rohit said in the press conference. He added,&nbsp;“Our priority is the three ODI matches right now, we're focussing on that."

WI vs IND: 'I've answered this a lot of times' - Rohit to reporter when asked about Kohli's lack of big knocks

After winning the two Tests 1-0, India will now face West Indies in the three-match ODI series opener on Thursday (July 27) in Barbados. Ahead of the series opener, captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media and opened up on the likely comeback of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah's last international match was in September 2022 and since then, he has been out of cricketing action due to injury concerns. He is at the National Cricket Acamdey (NCA) and is gearing up for a quick comeback, with the ODI World Cup to kick off on October 05 in India.&nbsp;

While Rohit mentioned that he is not aware of&nbsp;Bumrah's return, as per reports, he might feature in the Ireland T20Is next month. Rohit&nbsp;hopes he&nbsp;is able to play a few games before&nbsp;the ODI World Cup. Speaking to the reporters, he said, "The amount of experience he (Bumrah) brings is very important. Right now he’s coming from a serious injury and I’ve no idea if he’ll travel to Ireland because the team hasn’t been announced yet."

Hitman further added, "If he gets to play then it’s good and we hope he plays before the World Cup. When a player returns from a serious injury, match fitness, match feeling are some key components, which are missing. We’ll see what has been planned and everything depends on his recovery. We are in constant touch with the NCA and things look positive at the moment."

Along with Bumrah, India also awaits the return of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant before the 50-over showpiece event in India. While Pant is unlikely to feature in the mega event, Iyer and Rahul are expected to come back sooner than later as the duo are part of India's middle order.&nbsp;

Ahead of the ODI WC, India are set to play over ten games, including the Asia Cup and home ODIs versus five-time champions Australia. For now, they will aim to whitewash the Windies&nbsp;in the Caribbean.

We hope he plays before ODI World Cup: Rohit Sharma opines on Jasprit Bumrah as pacer eyes comeback

India and West Indies played out a tame draw in the second and final Test, in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, after the final day's play got washed out on Monday (July 24). After gaining a whopping 183-run lead, courtesy of Mohammed Siraj's 5 for 60, India accelerated from the word go in their second essay on the fourth day, with rain already making its presence felt. Thus, they managed to set up a challenging 365-run target for the hosts. Day Five was going to be a tough contest between bat and ball, with West Indies in search of 289 more runs whereas India needed eight more scalps for a win.

Nonetheless, rain played spoilsport to the entire day as honours were shared with India winning the series 1-0. Talking about Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.'s approach in the second innings, it impressed one and all as the visitors declared at 181 for 2 in just 24 overs (with a run rate of 7.54). Thus, many compared India's style of play with England's Bazball. Recently, Ishan Kishan -- who slammed an unbeaten 34-ball 52 in India's second essay&nbsp;-- opined on England's Bazball and made a big claim.&nbsp;

Kishan feels England's Bazball is only possible on flat tracks. "It is not possible that you can play that fast every day, it depends upon the situation also," he told the reporters after Day five of the second Test got completely washed out.

<h2>'Don't think it is necessary that we must play...'</h2>

The 25-year-old added, "If the wicket is flat, where you can score quickly, and the need of the team is to get runs quickly, then I think you can take on that action. I don't think it is necessary that we must play in an aggressive manner in every match, but whenever there will be a need of playing attacking cricket, we have got enough firepower in our ranks. I don't think you can always play attacking shots in Test cricket."

A lot has been said and written about England's Bazball approach in the red-ball format ever since Ben Stokes became the captain along with Brendon McCullum joining in as the head coach&nbsp;in early 2022. Since then, the Three Lions have been on a roll in whites but lost a golden opportunity to win a home Ashes series in the ongoing 2023 edition after the fourth and penultimate Test, in Manchester, ended in a draw. Pat Cummins-led Aussies lead the five-match series 2-1.&nbsp;

IND vs WI: Ishan Kishan not in favour of England's Bazball, says it can only be executed on flat tracks

Rishabh Pant is still recovering months after being in&nbsp;a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) recent release, the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has started batting and keeping wickets in the nets in the National Cricket Academy (NCA). While he may be recovering at a rapid pace, he is likely to miss the forthcoming ODI World Cup&nbsp;at home, as the board will be eager to not rush his return. As per Ishant Sharma, India's veteran pacer, Pant may also miss next year's Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ishant, who is part of the commentary panel for the India-West Indies Tests, feels Pant might not play next year's IPL as well. In his absence, his franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) was led by David Warner this year and the one-time runners-up failed to reach the playoffs. They finished at the ninth spot with five wins from 14 encounters.&nbsp;

<h2>'Not easy for a wicketkeeper and batter'</h2>

"I feel we might not see Rishabh Pant in the next IPL as well because it is not a small injury. It was a very serious accident. He has just started batting and wicketkeeping and to run and turn after that, there are a lot of things, which is not easy for a wicketkeeper and a batter," Ishant told Jio Cinema.

