Indian cricket is not at its best. The senior men's team have not won an ICC title since 2013 and recently lost the WTC final to Australia by 209 runs. While a lot of questions have been raised about Indian captain Rohit Sharma&nbsp;and head coach Rahul Dravid, BCCI has also been slammed for not giving enough breaks to players between tournaments. Moreover, many have thrashed the Indian cricket board for not finding a chief selector ever since Chetan Sharma left the post vacant following his explosive remarks during a TV&nbsp;sting operation early in 2023.

While BCCI continues to struggle to find Chetan Sharma's successor, reports have suggested that former Indian opener Virender Sehwag&nbsp;could represent North Zone in the selection committee and also become the next chief selector. BCCI is looking for a big name to head the selection committee, and while Sehwag is eligible to take over the post, he is unlikely to apply for it due to the pay package.

<h2>Why big names such as Virender Sehwag may not apply for chief selector's post?</h2>

As per reports in the news agency PTI, the pay package isn't lucrative enough to attract big names such as Sehwag for the post of chief selector. It is to be noted that the current salary of a chief selector is INR 1 crore (10 million). A BCCI official, on condition&nbsp;of&nbsp;anonymity, spoke at length to PTI about the matter, with regards to Sehwag's name cropping up as an ideal candidate. He&nbsp;said, "During CoA's time, Viru was asked to apply for the head coach's job and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself and also the pay package isn't something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature. But if we talk about stature, only he makes the cut from North Zone. It is not that BCCI can't pay a chairman of selectors at least Rs 4-5 crore. It can actually solve a lot of these conflict of interest issues which prevent prominent players from even thinking of coming into selection committee."

Further, the BCCI official stressed on the importance of having a significant name as the chief selector. The official added that the selector needs to take brave decisions and also stand his ground in front of the captain and coach.&nbsp;

"When Dilip bhai was chairman, he had to make a choice between S Badrinath and Virat Kohli. He saw a few India A games in Australia and he knew whom to back. Rest is history. He could stand his ground in front of Greg Chappell before that."

At present, former Indian opener Shiv Sundar Das, from the East Zone, is spearheading the selection committee. The senior men's team will be in action next month during their all-format tour of the West Indies, starting July 12. BCCI will be eager to appoint the head of the selection committee very soon with the ODI World Cup to be held later this year at home.

Virender Sehwag eligible to become chief selector, unlikely to apply due to THIS reason - Reports

India lost the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final to Australia by a whopping 209-run margin at The Oval, London, earlier&nbsp;this month. Having reached the WTC final for the second time in a row, India once again finished second&nbsp;(they lost&nbsp;to New Zealand in the summit clash of the inaugural cycle in 2021). India will now commence their campaign in the third cycle of the WTC with a two-match Test series versus West Indies in the Caribbean island, starting on July 12.

Prior to the Indian Test squad announcement by the BCCI selectors, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar shared his take on the team composition going forward. Manjrekar feels Indian selectors need to make some big decisions and should include at least three new batters and pacers in the mix, with many senior players looking out of touch, while the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, etc. remain injured.

<h2>'About time we start rewarding the guys who are doing well in first-class cricket'</h2>

"The game changers for Australia in the WTC final - Steve Smith and Travis Head - don't play a lot of T20 cricket. So we have to find guys who are not going to be fatigued or don't have to make the adjustments from IPL to Test cricket. About time we start rewarding the guys who are doing well in first-class cricket. And not just runs. The selectors could look at players who have it in them to be future Test players and succeed in foreign conditions. I would like to see at least three new batters come into play in the picture and new fast bowlers," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

The cricketer-turned-commentator further opined, "When it comes to batting, they just have to look at first-class performers and not just the amount of runs the player has scored. if you closely observe our domestic cricket then you will find players for No. 3, 4, 5 who has a decent defensive technique, has an appetite for runs and that's your guy, that's the guy to back."

On the pace department, Manjrekar added, "Just a few months back I was taking pride in the depth that we have in our seam-bowling department and suddenly Bumrah is not fit. There are quite fit others like Prasidh Krishna so maybe for Test cricket, India need to create a new line of fast bowlers. Now you should look for specific test players. If somebody gets injured, we should have backups ready. Like Scott Boland. Came in straightaway and made an impact. We had to go back to Umesh Yadav which is not a good sign."

India's tour of West Indies will comprise two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. It will be interesting to see if the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav, etc. retain&nbsp;their spots or are replaced by the young guns. Meanwhile, even Virat Kohli's Test numbers have been below par in recent years whereas Rohit and R Ashwin do not have age and fitness on their side.

West Indies tour: Sanjay Manjrekar calls for inclusion of '3 new batters and pacers' in India's Test line-up

MS Dhoni remains a huge name in world cricket. The Jharkhand-born Indian cricketer debuted in international cricket in late 2004 and soon became a household name. In 2007, he led a young Indian team -- sans seniors such as regular captain Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sourav Ganguly -- in the T20 World Cup and went on to win the championship in South Africa. Soon after, he became India's full-time captain and ended with all three major ICC trophies under his belt.

Recently, Dilip Vengsarkar -- India's 1983 World Cup-winning member and former chief selector -- revealed how and why Dhoni was elevated as the white-ball captain. It is to be noted that Dravid stepped down as the Indian captain during MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue's T20 WC campaign in South Africa. Dhoni was named as the white-ball skipper before he led India to the T20 WC title. Vengsarkar, who served as the chief selector when Dravid resigned, revealed Dhoni's body language, and communication skills with other players worked in his favour to get the top post.

<h2>'We saw Dhoni's approach to the game...'</h2>

“Apart from being an automatic choice in the team, you look at the player’s cricketing acumen, body language, ability to lead from the front and man management skills. We saw Dhoni's approach to the game, body language, how he spoke to others; we got positive feedback," Vengsarkar told Hindustan Times.

It is widely known that after Dravid resigned, the BCCI urged Sachin Tendulkar to take up the Indian captaincy, which he turned down politely and suggested Dhoni's name. Good feedback, tactical acumen, body language, and man-management skills did the trick for Dhoni who took over Indian cricket in all formats by late 2008 when he became the Test captain.

