India will lock horns with South Africa in the first Test of the upcoming three-match Test series at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on December 26. The Boxing Day game is all set to be a blockbuster encounter with India heading into the game on a confident note after beating New Zealand 1-0 in the recently-concluded two-match Test series at home.

Ahead of the start of the first Test, India have some major selection headaches with the likes of Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer competing for a spot in the middle-order, while Ajinkya Rahane's place in the playing XI remains in a doubt. Former India batter Wasim Jaffer has picked his predicted playing XI for India ahead of the first Test.

While Rahane's struggles have been well documented in the last few Test series, Iyer is in contention for a spot in the middle-order after his magnificent debut against New Zealand where he slammed a hundred and a fifty in the two innings of his first Test. Vihari, who scored three half-centuries for India A against South Africa A, is also a strong contender to make the cut.

However, Jaffer believed the team should go with Rahane in the first Test owing to his experience and the leadership qualities he brings in. Jaffer picked Iyer over Vihari considering his recent exploits in the debut series against New Zealand at home.

"KL and Mayank will open. Pujara at number three [and] Virat Kohli at four. I'll play Ajinkya at number five. There's a lot of debate regarding his form and between him Shreyas Iyer and Vihari. For the first Test, I'll definitely prefer Ajinkya because he has the experience, the skill.

"Yes, his recent form is debatable but he has scored runs in South Africa and knows the conditions well. And he brings a lot more to the table than just batting - [like leadership] when he was the captain [or] as a slip fielder," Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

Jaffer also picked India's bowling attack for the first Test against South Africa. He named three pacers - Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj in the attack while naming R Ashwin as the only spinner in the playing XI.

"I'll prefer Shreyas Iyer for number six because of his recent form and how he batted against New Zealand. I'll prefer him over Vihari. Vihari had a good series with India 'A', he made pretty good runs in similar conditions, but that was India 'A' series and not Tests. So I'll prefer somebody who scored runs in Tests. Number seven would be Rishabh Pant, number eight would be Ashwin and nine ten eleven would be Bumrah, Shami and Mohammed Siraj," he added.

India have never won a Test series in South Africa and have so far managed only three victories in Test matches in the country. However, this time around, Virat Kohli & Co. are a stronger unit compared to the hosts and have a great chance of scripting history by winning their maiden Test series against the Proteas in their own backyard.

Shreyas Iyer or Hanuma Vihari? Wasim Jaffer names India's predicted XI for 1st Test against South Africa

There are plenty of things happening in Indian cricket at present. With contrasting statements from Test captain Virat Kohli and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly regarding the recent ODI captaincy switch and the former's T20I captaincy resignation, not everything is at ease in Indian cricket. Amid all this, the senior men's cricket team has arrived in South Africa where they play three Tests and as many ODIs, starting from December 26.

Under Kohli, India have won a Test series in Australia and gained an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests early this year in the United Kingdom. Now, the focus has shifted to the SA Tests.

While India have won Test series in England, Australia (twice recently) and in New Zealand to date, they are yet to win a series in whites on South African soil. Thus, not only the experienced Indian campaigners will have to stand tall but even the young guns will have to contribute to script history.

Ahead of the SA Tests, which gets underway from December 26, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly lauded Indian young batter Shreyas Iyer and is 'hopeful' of him delivering the goods overseas, starting from the series in the African nation.

For the unversed, Iyer had a memorable debut series versus New Zealand at home. He returned with 202 runs, at 50.50, to end as India's highest run-getter (second overall) with a fifty and hundred.

Real test will be in SA: BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly 'hopeful' of Indian batter delivering the goods overseas

Venkatesh Iyer's rise has been a phenomenal one. He is one of the most exciting youngsters in Indian cricket at present and has already made his T20 debut for the country after impressing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Iyer is in line to make his ODI debut after playing T20Is for India and is likely to be named in the ODI squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.

Iyer had played an instrumental role in helping KKR reach the final of IPL 2021 with his splendid performances in the second leg of the tournament in UAE. In his debut campaign in the IPL, Iyer scored 370 runs and picked up 3 wickets in the tournament and has continued his purple patch in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy where he is currently the second-highest run-getter of the tournament with 348 runs from four matches so far.

With Hardik Pandya currently recovering from his injury at the National Cricket Academy, selectors are certain to pick Iyer as an all-rounder in India's ODI squad for the South Africa series, as per a report in PTI. Besides his explosive batting, Iyer has also been impressive with the ball in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has eight wickets to his name in four matches in the tournament.

"Venkatesh is surely going to South Africa. He is bowling 9 or 10 overs in every game and with Hardik still recuperating, it is the best time to give him chance and get him battle-ready for the bigger events ahead," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

While he is an opening batter, Iyer is likely to be used in the middle-order for India and can be groomed as a finisher looking forward to the T20 World Cup next year and the ODI World Cup in 2023. With captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul set to continue as openers and Ishan Kishan also in the fray, Iyer will have to adapt to middle-order.

