Team India announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, at home, starting on October 5. From India's current 18-man Asia Cup squad, including a reserve player, the trio of Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been dropped as the rest 15 made the cut in the final squad. It is to be noted that all the teams have until September 28 to make any changes to the squad. Thus, some late changes might take place.&nbsp;

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named India's final 15 in a press conference along with captain Rohit Sharma in Sri Lanka, the duo took some questions from the reporters.

Sympathising with the dropped players, Rohit said, "There are no surprises and you can only get 15 in. Some of the guys will be disappointed. I have gone through it and I know how it feels. We have good all-round options and this is the best 15 we could get."

It is to be noted that Rohit played his first 50-over World Cup in 2015 as he was left out of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious squad from the 2011 edition. Back in 2011, when India co-hosted the mega event with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Hitman was overlooked as his competitors Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina got a look-in.

However, Rohit revamped in style and had a decent run in 2015 whereas came to his best in the 2019 edition, ending as the highest run-getter (648 runs with five centuries) in England and Wales. Thus, the 36-year-old has gone through a lot of ups and downs and will surely lend a supporting hand to the players who failed to make the cut.

Rohit insisted that India are yet to find their right combination and added, "I have not thought about plans yet. The problem of plenty is a good problem to have. We have to see who is in form and who our opposition is. We need to see what the best possible combination could be. If someone misses out, then so be it. This keeps happening. You have to make tough calls for the team."

India will open their campaign versus Australia in Chennai&nbsp;on October 8 whereas the CWC 2023 opener will be held on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

At present, the Men in Blue are gearing up for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 edition, where they will take on Pakistan on Sunday (September 10).&nbsp;

I know how it feels: Rohit Sharma sympathises with dropped players after India name 15-man squad for CWC '23

Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri slammed Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. for their sloppy fielding effort in their last group stage match versus Nepal, in Kandy, during the Asia Cup 2023 edition on Monday (September 04). After their tournament-opener versus Pakistan ended with rain having the final say&nbsp;on September 02 (Saturday), India faced Nepal for the first time ever during the final game of Group A. While India won by ten wickets&nbsp;in a rain-marred contest, their bowlers were stretched for a considerable period with India's fielding being below-par.

Thus, during the match, Shastri -- the former cricketer who is part of the commentary panel in Asia Cup 2023 -- criticised India as they dropped three easy catches at the beginning of the game and remained sloppy with overthrows and misfields.&nbsp;

<h2>'It took those three catches to wake them up'</h2>

"The approach, at the very beginning, those catches going down. The body language seemed flat. It took those three catches to wake them up. By that time their openers were going well, Jadeja came and stemmed the rot," Shastri said on Star Sports.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli, and Ishan Kishan dropped easy catches in the initial overs after India asked Nepal to bat first. As a result, Nepal openers Aasif Sheikh (58) and Kushal Bhurtel (38) stitched an impressive 66-run opening stand. While Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 38) and Shardul Thakur dented Nepal's progress and reduced them to 144 for 6, their lower order propelled them to 230 all-out in 48.2 overs.

Shastri further opined, "Put in to bat which had a little bit of moisture and had something for the fast bowlers, I think Nepal did an outstanding job. They will take that score. They went after the bowling. They hit those sixes. Immediately 50 was on the board and the confidence was rubbed off on the middle-order and the lower order. This showed in the last five overs that showed there. It's great." He added, "From Nepal's point of view, just think of the crowd that came here. The first time the Indian crowd has been outnumbered."

Eventually, India got a revised target of 145 in 23 overs and chased it down without dropping much sweat courtesy of captain Rohit's unbeaten 74 and Shubman Gill giving him good support with a fine 67 not out. India have managed to enter the Super Four -- where they will open their campaign versus Pakistan on September 10 -- but they have their task cut out in the field.&nbsp;

The body language seemed flat: Ravi Shastri slams Team India for sloppy fielding vs Nepal in Asia Cup tie

Ravindra Jadeja added another feather to his illustrious hat during India's group stage face-off with Nepal in match 5 of Asia Cup 2023, on Monday (September 04) in Kandy. After India's opening game versus Pakistan&nbsp;was washed out due to rain, they have now locked horns with the lowly-ranked and inexperienced Nepal where Jadeja ended with 3 for 40 in his ten overs after India opted to bowl first.&nbsp;

With three key wickets, Jadeja equalled former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan to become India's joint-most successful bowler in Asia Cup ODIs. Both the all-rounders have 22 wickets apiece and 34-year-old Jadeja will certainly look to add to his tally in the Super Four, should India proceed further with a win over Nepal on Monday evening.

Most wickets for India in Asia Cup ODIs

Ravindra Jadeja: 22 in 15 innings (24.5 Avg)*
Irfan Pathan: 22 in 12 innings (27.5 Avg)
Sachin Tendulkar: 17 in 15 innings (21.4 Avg)
Kapil Dev: 15 in 7 innings (13 Avg)

Jadeja removed the likes of Bhim Shirki, captain Rohit Paudel and Kushal Malla to dent Nepal's innings after they were off to a fine start courtesy of openers Aasif Sheikh (58) and Kusal Bhurtel (38). Jaddu ended as India's best bowler of the evening whereas Mohammed Siraj also accounted for 3 for 61.&nbsp;

For India, they have a task in hand to chase down 231 versus Nepal, who played fearlessly to put on a decent total on the board. The former ODI champions need a win to enter the Super Four, where they will then lock horns with Pakistan on September 10 (Sunday) in Colombo.

Ind vs Nep: Ravindra Jadeja equals Irfan Pathan to become India's leading wicket-taker in Asia Cup ODIs

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif stated that Pakistan pacers will feel the heat when they come up against Virat Kohli in the forthcoming India-Pakistan group-stage clash in the Asia Cup. The continental tournament got underway on Wednesday (August 30) in Multan, Pakistan with Babar Azam &amp; Co. locking horns with Nepal. The seven-time winners India will kick off their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Sri Lanka, with the competition being jointly held by the two Asian giants.

Ahead of Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.'s tournament-opener versus their Asian neighbours, Kaif recalled Kohli's masterclass (82 not out) during the last Indo-Pak battle which took place during the initial stage of the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia. Back then, India was on the mat&nbsp;chasing 160 at the MCG, Melbourne and struggling at 31 for 4 before a match-winning 113-run fifth-wicket stand between Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40) revived the run-chase. In the end overs, the former captain took over to guide his side to a memorable four-wicket win on a last-ball thriller.&nbsp;

<h2>'Pakistan&nbsp;will be wary of Virat Kohli and know what a big wicket he is'</h2>

Thus, Kaif feels Kohli will put some pressure on the Shaheen Afridi-led Pakistani pacers in the upcoming clash in Kandy. Speaking to Star Sports, he said, "Kohli's performance in Australia at the T20 World Cup, against Pakistan, he played magnificently. And he is a brilliant batsman when it comes to playing against Pakistan. He takes full responsibility and is a chase master. The form that he had in that World Cup was because of his performances in the Asia Cup (2022), starting from that century he hit against Afghanistan."