Ishant, who has represented India in 105 Tests, added, "The good thing is that he didn't have a second surgery. If he had undergone a second surgery, he would have been out for even longer. He has had one surgery now but I don't think he will be fit for the World Cup for sure. Hopefully, if he gets fit for the IPL, it will be great."

Apart from Pant, India have several injury concerns at the moment. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Prasidh Krishna are also in recovery mode from their respective injuries ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup at home, to be held in October-November this year.&nbsp;

Pant's ardent fans will hope for his quick return but the Indian team will like to take it slowly with him, post his horrific car crash. The star player remains India's preferred keeper-batter across formats and his return is keenly awaited. Talking about his IPL franchise, the DC unit will hope for him to return in IPL 2024 as his absence was severely felt by them in this year's edition.

The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Prasidh Krishna are also in recovery mode from their respective injuries ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup at home, to be held in October-November this year. 'Might not see Rishabh Pant in IPL 2024' - India pacer on star player recovering after horrific car crash

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been a highly successful bowling pair for India in the purest format of the game. They have given sleepless nights to every Test team touring India whereas the duo have also enjoyed bowling in the subcontinent and&nbsp;had some success overseas (especially in the Caribbean island). On Day Four of the second and final Test in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, Ashwin and Jadeja achieved a massive feat by becoming only the second Indian pair to have 500, or more, wickets.&nbsp;

Ashwin and Jadeja got to the feat during the final session on Day Four, on Sunday (July 23), when the former claimed two breakthroughs in West Indies' stiff 365-run chase in the series decider. Thus, Ashwin and Jadeja joined Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the 500-wicket club as a pair.&nbsp;

IND vs WI: R Ashwin-Ravindra Jadeja join Anil Kumble-Harbhajan Singh in ELITE list during series finale

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has tipped Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill to take Indian cricket forward once the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retire. Both Kohli and Rohit are in the last phase of their careers. Thus, Team India is focused in grooming the youngsters to keep the team in good stead by the time Kohli, Rohit, R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. retire.

<h2>'Jaiswal and Gill&nbsp;strong contenders to take Indian cricket's batting&nbsp;forward after Rohit&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kohli'</h2>

Thus, Jaffer feels young stars such as Jaiswal and Gill have it in them to take over the baton from Kohli and Rohit once the duo steps aside. During a discussion on JioCinema, he stated, "One is Yashasvi Jaiswal. I see him as a three-format player. He has performed amazingly well in the IPL and has made an excellent start in Test cricket."

"Shubman Gill is the second name I will take. If we talk only about batting, I see these two players as very strong contenders who will take Indian cricket forward after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,"&nbsp;Jaffer further opined.

In addition, Jaffer also picked Gujarat Titans' (GT) Sai Sudharsan as another strong candidate to handle India's batting responsibilities in future. "Sai Sudharsan is a player who I have liked a lot, the way he has played in the IPL. After that, he has scored a century against Pakistan A in the emerging teams' tournament that is going on. So I feel he can become a very good player in the future," added the former batter who represented India in 31 Tests and two ODIs.

Jaiswal and Gill have been in splendid form in 2023. Gill has scored hundreds across formats -- including a double ton in ODIs -- and was the Orange Cap winner for most runs (890) in IPL 2023. Jaiswal also ended this year's IPL with 625 runs, including a best of 124, and scored a sublime 171 in his debut Test in the ongoing West Indies tour.

Sudharshan, on the other hand, had a good run in IPL 2023, followed by consistent performances in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Recently, he also scored a century versus Pakistan in the ongoing Emerging Asia Cup tournament.