Apart from his captaincy, Dhoni ended his international career with 17,266 runs, 108 half-centuries, 16 tons, 634 catches, 359 sixes, and 195 stumpings. He announced his international retirement on August 15, 2020, but remains active in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth title in this year's edition.

Former India chief selector reveals how MS Dhoni became India's permanent white-ball captain

India locked horns with Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final and lost by 209 runs at The Oval, London earlier this month. With another failure in an ICC event, India's trophyless run continues in mega tournaments since 2013. Ever since Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli, he was expected to take the national side to some big wins in ICC events. But India have failed twice under his leadership. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, India were hammered by eventual winners England by ten wickets and now lost to Australia in the WTC finale.

India's ICC title drought continues since 2013 when they won the ICC Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni. Thus, a lot of questions are now being raised about Rohit's captaincy. He has a herculean task ahead as Hitman not only needs to win the next ICC tournament, i.e. the 2023 ODI World Cup at home later this year&nbsp;but find an able successor for a smooth transition. While many are calling for his removal as captain, especially in whites, former Australian skipper Michael Clarke has backed him.

<h2>'I think he is a very good captain. I like his aggressive approach'</h2>

Speaking to&nbsp;RevSportz&nbsp;after India's&nbsp;WTC final loss,&nbsp;Clarke stated, "I would be keeping the faith with Rohit. I think he is a very good captain. I like his aggressive approach, he looks to be as positive as he can be. He has had a lot of success as a leader. Look at his IPL record for Mumbai (Indians). Just because India didn’t win the Test World Championship doesn’t mean Rohit is not the right guy to lead India. The fact that India qualified again, they are the only team to make consecutive finals, says a lot about how they have played their Test cricket over the past four years. It is also a very important time for stability with the One-Day World Cup right around the corner."

Clarke added, "He has done well as a batter as well. Think of his hundred in the last series. Losing a one-off final doesn't make him a bad captain and nor does it make India a bad team. To make consecutive finals isn't easy. What it means is that India was the only team to play consistently well over a period of four years. To do so in Test cricket is commendable and I would urge you to look at that as well before making any kind of judgment call."

Team India have a lot on their plate going forward. They need to start the 2023-25 WTC cycle on a positive note, start looking at the future, groom young leaders and aim to end their ICC title drought later this year with the ODI WC to be held at home. 'Just because they didn’t win WTC final...': Former Aussie skipper backs Rohit Sharma to remain India captain

Jasprit Bumrah has been out of cricketing action since India's home T20Is versus Australia in September 2022. Since then, a recurring back injury has kept him out of action and he was not part of India's T20 World Cup campaign in Australia, home Test series versus Pat Cummins &amp; Co. early this year, IPL 2023 and the recently-held WTC final.

Indian cricket fans are desperately waiting for Bumrah's return to action as Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. have a litmus test waiting ahead with the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup to take place in the latter half of 2023. As per reports, the veteran pacer is eyeing an international return during India's three-match T20I series versus hosts Ireland prior to Asia Cup and ODI WC on home soil.

<h2>'It will be a big boost to Indian cricket team'</h2>

“Jasprit Bumrah is looking very good for the Ireland series in August this year. It will be a big boost to the Indian cricket team and will also allow Bumrah time in the middle after the long injury lay-off. If everything stays on course, a Bumrah at peak fitness is likely to take the field,” a senior BCCI official told News18 in a recent interaction.

“Nitin Patel and Rajnikanth have been working very closely with Bumrah and keeping him on track during the rehab period at the NCA. Both are very experienced and don’t want to take any chance with Bumrah in what is a very crucial white-ball year and also the start of the new World Test Championship cycle,”&nbsp;the official further added.

Bumrah -- who has 128, 121 and 70 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively -- has been a crucial part of Team India since his international debut in early 2016. Of late, injuries have dented his progress but he will be eager to return to action after attaining full fitness and help India end their ten-year-long ICC title drought with an ODI WC triumph later in 2023.

Team India failed to win a World Test Championship (WTC) title for the second time earlier this month. Rohit Sharma’s men had to face a crushing 209-run defeat at the hands of Australia. Chasing a mammoth total of 444, Team India were bowled out for a lowly 234. India’s shambolic performance, quite understandably, baffled many experts and former cricketers. Legendary West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts has now shared his views on India’s WTC final defeat. Talking about the summit clash, Roberts claimed that India underestimated other teams.

<h2>What Andy Roberts said</h2>

“There is this arrogance which has crept into Indian cricket and through this, India have underestimated the rest of the world. India must decide what their focus is—Test cricket or limited overs cricket. T20 cricket will run its course. There is no contest between bat and ball there," Roberts was quoted as saying to Mid-Day.

"I expected India to show their batting strength. I saw no bright spot in the final although Ajinkya Rahane fought hard; got hit on his hand,” Andy Roberts added.

<h2>WTC Final</h2>

Australia batter Travis Head played a fine knock of 163 to guide his side to a solid total of 469. Ajinkya Rahane, who made a comeback in the team, played a gritty knock of 89 in the first innings. The 35-year-old emerged as India’s highest scorer in the game. But India’s top order could not live up to expectations. As a result Rohit Sharma’s men were bowled out for 296 in the first innings. Rahane displayed another courageous show in the second innings after pulling off a praiseworthy knock of 46.&nbsp;

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon picked up four wickets in the second innings to earn an emphatic win for his side.

India will now be aiming to kick off the new WTC cycle with renewed vigour when they take the field against West Indies. India will be involved in a two-match Test series against their Caribbean opponents. The first match of the series is scheduled to start from July 17. Following the conclusion of the Tests, the two sides will take part in white-ball cricket.

Legendary West Indies pacer slams Team India for poor show in WTC final

The World Test Championship (WTC) final turned out to be quite a dismal affair for Team India. While Rohit Sharma’s men had to concede a 209-run defeat at the hands of Australia, it was Virat Kohli who probably had to face the maximum criticism for playing a poor shot in the second innings. Playing a delivery outside the off stump, the India batter fell just one short of his half-century. Kohli’s questionable shot selection infuriated fans and many former cricketers as well. Following the conclusion of the game, the former India skipper has shared multiple cryptic posts on social media. Talking about some ‘change,’ he has now come up with one of Alan Watts’ quotes on Instagram stories.

