Jasprit Bumrah is set to return to international cricket after a long layoff due to a back injury. He last represented India in September 2022 and went on to miss the T20 World Cup 2022, tour of Bangladesh, home Tests versus Australia, IPL 2023, the WTC final and entire tour of West Indies. Bumrah's return is a huge sigh of relief for Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup at home, in October-November.&nbsp;

Bumrah's bowling will not only be closely monitored, but the Ireland T20Is also presents him a chance to showcase his leadership skills in the shortest format. It is to be noted that the ace pacer led India in the rescheduled fifth and final Test versus England, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, last year (where India lost by seven wickets in defence of 378). While some believe Bumrah should not have been given the added responsibility of leading the side, despite him being the most experienced, in his comeback series, former Indian stumper Saba Karim believes it is the right call.&nbsp;

As quoted by PTI, the former selector said, "The team management and selectors would be more concerned about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness levels and match fitness. This (series) is a T20 format and it (captaincy) won’t add more burden on him. It will only help him to understand his body better. They (India) are playing three T20 games, he can play at different phases."

India will open the three-match T20I series versus Ireland on Friday evening (August 18) in Dublin. The 29-year-old Bumrah will be looking forward to a good run, both as bowler and captain of the side.&nbsp;

IND vs IRE, 1st T20I: Captaincy will only help Bumrah to understand his body better, opines ex-Indian stumper

Former India head player and coach Ravi Shastri has backed 'seasoned captain' Rohit Sharma ahead of the two-time winners' campaign in the much-awaited ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. The mega event will be entirely hosted by India in October-November, with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in the tournament opener on October 05. Team India will open their campaign versus five-time winners Australia in Chennai on October 08. They will face arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

<h2>'Come CWC 2023, Rohit will up the ante'</h2>

Shastri said while speaking on Star Sports, “I think he is a seasoned captain. Come the World Cup, he will up the ante. Bilaterals are one thing. When it comes to big tournaments, you switch on in a different manner. He knows the nucleus of the players. It is about him ensuring that everyone in that batting lineup knows that they don't own batting positions."

"You've got to be flexible with your batting ladder. No matter who the name of the player is. You do not own positions. You got to have flexibility. That is paramount, and use the right guys against the right oppositions,” Shastri further asserted.

Under Rohit, India will start as one of the favourites for the coveted title despite their mixed run across formats in recent times. Rohit-led India fell flat in Asia Cup 2022 (held in T20I format), bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia, lost ODIs to Bangladesh (in the Bangla Tigers' den), 50-over home series to the Aussies and also came second in the WTC final (losing to Pat Cummins &amp; Co.). India, under Hardik Pandya, also conceded their first-ever T20I series when they recently lost to West Indies.&nbsp;

In addition, the former head coach believes that the India think tank has a group of 18-20 players that have been shortlisted for the home ODI WC. "The think tank would have thought about a group of 18 or 20 players at least four or five months before the World Cup and then given opportunities to each one of them, kept an eye on the injuries too, you know, whichever players who were part of the mix who got injuries and just come back, and then pick the right guys,” Shastri added.

India will look to end their ICC title drought since 2013 when they turn up for the 50-over showpiece event at home. Thus, Rohit has a litmus test to lead India to the mega title after a long time.

At present, Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead a second-stringed Indian team in Dublin, Ireland for a three-match T20I series which kicks off on Friday (August 18). It will mark Bumrah's international return since September 2022.

Come ODI World Cup, he will up the ante: Shastri reposes faith on captain Rohit Sharma ahead of mega event

Rishabh Pant's batting video made heads turn recently. The wicketkeeper-batter is recovering from a horrific car crash which took place on December 30, 2022. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for Pant to resume batting as he is striving hard to make a comeback in the national setup. Despite the 25-year-old's speedy recovery, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes that the star player's return is 'quite far away as of now.'

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra pointed out, “Rishabh Pant had posted a video where Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were seen batting after a long time. Now his videos have come from which it seems he is coming back. He has started batting against the bowling machine. He has started playing against 140 kph but Pant's comeback is quite far away as of now."

It is to be noted that Pant’s accident took place on the Delhi-Dehradun highway when the keeper-batter was driving to his hometown of Roorkee. As a result, the star cricketer suffered injuries to his head, back, and leg but managed to escape by breaking a window. Since then, he has shown significant progress in his recovery as fans await his return in national colours. In Pant's absence, India lost the home ODI series to Australia early this year, WTC final and the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in West Indies and USA.

Rishabh Pant's comeback is quite far away, feels Aakash Chopra after his batting video goes viral

From Sachin Tendulkar to Suresh Raina: Top six Indian batters with most runs in Asia Cup (ODIs)

With less than two months left for the ODI World Cup&nbsp;in India in October-November, India is still figuring out how to fix their middle order. The No. 4 spot remains a huge cause of concern for Team India in recent years. They were sweating hard on finalising a No. 4 prior to the 2019 World Cup as well, and Shreyas Iyer's injury has once again put Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. in a spot of bother.

India are currently awaiting the fitness report of KL Rahul and Iyer, two of their middle-order batters, ahead of their Asia Cup squad announcement. If they are fit, the two&nbsp;will solve India's middle-order crisis going into the home World Cup. If not, India have some tough calls to make. Amid all this, former India coach Ravi Shastri admitted that he wanted Kohli to bat at No. 4 during the last World Cup, held in England and Wales.

Discussing India's squad for the upcoming ICC event, Shastri revealed on Star Sports' Selection Day,&nbsp;"If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it. Even in the previous two World Cups, when I was coach in 2019, I thought I might have discussed that with MSK as well of him batting at four just to break that top heavy line up."

"You know, because if we lost two or three at the top, we were gone and it was proved so just for reaching that the experience. And if you look at Virat Kohli's record, he is good enough at number four,"&nbsp;Shastri added.

Under Kohli, India reached the semi-finals of the 2019 edition, losing to eventual runners-up New Zealand by 18 runs in chase of 240.

India have been a top-heavy side for a long time, especially since Rohit and Kohli's rise in the format. Till MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Kedar Jadhav's presence, India did not feel a void in the middle and lower-order but same hasn't been the case since their departures. Injuries to Iyer and Rahul have also not helped India's cause.

At present, India is gearing up for the 50-over Asia Cup, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which commences on August 30. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the home ODI WC. Before the continental tournament, Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-stringed Indian team in three T20I versus hosts Ireland, starting on August 18.