Jaiswal, Gill will take Indian cricket forward after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, predicts Wasim Jaffer

India is taking on West Indies in the second and final Test on Thursday (July 20) at Port-of-Spain in Trinidad. Having won the series opener by an innings and 141 runs, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will aim for a series whitewash to also add vital points in their kitty in the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Ahead of the second Test's commencement, Hitman hinted that India won't tinker too much with their playing XI after having won the first Test, in Dominica, without dropping much sweat.&nbsp;

Rohit also spoke at length about Ishan Kishan, who made his Test debut in&nbsp;the series opener. He was unbeaten on 1 in India's first innings&nbsp;but was impressive behind the stumps. Rohit revealed that Ishan has been given full freedom to play in his attacking manner even in the purest format of the game.&nbsp;

Speaking to the reporters ahead of the second Test, Rohit said, "Ishan is a very talented player. We have seen it in the short career that he has had for India. He scored a double hundred in limited overs. He has the game, we have the responsibility to chisel that talent. We have to give him opportunities. He is a left-handed batter. He likes playing aggressive cricket. I have had clear discussions with him, and I have explained to him how the team management wants him to play. He has been given freedom. He has the game, he needs the freedom and we will give him the opportunity."

Rohit also opined on Ishan's wicketkeeping skills. He stated, "I would like to speak specifically about his wicket-keeping. He kept really, really well considering he played his first Test and to keep against Ashwin and Jadeja where the ball is turning and bouncing and some balls keeping low as well... I was very impressed with his keeping skills. Unfortunately, he got to score just one run as we had to declare. We want our top-order batters bat long. If the opportunity comes (to bat long), he (Ishan) is raring to go."

With India entering a transition phase, given the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, etc. being in the last phase of their careers, the national side is focused on backing their young stars. The current Test squad comprises Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar, Ishan, etc. The visiting side is keen on seeing their youngsters flourish. After Jaiswal's blitz in the series opener, India will hope for Ishan to get a big score in the final Test.

Virat Kohli's 500th int'l game: Indian star reacts ahead of landmark appearance in WI vs IND 2nd Test - Watch

R Ashwin was not part of India's XI in their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final versus Australia, held last month at The Oval, London. India lost the game by 209 runs and many raised fingers at Rohit Sharma-led team management for overlooking the veteran off-spinner. Ahead of India's first game in the 2023-25 WTC cycle, Ashwin gave an interview, where he opened up on his WTC final snub, equation with his teammates, etc.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Ashwin opened up on the team environment and reflected on his equation with the Team India members. In this regard, he pointed out, "This is an era where everybody is a colleague. Once upon a time when cricket was played, all your teammates were friends. Now, they’re colleagues. There’s a big difference because here people are there to advance themselves and to stride ahead of another person sitting to your right or left. So nobody’s got the time to say, ‘okay, boss what are you up to’?"

<h2>'There aren't much friendships, it isn't like family'</h2>

Now, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra shared his take on Ashwin's claims, which have made heads turn in the cricketing fraternity. He recalled the highly successful Australian team of the late 1990s and early 2000s and claimed even they didn't like each other, but became a different unit once they stepped inside the 22-yard cricket strip.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "They (Australian team members) didn't really like each other as much, which is ok. But as soon as they crossed the boundary, there were unstoppable. It was almost impossible to stop them. A star-studded team that played for each other. It wasn't as if Ian Healy refused to catch on Shane Warne's delivery, or someone missed a run-out chance because they didn't like the other. Everybody was trying their best to make Australia win. And it isn't just one example, it happens with a lot of teams."

He added, “There aren't many friendships, it isn't like family. There's cut-throat competition but teams are successful. It isn't mandatory that teams will be successful with only a family-like atmosphere. Your teammates don't have to care a lot about your position in the team.”

Talking about Ashwin, the 36-year-old is currently involved in India's two-match Test series versus West Indies in the Caribbean island. The veteran spinner ended with a 12-wicket haul in the opening Test, which India won by an innings and 141 runs, and is now gearing up for the second and final match in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad starting on Thursday (July 20).