<h2>Virat Kohli's Post&nbsp;</h2>

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance," Virat Kohli posted today.<img alt="Virat Kohli " data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="6377c4bb-2a35-4682-ac72-8ec363aab4ea" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Screenshot%202023-06-15%20180352.png" />Previously, Virat Kohli had shared a quote by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu’s quote just after India’s WTC final defeat. “Silence is a source of great strength," he wrote.

<h2>Kohli faces criticism</h2>

Sunil Gavaskar was one of many who felt that for Virat Kohli it was not wise to play such a shot in the WTC final. “It was a pretty ordinary shot. Outside the off stump. He was leaving till then. Maybe he was conscious that he needed one run to reach his half century. It happens when you are nearing a milestone. It happened to Jadeja. He played a delivery he shouldn't have when he was (on) 48. Happened to Ajinkya Rahane who was on 46. He hadn't played that shot all this while. Suddenly, why do you play that shot? Because you are aware of that landmark,” the legendary India batter was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

<h2>India's WTC defeat</h2>

In the first innings of the WTC summit clash, Virat Kohli could only manage to score 14 runs. Team India were bundled out for 296. &nbsp;The Pat Cummins-led declared their second innings at 270/8 to set up a mammoth target of 444 for India. Ajinkya Rahane, who made his comeback in the format, produced a gritty knock of 46 in the second innings. His efforts went in vain as India folded for 234.

Virat Kohli talks about 'change' in his cryptic Instagram post

Former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has expressed his surprise at Virat Kohli's unexpected decision to relinquish his role as the captain of the Indian Test cricket team. Ganguly revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was not prepared for Kohli's departure, as it was his personal choice to step down following the South Africa series in 2022.

Fans have been actively campaigning for Kohli's reinstatement as the Test captain, highlighting his remarkable record as captain on social media. During his tenure, Kohli secured the fourth-highest number of victories for an Indian Test captain, with an impressive 40 wins and 11 draws in 68 matches. His win percentage of 50% places him third among all 28 Test captains who have led their teams in 40 or more matches.

In an exclusive interview with Indian news channel Aaj Tak, Ganguly acknowledged the fans' support for Kohli but emphasised that only Kohli himself could provide the reasons behind his decision to step down. Ganguly stated that dwelling on the matter now serves no purpose as the selectors had to appoint a new captain, and Rohit Sharma was deemed the best option at that time.

"BCCI was not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an India captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time," Ganguly said.

However, Kohli had said something in a completely different note. The RCB Captain had said, “There was no prior communication to me at all from when I announced the T20I captaincy decision until the eighth (of December) where, as I said, I got a call one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting," hinting at a clear rift between him and the board.

Virat Kohli's captaincy stint in Test cricket was highly successful, guiding India to the final of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021. Under his leadership, India achieved several milestones, and Kohli became the most successful Test captain in Indian cricket history at the time of his departure.

Sourav Ganguly claims he didn’t know Virat Kohli was quitting Test captaincy

India are set to take on Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final, which kicks off on Wednesday (June 07) at The Oval, London. While Virat Kohli-led India dominated the inaugural WTC cycle and entered the final, they lost to New Zealand by eight wickets in the summit clash. Thus, Rohit Sharma's India will be eager to get past the finish line in the second cycle.

Ahead of facing Pat Cummins-led Australia, who are one spot below No. 1 ranked India,&nbsp;veteran off-spinner R Ashwin revealed that head coach Rahul Dravid's speech after India's three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the Dhaka Test, in late 2022, will be the highlight for him in this current WTC cycle. Unlike the first cycle, India did not dominate to reach the final but was made to work hard. They had to whitewash hosts Bangladesh in a two-match series, held last December but were staring at defeat in the final Test.

Dismissing Bangladesh for 227 in the first essay, KL Rahul &amp; Co. made 314 and then bundled out the Bangla Tigers for 231. In pursuit of 145, India was 74 for 7 before Shreyas Iyer (29 not out) and R Ashwin's (42*) unbeaten 71-run eighth-wicket stand took India to a 2-0 victory. Ashwin recalled Dravid's speech after the win and told the ICC, "We’ve had our moments in this last cycle, especially where we could have been knocked out quite a few times and have just held tight. I think the moment of the WTC, I don’t know irrespective of what happens in this game, would be Rahul (Dravid) bhai’s speech after the Bangladesh Test that we had at Mirpur."

<h2>'I think WTC final&nbsp;could be lucky number two for us'</h2>

He opined, "I think we were just going to be knocked out of the WTC race in that particular Test, so we finished the game and I came out and was really pumped up, I don’t think we expected... nobody expected us to win, even inside the dressing room. Rahul just said, ‘It was a great game of cricket and Ash, we were never in doubt’. That is probably the moment of the WTC cycle as far as I’m concerned.

“Like he (Dravid) said, we were never in doubt, even though we went through the ride. I think in the last cycle we really quite dominated and got into the Final. This time we’ve had our ups and downs, and that’s probably why I think this particular game could be lucky number two for us," Ashwin concluded.

Rahul Dravid's speech will be this WTC cycle's moment, says R Ashwin ahead of Australia finale

Ahead of No. 1 ranked India's upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final versus Australia, former Indian batter-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar lavished praise on Rohit Sharma's batting in Tests. The veteran opined that the Indian captain's batting in the purest format of the game has become almost faultless in recent times.

Ever since Rohit was promoted as a Test opener&nbsp;in late 2019, he has cemented his spot in the red-ball format with five hundreds and a double ton. Even in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, the Hitman ended as his side's third-highest run-getter with a best of 120 in the series opener. He has scored 650 runs at 34.21 in 11 Tests versus the Aussies and, hence, will be eager to get going this time around as well.