Wanted Virat Kohli to bat at No. 4 during CWC '19, reveals former India coach Ravi Shastri

Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on August 13 (Sunday). This was India's first-ever five-match T20I series defeat and their maiden bilateral series loss to the Windies, comprising a minimum of three games, since 2006. Throughout the series, captain Hardik failed to impress with his decision-making whereas also struggled with the bat.

Hardik ended with 77 runs in five games, at a strike rate of 110. With him being rested for the upcoming three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, the all-rounder will now gear up for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which kicks off on August 30. It will serve as an ideal dress rehearsal for the Asian sides before the ODI World Cup in India, in October-November.

Before the Asia Cup, former Indian stumper Parthiv analysed Hardik's captaincy in the WI T20Is and called it a 'work in progress'. In addition, he was concerned with his form and feels the 29-year-old needs runs under his belt before the CWC '23 edition.

Highlighting how Hardik did not use Axar Patel properly in the WI T20Is, Patel told Cricbuzz, "Against Nicholas Pooran, he (Hardik Pandya) gave that over to Axar Patel and not bowling Yuzvendra Chahal. Bowling changes and the utilisation of the bowlers are something that tells me that Hardik, the captain for India, is still a work in progress. "

He added, "And there is obviously a little concern about his batting. He needs runs. He didn't get runs in the IPL, he didn't get runs in the last couple of series as well. India would want to get some runs for Hardik Pandya in the Asia Cup or the series against Australia before the World Cup."

Hardik only played one good knock in the WI tour, during the ODI series decider where he ended with an entertaining 70 not out. With the ball, he accounted for five scalps in eight white-ball games in West Indies and USA.

Hardik also had a moderate run&nbsp;in IPL 2023, ending with 346 runs at 136.75 (along with&nbsp;three wickets). He did play out the situation with caution in a few games versus New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia early this year, during the home ODIs. However, the ODI vice-captain will be aware that he needs to be at his all-round best, especially with the bat, heading&nbsp;into the 50-over World Cup.

India would want Hardik Pandya to get some runs in Asia Cup ahead of CWC '23, feels former Indian stumper

Virat Kohli batted only twice during India's just-concluded all-format tour of West Indies. He played the two Tests and ODI series opener before being rested for the final two games and returned home&nbsp;not being part of the T20I setup (since the 2022 T20 World Cup). During his limited time in the middle, Kohli took his international century tally to 76 with a fine 121 in the second and final Test.&nbsp;

When Kohli got to his 76th ton, talks resumed whether he would surpass Sachin Tendulkar's 100 centuries record, most by any batter at the international level. Being rested for majority of the ODIs, the former Indian captain's WI tour ended pretty soon and, thus, he could not add more to his tally.

He will now gear up for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023, in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, starting on August 30, which will soon be followed by the home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

While many believe he will be keen to come close to Tendulkar's tally and aim to break it soon, in the coming years, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa rubbished all such claims.

Uthappa, part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup win under MS Dhoni, feels Kohli isn't bothered about personal records and will be focusing on winning games for India in the upcoming Asia Cup and CWC '23.

Speaking to Times of India, the former player said. "Virat (Kohli) doesn't really care about breaking records anymore. We as people and fans are obsessed with it. He would much rather win matches for India irrespective of those hundreds. Virat's focus will be on winning matches for India in the Asia Cup and World Cup. He doesn't really care about the records."

Uthappa added, "Whether he (Virat) achieves that milestone (breaking Sachin's ODI centuries record) during the Asia Cup, World Cup or at any (other) point in his career, it doesn't matter because his sole focus is on winning matches for India, not his hundreds."

At present, the 34-year-old Kohli has a chance to break Tendulkar's record. He still has plenty of cricket left in him even if he only plays Tests and ODIs. However, he will be focused on the larger picture, i.e. of ending India's ten-year-long ICC title drought with a win in the home 50-over World Cup at home later this year.

He played the two Tests and ODI series opener before being rested for the final two games and returned home not being part of the T20I setup (since the 2022 T20 World Cup). During his limited time in the middle, Kohli took his international century tally to 76 with a fine 121 in the second and final Test. When Kohli got to his 76th ton, talks resumed whether he would surpass Sachin Tendulkar's 100 centuries record, most by any batter at the international level. Uthappa feels Virat Kohli not bothered about personal feats, focused on doing well in Asia Cup, CWC '23

KL Rahul is nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru. Ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement, the Indian team management is keenly awaiting the final fitness report of Rahul as well as Shreyas Iyer as their middle-order woes continue. While reports have been positive with regard to Rahul's fitness, it remains to be seen if he makes the squad for the upcoming continental tournament, starting on August 30.

While there is no doubt that India desperately need both Rahul and Iyer back in the squad, ex-Indian head coach Ravi Shastri doesn't want the former to speed up&nbsp;his return for the Asia Cup, to be jointly hosted by&nbsp;Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Shastri feels it might not be fair on Rahul to return in the multi-nation tournament and also don the gloves.

Speaking on Star Sports' Selection Day show, Shastri opined, "See when when you're talking of a player (KL Rahul) who's not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you're asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you're talking keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that's a no no."

Thus, Shastri feels India can opt for Ishan Kishan's services, an attacking left-hander who can play at the top or in the middle and keep wickets instead of rushing for Rahul's return. Rohit Sharma-led India are yet to announce the squad for the mega event, where they open their campaign on September 2 versus Pakistan. The seven-time winners are placed in Group A with Pakistan and Nepal.

Should nearly-fit KL Rahul be a part of India's XI in Asia Cup 2023? Ravi Shastri shares his take

On Tuesday (August 15), former Indian captain Virat Kohli took to his official Instagram account to slam reports which claimed that he will build&nbsp;a cricket pitch at his new farmhouse in Alibaug. It is to be noted that Kohli-Anushka Sharma's new farmhouse is under construction at the moment. Recently, they were also seen paying a visit to the farmhouse to check on the details of the construction.

While there were rumours that the star batter is investing in building a cricket pitch at the farmhouse, he has now dismissed all such claims. "Bachpan se jo akhbaar Padha hai, wo bhi fake news chaapne lage ab (The newspaper&nbsp;which I have read since childhood, has&nbsp;also started publishing fake news)," said Kohli on his Instagram story on Tuesday.