He further opined, "Those memories will still linger in the minds of the Pakistani bowlers. They will be wary of Kohli and know what a big wicket he is. They will know that if they get him out, the match becomes a lot easier. But the form he is in, the pressure will always be on the bowlers.

"And the fact that he has played the Pakistani bowlers in their last match at the T20 World Cup, he will know how every Pakistani bowler bowls, whether it is Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, or Haris Rauf. Kohli will know how to play them, he will know what their strengths and weaknesses are. Virat Kohli will be very dangerous against Pakistan," Kaif added.

Kohli has a superb record versus the Men in Green. In the shorter format, the 34-year-old has 536 runs in 13 games at an&nbsp;average of&nbsp;55.11, including five tons and eight half-centuries.&nbsp;

India, Pakistan and Nepal are placed in Pool A whereas Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in the other group in the 50-over competition. The current edition is an ideal dress rehearsal for all the Asian teams, barring Nepal, with&nbsp;the ODI World Cup&nbsp;starting on October 05 in India.

Kohli's 82* in T20 World Cup will linger in minds of Pakistan players, feels Kaif ahead of Asia Cup clash

Veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma opined on the difference in captaincy between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni and stated that the latter had groomed Indian bowlers before he stepped aside as the Test captain and handed over the reins to Kohli. Under Dhoni, India won 27 out of 60 Tests and led the side to the No. 1 ranking for the first time in late 2009. Kohli then went on to take the mantle forward and led exceptionally well to end with 40 wins from 68 Tests, the most by any Indian skipper. Recently, Ishant pointed out that while Kohli was very aggressive and defined the roles of every bowler, he was given a well-groomed bowling unit by his predecessor.

<h2>'What Dhoni did was groom the bowlers and left them with Virat'</h2>

Speaking to JioCinema, Ishant said, "He was the best. When Virat was captain, bowling was complete. When we were playing under Mahi&nbsp;bhai, we were in a transition phase. At that time, Shami and Umesh were new, and only I was there. Everyone else would rotate. Bhuvi was also new. There is no match for Mahi&nbsp;bhai&nbsp;as a communicator. But what he did was groom the bowlers and leave them with Virat. Shami and Umesh, over time, became different bowlers and then Jasprit came in. So, he got a complete package. The best thing he did was identify everyone’s traits, that he used to talk about one thing with one person and then Iet them be."

Ishant then shifted focus to Kohli as a Test captain and lauded the star batter's approach. "First thing, he was aggressive. If you’re bowling with the new ball, you can concede 25 runs in five overs as long as you take two wickets. The important thing was that he gave everyone defined roles. He used to tell me, ‘You have played enough matches, it’s now time for you to step up. Don’t bowl thinking you have to bowl in a particular area, now you have to find ways of getting wickets’. He went to Shami and said, ‘I know you can take wickets, but now I need you to bowl consistently. That you can bowl three overs as maidens’. He went to Bumrah and said, ‘This is your debut, you do what you do, but consistency is most important in Test cricket’. After 2021, I realised he wanted all of us to think out of the box," the 34-year-old added.

Under Dhoni, India was a dominant Test side at home but had only limited success overseas (such as a Test series win in New Zealand, and a 1-1 series draw versus hosts South Africa).&nbsp;Kohli-led national side remained lethal in familiar conditions and registered some famous wins while on the road (for instance, the 2-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph versus Australia in Australia, an unassailable 2-1 series lead versus England in the 2021 English summer, etc).

Dhoni groomed them and handed over to Kohli: Ishant Sharma on smooth transition of Indian bowlers

Team India is set to kick off their campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The continental tournament gets underway on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan as the multi-nation competition will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The Asia Cup is vital for India as it will be followed by the home ODI World Cup 2023 and, hence, it provides a&nbsp;great chance for the Men in Blue to finalise their team combination. The return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna has also bolstered India's squad.&nbsp;

On Tuesday (August 30), head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that Rahul will be missing the first two games in the Asia Cup, as a precaution due to a niggle, whereas Iyer is fully fit. On the other hand, Bumrah will also mark his return to the 50-over format after a long gap. He recently made his international return during the Ireland T20Is and will now prepare for the forthcoming ODI World Cup,&nbsp;starting&nbsp;on October 05 in Ahmedabad, India. Before India's Asia Cup opener, Dravid confirmed that India will 'ease Bumrah into the scheme of things slowly'.

"It is great to have them back. Jasprit is someone who we have missed a lot, over the last two years he has not played too much games," Dravid said while addressing the press conference on Tuesday. "We will ease him into it slowly. It was nice for him to get those overs in the tour of Ireland. We have a whole month to build him up before the World Cup. It gives us more options in the pace bowling department," Dravid added.

Bumrah is extremely vital to India's plans for October-November's home ODI World Cup. His form and fitness will be essential and, hence, will be closely monitored throughout the continental tournament. The 29-year-old made a strong statement in the Ireland T20Is, early this month. Leading the side, he guided a second-stringed India to a 2-0 series win and ended with the Player-of-the-Series award with four scalps in two games, with the finale being a complete washout.

We will ease him into it slowly: Rahul Dravid on Jasprit Bumrah as pacer set for 50-over return in Asia Cup

Virat Kohli is set to feature in his fourth ODI World Cup when the upcoming 2023 edition kicks off on October 5 in India. At 34, Kohli will leave no stone unturned to help India end their ten-year-long ICC title drought and win the 50-over showpiece event. It is to be noted that India last won the ODI World Cup when the ICC event was co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Thus, the home side will be eager to replicate their 2011 heroics. Kohli, who was part of the MS Dhoni-led victorious side in 2011, will aim to bring his experience into play and help Rohit Sharma and Co.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, which starts on August 30 (Wednesday), and will soon be followed by the CWC 2023, Kohli recalled the memories from the 2011 edition and claimed that winning the 50-over championship is his career's highlight.&nbsp;

<h2>'It was stuff from dreams'</h2>

In an event in Bengaluru, Kohli was quoted as saying by PTI, "My career highlight is obviously winning the World Cup in 2011. I was 23 at the time, and I probably didn't understand the magnitude of it. But now at 34, and has played many World Cups, which we haven't been able to win, So, I understand the emotions of all the senior players (in 2011)."

"All the more for Sachin Tendulkar, as it was his last World Cup. He had already played many World Cups by then and to win it in Mumbai, his hometown, was very special for him. I mean, it was stuff from dreams," the former captain opined.

Recalling his entire experience, Kohli said, "I remember the amount of pressure there was on all the players when we were travelling. Thankfully, there was no social media back then. It would have been a nightmare, honestly. But through the airports, it was always just one thing -- we need to win the Cup."

Kohli had a decent run in his first-ever World Cup in 2011. He ended with 282 runs -- including a century and a vital fifty -- and made a crucial 34 in the final where India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets on April 2 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Back then, Dhoni &amp; Co. beat teams such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia, etc. to win the coveted title for the second time in Indian cricket's history.