<h2>'Test cricket seems to be the most exciting format for Rohit Sharma'</h2>

Ahead of India's marquee finale, Manjrekar told on the Star Sports show&nbsp;Game Plan, "Keep his IPL form (in the 2023 edition, he ended with 332 runs in 16 matches) aside because he looked out of form in the last IPL as well but we saw the amazing batting he did in the first Test match against Australia. I believe the stage of his career Rohit Sharma is in, Test cricket seems to be the most exciting format for him just like it has always been for Virat Kohli."

Manjrekar claimed that&nbsp;Rohit's batting is almost faultless right now but spoke about his knack for getting out on the pull shot; one of his favourite strokes. "His batting has become almost faultless in Test cricket at the moment. There is just one problem we have seen in Test matches - he gets out while playing the pull shot at times. They have bowled him a short ball and kept a fielder there. That is an instinctive shot," he asserted.

Manjrekar further added, "If you see in ODI cricket, his pull shot is extremely interesting. His backlift doesn't come from the top, so he can play the ball down. He has a very low back lift, he just picks up the ball and the bat then goes behind his back in the follow-through to give the power."

In the inaugural WTC final, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team lost to New Zealand by eight wickets and, hence, Rohit &amp; Co. will be desperate to get their hands on the coveted Test mace.&nbsp;

The match will kick off on June 07 at The Oval, London. The last time Rohit played in England, during the 2021 summer, he ended up scoring an impressive&nbsp;127 at the same venue,&nbsp;his first overseas ton in whites.

WTC Final: Rohit's Test batting has become almost faultless, opines Manjrekar ahead of mega clash

No. 1 ranked Rohit Sharma-led Team India will face Australia in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, London on June 07. The match will present India with another opportunity to end their ten-year-long ICC title drought. Since their 2013 Champions Trophy triumph, under MS Dhoni's leadership, India have not won an ICC title. Since then, they have ended as runners-up thrice (in the 2014 T20 World Cup, 2017 Champions Trophy and 2021 WTC final) and ended as semi-finalists on four occasions.&nbsp;

Thus, India will be eager to lay their&nbsp;hands on their first ICC trophy since 2013 when they face second-ranked Australia in the second WTC final. Ahead of the match, the former Aussie opener decoded the reason behind India's struggles in winning an ICC event since 2013.&nbsp;Speaking to PTI, Hayden said that India's title drought is down to a mindset issue.

<h2>'It has to be a question of....'</h2>

"It's certainly not a question of skill. So, it has to be a question of just the opportunity and the mindset going in. I mean, cricket is life here, it is the DNA of sport and has no other competitors," Hayden said.

Further, Hayden also spoke about the pressure Indian players deal with and said, "In Australia, I could walk down the street and largely be unrecognised, especially with this terrible beard and hat on (laughs). But it's also got great competitive sports besides cricket. Rugby, football, our water sports, surfing, and outdoor sports. Here in India, it's very insular and there's a lot of pressure." He added, "It's the same with Pakistan cricket as well. There is one sport and it is cricket, so it's a mindset thing."

Hayden advised the Indian team to focus on the process and not think&nbsp;about the outcomes. "Being cautious about looking for the scoreboard and looking for the titles and just playing and being a part of the process, something when you look at franchise setups, Gujarat Titans have done really well this year and CSK have done very well. Mumbai Indians as well believe in a certain process. So, that would be my advice to Indian cricket to forget the outcomes, but buy into the process,"&nbsp;Hayden added.

Speaking to PTI, Hayden said that India's title drought is down to a mindset issue. 'It has to be a question of....' "It's certainly not a question of skill. So, it has to be a question of just the opportunity and the mindset going in. I mean, cricket is life here, it is the DNA of sport and has no other competitors," Hayden said. Also Read: WTC Final | Ricky Ponting names two Indian batters who would be major threat to Australia Further, Hayden also spoke about the pressure Indian players deal with and said, "In Australia, I could walk down the street and largely be unrecognised, especially with this terrible beard and hat on (laughs). But it's also got great competitive sports besides cricket. Rugby, football, our water sports, surfing, and outdoor sports. Here in India, it's very insular and there's a lot of pressure." He added, "It's the same with Pakistan cricket as well. There is one sport and it is cricket, so it's a mindset thing." Hayden advised the Indian team to focus on the process and not think about the outcomes. "Being cautious about looking for the scoreboard and looking for the titles and just playing and being a part of the process, something when you look at franchise setups, Gujarat Titans have done really well this year and CSK have done very well. Mumbai Indians as well believe in a certain process. So, that would be my advice to Indian cricket to forget the outcomes, but buy into the process," Hayden added. WTC Final: Former Aussie opener Matthew Hayden decodes reason for India's ICC title drought since 2013

India and Australia are set to meet in the forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final on June 07 (Wednesday) at The Oval, London. All eyes will be on India's new sensation Shubman Gill, who has been in sublime form since August 2022. Gill has scored hundreds at regular intervals across formats&nbsp;ever since he slammed his maiden ODI ton during the Men in Blue's tour of Zimbabwe last August. Before the WTC final, India's head coach Rahul Dravid showered huge praise on Gill and also stated that Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. are very excited for the one-off Test battle versus Australia.

Speaking to Star Sports, Dravid said, "Really exciting for all the players to be playing this game again. There’s a lot of work that leads to this match. You play two years and a lot of Test series and results need to go your way. The opportunity to get to play this game is certainly well-deserved. Test cricket in England is always special and has great significance."

<h2>'Shubman Gill&nbsp;has been a class player since I saw him during his Under-19 days'</h2>

“Shubman has always been a star player. He has been a class player when I saw him from his Under-19 days. He came into the U-19 World Cup and was already earmarked as someone who would become a very special player. He has been great, he’s had a few years with the team, he’s been in and out of the side a little bit, and he’s finding his feet in international cricket,” Dravid further added.