India will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele. The two heavyweights might also come face to face in the summit clash, which will be a first in the history of the tournament, to be held on September 17 in Colombo.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa opined on whether Kohli can break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 centuries. Kohli took his century tally to 76 after the West Indies tour, where he only played an ODI and two Tests. In this regard, Uthappa told TOI, "Virat (Kohli) doesn't really care about breaking records any more. We as people and fans are obsessed with it. Hardik Pandya-led India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) after an eight-wicket loss in the series finale. Opting to bat first, India rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 45-ball 61 to post 165 for 9. In reply, Rovman Powell &amp; Co. rode on opener Brandan King's 85 not out, Nicholas Pooran's 35-ball 47 and Shai Hope's 13-ball 22* to chase down the score in 18 overs. With this defeat, India conceded their first-ever T20I series. The Windies, on the other hand, gained their maiden bilateral series win over India, with a minimum of three games, since their 4-1 ODI series win at home in 2006.

A lot of fingers were raised on the Indian team management following HardiK &amp; Co.'s series loss. The Men in Blue conceded a 2-0 lead to the hosts before bouncing back and levelling the series at 2-2. However, they were outplayed in the final game as the series defeat exposed India's lack of batting depth and raised questions on Hardik's captaincy. Amid criticism from all corners, veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has come out in support of the T20I line-up.

<h2>'Easy to criticise the team on social media'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "There are plenty of positives from this T20I series. It is very easy to criticise the team on social media since they lost to a team that didn't qualify for the last T20 World Cup. They haven't qualified for the upcoming 50-over World Cup as well. I want to give a piece of information to you guys."

<h2>'They will definitely get better'</h2>

Ashwin further pointed out, "I am not talking, backing, or supporting anybody. All of these are secondary. As a youngster, if you are going to the West Indies, there will be some challenges. In all countries, there will be some innate secrets. The local players know these things more than visiting players. Especially if the players are young. When I went to West Indies, England, Australia, I had to learn various little things...these are first-time experience for me as a cricketer. So, youngsters would have learned a lot from this tour. They will definitely get better form here."

"Losing the the series 3-2 to West Indies...many of them are criticising and upset. It's okay and understandable. It's only fair, I guess. But we can see this loss from two perspectives. The players will get experience from this series," the 36-year-old concluded.

A second-stringed Indian team, under Jasprit Bumrah, have now left for Ireland where they will play three T20Is before the focus shifts entirely on the ODI format with the Asia Cup 2023, starting on August 30, and home ODI World Cup (in October-November) in the pipeline.

It is very easy to criticise on social media: R Ashwin defends Hardik Pandya-led India after WI T20Is loss

Prithvi Shaw has been on fire ever since he made his debut for&nbsp;Northamptonshire in the ongoing One-Day Cup in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;The right-hander made heads turn with a magnificent 244 against Somerset last week before making&nbsp;a blistering unbeaten century against Durham on Sunday (August 13). The Indian opener is the competition's top run-scorer, having amassed 429 runs so far at an average of 143.

Shaw, who last played for India in July 2021, will be aiming for a memorable run for Northamptonshire to make a strong statement and enter the Indian team at the earliest. His current form has impressed his new team's coach, John Sadler. Sadler called Shaw a 'superstar' and feels he is 'as good as' someone he has seen in '25 years'. Sadler spoke at length about Shaw after Northamptonshire's six-wicket win over Durham.&nbsp;"Humble is the perfect word to describe Prithvi Shaw. He's gracious and respectful, he's loved being a part of the team. We're loving having him here as well," he said.

In a recent interview, Shaw revealed that he doesn't have many friends and doesn't like new companions as well. However, he has certainly found an admirer in Sadler and it seems the Indian batter has perfectly fitted into the Northamptonshire setup.&nbsp;

Sadler further made a big statement and added, "His skill speaks for itself, he's a superstar. He's as good as I've seen in 25 years of playing this game. He's up there with the best in terms of ball striking. He genuinely wants to win games of cricket and has been a star in the dressing room."

Shaw has been doing exceptionally well in the domestic circuit and now has turned on the heat for Northamptonshire as well. At present, he isn't in India's scheme of things in the ODI as well as the T20I setup. However, a great run in the One-Day Cup can turn things around for him. 'He's a superstar, as good as I've seen in 25 years': Northamptonshire coach in awe of Prithvi Shaw

India lost the&nbsp;last match of the five-match T20I series&nbsp;against West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13) and conceded the series 2-3. This was India's first-ever bilateral series loss to the Windies, one comprising&nbsp;a minimum of three games, since their 1-4 loss in 2006 during the five ODIs in the Caribbean island. After the series loss, head coach Rahul Dravid admitted to India's lack of batting depth as they batted only till No. 7.

After the final T20I, Dravid said, "I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit. But I think going forward, we've got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that's certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting."

While Dravid's concerns were regarding the current T20I team, veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin reacted to it and came up with an interesting suggestion for Rohit Sharma-led Team India ahead of the upcoming home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

<h2>'You need someone like Shardul Thakur at No. 8'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "You don't want your tail to start so early, and that's why you need someone like Shardul Thakur to come and smash a few balls at No. 8. But you should play your best batters and bowlers to win a match. At the same time, if you needed 36 to win from 30 balls when you are six down, you should have the ability to close down such games as well. So, that is the conundrum that India will go into ahead of the World Cup. If they play Kuldeep and Chahal together, then it gets to a situation where Kuldeep has to bat at No. 8."

At present, India's ODI setup is eagerly waiting to know the fitness status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, two of their prominent middle-order batters, ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI WC at home. Currently, India have injury concerns with regard to the middle and lower order whereas they will also aim for more batting depth in the upcoming ICC event.

After the Windies tour, India is now gearing for three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, before the focus shifts to the 50-over Asia Cup, starting on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It will serve as a dress rehearsal for the ODI WC.

Ashwin reacts after Dravid shows concern for India's batting depth, shares suggestion for CWC '23

India lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies, in Florida, on Sunday (August 13). Having levelled the five T20Is after being 0-2 down, the Hardik Pandya-led Men in Blue were expected to continue with the winning momentum and clinch the series, however, Rovman Powell-led Windies were clinical in the final T20I to win by eight wickets.

This became India's first-ever five-match T20I series overall. Meanwhile, West Indies won their maiden bilateral series (minimum of three games) versus the opponent since 2006, when they defeated Rahul Dravid &amp; Co. 4-1 in the Caribbean island.

Thus, many fingers have been raised on Hardik's leadership whereas head coach Rahul Dravid is also being criticised left, right and centre.&nbsp;

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra also joined in and analysed Hardik's captaincy after the WI T20Is. Chopra pointed out how Axar Patel was underutilised throughout the series (did not bat in third and fourth T20I and completed his full quota of overs in only two games) and feels India played with only ten players.