So nobody’s got the time to say, ‘okay, boss what are you up to’?" 'There aren't much friendships, it isn't like family' Now, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra shared his take on Ashwin's claims, which have made heads turn in the cricketing fraternity. And it isn't just one example, it happens with a lot of teams." Also read: 'Having him in ODI World Cup squad is a must': Sourav Ganguly calls for THIS young Indian star's inclusion He added, “There aren't many friendships, it isn't like family. There's cut-throat competition but teams are successful. It isn't mandatory that teams will be successful with only a family-like atmosphere. Your teammates don't have to care a lot about your position in the team.” Talking about Ashwin, the 36-year-old is currently involved in India's two-match Test series versus West Indies in the Caribbean island. The veteran spinner ended with a 12-wicket haul in the opening Test, which India won by an innings and 141 runs, and is now gearing up for the second and final match in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad starting on Thursday (July 20). 'Australian players didn't like each other much...': Ex-India opener on R Ashwin's 'dressing room' remark

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star performer for Team India in their massive win over West Indies in the two-match Test series opener in Dominica. The left-hander started his Test career with an impressive 171 to become the 17th Indian to hit a century on Test debut, 113th overall. Jaiswal started on a promising note and never looked out of sorts to make a roaring start to his international career.&nbsp;

Ever since Jaiswal announced his arrival in style at the international level, talks are rife that he should be given a run in the white-ball formats as well. While India have only a handful of games left prior to the ODI World Cup's commencement, at home, some feel Jaiswal can still be tried in the 50-over format. Former Indian skipper and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has backed Jaiswal to be a part of the ODI WC squad. In conversation with the Telegraph on the young player, Ganguly heaped praise on the 21-year-old and feels he is a 'must' for the ODI WC squad.

“Scoring a hundred on debut is always massive. I too have done it, so I know how special it is. Even technique-wise, he seems really good. A left-handed batsman’s presence in the team always helps. So, having him in the World Cup squad is a must,” Ganguly emphasised.

'Having him in ODI World Cup squad is a must': Sourav Ganguly calls for THIS young Indian star's inclusion

India are gearing up for the second and final Test versus West Indies, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, which commences on Thursday (July 20). After a mammoth innings and 141-run win in the series opener, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will be confident in taking on the depleted hosts. All eyes will once again be on India's promising youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal debuted in the first Test and returned with a brilliant 171. Thus, it will be interesting to see if Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar get a chance in the final Test.

At present, Indian cricket is in an interesting phase. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, etc. are in the last phase of their careers but have a big role to play in shaping up the younger lot. In this regard, Captain Rohit told reporters that the transition will take place sooner or later, but emphasised the importance of the role of seniors in grooming the juniors.

<h2>'Our role is important as we have to give them clarity'</h2>

While highlighting the potential of the emerging players, Rohit stated, "Transition has to happen, whether today or tomorrow but I am happy that our boys who are coming in are doing well. And our role is important as we have to give them role clarity. Now it's up to them how they want to prepare and perform for the team. ... And we rely on those individuals and obviously they are the future of Indian cricket and they will take Indian cricket to greater heights."

The upcoming second Test will be the 100th face-off between India and West Indies in the purest format of the game. In this regard, Rohit said, "It’s an honour to be taking the Indian team into this game and it doesn’t happen every day. The two teams have so much history, and so much good cricket played. I will expect no different in this Test. I am sure they (Windies) will bounce back and it will be exciting for both teams."

India lead the series 1-0 and will aim for a whitewash to further move ahead in the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle.

WI vs IND: Rohit Sharma talks about role of seniors in grooming youngsters as India aims for smooth transition

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star for India in their two-match Test series opener versus West Indies in Dominica. After R Ashwin's five-for led to the Windies being bundled out for 150, India rode on centuries from captain Rohit Sharma (103) and debutant Jaiswal, who slammed an impressive 171, to declare at 421 for 5 with an overall lead of 271. In reply, Ashwin again starred with the ball, returning with 7 for 71, as India dismissed the hosts for 130 to win by an innings and 141 runs.&nbsp;

Thus, Jaiswal is off to a brilliant start to his international career as he also ended with the Player-of-the-Match award. Ahead of the second and final Test, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, India's batting coach Vikram Rathour heaped praise on the swashbuckling left-hander and made a big statement.

<h2>Yashasvi is a dynamic batsman:&nbsp;Rathour</h2>

In a press conference, Rathour said, "I’ve been a selector before, so whenever you pick a player you should pick him with the intent that he will play for India for the next 10 years. He definitely has the potential."

“For me, the most important thing (even though) I haven’t worked with Yashasvi before, was that I had seen him scoring runs at the IPL, you saw how dynamic a batsman he is, the kind of stroke player he is. But he managed to change the game according to the situation of the team," he added.