Gill was part of India's playing XI during the inaugural WTC final versus New Zealand. He will be determined to make the most of his splendid form in the upcoming WTC finale and lead India to their first-ever ICC title since 2013. Gill scored a majestic 128 in the last Test held between India and Australia, during the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, and will be confident taking on the Pat Cummins-led Aussie bowling attack.&nbsp;

'Shubman Gill has always been...': India coach Rahul Dravid lauds young batter ahead of WTC Final vs Australia

IPL 2023 edition ended in the early hours on Tuesday (May 30) with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerging on top of defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) to win their fifth title overall. MS Dhoni &amp; Co. ended second in the points table after the end of the league stage before being the first team to enter the final with a win in Qualifier 1. In the summit clash, they won by five wickets (DLS method) in a rain-marred contest.

Opting to bowl first, the Yellow Army were in for a leather hunt as GT rode on Shubman Gill's 39 (20), Wriddhiman Saha's 39-ball 54, and Sai Sudharsan's 96 (47) to post 214/4. In reply, CSK needed 171 in 15 overs, after a lengthy rain break, and chased down the score courtesy of quickfire knocks from Ruturaj Gaikwad (16-ball 26), Devon Conway's 25-ball 47, Ajinkya Rahane's 13-ball 27, Shivam Dube's 32* (21), Ambati Rayudu's 8-ball 18 and Ravindra Jadeja's 6-ball 15*.

Recently, former Pakistan captain and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja reviewed the recently-concluded IPL season and said it will be remembered for the 'colour yellow and for MS Dhoni'. He heaped praises on the Indian legend and said his 'humility, captaincy and calmness will be remembered for ages'.

<h2>'IPL 2023 will be remembered for MS Dhoni'</h2>

"This IPL will be remembered for the colour yellow, and for MS Dhoni. His humility, the Dhonimania, his captaincy, his calmness, and his keeping will be remembered for ages. But most of all, this IPL will be remembered for the moment when a legend like Sunil Gavaskar asked MS Dhoni to sign an autograph on his shirt. There cannot be a bigger compliment for MS Dhoni," Ramiz&nbsp;said on his YouTube channel.

Fans gathered in large numbers in every CSK game&nbsp;to catch a glimpse of Dhoni, who most believe played his last season. However, after winning the final, Dhoni said he will aim to play in the next edition&nbsp;if his body permits.&nbsp;

Further, Ramiz also hailed India's young stars and&nbsp;highlighted that&nbsp;even big-ticket&nbsp;players&nbsp;were benched (for example, Quinton de Kock for the Lucknow franchise) whereas coaching staffs filled with big names also could not inspire many teams (Hyderabad ended at the bottom despite the presence of head coach Brian Lara, bowling coach Dale Steyn).

He said, "It will be remembered for young batting talent, the likes of Rinku Singh, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad. These are stars who’ll decorate these grounds for many years to come. The season will also be remembered for the big names that were benched and players from small nations who made a big mark. For the fact that even if you have big names in the coaching staff in the dugout, there’s no guarantee of success for the teams (Hyderabad had big names in their coaching staff but ended last)."

Ramiz further added, "This IPL will be remembered for the fans, for great shot-making and for great catching. Even bowlers&nbsp;took their game up in pressure situations. The tournament will be remembered for Gujarat Titans’ bowling and leg spin bowling. This IPL had a wow factor. There has never been a spectacle as big in IPL history.”

His humility, captaincy and calmness will be remembered for ages: Ramiz Raja lauds MS Dhoni

India vs Australia, WTC 2023 Final: Team India's road to the summit clash

MS Dhoni won his ninth T20 title as captain when the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2023 final in Ahmedabad in the early hours on Tuesday (May 30). After the win, Dhoni joined Rohit with as many as five IPL titles each as captain. Following IPL 2023 edition, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt compared Dhoni and Rohit and made a big statement on the current Indian captain's fitness.

<h2>'World of difference between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma'</h2>

During a YouTube live session, a fan asked Butt to compare Dhoni and Rohit in terms of fitness and he said, “There's a world of difference between the two. Rohit Sharma has a big designation, he's the captain of India. He should be leading by example in all aspects, and fitness is a very important aspect. As a captain, when you are in a position to demand something from your teammates, you should have it yourself. You should be top of the line."

“When you look at Rohit Sharma, you realise that fitness is one aspect where he can be a lot better. It will improve his batting and confidence as well. But we are talking about it for a long time now. I don't know why he isn't fit enough. Maybe he knows the reason himself,” he further added.

While ardent cricket fans often compare the captaincy styles of Dhoni and Rohit, the former was always ahead of many in terms of fitness. Even at 41, the former Indian skipper pulled off the entire IPL 2023 edition despite nursing a knee injury. He blasted 104 runs in 57 balls, at over 180, and remained an asset behind the stumps. During his playing days for India, he was one of the fastest between wickets and remained so even after retirement but injury concerns forced him to go for the big shots and not rely on a lot of running while batting for CSK in the just-concluded edition.

Talking about Rohit, he has suffered various injuries in the recent past. However, he remains a safe fielder and runner between wickets. At present, he is gearing up to lead India in the forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final where the national side will face Australia at The Oval, London on June 07.

World of difference between Dhoni and Rohit: Former Pak captain makes big statement on Indian captain

From T20 World Cup 2007 to IPL 2023 triumph: Listing Captain Cool MS Dhoni's nine T20 trophies

Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) had a solid squad for the IPL 2023 edition. Despite a strong start, they lost the way in the second half of the tournament to bow out from the playoffs race. The one-time winners finished second and many believe their poor usage of the Impact Player rule, silly mistakes in crunch situations and below-par returns of two premier batters such as Jos Buttler and skipper Samson led to their elimination.

Samson ended IPL 2023 with 362 runs in 14 matches, at a strike rate of 153.38, including three half-centuries. Over the years, Samson has created a huge fanbase for himself, including several former cricketers. But many believe he often does not do justice to his overall talent and skills. In this year's edition, he struck at a good rate but consistency eluded him once again.

During IPL 2023 league stage, former India pacer S Sreesanth revealed that Little Master Sunil Gavaskar gave a suggestion to Samson, however, the latter followed his own style of batting. Talking to Star Sports, Sreesanth backed Samson but revealed he wasn't pleased with the latter's response to Gavaskar.&nbsp;

"I support Sanju because he played under my captaincy in U-14. In the past 4-5 years, when I see him as a cricketer, I've always told him to perform in first-class cricket, not just IPL. Produce consistent performances. Ishan Kishan, and Rishabh Pant -- both were and still are ahead of him. Pant is not there, but he will make a comeback. I met him recently, he firmly believes he can come back within 6-to-8 months."