<h2>'It almost seems like we played with 10 players'</h2>

On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Axar Patel was bowling the first over in the last match and in this match, Axar Patel bowled one over in total. The way Axar Patel has been used, we really don't know. It almost seems like we played with 10 players."

What will you do if Nicholas Pooran comes up the order? He came up the order when Arshdeep Singh dismissed Kyle Mayers once again. Axar Patel is not being used at all."

“You have made him (Mukesh) a totally old-ball bowler. Arshdeep Singh was bowled two overs in which he picked up a wicket but he didn't get overs after that. I have got no idea whatsoever about the bowling changes and I won't even try to explain,” a baffled&nbsp;Chopra added.

A lot has been said and written about Hardik's captaincy after India lost the five T20Is. While he claimed four wickets in the series, going wicketless in the last three games, his batting strike rate added to his criticism (striking at 110).

'India played with 10 players': Aakash Chopra baffled with Hardik Pandya's tactics after WI T20Is loss

From colossal failure in SA to WI T20I series loss: Team India's shocking LOWS in Rahul Dravid's tenure

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC '23) edition is not even two months away. The mega event will be held in India and, thus, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. are one of the favourites to lift the coveted title. After all, the last three editions have been won by the hosts. India, under MS Dhoni, started this trend in 2011 when the cricket-crazy country co-hosted the ODI World Cup (ODI WC) along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Back then, the Men in Blue trounced Sri Lanka in the summit clash by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai to lift the title.

Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni &amp; Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue.&nbsp;

Since injuries to Iyer and KL Rahul, who bats at No. 5, India have tried to give a consistent run to Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Nonetheless, the trio haven't cemented the spot. During the ongoing India-West Indies T20Is, another candidate's name sprung up.&nbsp;

Tilak Varma, who is yet to make an ODI debut, recently wore his first-ever international cap during the WI T20Is. Since then, he has returned with scores of 39, 51, 41 and 7*. The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming&nbsp;World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit?&nbsp;

<h2>MANY BACKING TILAK VARMA AS AN OPTION</h2>

In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7."

Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial."

<h2>WHY INDIA SHOULD NOT GO THE 2019 WAY AND SHOULD AVOID PAST MISTAKES</h2>

Without a doubt, Varma is one for the future (who can play varied roles with the bat and&nbsp;also be a handy part-time bowler). Just like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, etc., the 20-year-old Varma will also be a part of the national setup post the CWC '23 with India nearing a massive transition (with the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. in the twilight of their careers). However, his inclusion in the ODI setup with regard to the upcoming world event makes little to no sense. The Mumbai Indians (MI) star just has a handful of matches under his belt in the gruelling international circuit. While his start is surely promising, although in the shortest format, ODIs is a different ball game altogether. Look at Suryakumar. He is a T20I giant, however, admits to his woeful ODI returns (averaging a poor 24.33 in 26 games).

During the WI T20Is, Surya admitted to his 50-over woes and said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears." He added, "If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it."

Varma's T20I career has started in an identical fashion with that to his idol Suresh Raina (debut at 20, both taking two catches each in maiden outing, first-ever T20I fifty in losing cause). However, he hasn't even stepped into the ODI fore, a format ruled by his childhood hero. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni repeatedly emphasised on the need for players to be experienced enough&nbsp;to counter the pressure attached to a mega event. Back in August 2008, Dhoni&nbsp;said, "You have to give everyone enough chances, not just a few games."

Moreover, India have paid the price for regular shuffles in the batting order during their preparations in the last World Cup. We all remember how Ambati Rayudu's name was missing from the final 15 with Vijay Shankar -- having played only nine ODIs -- getting the nod. In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly.&nbsp;

Surely, Varma has an edge being a left-hander. However, India can always promote Ravindra Jadeja -- whose batting stokes are on the rise since 2018 -- in the 50-over showpiece event and, thus, not change their team combination drastically. Moreover, they also have Kishan who can bat at No. 4. Nonetheless, bringing Varma out of nowhere can jolt India's preparations. They have a rich pool of players but with the CWC '23 less than 60 days away, they cannot keep expanding their options. They have to shortlist a few and identify their No. 4 if Iyer, or even Rahul, continue to miss out due to injury concerns.

Recently, during an event, Rohit addressed&nbsp;India's&nbsp;struggle to book their No. 4 slot. He said, "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well - his numbers are really good. Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is honestly what has happened in the last 4-5 years. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there."

On Varma, Hitman stated, "He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing." The 36-year old pointed out, "In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period."

"That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India," he further opined.

There is some time before India finalise their Asia Cup squad, which will also give a major hint of their CWC '23 unit. It will be wise on their part if they go with a limited pool rather than just needlessly expanding it, pushing towards a downfall as experienced in 2019.

Explained | Why it is too late to consider Tilak Varma for India's No. 4 spot for CWC '23

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif feels Team India have not done well in recent ICC events due to 'internal issues'. It is to be noted that India have not won an ICC event since their historic triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Their last win in a multi-nation event came during the 2018 Asia Cup, in the UAE. At present, Rohit Sharma-led India are gearing up for the Asia Cup, in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which will be followed by the home ODI World Cup, in October-November.

On his YouTube channel, the former Pakistan keeper-batter and captain pointed out, "Virat Kohli had a direction and he wanted to win, but he was sacked. The team couldn't perform due to internal issues. They couldn't perform in ICC tournaments because, maybe, the captain didn't get the desired players. Or maybe he got, but they weren't used. Now, there are two big events -- Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the World Cup at home. Their team is still pretty good, they will get a no.4."

Their issue is the top-3 isn't performing how it used to. They could've brought back Shikhar Dhawan, you had made him captain less than a year ago during a tour. India have reached four finals and as many semi-finals in all ICC events since 2013, when they last clinched a mega title. Thus, they will be hungry to end the year with a historic ODI WC triumph on home soil and silence all their critics.

India couldn't perform in ICC tournaments due to internal issues, claims former Pakistan captain

Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed West Indies by nine wickets to win the fourth and penultimate T20I, in Florida, and level the five-match series on Saturday (August 12). Opting to bat first, Rovman Powell-led Windies piled up 178 for 8&nbsp;courtesy of Shai Hope's 45 and Shimron Hetmyer's 61. The total proved to be inadequate as Yashasvi Jaiswal (84 not out) and Shubman Gill (77) stitched a mammoth 165-run first-wicket stand to chase down the score in 17 overs.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh (3 for 38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 26) did the job for India to keep the Windies below the 200-run mark before Jaiswal-Gill stood tall. The opening duo ran hard between wickets and found the boundaries at regular intervals, smarting targetting the bowlers, to take India to a&nbsp;dominating win. After the clash, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim.