Talking about the CWC '23 edition, Rohit-led India will open their campaign on October 08 in Chennai where they face Australia. They will go hard for their third 50-over mega title and Kohli will be desperate to lead the batting department with aplomb. The 34-year-old, with over 25,000 international runs in 501 games, along with 76 hundreds, will be the go-to batter for the Men in Blue.

My career highlight is winning the 2011 ODI World Cup, says Virat Kohli ahead of Asia Cup, CWC '23

Team India, under Rohit Sharma, is set to kick off their Asia Cup 2023 campaign on September 02 when they face arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The continental tournament gets underway on Wednesday (August 30) with co-hosts Pakistan locking horns with Nepal in Multan. After the Asia Cup, to be held in the ODI format, the 50-over World Cup will take place, in India, starting on October 05.

Prior to the Asia Cup and CWC '23, former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar heaped praise on Virat Kohli and pointed out where he becomes 'valuable' for Rohit &amp; Co.&nbsp;

<h2>'I expect Virat to have a great World Cup'</h2>

Speaking to&nbsp;Star Sports&nbsp;in the lead-up to the 50-over Asia Cup, Manjrekar was optimistic of Kohli having a great run in the upcoming World Cup.&nbsp;"Great player who has had a great journey. But people change, players change and skills change as well. At this stage, you see that Rohit Sharma, his greatest skill and impact is visible in Test cricket. I expect Virat to have a great World Cup," Manjrekar mentioned.

Further, Manjrekar added, "With his current state of play, you would think that 50-overs is just the right format for him. On the big stage, he has done it for India on many occasions. You get excited about many young and rising players. But on a big night, we need a player, who has been there, done that. That is where Virat becomes so valuable for India."

To back Manjrekar's claims, the two-time ODI world champions India will bank on Kohli's experience as they aim to lift the forthcoming ICC event, to be held on home soil. Back in the 2011 edition, co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and eventual runners-up Sri Lanka, the MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue ended as the champions with a young Kohli part of the historic squad.&nbsp;

Thus, Kohli's experience of having won an ODI World Cup will be essential not only for captain -- who was snubbed for the 2011 edition -- but for the entire Indian unit. At present, the 34-year-old will hope for a miraculous campaign in the continental tournament, which kicks off on Wednesday.&nbsp;

A good run in the Asia Cup will keep Kohli in terrific mindset before the World Cup commences.

This is where he becomes so valuable: Manjrekar on Virat Kohli ahead of India's Asia Cup, CWC '23 campaigns

Virat Kohli has had a glorious run in international cricket. He recently completed 15 years at the highest level, where he has already amassed over 25,000 runs and his century tally stands at 76, next only to Sachin Tendulkar (100). Over the years, the former Indian captain has played innumerable knocks which can be termed memorable.&nbsp;

Kohli's rise was evident after India's 2011 ODI World Cup win and even when he has not been at his best, he has continued to pile vital runs. Recently, former Australian captain Ian Chappell recalled Kohli's initial big success -- which came during India's tour of Australia in 2011/12 -- and termed his 141, in the Adelaide Test, as a masterclass.

<h2>'With the evergreen Tendulkar still plying his trade, Kohli showed glimpses of his talent'</h2>

"In 2012, with the evergreen Tendulkar still plying his trade, Kohli showed glimpses of his talent, also at the WACA ground, with a promising 44 and 75. His skilful batting against a good Australian pace attack hinted at his talent, and when he then followed it with an excellent century in Adelaide, while others around him failed, it was widely accepted he would be the next outstanding Indian batter," Chappell wrote for&nbsp;ESPNCricinfo.

"Appropriately, two years later at Adelaide Oval again, the newly appointed India captain scored two sublime centuries to almost snatch a memorable victory for his side. Kohli's second-innings 141, in particular, on a pitch that encouraged spin, was a masterpiece and with a little more help from his team-mates would have resulted in a spectacular Indian victory," the former cricketer further asserted.

Chappell added, "Despite Kohli's amazing record and his strong leadership, it was that second-innings century in Adelaide in 2014 that cemented his undoubted skill. He hit 16 fours and one six and scored at the superb rate of 80 runs per 100 balls on a pitch that suited Nathan Lyon's sharp-turning off-breaks. Kohli's ability to successfully play the cover drive - the toughest shot for a right-hander on a turning pitch - was exceptional and severely frustrated Australia's charge for victory."

The Adelaide Test was the series opener of the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia. Back then, the then Indian Test captain MS Dhoni was injured and, hence, Kohli led the side for the first time in the purest format. He led from the front with twin centuries in the match -- 115 and 141 during a 364-run chase -- but couldn't guide India to a stunning victory.&nbsp;

The two memorable knocks consolidated Kohli's Test spot and he went on to lead India in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them (most by any Indian). To date, he remains India's go-to-batter across formats -- despite not being in the T20I scheme of things since last year's World Cup -- and will hold the key for the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue in the upcoming Asia Cup (from August 30) and the home ODI World Cup, starting on October 05.

'Virat Kohli's 141 in Adelaide was a masterpiece': Ian Chappell heaps praise on former Indian captain

Rohit Sharma-led India are gearing up for a litmus test in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be hosted jointly by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The continental tournament gets underway on August 30 with Pakistan hosting Nepal in Multan whereas the Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Babar Azam-led Men in Green on September 02 in Pallekele in the Island nation.

The Asia Cup holds a lot of significance as it will soon be followed by the 50-over ODI World Cup&nbsp;on home soil, which starts on October on 05 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;Thus, the upcoming two multi-nation events will certainly define Rohit's captaincy tenure.

While India have a strong squad for the Asia Cup, Rohit-led Indian team management have a lot of decisions to make. The comeback duo, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will be closely monitored in the Asia Cup and their run will help the team decide whether to include them in the CWC '23 edition or not. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if Yuzvendra Chahal makes the cut in the World Cup squad, having been overlooked for the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

Recently, Rohit stated that it's not about his favourite or coach Rahul Dravid's&nbsp;favourite to be in the squad but to get the players who will fit the&nbsp;conditions and team combination. Speaking to PTI, Hitman said, "Me, coaches, and selectors, take into account all factors like opposition, surfaces, our strengths, their weaknesses, and then reach a common ground. There is every chance that we will not be perfect always. At the end of the day, few individuals make decisions, and we are bound to make mistakes as humans. We won't always be right."

Hitman further opined, "'We have tried to communicate with the players after every selection and playing XI that has been announced. We talk to them face to face, one-on-one why they have not been picked. Sometimes, I try and put myself in their shoes. When I wasn't picked in 2011, it was such a heart-breaking moment for me and I felt what was left after being dropped from a World Cup squad?"

<h2>'I remember Yuvraj calling me to his room and....'</h2>

Rohit recalled the time when he was dropped for the 2011 ODI World Cup. He revealed how former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh helped him overcome the slump. "I was sad and sitting in my room and didn't know what to do next. I remember Yuvi calling me to his room and taking me out for dinner," Rohit asserted.