“But in this IPL, the way Sanju got out in 2-3 matches straight... Gavaskar sir told him, 'give yourself at least 10 balls. Read the wicket. We know you have a lot of talent, even if you have 0 runs in 12 balls, you can score 50 in 25'. When RR lost in one of their last matches in the league phase, Sanju said, 'no, my style is to play like this only'. I couldn't digest that,” Sreesanth added.

Given Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant injured with the ODI World Cup only few months away, Samson still has a chance to feature in India's ODI squad. However, he will need to be more consistent to be in India's white-ball scheme of things.

Ever since India were eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2022, in the semi-finals, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, etc. have not featured in India's T20I scheme of things with Hardik Pandya serving as the captain. Many believe it is the end of the road for Kohli and Rohit in the shortest format with a plethora of young Indian batters showcasing their skills in the IPL.

Nonetheless, nothing official has come out from the BCCI selectors on Kohli and Rohit's T20I future. Recently, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar was asked about Kohli's T20I future and the veteran believes his form in IPL 2024 'should be observed' before taking a call on his selection.

Gavaskar told Sports Tak: "The next T20 World Cup will be played in 2024. There will be another IPL before that in March-April. He asserted, "Kohli's form should be observed at that point. There is no point talking about it now. If we are talking about an upcoming T20 international, say India are playing a match in June, then he definitely fits into the team, the kind of form that he has shown.

"But, speaking about the 2024 World Cup, which will be held in West Indies and America, the form of players needs to be observed in the IPL before that and then we can talk about selection for the World Cup squad. Virat would definitely be in my T20I team on current form for India’s upcoming matches in the format. He has scored two hundreds [in IPL 2023]. Team India batter KL Rahul lauded legendary captain MS Dhoni and decoded his success. In a recent interaction, Rahul spoke at length about Dhoni's greatness and as a captain and revealed the reason behind his staggering success. Under Dhoni, India won all three major ICC titles, attained the No. 1 Test team ranking for the first time whereas he has also led the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to four IPL and two Champions League (CLT20) trophies.

“MS Dhoni was my first captain. I've seen how he has handled the team, the calmness and the things that he does behind the scenes. Building the relationship with each person is something I've learnt from him. You need to build a relationship where these boys will fight for you, and with you,” Rahul told YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, more commonly known as&nbsp;BeerBiceps.

<h2>'Every cricket lover's dream to be in the dressing room and be captained by MS Dhoni'</h2>

The versatile Indian batter Rahul further opined, "I've realised much later, once when he retired and now he's not part of dressing room, I realised the presence of that man and the greatness that was a part of him. It's probably every cricket lover's dream to be in the dressing room and be captained by MS Dhoni. He's very simple in his approach, what you see is what you get. Even on the field, he is very calm. It's not just that he's being that way. He's very balanced in everything that he does."

"He has ways of building a relationship with each person. The bond that he creates... he has his own way. And he will know what's happening with each individual, personally and in his game. He knows everything about everybody, and that's what made him such a great leader."

“He said this to me a lot of times... trust your gut as a captain. That's something he did, as a leader and as a person in general. The first thought that you get, you always question it, but he never questioned it. If he had a gut feeling about a certain thing, he would never try to question it or second-guess it. He did it, whether it went well or didn't go well. That's what helped him in a lot of ways. That's why he was unorthodox in a lot of ways, people didn't understand at the time but he trusted his gut feeling. That's why he got results too,” Rahul added.

At present, Rahul is out of cricketing action after suffering an injury in IPL 2023. His franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are close to attaining a playoff berth whereas Dhoni-led CSK are a spot above Lucknow, in the second position, and also aiming to finish in the top-two to feature in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2023 playoffs.

At 41, Dhoni continues to be a huge source of inspiration for cricketers around the globe due to his unorthodox wicketkeeping, finishing skills, captaincy and overall contribution to Indian cricket. It is widely speculated that Dhoni is playing his last IPL season and will retire after the ongoing edition.

'He trusted his...': KL Rahul decodes legendary captain MS Dhoni's success

KL Rahul's form has been a topic of discussion since the beginning of 2023. The right-hander has not had a great run in the highest level since the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. While he did play a few good knocks in the marquee event, his strike rate was a below-par&nbsp;120.75. He started the 2022 Bangladesh tour with a fifty in the three-match ODI series opener before losing out on form. Since then, he has not made significant contributions and was dropped from India's playing XI during the final two matches of the four-match Test series versus Australia, at home,&nbsp;prior to IPL 2023.

In the IPL, Rahul led the Lucknow Super Giants and returned with&nbsp;274 runs in nine games, at a dismal strike rate of 113.22, before bowing out due to injury concerns. Due to his inconsistent graph and strike rate issues, Rahul has been severely criticised on social media platforms and recently opened up on online trolls.&nbsp;

Speaking on The Ranveer Show, Rahul said, "That's something that sometimes affects me and affects a lot of the other boys as well that when we athletes truly need support, people feel they can or have the power to comment or say what they want. Just see what that person is going through. None of us wants to perform badly. This is our life. This is all we do. Like I said, I don't know anything else apart from cricket."

He added, "That's the only thing I do. Why would anyone assume that I am not serious about my game or that I am not working hard enough? And unfortunately in sports, there is no connection. Like I said you can work hard, like I work hard but the result didn't go my way."

Rahul has been out of action after the 31-year-old tore a tendon in his right leg in LSG's home game versus the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during match 43 of the IPL 2023 edition. He had a successful surgery and has started his recovery process.