Jaiswal stitched a mammoth 229-run opening stand with captain Rohit (103) to become only the 17th Indian, 113th overall, to slam a ton on his Test debut. He started off on a promising note and while he took a step back during Day Two's proceedings, he always looked in complete control and took his innings forward. After a stunning start to his red-ball career, Jaiswal said at the post-match presentation, "Preparation was pretty good. We were having a nice session. Spoke a lot to Rahul Dravid sir. Would like to thank all the selectors and Rohit (Sharma) bhai for having faith in me. It's really nice, I have been working for this. I've been focusing on preparing well and having discipline. Playing Test cricket for India is very special and emotional for me. This is just the start, I need to keep my focus and keep working on my cricket."

'He will play for India for next 10 years': India's batting coach lavishes huge praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal

Team India thrashed West Indies by an innings and 141 runs in the two-match Test series opener in Dominica. The second and final Test kicks off on July 20 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. In recent years, India have dominated the red-ball format and also reached the knockouts in all ICC events, barring the 2021 T20 World Cup, but have failed to win the&nbsp;silverware.&nbsp;

Little Master Sunil Gavaskar recently took a dig at modern-day Indian captains and how they enjoy enough security despite not being able to win ICC titles or facing heavy defeats. Gavaskar feels there should be more accountability to be taken by the captains and coaches of the team.&nbsp;

<h2>'This has been happening since 2011'</h2>

"Whether you win or lose, the captain knows that he is going to be there. This has not been a recent case, mind you. This has been happening since 2011. There have been results where we have been wiped out in the series 0-4, 0-4 but the captain hasn't changed," said former India captain Gavaskar while speaking to&nbsp;the Indian Express Idea Exchange.

Gavaskar's statement can perhaps be seen as a question towards MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper. While Dhoni enjoyed good success as a white-ball captain, India were miserable during their away tours of England (in 2011/12 and 2014), Australia (in 2011/12) and South Africa&nbsp;and New Zealand (in&nbsp;2013/14) under the former Indian wicketkeeper.&nbsp;

However, Dhoni retained the Test captaincy until he retired from the format in late 2014 during the Australia tour. From thereon, Virat Kohli took over and led India to the No. 1 ranking (with the team faring well in away tours as well).

Similarly, the likes of Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not led India to an ICC title&nbsp;after the end of Dhoni's successful era as the white-ball skipper. However, Kohli remained Test and T20I captain till the time he decided to step aside, but was sacked as the ODI skipper.

After India's 2021-23 WTC final loss to Australia, many raised fingers at Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid as well. However, the duo continue to hold their respective posts. But things might change if India fail to win the ICC ODI World Cup, at home, later this year.

WI vs IND: Virat Kohli closes gap with Sachin Tendulkar in elite list after surpassing MS Dhoni in Dominica

On Thursday (July 14), Yashasvi Jaiswal created history as he became only the 17th Indian, 113rd player overall, to slam a hundred on Test debut. Jaiswal got to the remarkable feat during Day Two of the first Test, in Dominica, between India and West Indies. The left-hander began his innings with a lot of promise and while he was cautious on Day Two, he never looked out of sorts and reached the triple-figure mark without dropping much sweat.&nbsp;

After Jaiswal entered the record books during Day Two's proceedings in Dominica, wishes have been pouring in for him from all corners. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar also joined in and congratulated the 21-year-old left-hander. He tweeted, "A यशस्वी&nbsp;start to your Test career, @ybj_19! Well done. And a splendid century by @ImRo45." It is to be noted that&nbsp;Yashasvi means successful. Check out the former batter's post:

REVEALED! BCCI announces full schedule of India's tour of South Africa, set to kick off on December 10

Yashavi Jaiswal entered record books as he became the 17th Indian to score a Test century on debut, on Thursday (July 13), during Day Two of the first Test between India and West Indies in Dominica. Jaiswal started his innings with a lot of confidence and while he was more cautious on Day Two, he never looked out of sorts and reached the three-figure mark without dropping much sweat.