''He explained to me how it feels when you are left out. He told me, 'the best thing is that you have so many years in front of you. As we play in the World Cup, you take this chance to work hard on your game, and skills and make a comeback. There is no way that you won't play for India or not get a chance to play in the World Cup'."

Despite not being part of Dhoni-led India's victorious campaign in 2011, Rohit has redeemed himself in style and was the leading run-getter in the 2019 edition (648 runs with five hundreds). He will look for another prolific campaign in the forthcoming edition and help India lift the mega title at home.

It is to be noted that the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors have to name India's&nbsp;provisional World Cup squad&nbsp;in a week's time.&nbsp;

The comeback duo, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will be closely monitored in the Asia Cup and their run will help the team decide whether to include them in the CWC '23 edition or not. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if Yuzvendra Chahal makes the cut in the World Cup squad, having been overlooked for the Asia Cup. Recently, Rohit stated that it's not about his favourite or coach Rahul Dravid's favourite to be in the squad but to get the players who will fit the conditions and team combination. We won't always be right." Hitman further opined, "'We have tried to communicate with the players after every selection and playing XI that has been announced. We talk to them face to face, one-on-one why they have not been picked. Sometimes, I try and put myself in their shoes. When I wasn't picked in 2011, it was such a heart-breaking moment for me and I felt what was left after being dropped from a World Cup squad?" Also read: Won't be easy for India or any team: Former Pakistan great Wasim Akram on Asia Cup 2023 favourites 'I remember Yuvraj calling me to his room and....' Rohit recalled the time when he was dropped for the 2011 ODI World Cup. There is no way that you won't play for India or not get a chance to play in the World Cup'." Despite not being part of Dhoni-led India's victorious campaign in 2011, Rohit has redeemed himself in style and was the leading run-getter in the 2019 edition (648 runs with five hundreds). He will look for another prolific campaign in the forthcoming edition and help India lift the mega title at home. It is to be noted that the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors have to name India's provisional World Cup squad in a week's time. 'The best thing is....': Indian captain Rohit Sharma recalls Yuvraj Singh's words after CWC '11 snub

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a big statement regarding&nbsp;Mohammed Siraj. The ex-cricketer believes India cannot play Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna ahead of Siraj and the pacer needs to be in the playing XI anyhow during the upcoming home ODI World Cup. Siraj has been exceptional for India across formats, especially with early breakthroughs in ODIs, and has a solid record in Asia.&nbsp;

Chopra highlighted Siraj's record in Asia, which is better than outside the subcontinent, and heaped praise on him. On his YouTube channel, Chopra lauded Siraj and&nbsp;also praised Jasprit Bumrah, who has recently made his international comeback&nbsp;after a long injury layoff&nbsp;during the Ireland T20Is.

<h2>'You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only'</h2>

Chopra said, "Mohammed Siraj is brilliant. He has had a short career. 43 wickets in 24 matches at an average of 20.7 and an economy rate of 4.78. They are better than both Bumrah's and Shami's numbers. In Asia, his average becomes 16.57 and economy rate is 4.51. You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only."

He further opined, "His numbers in Asia are better than his numbers outside Asia. So, people who were talking about whether Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna can be played instead of Siraj, you cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only. You should play him."

Siraj should play ahead of Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna in CWC '23, feels former Indian opener

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes there is no favourite in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The continental tournament is set to be jointly held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka with the tournament opener between Pakistan and Nepal, on August 30, in Multan, Pakistan. Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will be facing Babar Azam &amp; Co. on September 02, in Pallekele in the island nation.&nbsp;

Speaking to India Today, Ganguly said, "Telling favourite is difficult in the Asia Cup. Anyone can win. Both the teams are good. Pakistan is also a good side. India is obviously a good team."

Ganguly, who led India to the Asia Cup final in 2004, further opined on Jasprit Bumrah. The ace pacer recently returned to international cricket, after a long injury layoff, during the Ireland T20Is. He ended with four scalps and the Player-of-the-Series award. On the speedster's return to the 50-over format in the forthcoming Asia Cup, Ganguly said, "Bumrah has done well in Ireland. He had played T20. Now have to play ODI. Have to bowl 10 overs in a match. So let's see."

India pacer Prasidh Krishna heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah as he shared his learnings from the ace speedster during their rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy&nbsp;(NCA) in Bengaluru. India's middle-order woes know no end. In the run-up to the 2019 ODI World Cup, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team auditioned several batters to take up the No. 4 slot. While Ambati Rayudu looked confirmed for the slot, Vijay Shankar got the nod ahead of the former. In the World Cup, India struggled to fix the&nbsp;No. 4 position, but&nbsp;Shankar and Shikhar Dhawan's injuries added to their woes,&nbsp;and the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals of the mega event. Post the 50-over ICC event, India had almost finalised Shreyas Iyer for the No. 4 slot whereas KL Rahul raised his stocks at No. 5, but injuries to the duo didn't solve Rohit Sharma-led India's problems.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors announced a strong 17-man India squad for the continental tournament which includes both Rahul and Iyer. Both the batters have been deemed fit, although Rahul is carrying a niggle, and the two will get much-needed game time as India gear up for the Asia Cup, to be followed by the ODI World Cup at home. Before the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, India's veteran spinner R Ashwin&nbsp;lauded Rahul and feels he has filled the No. 5 slot with expertise ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired. During their playing days, Yuvi and Dhoni formed a lethal batting pair, often handling the No. 4 and 5 spot respectively, and bailed India out of crisis several times.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "Ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired, India were desperately looking for a replacement. Rahul has filled that slot with expertise. He is a definite lock at No. 5 and is also our wicketkeeper-batsman."

Ever since Yuvraj and Dhoni retired, he has filled that slot: Ashwin heaps praise on Rahul ahead of Asia Cup

The BCCI selectors, on Monday (August 21), announced India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The squad includes captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, etc., whereas it also marks the return of middle-order duo Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. Yuzvendra Chahal was the notable omission from the 17-member squad for the continental tournament, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The upcoming edition will be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Chahal's snub made heads turn as India have gone ahead with only one premier spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav whereas Jadeja and Axar Patel complete the spin department. Many former cricketers lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for dropping Chahal. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also slammed the call and backed Chahal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which will begin soon after the Asia Cup on October 05.&nbsp;

On his YouTube channel, Bhajji said, "The one thing I feel is lacking in the team,&nbsp;it's the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler."

“I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

Hitman added,&nbsp;"We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs,&nbsp;has&nbsp;claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

Chahal's snub made heads turn as India have gone ahead with only one premier spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav whereas Jadeja and Axar Patel complete the spin department. Many former cricketers lashed out at the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for dropping Chahal. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also slammed the call and backed Chahal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which will begin soon after the Asia Cup on October 05. On his YouTube channel, Bhajji said, "The one thing I feel is lacking in the team, it's the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler." “I think his presence in the team was necessary. Also read: He has become the scapegoat: Sanjay Manjrekar reacts to Ravi Shastri's 'Virat Kohli can bat at No. 4' remark After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9." "We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Hitman added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do." Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs, has claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals. 'No white-ball spinner better than him in India': Harbhajan on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, backs him for CWC '23

The BCCI selectors, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup on Monday (August 23). The continental tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan, is set to commence on August 30 whereas India will kick off their campaign on September 02 when they take on Pakistan in Pallekele in the Island nation. The competition will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the upcoming ODI World Cup&nbsp;which gets underway in India on October 05.