People feel they have the power to comment or say what they want: KL Rahul hits back at online trolls

Delhi Capitals (DC) have had a torrid run in IPL 2023. The David Warner-led side were on the back foot before the ongoing season commenced with regular captain Rishabh Pant out of action after a horrific accident on December 30, 2022. Since the start of the season, DC struggled for momentum and while they did achieve some inspiring wins, they became the first team to be eliminated this season after two back-to-back defeats in the last week.&nbsp;

Ever since Ricky Ponting was appointed as the DC head coach, ahead of IPL 2018 (back when the franchise was known as the Delhi Daredevils), the franchise has done considerably well (reaching the playoffs thrice and playing their first-ever final in 2020 edition). However, Ponting-led team management have been criticised for their team combination, underutilisation of key players, etc. in IPL 2023. Thus, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has suggested Sourav Ganguly's name as DC's next head coach.

<h2>GANGULY AS NEXT DC COACH?&nbsp;</h2>

"Sourav Ganguly's presence in the Delhi dugout is a big deal. I think if Dada is given the responsibility of coach as well, he can make a big difference in this team. Dada has knowledge of the psychology of Indian players. He knows how to run the dressing room and Delhi should definitely take advantage of that. At the time of the toss, Warner has said that his team has now started preparing for the next season and in this context, it would not be wrong to see Ganguly in a changed role," said Pathan.

Ganguly was part of the DC setup in IPL 2019 as the team advisor before he came back into the setup as the Director of Cricket before IPL 2023. Ganguly has led IPL teams in the past, such as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the now-defunct Pune Warriors (PWI), but never donned the coaching hat. It will be interesting to see if the DC team management remains intact following their dismal run in IPL 2023. If Ponting is sacked, Ganguly can be a worthy successor.

Only time will tell if DC back their under-fire team management or make wholesome changes ahead of IPL 2024.

IPL 2023: Sourav Ganguly should take over as DC's head coach next season, suggests Irfan Pathan

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has backed Ravi Shastri's recent claims that Team India should move on from the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20I format. In a conversation with ESPNCricinfo, ex-India head coach Ravi Shastri said, "I wanted the selection committee to "start blooding them right now". He then added: "Players like Rohit, Virat Kohli, they are proven, you know what they are all about. I would go in that [good performers in the IPL] direction so that they get the opportunities, they get the exposure."

Now, Chopra has joined the bandwagon and made a big claim. The former Indian batter-turned-commentator feels the trio of Rohit, Kohli and KL Rahul won't feature in India's T20I plans this year with the ODI World Cup being the main agenda, to be held after a few months, in October-November. Chopra added that if India are determined to adapt to a new and more aggressive style of play, then the senior batters won't be able to adjust smoothly and following the superb performances of a plethora of youngsters in ongoing IPL 2023, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Verma, Rinku Singh, etc., it is an apt time to try out the youngsters in the shortest format.

Chopra told Hindustan Times, "I won't see his (Rahul's) case to be in isolation in any way, to begin with. I feel the next generation of cricketers for this format is almost getting ready and the previous generation of players will find it increasingly difficult to be a part of the new template. If India, as they said in the last T20 World Cup that they are looking for a new template to play T20 cricket in, continue to play in the same fashion, you will see a lot of the previous generation players not being part of the T20 scheme of things."

"This is an ODI World Cup year so anyway India will be playing fewer T20I games in the remaining year, but whatever matches they play, I don't think you will see Kohli, Rohit or Rahul play. You don't even know when Rahul will actually be available. That is why I'm saying, things will change in the next 90 days," he asserted.

'I feel in the next 90 days...'

Chopra further asserted, "For Yashasvi I have in fact kept a timeline. I feel he will be in the Indian team in the next 90 days. The other one I feel is Rinku Singh and it is time to take him a lot more seriously. Those five sixes weren't a fluke. He has scored around 400 or more runs and the strike rate at which they have been scored and from that batting position, there is no other option available. Remember, these two aren't just a T20 phenomenon."

Rinku has a first-class average of 60 while Yashasvi has scored over 1000 runs in his short domestic career so far. So they have been performing in other formats as well it is just that the world tends to focus more on a player when it happens in the IPL," the former opener concluded.

Aakash Chopra predicts Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh to replace Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli in T20Is

Yashasvi Jaiswal was on a roll in Rajasthan Royals' (RR) clash versus hosts Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in match 56 of the IPL 2023 edition, on Thursday (May 11). In a crucial game for RR, the one-time winners went past Kolkata with ease as they chased down KKR's 149/8 with nine wickets and 41 balls to spare. Jaiswal was the star performer as he slammed a splendid 47-ball 98 not out, also scoring the fastest IPL half century off just 13 balls.

After the game, former England captain Michael Vaughan made a big statement. Taking to Twitter, Vaughan wrote, “I would have selected @ybj_19 as KL Rahul's replacement for the World Test championship final … He is that good .. he is going to be a superstar .. #India.”

WTC Final: ‘Would’ve selected Yashasvi Jaiswal as Rahul’s replacement’ - Michael Vaughan's big remark

Australia have maintained their dominance at the top in the ICC ODI rankings, released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday (May 11). After the latest update, which weights games completed prior to May 2022 at 50 per cent and subsequent matches at 100 per cent, the Men in Yellow hold the top spot with 118 rating points, two ahead of second-placed Pakistan.

Recently, Australia had conceded the top spot to Babar Azam-led Pakistan after the Men in Green took a 4-0 lead over New Zealand, at home, in the just-concluded five-match series. However, the one-time ODI champions could not hold onto the numero uno position for more than two days as they had to win the NZ series 5-0. They lost the series finale by 47 runs to let go of the first position.&nbsp;

Recently, Australia had conceded the top spot to Babar Azam-led Pakistan after the Men in Green took a 4-0 lead over New Zealand, at home, in the just-concluded five-match series. However, the one-time ODI champions could not hold onto the numero uno position for more than two days as they had to win the NZ series 5-0. They lost the series finale by 47 runs to let go of the first position. India, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh have directly qualified for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, to be held in India in October-November. ICC ODI rankings: Australia maintain dominance at top, India one spot below arch-rivals Pakistan

Seeing Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed shine bright for the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2023, former England spinner Graeme Swann made a glaring remark. Swann believes every nation should be jealous of India for the number of wrist spinners they have except Afghanistan. Citing Noor and Rashid's success, as the duo have together accounted for 30 scalps so far for GT in this year's IPL, Swann spoke highly of the two and even claimed Afghanistan can win the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup due to their spin department.