<h2>'They can be something as great as Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly opening the batting'</h2>

Uthappa said on Jio Cinema after the match, "Everyone who plays for India are equally capable and have equal ability but the way Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bat in tandem; they can bat for each other as well and they need to find that space. If they do, they are going to be a very dangerous pair for India in years to come. It will be a hot pair and they can be something as great as a Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly opening the batting."

He added, "They need to figure a few things out and if they do, they will do great things for India."

At the post-match presentation, Hardik lauded the opening duo and said, "There is no doubt in their (Gill and Jaiswal) skill set.&nbsp;Shubman and Yashasvi were brilliant. The way they ran in this heat ... and ... making sure they finished the job, it was very pleasing to see."

Jaiswal has been in superb form in the West Indies tour whereas Gill shrugged past his poor run of form, of late, and smacked an impressive 47-ball 77 laced with 3 fours and 5 sixes.

Ind vs WI: 'Gill-Jaiswal can become India's next Tendulkar-Ganguly' - Uthappa's BIG claim after 4th T20I

Indian captain Rohit Sharma admitted to Team India's No. 4 issues ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup, at home. According to Hitman, no player has stepped up and made the No. 4 spot his own after Yuvraj Singh. It is to be noted that India auditioned several batters at the No. 4 spot prior to the 2019 ODI World Cup as well. Post the 50-over showpiece event, Shreyas Iyer took over the mantle and achieved considerable success before his back injury resurfaced to dent his run. Iyer has been away from international cricket since early 2022.&nbsp;

To add to India's injury concerns, KL Rahul -- who bats at No. 5 -- is also out of action due to a hip injury, which he suffered during IPL 2023. In Rahul and Iyer's absence, Rohit-led India have backed the likes of Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. as their middle order remains a cause of worry ahead of the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off in India on October 05.

<h2>'No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time'</h2>

Talking to the reporters on the sidelines of a La Liga event, Rohit admitted to India's No. 4 curse and said, "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well - his numbers are really good."

He further opined, "Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is honestly what has happened in the last 4-5 years. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there."

Talking about Iyer, the 28-year-old has 805 runs in 20 matches at No. 4, at an average of 47.35, including two centuries and five fifties. Nonetheless, injuries to key players -- including Iyer -- have dented India's preparations ahead of two important 50-over mega-events. At present, the national side await the final fitness report of Rahul and Iyer before announcing their Asia Cup squad, which will be followed by the ODI WC.

The 36-year-old Rohit concluded by saying, "The percentage of injuries that have happened in the last 4-5 years is massive. When the players get injured or are not available, you try doing different things with different players - that is what I have to say about No. 4. Even before when I was not the captain, I was watching no? There were so many guys who came in and went out. But injuries kept them away or they were not available or someone lost form."

At present, Rohit-led India is gearing up for the Asia Cup, to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in August-September. The squad is expected to be announced sooner than later.

'After Yuvraj Singh, nobody has....': Rohit admits to India's No. 4 issues ahead of Asia Cup, ODI World Cup

Tilak Varma has made heads turn in the Indian cricket&nbsp;fraternity with a confident start to his international career during the ongoing five T20Is between India and West Indies. After three games, he has had scores of 39, 51, and 49* and has played his part with a lot of maturity, understanding the match situation. Thus, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha suggested his inclusion in the ODI setup. Now, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad has shared his take on Varma's addition to the ODI squad for the forthcoming home World Cup.

In an interaction with the news agency PTI, Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not.

<h2>'He is someone like Michael Bevan'</h2>

Prasad further made a big statement and said, "That’s the kind of role he can adapt to very quickly. He understands the situation well, he rotates strikes, he is hard to stop from scoring, and he can hold the innings together. He is someone like Michael Bevan."

"If you see his domestic cricket also, it’s close to 55 or 60, his average in the one-day format. He has got a pretty bright chance to get into the squad if Shreyas Iyer is found unfit," the former Indian cricketer added.

Prasad also acknowledged the role of Varma's IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians for the left-hander's incredible rise in the last two years. In this regard, he said: "I would say he has developed phenomenally in the last two years. He is a phenomenal cricketer, there’s no two ways about it. He played U19 for India. But credit should definitely go to Mumbai Indians for the way they have groomed him."

"The amount of opportunities he has got over the last two years, the way MI has shown faith in him, it’s tremendous. A winning team like Mumbai Indians showing faith will obviously boost the confidence of a young cricketer like him," he concluded.

Apart from Prasad, the likes of Wasim Jaffer and R Ashwin have also backed Varma to be added to India's squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. India will kick off their campaign in the showpiece event on October 08, versus Australia in Chennai, with the tournament opener to be held on October 05, in Ahmedabad, between defending champions England and New Zealand.

Should India rope in Tilak Varma for ODI World Cup? Former chief selector MSK Prasad shares his take

After guiding India to an impressive seven-wicket win over West Indies in the third T20I, in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), Suryakumar Yadav admitted to his ODI numbers being 'quite poor' as he continues to pile runs consistently in T20Is.&nbsp;"If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it," Surya told reporters after slamming a match-winning 41-ball 83 versus the Windies.&nbsp;

Now, former Indian opener-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra, has opened up on Surya's ODI numbers and cited Rohit Sharma's late bloom in Tests, something which might inspire&nbsp;the former. On his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Surya has candidly, honestly and openly accepted that his ODI record is really bad, it is nothing to be ashamed of, there is nothing to hide as well, and he already knows what everyone is saying."

"He also said that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have told him that he has to understand the format a little more. He is not the only one and he is not the first player as well who is taking a little time to shift from one format to the other," he further asserted.

<h2>'Rohit Sharma has fallen in love with Test cricket'</h2>

Chopra then shifted focus to the current Indian captain Rohit and his initial struggles in Tests before his resurgence&nbsp;in late 2019. "If you look at Rohit Sharma when he was playing in the middle-order in the initial phase of his career, you left he was not comfortable with the format. He used to bat well and then play a bad shot. People used to wonder why because everything was going well and then came the bad shot. This was at the start of his Test career. After he began opening, he understood the pulse of the format. Now it feels like Rohit has fallen in love with Test cricket. He needed some time to understand the pulse of the other format," Chopra added.