With regard to the 50-over ICC event, Rohit Sharma-led India are preparing hard and will closely monitor the progress of their middle and lower order as there still remain&nbsp;a lot of issues for the No. 4 spot. Shreyas Iyer, who is a top contender for the No. 4 spot, is set to feature in the continental tournament after a long injury layoff -- in early February. In his absence, India have tried plenty of backups such as Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, however, no one cemented the spot (as a backup for Iyer) despite Samson's decent faring.&nbsp;

Moreover, KL Rahul -- who bats at No. 5 -- is also coming back to international cricket after a long time (since his hip injury IPL 2023's latter stages). Thus, India still have lots to do to fix their middle order before the World Cup commences. In this regard, former India head coach Ravi Shastri backed Virat Kohli to drop down to No. 4.&nbsp;

Shastri told Star Sports channel, "If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it." He added that&nbsp;during the 2019 World Cup, he considered changing Kohli's place "just to break that top heavy line-up".

Shastri revealed, "You know, because if we lose two or three at the top, we are gone and it was proved. If you look at Virat Kohli's record, he is good enough at number four."

Now, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar has shared his take on whether Kohli should bat at No. 4 in the upcoming World Cup. In a segment with Tom Moody, on Star Sports, Manjrekar said, "The more and more you talk about other options like Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli seems to get relegated. He has sort of become the scapegoat in the sense that you bat him at No. 4 and all your problems are solved."

"There is also a cultural issue in Indian cricket. In 2007 World Cup when the team management of Rahul Dravid and Greg Chappell sent Tendulkar at No. 4 instead of opening because they had people like Virender Sehwag and others at the top of the order. But that became a huge controversy. So it is really up to Kohli, an iconic player, on whether he wants to bat at No.4. It seems like a perfectly simple solution, but it concerns Kohli," he added.

He has become the scapegoat: Sanjay Manjrekar reacts to Ravi Shastri's 'Virat Kohli can bat at No. 4' remark

The continental tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, kicks off on August 30 with India opening their campaign versus Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors named a strong squad, comprising KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer whereas Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were included in the final 17 with Sanju Samson being named the sole reserve player.

Although Rahul is part of the Asia Cup squad, chief selector Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma, while addressing the media, made it clear that he has a niggle but there is nothing serious with regard to the keeper-batter's fitness. Now, former India chief selector Kris Srikkanth, part of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, has slammed the selection committee for going ahead with Rahul despite questions about his fitness.&nbsp;

<h2>'If a player is not fit during selection, you shouldn't pick him'</h2>

In a video on YouTube, Srikkanth said, "It's being said that KL Rahul has a niggle. If you have a niggle, don't pick him in the squad. If a player is not fit during selection, you shouldn't pick him. That was our policy. On the day of selection, if a player is not fit, don't select him. If you want to pick him for the World Cup, select him for the World Cup. That's a different issue. Now they are saying that he might play after a couple of matches and that's why we have picked Sanju Samson as a travelling reserve. What's all this."

The former cricketer further opined, "You're playing Asia Cup which is also a premier tournament. We haven't qualified for the Asia Cup (final) over the last two editions. You have to qualify for the final and perform well. They are still unsure about the World Cup squad. You're confused. You need to have something called a selection policy. I am not trying to take any credit but let me tell you what we (our selection panel) used to have."

Srikkanth recalled his term as a chief selector and added, "We had this problem during a Test match. It was against a Test vs South Africa. VVS Laxman said he would play if he gets fit in time and urged us to keep him in the team. But on the day of the match, he was not fit. And then we thought of drafting Rohit Sharma in. But Rohit played football and injured himself. After that, Wriddhiman Saha made his debut. On that day, our selection panel decided not to be desperate. On the day of selection, if you're not fit, don't pick that player. You're making it look as though Indians don't have talent. You have created a situation like that."

With Rahul having a niggle, India have Ishan Kishan as a backup in the main squad whereas Samson will also be the travelling reserve. The seven-time Asia Cup champions are placed in Group A along with Pakistan and Nepal.&nbsp;

Kris Srikkanth lashes out at Agarkar-led BCCI selectors for including KL Rahul in India's Asia Cup squad

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a strong 17-man squad for Team India's campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup. The squad includes KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as the duo mark their return after a long injury layoff. Rahul got injured during IPL 2023, where he was leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Iyer got ruled out during the middle of 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, early this year. Rahul suffered a thigh injury whereas Iyer's back issues resurfaced.&nbsp;

Thus, Iyer and Rahul were badly missed by the Indian team management as the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led national side tried several players in the middle order to fill the void created by the the two. With India preparing hard for the home ODI World Cup, set to kick off on October 5, the Men in Blue will be relieved to see the return of Iyer and Rahul for the continental tournament, which commences on August 30. The two will be eager to make the most of the opportunities with only a handful of games left before India's ODI WC opener, on October 8.

After Iyer and Rahul's return, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir reacted to the development and&nbsp;believes the two have to perform if they want to start in the playing XI in India's World Cup opener, where they face Australia in Chennai.&nbsp;

<h2>'It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, but they will need to perform'</h2>

Gambhir said on Star Sports, "One thing is clear; there is no front runner for a position when you are trying to win the World Cup. Form and impact are important. The players who are in form need to be picked, rather than those who are not. Let it be Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, or anybody. If Tilak Varma is in better form than someone, if Suryakumar Yadav is in better form than Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan, then you need to start that player. Because the World Cup comes once in four years, you don’t go and see who is a front runner or not. Who is in the best form after the Asia Cup and the Australia series, just as Rohit Sharma had said, there is no guarantee for anybody’s position. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad."

He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because if you want to win the World Cup, only form and impact from the players will help you win. A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him. So, in my opinion, whether it’s KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer or anybody, we will look at their form after the Asia Cup and which team plays in the Australia series. That series will determine who plays in the World Cup rather than deciding after the series is over, that who will play in the World Cup. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together.”

Great to have them back but they need to perform: Gambhir on Rahul, Iyer's comeback for Asia Cup

Rohit Sharma-led India are set to feature in the forthcoming Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 in Multan, Pakistan. The Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka as the continental tournament will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The forthcoming competition will be held in the 50-over format as it will be an ideal dress rehearsal for the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which commences on October 05 in India.