During a media interaction, the Englishman said, "Every nation should be jealous that India have so many good wrist spinners in the country. The only nation that shouldn't be jealous is Afghanistan. Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad are possibly the best two bowlers in the world currently. Afghanistan can win the World Cup if they keep going. It is to be noted that the former England spinner is an IPL expert with Jio Cinema - the official digital broadcaster of IPL 2023.

At present, Rashid has accounted for 19 wickets -- second-overall -- for the Hardik Pandya-led defending champions whereas Noor, who is in his debut season, has claimed 11 wickets at an economy rate of&nbsp;6.94. Thus, Noor can well be in the reckoning to be a part of Afghanistan's ODI World Cup squad, to be held in India later this year. So far, he has only played one ODI and a solitary T20I but given his run in the ongoing IPL season, his experience can come in handy for his national side.&nbsp;

Hardik-led Gujarat occupy the top-spot in the IPL 2023 points table, with 16 points from 11 games. They next face the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (M) in match 57 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Another win will confirm them a spot in the playoffs and also a top-two finish.

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 54 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (May 09). At the eighth place in the points table, MI will be desperate to earn a win and keep their playoffs chances alive at the Wankede Stadium, Mumbai.&nbsp;

For MI, their middle-order has done really well whereas none apart from Piyush Chawla has been consistent or very threatening with the ball. Talking about skipper Rohit, he has only amassed 184 runs in ten games, at a strike rate of 126.89. He averages only&nbsp;18.39 and has been a pale shadow of himself in this IPL. Ahead of the RCB tie, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag opined on Hitman's form.&nbsp;

"Rohit Sharma is not battling with the bowlers but with himself. There is a mental block," Sehwag said on Star Sports' Cricket Live. He added, "There's no problem with his batting technique. Some confusion is going on in his mind. But the day he gets going, we will make up for all the previous matches."

Spin-to-win mantra for Rohit Sharma-led Team India?

“The Indian team has performed well on slow tracks in the past few years at home. So the team management had requested that whenever the schedule is being prepared the Indian team should face top teams on slow pitches. They wanted to have a home advantage,” a source in the BCCI said.

It is believed, as per the same report, that the BCCI will be announcing the forthcoming ODI&nbsp;World Cup schedule at a grand launch following the conclusion of IPL 2023.

This will be the first time that India will host the 50-over showpiece event entirely on its own. In 2011, India co-hosted the mega event, along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and won the championship after 28 years. In the following two editions, the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

ODI WC: Team India requests BCCI for spin-friendly venues vs Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa

Team India retained their top spot in the latest ICC T20I rankings released on Tuesday (May 02). India have been dominating the top spot in the shortest format and bolstered their position as they now lead second-ranked and current T20 champions England by eight points. Meanwhile, the likes of New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa occupy the third, fourth and fifth spots respectively.&nbsp;

India have been very consistent in T20Is since 2020 despite not having a great run in the last two T20 World Cups. In 2021, the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue bowed out of the Super 10 round whereas India, under Rohit Sharma, reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 WC but crashed out with a ten-wicket loss at the hands of eventual winners England. Since last year's T20 WC, in Australia, India have been led by Hardik Pandya as Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and few other seniors have not featured in the shortest format, to concentrate on the longer formats due to the upcoming&nbsp;WTC final, in June, and ODI World Cup later this year.

Under Hardik, India defeated the likes of New Zealand (both home and away) and Sri Lanka in the shortest format.&nbsp;

"The new rankings reflect all T20I series completed since May 2020, with those completed prior to May 2022 weighted at 50 per cent and every subsequent series weighted at 100 per cent," it further stated. IPL 2023: RCB name THIS Indian 2019 ODI WC member as David Willey's replacement

Rohit Sharma-led India will face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, London on June 07. At present, the Indian cricketers are involved in the IPL 2023 edition and the WTC final-bound players will be eager to remain fit to take part in the WTC finale. Rohit, who has had quite a few injury concerns in the past, will be desperate to lead the charge and take India to their first-ever ICC title since 2013 with a memorable win over Australia.&nbsp;

Recently, former India head coach Ravi Shastri stated that if Rohit misses the WTC final due to unforeseen circumstances, Virat Kohli -- Rohit's predecessor -- can lead the side. In addition, he believes Kohli should have led India in the one-off Test versus England, in Birmingham, after Rohit had to sit out for testing positive for Covid-19.

“If it’s for a major game like that (upcoming WTC final), then yes (for&nbsp;Kohli to be the stand-in captain in case Rohit misses out). I mean, you want Rohit to be fit as he is the captain of the side. In case of unforeseen circumstances, definitely, I will look in that direction,” Shastri was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo.

The former Indian all-rounder further opined, "Once Rohit was injured (talking about the India-England Birmingham Test 2022), I thought he would be asked. If I was still there, I would have asked. I’m not sure Rahul (Dravid) would have done the same thing, I haven’t spoken to him. I would have recommended to the board as it’s only fair if he leads because he is part of the team that is leading 2-1 in the series."

With Rohit ruled out due to Covid-19, Jasprit Bumrah led India in the Birmingham Test, which was the fifth and final Test of the India-England 2021 series. The fifth Test was postponed in the 2021 English summer due to the Covid crisis in the Indian camp. Back then, Kohli was the Indian captain when the visitors earned an unassailable 2-1 lead prior to the fifth Test's postponement.

The rescheduled fifth and final Test saw India fail to defend a 378-run target and lose to Ben Stokes-led England by seven wickets.

At present, the Indian cricketers are involved in the IPL 2023 edition and the WTC final-bound players will be eager to remain fit to take part in the WTC finale. Rohit, who has had quite a few injury concerns in the past, will be desperate to lead the charge and take India to their first-ever ICC title since 2013 with a memorable win over Australia. “If it’s for a major game like that (upcoming WTC final), then yes (for Kohli to be the stand-in captain in case Rohit misses out). I mean, you want Rohit to be fit as he is the captain of the side. In case of unforeseen circumstances, definitely, I will look in that direction,” Shastri was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo.