Prior to becoming the Indian opener in late 2019, Rohit struggled in the red-ball format due to inconsistency and injuries. However, he has turned it around&nbsp;since batting up the order. He has scored seven tons as an opener, with a best of 212, out of his ten centuries overall.&nbsp;

Thus, the former Indian cricketer-turned-expert has suggested Surya take a leaf from Rohit's book and give himself some time in the ODI format in order to understand the pulse of the game and then explode. It is to be noted that the right-hander has only managed&nbsp;511 runs -- with two fifties -- at an average of&nbsp;24.33 in 26 ODIs. It will be interesting to see if he makes the cut in India's Asia Cup squad, and later in the ODI World Cup line-up. He has been exceptional as a T20I batter, averaging over 45, but his ODI numbers need significant improvement.

He has been exceptional as a T20I batter, averaging over 45, but his ODI numbers need significant improvement. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Aakash Chopra cites Rohit Sharma's initial Test struggles to decode Suryakumar Yadav's ODI woes

After keeping India's hopes alive in the five-match T20Is with a blistering 83 in the third game, in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), Suryakumar Yadav admitted to his ODI struggles. While the swashbuckling right-hander has been in top form in the shortest format of the game since his international debut, the same cannot be said about his ODI numbers. In 26 ODIs, Surya averages a poor 24.33, having managed only 511 runs with two fifties.

<h2>'ODIs&nbsp;one of the most challenging formats for me'</h2>

Following Hardik Pandya-led India's easy win in the third T20I versus West Indies, Player of the Match Surya said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears. If too many wickets fall early on, you need to start off with a Test cricket-like approach. Then you go at run-a-ball and then take the T20 approach."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
"Right now, I'm trying to apply what the team management has told me about ODI cricket. I'm trying to take my time and do what the team requires of me. I'll try to keep the faith that the team has shown in me. In T20 cricket, we know what to do because we play so much of it. You just need to go and express your game," the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter stated.

We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it." Revealing the pep talk with regular captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid, SKY said, "Rohit and Rahul bhai have told me - this is not a format that you play a lot, you need to practice a bit on what can be done for the team. We want you to play 45 to 50 balls. That's the sign from the team management, now that's on me how I want to play my game if I'm batting in the last 15-18 overs. Now, that's in my hand how to make use of this opportunity. I need to bat as per the team requirement."

In KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer's absence, Surya has been given a long rope in India's middle-order in the ODI line-up. However, he has failed to get going and is yet to cement his spot. With India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, which commences later this month, to be announced soon, it will be interesting to see if SKY makes the cut. The 50-over Asia Cup will be followed by the ODI World Cup, later this year in India, thus, SKY needs to be consistent in the shorter format to remain regular.

Talking about the India-West Indies ongoing T20Is, Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 28), SKY (44-ball 83, laced with 10 fours and 4 sixes) and Tilak Verma (49 not out) starred in India's win as they now trail the hosts 1-2. The final two games will be held in Florida, USA over&nbsp;the weekend.

My ODI numbers are quite poor: Suryakumar admits to 50-over struggles after blistering 83 in 3rd T20I vs WI

Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels Rohit Sharma-led India is the most balanced side at home. Hussain feels the Indian team outperforms every visiting line-up in the purest format of the game due to their perfect blend of youth and experience while playing in home conditions. It is to be noted that the Indian team has not lost a Test series on home soil since late 2012, when they lost 1-2 to England in four Tests.

<h2>'The balance of their side at home is just wonderful'</h2>

Speaking on the ICC Review, Hussain said, "They are brilliant at home...and the balance of their side at home is just wonderful. They've got senior players like Rohit and obviously Virat (Kohli) and they are just world class players and they've got youngsters coming in, like Shubman (Gill), who's going to be a superstar."

Hussain further opined that the Indian team will become a more formidable unit once Jasprit Bumrah achieves full fitness. The wily Indian speedster has been out of cricketing action since September 2022. He is set to make his much-awaited national comeback during India's three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, later this month.

In this regard, Hussain concluded, "If Jasprit (Bumrah) can come back as well, one of the great multi-format bowlers there is at the moment, if not the best, when fit. So, they've got those senior players and youngsters, and with the ball in India, those three all-rounders, and they are genuine all rounders in India - Axar (Patel), (Ravindra) Jadeja and (Ravichandran) Ashwin. That, for me, is a really balanced side because then you've got a No.7."

At present, India hold the No. 1 spot in ICC Test Rankings. They featured in the WTC final in both the cycles, since its inception in late 2019, but failed to lift the coveted Test mace, having lost the summit clash to New Zealand and Australia, respectively.

Currently, India are preparing hard for the forthcoming ODI World Cup, to be held in India in October-November. Their next Test assignment will be post the ODI WC, i.e. a two-match Test series versus hosts South Africa in December.

India most balanced Test side at home: Former England captain Nasser Hussain lauds Rohit Sharma & Co.

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh isn't much optimistic of Team India's chances in the forthcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 5 between England and New Zealand. The 2011 ODI World Cup winner raised his concerns over India's unprepared middle order and feels if the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are not fit in time, India might struggle in the marquee tournament, especially in high-pressure games.

<h2>'I see a lot of concerns'</h2>

Yuvraj said on the&nbsp;Cricket Basu YouTube&nbsp;channel, "I can be a patriot and say 'India will win because I am an Indian.' But I see a lot of concerns in the Indian middle order because of injuries. If those concerns are not resolved, we will struggle, especially in pressure games. Don't experiment in pressure games. The skill work to bat in the middle order is very different from that of an opener. Is there anybody there (in the team management) who is working around the guys that will be playing in the middle order? That's the question mark – the middle order is not ready, so someone will have to make them ready."

Yuvraj emphasised on the role of middle-order batters and added, "If your openers are out early, you need to build a partnership. (Middle order) batsmen are not simply flamboyant stroke-makers that occupy the crease and start hitting. He has to absorb pressure, leave a few balls, and create a partnership. It's a difficult job, somebody has to be experienced over there."

The 41-year-old former cricketer was one of the top performers for India in the CWC '11 edition, held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Under MS Dhoni, India won the final beating Sri Lanka by six wickets and Yuvraj ended as the Player-of-the-Tournament with 362 runs and 15 scalps overall.&nbsp;

Talking about Rohit-led India, the Men in Blue are running against time to finalise their squad for the mega event, with Rahul and Iyer on the cusp of full recovery. India will open their campaign in the home ODI WC versus five-time winners Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

'I can be a patriot and say 'India will win' but...: Yuvraj Singh on Rohit Sharma & Co.'s chances in CWC '23

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has urged Sanju Samson to make the most of his chances in Team India's ongoing five T20Is versus West Indies, in the Caribbean. Samson, after an impressive 41-ball 51 in the ODI series decider, has not managed to come up with any&nbsp;significant contribution when batting lower down the order in the T20I series. So far, he has managed only a solitary fifty in 19 T20I innings&nbsp;and, hence, he needs to step up to cement his spot in the shortest format of the game. Given that the 2024 T20 World Cup will be held in West Indies and USA, the ongoing five T20Is is an ideal series for him to perform or perish.