As India have been without an ICC title since 2013, when they won the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni, Rohit &amp; Co. have a challenging&nbsp;few months, with the Asia Cup and ODI WC. Rohit will be eager to become the third Indian captain to lift the 50-over mega title after Kapil Dev and Dhoni. Under Dhoni, India won the 2011 edition -- co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka -- where Rohit wasn't part of the squad.&nbsp;

Raja Venkat, one of the members of the BCCI selection panel headed by Kris Srikkanth in 2011, has now revealed the reason behind Hitman's omission.

<h2>'Gary Kirsten felt it was a perfect selection but MS Dhoni wanted Piyush Chawla'</h2>

"When we sat to select the team, Rohit was very much in the scheme of things. Yashpal Sharma and I were in South Africa at that time because India was touring South Africa, and the other three selectors – Srikkanth, [Surendra] Bhave and [Narendra] Hirwani – were in Chennai. So, when we were selecting the team, numbers 1-14, every name was accepted by the panel. No. 15, we suggested the name of Rohit Sharma. Gary Kirsten also felt it was a perfect selection. But the captain wanted Piyush Chawla. So immediately, Kirsten somersaulted. He said: 'I think that's a better choice.' So, that is how Rohit Sharma got left out," Venkat recently told RevSportz during a freewheeling chat.

Venkat added, "We didn't get a chance to talk to him, but again we were also disappointed that we couldn't select him. But when the captain and coach wanted Piyush as the 15th member, we all accepted it. Initially, we had selected the 15 which we all felt was the right one. Unfortunately, we had to make one change, and we had to give it to the captain and the coach.".

Back in 2011, India won the championship by beating teams such as Australia, Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka -- in the final -- to win the title after 28 years. As Rohit missed out on being part of India's victorious run in 2011, he will be desperate to lead his side to the championship this time around in the October-November competition. The home side will kick off their campaign against five-time winners Australia on October 08 in Chennai.&nbsp;

Rohit will be eager to become the third Indian captain to lift the 50-over mega title after Kapil Dev and Dhoni. Under Dhoni, India won the 2011 edition -- co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka -- where Rohit wasn't part of the squad. Raja Venkat, one of the members of the BCCI selection panel headed by Kris Srikkanth in 2011, has now revealed the reason behind Hitman's omission. 'Gary Kirsten felt it was a perfect selection but MS Dhoni wanted Piyush Chawla' "When we sat to select the team, Rohit was very much in the scheme of things. Also read: From Sachin Tendulkar to Kapil Dev: Top 6 Indians with most sixes in ODI World Cups Venkat added, "We didn't get a chance to talk to him, but again we were also disappointed that we couldn't select him. But when the captain and coach wanted Piyush as the 15th member, we all accepted it. Initially, we had selected the 15 which we all felt was the right one. Unfortunately, we had to make one change, and we had to give it to the captain and the coach.". Back in 2011, India won the championship by beating teams such as Australia, Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka -- in the final -- to win the title after 28 years. As Rohit missed out on being part of India's victorious run in 2011, he will be desperate to lead his side to the championship this time around in the October-November competition. The home side will kick off their campaign against five-time winners Australia on October 08 in Chennai. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Kirsten had Rohit in India's 2011 ODI WC plans but Dhoni wanted...: Ex-BCCI selector makes big revelation

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup 2023 edition, set to kick off on August 30. The Rohit Sharma-led squad comprises several star players and all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been retained as Hitman's deputy for the continental tournament, to be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Paikistan. While there were some reports which indicated that Jasprit Bumrah might pip Hardik as the vice-captain, the BCCI selectors have backed Hardik.&nbsp;

Hardik's captaincy was criticised during India's five-match T20I series versus West Indies, held in West Indies and USA. Some of his statements also made heads turn whereas he failed to inspire with the bat and ball. With the bat, the 29-year-old Hardik ended with 77 runs at a strike rate of 110. However, he remains the white-ball vice-captain and former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has backed him to be the next captain but shared an important advice for the talented all-rounder.&nbsp;

"See, he definitely could be the next captain, the way he is going about leading in T20Is. But my concern is not that. Hardik has to perform. He is so talented and has done well, but where is the Hardik Pandya that scored 92 against Australia? That sort of form I want to see Hardik in," Lal told&nbsp;Hindustan Times&nbsp;on the sidelines of the CEAT Awards.

Lal, India's 1983 World Cup winning all-rounder, further added, "At the same time, I am very happy that he is bowling. We need him bowling in the World Cup as that sixth bowler. They have given him a very important role and Hardik has to ensure that he does well."

Needless to say, Hardik's form will be extremely crucial for India in the upcoming Asia Cup as well as the ODI World Cup, which begins in India on October 05. The all-rounder will like to silence his critics in style with some all-round performances in the upcoming multi-nation events.&nbsp;

'Where is old Hardik Pandya who...': Former Indian star backs all-rounder as next captain, shares THIS advice

India announced a 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The seven-time winners named a strong unit for the continental tournament, which gets underway on August 30. While KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer return after a long layoff, the squad also comprises Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna. Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission whereas Sanju Samson was named as the sole reserve player.&nbsp;

While a majority have been impressed with the squad, a few have raised questions about Surya's inclusion. It is to be noted that the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter has failed to replicate his T20I success in the 50-over format and has managed only 511 runs in 26 ODIs, at 24.33. He even struggled in the West Indies ODIs. On the other hand, Tilak Varma -- who is yet to debut in ODIs -- got the nod ahead of Samson despite the latter's good run in ODIs. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Samson averages over 50 in 13 ODIs. Thus, many believe Samson should have been in the main squad rather than going as a travelling reserve for the continental tournament.

<h2>'I know that he's a player that we all love to watch, but he is....'</h2>

Former Australia player Tom Moody reacted to India's Asia Cup squad and feels Surya is lucky to be part of the final 17. "The player that I think is lucky to be in that side is Suryakumar Yadav. I know that he's a player that we all love to watch, but he is yet to really master the 50-over game. I think he's played over 20 matches now and at a very modest return," Moody said on Star Sports.

“And to me, there are better options available. I would have much rather seen a younger player like a Jaiswal in that side. Or take that position, and play a wrist spinner. Um, you know another wrist spinner," Moody opined.

The Australian further added, "He's a genius in T20 cricket. But the 50-over cricket is a completely different format, and he's yet to really crack the code for that. You know, I just don't think he's gonna do it at the last minute."

India are placed in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan and Nepal. The Men in Blue, who are the seven-time champions, will kick off their campaign on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka whereas the competition gets underway on August 30, in Multan, Pakistan, with the home side taking on Nepal.&nbsp;

'There are better options available': Ex-Aus star feels THIS player is 'lucky' to be in India's Asia Cup squad

From Sachin Tendulkar to Kapil Dev: Top 6 Indians with most sixes in ODI World Cups

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup. It&nbsp;comprises several star players and also sees the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. However, Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission whereas Sanju Samson also failed to make it to the final squad but will travel as a reserve player. While Samson failed to make the cut, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma,&nbsp;uncapped in ODIs, are part of the squad. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reviewed the squad selection and feels Samson could have been included in the final 17.&nbsp;

<h2>'Sanju Samson and his&nbsp;fans&nbsp;might consider themselves slightly unlucky'</h2>

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "The first big news is that Sanju Samson's name is not there. In whose place could his name have come? He would have come in place of either Tilak or Surya. He could have become a part of the 17 in place of either of them. Sanju Samson's fans and Sanju Samson himself might consider themselves slightly unlucky because his performances are good in ODIs as of now as well. He has an average of over 50 and he scored a fifty in the West Indies also. There is no doubt that he plays well. He has a little work experience as well."