At stumps on Day Two, Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 143 and must be eyeing the 200-run mark in his first-ever appearance in the red-ball format. After reaching a historic hundred, Jaiswal has been flooded with several congratulatory messages in the cricketing fraternity. Ishant Sharma, the cricketer-turned-commentator, also heaped praise on the 21-year-old and made a big claim.&nbsp;

<h2>'Jaiswal&nbsp;is absolutely ready to play Tests in England and Australia'</h2>

Speaking to JioCinema, Ishant -- a veteran of 105 Tests -- said, "According to me, he is absolutely ready to play Tests in England and Australia because if you see this innings as well, all the boundaries he hit, especially against the new ball, they all came with cut or pull shots."

WI vs IND: 'He is ready to play Tests in Australia and England' - Ishant heaps praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal

India continued their dominance in the opening Test versus West Indies, in Dominica, during Day Two on Thursday (July 13). Resuming the day at 80 for no loss, after the Windies were bundled out for 150, Indian openers Rohit Sharma (103) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (143 not out) put India on top with their 229-run stand before they went to stumps at 312 for 2, leading by 162 runs. Besides Jaiswal -- who became the 17th Indian to score a century on Test debut -- Shubman Gill also made heads turn. He had his first stint at the No. 3 spot, but fell cheaply.

Prior to the Test series opener, captain Rohit revealed that Gill had asked the team management to use him at No. 3, instead of playing as an opener. However, the right-hander failed to get going and departed for six. After the day's play, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra opined on Gill and feels he will have to tweak his batting technique at his new batting slot.&nbsp;

Speaking on his YouTube channel after Day 2, Chopra said, "Shubman Gill came at No. 3. It is difficult and he will realise that. He has played the majority of his innings in first-class cricket as an opener. He came at No. 3 here after a huge partnership. He plays with slightly hard hands. So his method of defending with hard hands, he will have to change it slightly as he plays more in Test matches."

Meanwhile, Chopra also opined on Virat Kohli's unbeaten knock. Kohli came out to bat after Rohit's dismissal and stitched an unbroken 72-run third-wicket stand with centurion Jaiswal before second day's play ended. The former Indian captain is batting on 36 and will be eager to break his five-year-long overseas century drought in the purest format of the game.&nbsp;

Talking about Gill, he will be gutted to miss out on scoring big in the first innings. However, he will look to make amends in his next outing.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Chopra also opined on Virat Kohli's unbeaten knock. Kohli came out to bat after Rohit's dismissal and stitched an unbroken 72-run third-wicket stand with centurion Jaiswal before second day's play ended. The former Indian captain is batting on 36 and will be eager to break his five-year-long overseas century drought in the purest format of the game. Talking about Gill, he will be gutted to miss out on scoring big in the first innings. However, he will look to make amends in his next outing. WI vs IND: 'He will have to...' - Former Indian opener opines on India's new No. 3 Shubman Gill's technique

Rohit Sharma-led India&nbsp;kicked off their tour of West Indies on Wednesday (July 12) on Day One of the first Test. The&nbsp;day's play was headlined by R Ashwin's five-wicket haul, 5 for 60, as the Windies were bundled out for 150 -- opting to bat first -- before Rohit (30 not out) and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (unbeaten 40) took India to 80 for no loss.

Ahead of the two-match Test series opener, Rohit addressed the pre-match presser and revealed India's batting order. He confirmed that Shubman Gill -- who has been opening for India across formats -- will be batting at No. 3, a request he himself came up with prior to the Dominica Test.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra opened up on Gill's request and admitted 'neither does anyone make that request, nor anyone is given that luxury' but feels the move might work for Team India.

<h2>'You don't see a player telling team management that he likes to...'</h2>

Chopra said on his official YouTube channel, "Shubman Gill told team management that he wanted to play at no.3. It's a very interesting thing, because you don't usually hear such things happening in Indian cricket. You don't see a player telling team management that he likes to bat in a particular position. Neither does anyone make that request, nor anyone is given that luxury. But the good thing is Yashasvi Jaiswal can now open."

He opined, "But in Test cricket, if there's one difficult job, it's that of opener. Especially away from home. No. 3 is still a challenging spot, but no. 4 is the most settled spot and you usually keep your best batter in that spot. You don't want him to bat with the tail.

“Shubman at no.3, I'm not surprised. I tweeted in 2020 that he would play long for India but in few years time, you would see him batting in the middle. Now, he has himself expressed that wish,” Chopra added.

Thus, Gill is replacing Cheteshwar Pujara at the No. 3 spot after the latter was dropped for the WI series following a streak of ordinary performances in the 2021-23 WTC cycle.