After Samson's ordinary runs in the opening two games, where he managed 12 (12) and 7 (7), former Indian batter Chopra said on his Youtube channel, "Sanju Samson - don't waste your chance. If you waste your chance, you will remember it later. It is not that if Ishan Kishan goes from the top, Sanju cannot go from below. Both can go and Jitesh Sharma can come."

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper has been in and out for the national side ever since his international debut in 2015. While in the recent years, he is easily among the top 20 players of the country, Samson has failed to make the cut in the playing XI on most occasions, during the presence of India's white-ball regulars. Hence, the upcoming months hold great significance for him with the ODI World Cup only few months away, to be held in India in October-November, and the T20 World Cup slated to take place early next year.&nbsp;

Thus, some consistent performances can certainly help Samson's case going forward. For now, he will be eager to turn the tides in the ongoing T20Is versus Rovman Powell-led West Indies. At present, India trail the home side 0-2 and have to win the third match, on Tuesday (August 08) in Guyana, to keep the series alive.

Sanju Samson, don't waste your chance: Former Indian opener urges star batter to score big in WI T20Is

Hardik Pandya-led India have their&nbsp;task cut out to keep the five-match T20I series alive after losing the first two games to hosts West Indies. Ahead of the third T20I, to be held in Guyana on Tuesday (August 08), former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter, Kamran Akmal, schooled Indian star Sanju Samson. After an impressive 41-ball 51 in the third and final ODI, Samson has not got going in the T20Is. He has managed 12 (12) and 7 (7) so far and, thus, the Pakistani veteran spoke at length on Samson's disappointing runs in the opening two games.&nbsp;

Samson was expected to finish off the proceedings for India in the series opener, coming out at No. 6 in a chase of 150, but he fell for a run-a-ball 12. In the following game, he couldn't provide any late impetus to the Indian innings and fell for 7 as the visitors only managed 152/7, losing by two wickets. Akmal opined on Samson's lack of maturity in dealing with consequential moments and said on his Youtube channel,&nbsp;"It was disappointing to see Sanju Samson get out this way."

'He should be more mature': Former Pak wicketkeeper offers advice to Indian star amid struggles in WI T20Is

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin feels India are preparing Sanju Samson as a backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who are closing in on full fitness ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue raised a lot of eyebrows for their constant experiments in the recent ODIs versus hosts West Indies.&nbsp;They shuffled their batting order and also rested the likes of regular skipper Rohit and Virat Kohli. With Rahul and Iyer's return still not confirmed, they even tried Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the middle. Thus, Ashwin commented on the batting experiments and feels India are preparing backups until Rahul and Iyer return.&nbsp;

<h2>'They are keeping different strategies...'</h2>

Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "Both (KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer) of them are coming out of injuries. I think they will return during the Asia Cup only. But who is the backup for either of them? If one of them is unable to return before the World Cup, and that's why they have tried out Sanju Samson. They also tried Axar Patel at No. 4. I think they are keeping different strategies for T20 and ODI formats."

Talking about Samson, the right-hander failed to get going in the rain-hit second and penultimate ODI but slammed an impressive 41-ball 51 in the series decider, where Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. won by 200 runs. However, Samson is yet to get going in the ongoing five T20Is.

Ashwin further commented on Tilak Verma, who made his India debut during the ongoing T20Is, in the Caribbean island. While India have lost two games on the trot, Tilak has been India's standout performer with the bat with scores of 39 (21) and 51 (41). On the Mumbai Indians' (MI) star batter, the 36-year-old Ashwin stated,&nbsp;"The emergence of Tilka Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperious touch even on that slow pitch in the first T20I. His batting style looked very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot of Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull."

He added, "Generally, Indian batters won't set up to play the pull shot. They will find the answer later as they will have all the other shots. Pull shot is something they will develop. But his game looks like has a natural pull shot and sends the ball outside the boundary rope like an Australian."

Talking about India's preparations for the forthcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, in October-November, they are trying different combinations and giving varied roles to the available players whereas Rahul and Iyer are working hard to get fully fit and stage a comeback.&nbsp;

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin feels India are preparing Sanju Samson as a backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who are closing in on full fitness ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue raised a lot of eyebrows for their constant experiments in the recent ODIs versus hosts West Indies. They shuffled their batting order and also rested the likes of regular skipper Rohit and Virat Kohli. With Rahul and Iyer's return still not confirmed, they even tried Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the middle. Thus, Ashwin commented on the batting experiments and feels India are preparing backups until Rahul and Iyer return. 'They are keeping different strategies...' India preparing Sanju Samson as backup for KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer for ODI World Cup, opines R Ashwin

After winning the Test and ODI series, India have lost two straight T20Is to hosts West Indies in the ongoing five-match series. On Sunday (August 06), Hardik Pandya-led India faced West Indies, in Guyana, for the second T20I and lost by two wickets in defence of 152/7.

Opting to bat first, India rode on Tilak Verma's maiden half century (51) but failed to defend the score despite reducing the home side to 129 for 8, after which they were well-placed at 126 for 4. Hardik claimed three scalps whereas Yuzvendra Chahal picked two wickets, but India conceded the match due to late hits from Alzarri Joseph-Akeal Hossain.

After yet another loss, former Team India pacer Venkatesh Prasad -- who remains vocal on Indian cricket on social media platforms -- slammed the national side for 'lack of intensity' and 'hunger'.

<h2>'After IPL started,&nbsp;we haven't won a T20 World Cup&nbsp;'</h2>

On the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Prasad wrote, "Very, very ordinary. No point in brushing it aside. After the 2007 T20 World Cup, IPL started and we haven't won a T20 World Cup in 7 attempts since, making only 1 final. The intensity and hunger to win needs to be far more."

"Yesterday after Yuzi took 2 wickets in the 16th over and got India back into the game in what was his third over and West Indies 8th down and he didn't bowl again and No 9 and 10 for WI found the pacers easy to handle. Should be smarter at these moments then just doing textbook stuff," he mentioned.