On the other hand, Chopra opined on Suryakumar and said, "Suryakumar Yadav's story in ODI cricket has not been good. We all know that he is a very good player and we also want his ODI career to flourish but the truth is that he hasn't been able to understand the ODI template thus far. The problem is that you have very little time. " He added, "To be very honest, my initial thought was that if a wicketkeeper has to play in the middle order, Sanju Samson is definitely the second option after KL Rahul. However, if a place can be created as an opener, then Ishan Kishan, without a shadow of a doubt, is your second wicketkeeper."

Backing Chopra's claims, Samson has done reasonably well in the ODI format. The right-hander has 390 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of&nbsp;55.71 and a strike rate of&nbsp;104.00 along with three half-centuries. His T20I numbers aren't impressive but Samson has done well in ODIs. Meanwhile, Surya has struggled in the 50-over format, managing 511 runs in 26 ODIs at an average of 24.33. Varma, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in the format. He got picked in the final 17 on the basis of a promising start to his international cricket career during India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and USA.

India open their campaign in the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. Samson could've been picked ahead of Tilak Varma or Suryakumar: Chopra reviews India's Asia Cup squad

On Monday (August 21), India's 17-member squad for the Asia Cup was&nbsp;announced. While it saw the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, some big names were also missing, such as Yuzvendra Chahal, Umran Malik and&nbsp;Shikhar Dhawan. While not many would have considered Dhawan's name for the Asia Cup, with the left-hander not being in India's scheme of things since 2023, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar opined on his future.

"Rohit is not a bad player, Shubman has had a phenomenal year. Ishan Kishan (is another one). Shikhar has been a terrific player for India. At the moment three guys are doing well and you can fit only 15. Unfortunately, someone has to fit. At the moment these are our preferred openers," Agarkar said while talking to the reporters after the Asia Cup squad announcement.

Shikhar Dhawan has been one of India's most prolific batters in the modern era. Dhawan formed a lethal opening pair with current captain Rohit over the years and remained India's consistent performer in ICC events (during the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy and 2015 ODI World Cup) but his stocks declined since 2021. And Shubman Gill's emergence, along with Ishan Kishan's attack-mode of play, led to his ouster in recent times. While he led India's second-stringed line-up in away tours (in New Zealand, Sri Lanka, etc.) and led in a few series at home as well, the 37-year-old has now fallen way behind in the pecking order.

Dhawan has played 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is. The white-ball legend&nbsp;has amassed&nbsp;6,793 and&nbsp;1,759 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively with 17&nbsp;tons and 50 fifties&nbsp;in the shorter formats overall. He also has 2,315 runs in 34 Tests, with a best of 190.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Shikhar Dhawan's potential India comeback after Asia Cup snub

On Monday (August 21), the BCCI selection committee, headed by former pacer Ajit Agarkar, announced Rohit Sharma-led India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup. The upcoming continental tournament is set to kick off on August 30, in Pakistan, whereas the Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2, in Pallekele as the competition will be jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The&nbsp;squad comprises star players, and&nbsp;sees the return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna in the 50-over setup with less than two months for the home ODI World Cup. However, the spin department does not feature the 33-year-old Yuzvendra Chahal.

Chahal hasn't been a regular in the ODI setup with Kuldeep Yadav&nbsp;doing well, whereas the Indian team management cannot afford to play the two together as Rohit &amp; Co. are focused on adding&nbsp;more depth in their&nbsp;batting.

After the Asia Cup snub, Chahal took to his official account on X, earlier known as Twitter, to react with a cryptic post.

Speaking to the reporters after India's squad&nbsp;announcement, Rohit opened up on Chahal's omission and has refused to rule out any player from India's&nbsp;scheme of things with regard to the upcoming ODI World Cup, beginning at home on October 05. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

Rohit further highlighted, "We want somebody who can bat at that spot. He can do that for us."

&nbsp;

The 36-year-old&nbsp;added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

The squad comprises star players, and sees the return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna in the 50-over setup with less than two months for the home ODI World Cup. However, the spin department does not feature the 33-year-old Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal hasn't been a regular in the ODI setup with Kuldeep Yadav doing well, whereas the Indian team management cannot afford to play the two together as Rohit & Co. are focused on adding more depth in their batting. After the Asia Cup snub, Chahal took to his official account on X, earlier known as Twitter, to react with a cryptic post. Yuzvendra Chahal reacts after being snubbed from India's Asia Cup squad, shares cryptic post

On Sunday evening (August 20), Jasprit Bumrah-led India beat Ireland by 33 runs in the second and penultimate T20I to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Ruturaj Gaikwad (43-ball 58), Sanju Samson (26-bal 40) and Player-of-the-Match Rinku Singh (21-ball 38) were the stars for India with the bat as visitors posted a competitive 185 for 5. Later, Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Ravi Bishnoi took two wickets each to restrict the Irish camp for 152 for 8

After the game, former Indian batter Abhishek Nayar heaped praise on opener Ruturaj after he played a mature knock (58) to revive India's innings after they were 34 for 2 inside the powerplays. "It was a mature knock. It was very Ruturaj Gaikwad. Normally in T20 cricket, from that position, he tends to get bigger eighties and he converts that into a hundred. The way he batted, there was controlled aggression,” said Nayar while speaking to Jio Cinema.

Nayar added, "He is trying to find his way in international cricket. So it's always good to get a fifty for India and you are going to always go stronger and stronger. We all know the potential he has. We all know the talent and his ability to convert scores."

Ruturaj, who is also the vice-captain for the Ireland tour, will look to come up with another knock in the series finale, which will be held at the same venue -- i.e. at&nbsp;&nbsp;The Village, Dublin -- on Wednesday (August 23).&nbsp;

'Very mature knock' - Former India batter hails Ruturaj Gaikwad after impressive 58 vs Ireland in 2nd T20I

Indian captain Rohit Sharma explained the reason for overlooking Yuvzendra Chahal as the BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, announced a strong 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition. The squad comprises Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav as the spinners but Chahal found no place. Chahal has been behind in the pecking order in the 50-over format. His last ODI came versus New Zealand during the home series early this year. He wasn't part of the playing XI in the following home series versus Australia and even missed out during the Windies tour. The veteran will still be hopeful for a miraculous turnaround before the ODI World Cup squad is announced.&nbsp;

Chahal has so far claimed 121 wickets in 72 ODIs and was part of India's run in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where they bowed out in the semi-finals.&nbsp;

'Only way we could have...': Rohit on Chahal's Asia Cup snub, says 'World Cup door not closed on anyone'

On Monday afternoon (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee picked a strong squad which sees the return of KL Rahul and&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer whereas pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have also&nbsp;made an ODI comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. The duo marked their international return&nbsp;during the ongoing Ireland T20I series opener.