Ind vs WI, 2nd T20I: Former pacer Venkatesh Prasad rips apart Team India for 'lack of 'intensity'

Rohit Sharma-led India is gearing up for the forthcoming home ODI World Cup (ODI WC), which will kick off early October. The Men in Blue will be sweating it out in the 22-yard cricket strip to win the title after 12 years. Back in the 2011 edition, the MS Dhoni-led Indian team went past several heavyweights to lift the coveted trophy after a gap of 28 years and become the first side&nbsp;to clinch a home 50-over WC.

Thus, Rohit &amp; Co. will have their task cut out to replicate Dhoni-led India's 12-year-old feat. As Hitman recently attended one of the legs of the World Cup Trophy Tour, in Barbados, the 36-year-old recalled some bittersweet memories from the 2011 edition, when he wasn't part of the triumphant Indian squad.&nbsp;

Rohit recalled India's contrasting runs in 2003 and 2007 edition and said, "In 2003, India played really well up until the finals. You know, Sachin Tendulkar was amazing with the bat, scored so many runs. And then comes the 2007 World Cup where we didn't have a great time, and didn't even qualify after the league stage, so that was quite unfortunate."

<h2>'I decided I was not going to watch the World Cup, but again...'</h2>

Sharing his memories from the 2011 edition, Rohit opined, "2011 was a memorable one for all of us, I remember watching it from home, every single match, every single ball which was being bowled and that was being played. There were two kinds of emotions, one was obviously I was not a part of it, so I was a little disappointed. I decided I was not going to watch the World Cup, but again, the second memory I remember was that India was playing so well, the quarter-finals onwards."

"You know, the big quarter-final was against Australia. I know how the pressure is on all these players when playing these games. I can only imagine the pressure that each player must have gone through at that time, and then the semi-finals against Australia. It was a brilliant finish by Yuvi and Raina at the end," he added.

Rohit, who was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup win, didn't make it to the 2011 ODI WC squad. Back then, India trusted Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan to bolster the middle and lower-order but Hitman failed to make the cut owing to his inconsistency.

During the 2011 edition, India beat teams such as Australia, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka (in the final), etc. to win the trophy. In this year's tournament, Rohit &amp; Co. will open their campaign versus Australia, in Chennai, on October 08 and aim to go the distance and win the championship&nbsp;once again, after 2011, and end their ten-year-long ICC title drought.

Decided not to watch 2011 ODI World Cup: Indian captain Rohit Sharma shares bittersweet memories

Former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis recalled his playing days and revealed that the then Pakistan team used to get under pressure facing India in ODI World Cup games, and added that&nbsp;he believes the Babar Azam-led Men in Green have enough match-winners and can shine bright in the forthcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India later this year. Both India and Pakistan are set to lock horns in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, which commences on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and will meet once again in the 50-over World Cup.

<h2>'We used to choke against India in World Cups'</h2>

Waqar, a legend of the game who ended with a total of 789 wickets, admitted that during World Cups, the national side used to get bogged down versus India.&nbsp;"In our times, the pressure wasn't that of a big concern as what it seems right now. The lesser you play against a team, that too against a big team - so whenever you'll play them, especially if it is Pakistan and India, the pressure would be immense and tripled. Pressure is always high, but maybe in our times, it was comparatively lesser because we used to play lots of cricket in my early days. But then again, in World Cup, we used to choke against India. Nonetheless, as I said, players these days are handling the pressure definitely better. These match-winners, which I mentioned earlier, they'll win us the game," Waqar told&nbsp;Cricket Pakistan.

The former Pakistan skipper added, "Pakistan team have handled pressure in a better way in the recent past. In my opinion, it doesn't matter wherever you play, irrespective of whether in India or Pakistan, if you have your process in check and are executing your skills and plans sufficiently well, so I don't think we have any issue. We have match-winners, we have individuals that can win you matches single-handedly, including Babar himself, Shaheen - Fakhar can do wonders, then, of course, we have seen Imam playing great innings, so all-in-all, Pakistan has all the resources definitely, now it's just the matter of putting things together and handling pressure."

Pakistan have never beaten India in the ODI WC history. India lead the Men in Green 7-0 and it will be interesting to see if Pakistan manage to open their account this time around. To date, Babar-led side's participation in the upcoming World Cup is subject to government clearance. The ODI WC is set to commence on October 05 in Ahmedabad with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand. Pakistan will open their campaign versus Netherlands on October 06 in Hyderabad.&nbsp;

'Pakistan used to choke against India': Waqar Younis recalls playing days, backs Babar & Co. for 2023 ODI WC

Team India is now gearing up for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. While the Hardik Pandya-led India is involved in the five T20Is versus West Indies, in the Caribbean island, the ODI regulars are now focused on the continental showpiece event as it will be an ideal dress rehearsal before the home ODI World Cup, in October-November. Before the Asia Cup, Jasprit Bumrah was announced fit and has been named the captain for the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, to be held later this month. Now, as per a report in the Times of India, another batter is fit.

KL Rahul, star keeper-batter, is now fit and ready for Asia Cup duties. The stylish batter has been out of cricketing action since his injury in the latter half of IPL 2023. Since then, he missed India's WTC final -- versus Australia -- and the ongoing West Indies tour. With him being India's No. 5 and a reliable keeper, his return will be a massive boost for the Men in Blue.&nbsp;

Rahul has been sharing his fitness updates on social media platforms in the last few days, where he can be seen batting and keeping wickets at the nets. "The coaches and medical experts at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore are satisfied with Rahul's progress/recovery. He will be available for selection for the Asia Cup," a reliable source said.

Rahul suffered a thigh injury during the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s run in IPL 2023, where they finished fourth after losing in the eliminator to Mumbai Indians (MI). Apart from Rahul, Shreyas Iyer is also fighting hard to regain full fitness, however, he is still away from being in contention for the Asia Cup. As per the same report in the TOI, Iyer is likely to be unavailable and can be out of the continental tournament with a back problem that persists despite surgery.

While Bumrah, and Prasidh Krishna, are set to make a comeback in the Ireland T20Is and there are strong reports of Rahul also recovering soon. Thus, Indian fans will hope for the trio to get some game time under their belt before the ODI World Cup and also wish for Iyer's speedy return.

The stylish batter has been out of cricketing action since his injury in the latter half of IPL 2023. Since then, he missed India's WTC final -- versus Australia -- and the ongoing West Indies tour. With him being India's No. 5 and a reliable keeper, his return will be a massive boost for the Men in Blue.