The squad comprises 17 players whereas Sanju Samson has been named as a backup. The main squad also includes Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his debut in the ODI format. Varma, after a stellar run in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians (MI), got his maiden international cap during the India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and Florida. The left-hander impressed with scores of 39, 51, 49*, 7*, 27.&nbsp;

Former India pacer Agarkar, who is spearheading the BCCI selection committee, opined on Varma's inclusion and said after the squad announcement, "In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament."

He added, "And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So fortunately we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad."

Varma is currently part of the Bumrah-led Indian squad for the ongoing three T20Is versus Ireland in Dublin. So far, he hasn't managed to do anything significant in the two games but will aim for a big score in the final T20I with India already having an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Varma's inclusion has strengthened India's batting line-up. Now, the national side&nbsp;not only have another left-hander&nbsp;for the middle and lower order but the 20-year-old can also bowl a bit. It will be interesting to see if he makes his ODI debut in the upcoming continental tournament, where India kick off their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

India are placed in Group A along with Babar Azam-led Men in Green and Nepal.

'A left-hander looks very promising': Ajit Agarkar on Tilak Varma's inclusion in India's Asia Cup squad

Jasprit Bumrah returns: Major competitions missed by India pacer since mid-2022

Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar shared his take on India's 10-year-long ICC title drought since 2013. It is to be noted that Team India last won a mega event during the 2013 Champions Trophy, when MS Dhoni-led, inexperienced Indian&nbsp;line-up beat England in a rain-marred final, by five runs (DLS method), to lift the coveted title in England and Wales.

Since then, India have reached the final of mega events on four occasions (in T20 World Cup 2014, the 2017 Champions Trophy, the two WTC finals) and semi-finals on as many instances (during the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup, 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cup). However, they could not add to their trophy cabinet.

Akhar, in an interview with RevSportz, opined on India's empty trophy cabinet since 2013 and feels things have gone south for India ever since Dhoni stepped down as the captain. Under the legendary skipper, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. In addition, he led India to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test Rankings.&nbsp;

<h2>'The moment Dhoni gave up captaincy, things went south for India'</h2>

Akhtar said, "First of all, it is the pressure that you all put on the team. It is almost impossible to play with such pressure. Like I told you, it is as if you can’t lose. If you, God forbid, lose, all hell will break loose."

He further opined, "The second and more important point is you had someone who could soak in all the pressure, and protect his teammates. He would not let his teammates feel the pressure, and that was the best thing about MS Dhoni. You won the 2007 World T20 under him, the 2011 World Cup and then the 2013 Champions Trophy. The moment Dhoni gave up the captaincy, things went south for India."

On the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has already led India in two ICC events&nbsp;but not managed any success, the former Pakistani pacer stated, "When I see Rohit, I keep asking this question of myself if he should have accepted captaincy in the first place? I think Rohit feels panic on occasion and lets the pressure get to him. The pressure of captaincy cripples you, and it happened with Virat Kohli also. That’s why you don’t win a major tournament."

Akhtar added, "Make no mistake, Rohit does have the team to win the World Cup. As a batter, he is perhaps more talented than Virat Kohli also. He is a classical batsman and the kind of shots he plays, it is just mind-blowing. But with captaincy, is he being able to do that? Let him prove me wrong and all of us wrong, for that’s what all of India will want him to do in this World Cup."

Under Dhoni, India became temperamentally strong during crunch situations, concentrated more on fielding and running between wickets,&nbsp;and saw a smooth transition with the baton being passed to Virat Kohli, who was later replaced by Rohit as full-time captain early in 2022. Now, Rohit will look to end India's title drought with a win in the upcoming home ODI World Cup, set to begin on October 05 in Ahmedabad.

The moment Dhoni gave up the captaincy, things went south for India." On the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has already led India in two ICC events but not managed any success, the former Pakistani pacer stated, "When I see Rohit, I keep asking this question of myself if he should have accepted captaincy in the first place? I think Rohit feels panic on occasion and lets the pressure get to him. The pressure of captaincy cripples you, and it happened with Virat Kohli also. That’s why you don’t win a major tournament." Also read: No Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer! Harbhajan Singh names his India squad for Asia Cup 2023 Akhtar added, "Make no mistake, Rohit does have the team to win the World Cup. As a batter, he is perhaps more talented than Virat Kohli also. He is a classical batsman and the kind of shots he plays, it is just mind-blowing. But with captaincy, is he being able to do that? Let him prove me wrong and all of us wrong, for that’s what all of India will want him to do in this World Cup." Under Dhoni, India became temperamentally strong during crunch situations, concentrated more on fielding and running between wickets, and saw a smooth transition with the baton being passed to Virat Kohli, who was later replaced by Rohit as full-time captain early in 2022. Now, Rohit will look to end India's title drought with a win in the upcoming home ODI World Cup, set to begin on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Moment MS Dhoni gave up captaincy, things went south: Akhtar on India's ICC title drought since 2013

Jasprit Bumrah will lead a second-string&nbsp;Indian team in the three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, with the series opener on Friday (August 18). However, the main focus is already on the forthcoming 50-over Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 30 (to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The continental tournament will be an ideal dress rehearsal for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. for the home ODI World Cup which commences on October 5 in Ahmedabad. At present, most are awaiting the start of the Asia Cup with the Indian&nbsp;squad likely to be announced on August 20.

Before India's official squad announcement, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh picked his 15-man Indian team for the multi-nation tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran firstly spoke at length on India's tour of West Indies -- where they lost the five T20Is -- and then shifted focus to the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

Harbhajan said, "I thought India would win that series easily (the WI T20Is, which Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. lost 2-3). But the result has left many shocked and concerned. I was taken aback as well because West Indies, a team that did not make the World Cup, beat us. This indeed is a big achievement for West Indies, but a major concern for India. Yes, Kohli and Rohit weren't there, and they won't stay for long, but this young brigade that had toured West Indies has learned a lot from this. I previously said that India can make 2-3 teams, and they still can, but the results are yet to reflect."

Bhajji then shifted focus to the Asia Cup and picked his 15, including 'proven player' KL Rahul, but his list didn't include Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer. Both Iyer and Rahul are nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru.&nbsp;However, there are more positive developments with regard to the latter's fitness. On Rahul, Harbhajan said, "He is a proven player and if you want to see him in the World Cup squad, this is the right time to bring him back."

The former off-spinner's list didn't comprise Samson either, who averages 55.71 in ODIs. Instead, he went ahead with Suryakumar Yadav who has averaged&nbsp;less than 12 in the last nine innings in the format. Moreover, he backed&nbsp;Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as India's spin-bowling options and added Tilak Verma in the mix as well.

India open their campaign on September 02 versus Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. They are placed in Group A along with the Men in Green and Nepal.