"The new team management absolutely did the right thing in advising him to bat in the middle order. As of now, if he doesn't get injured, Venkatesh is a certainty for the South Africa one-dayers," said the BCCI source.

Apart from Iyer, another youngster who is in contention to feature in the ODI squad is Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been absolutely bossing it with the bat in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy after a stellar IPL 2021 season where he bagged the Orange Cap for being the highest run-getter of the tournament.

While Gaikwad has been knocking at the selectors' door for a while now, the right-hander might still be behind Shikhar Dhawan in the pecking order. Dhawan is likely to get a few chances in the ODI series against South Africa before he is sidelined for someone like Gaikwad.

"Technically, last time India played 50-over series, Dhawan was leading India and also had a match-winning knock in Sri Lanka," the BCCI source told PTI.

"He has the ability to score runs just when he has back to the wall. So while Gaikwad should be there in the squad, I think selectors might give one last chance to Dhawan, maybe take him and give him a game or two," he added.

Venkatesh Iyer set for ODI debut, likely to be named in squad for South Africa tour - Report

Hanuma Vihari was dropped from India's Test squad for the recently-concluded two-match series against New Zealand at home. The middle-order batter, who was last seen in action for Team India on the tour of Australia last year, was sent to South Africa with India A side to take part in the unofficial Test series against South Africa A.

However, Vihari is now back in the squad for India's upcoming tour of South Africa later this month. Team India will play three Tests in the rainbow nation starting from December 26. With Shreyas Iyer impressing in the middle-order in his debut Test series against the Kiwis, the Indian team management is set to face a selection headache.

Both Vihari and Iyer are in contention to feature in the middle-order against South Africa and it remains to be seen who will make the cut in the playing XI for the first Test. Ahead of the tour, former India chief selector MSK Prasad has weighed in on the debate and said Vihari deserved a place in the squad for the New Zealand series at home instead of being sent with the India A team.

"First, of all, he was deserving of a place in the squad for the New Zealand series at home. I think since he was not going to get an opportunity, they would have sent him for India A tour. Now in the 2nd unofficial Test, he has hit two (three) half-centuries. Yes, having somebody who has done well in away series in England, Australia and West Indies. If you are looking at a youngster, then Hanuma Vihari should be played," Prasad was quoted as saying by India Today.

Vihari showcased great form in the series against South Africa A and slammed three consecutive fifties. He has done well overseas for Team India and can also send down a few overs if required. However, Prasad believes the selection will depend on the conditions and what role the Indian team management is expecting the two batters to play in the Test series.

"A lot depends on what they are expecting from the player, the role he is going to play. Hanuma Vihari is a guy who is solid in his technique. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer is someone who can bring in a little aggression," explained Prasad.

"So it all depends on the batting order and what kind of role that the team management expects of their middle-order batter. Based on that, one of them can be given an opportunity," he added.

Hanuma Vihari or Shreyas Iyer? MSK Prasad gives his take on middle-order conundrum ahead of SA series

Rohit Sharma has replaced Virat Kohli as Team India's white-ball captain ahead of the team's tour of South Africa later this month. It will be the beginning of a new era for the Indian team under Rohit's leadership with a T20 World Cup and an ODI World Cup lined up in the next two years.

The move to replace Kohli as ODI captain came as a surprise to many as the Indian batter had made it clear in October this year that he is keen to lead the national team in Tests and ODIs after reliving the T20 captaincy. However, his captaincy stint in limited-overs cricket was cut short by BCCI, who opted for one captain for white-ball cricket.

While the move has drawn mixed reactions from fans and former cricketers, it remains to be seen who will take over the vice-captaincy spot in ODIs left vacant by Rohit after he was elevated to captaincy. BCCI is yet to announce India's vice-captain in ODIs ahead of the South Africa tour. Here is a look at three top candidates for vice-captaincy -

1) KL Rahul

KL Rahul was appointed as Rohit Sharma's deputy for his first T20I series as full-time captain of the Indian team against New Zealand at home. Rahul is favourite to take over as vice-captain in ODIs as well. He is one of the few players who is a regular in both ODIs and T20Is for India and has been a consistent performer with the bat. He also has the experience of leading Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League.

2) Rishabh Pant

India's first-choice wicket-keeper in white-ball cricket, Rishabh Pant can also be a good fit as a vice-captain looking ahead. Pant has been exceptional in Tests recently and has also cemented his spot in both ODIs and T20Is. He led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in IPL 2021 and has been maturing as a leader. He can be groomed for a future leadership role as Rohit's deputy in ODIs at present.

3) Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has been around the Indian setup for a while now as far as ODIs and T20Is are concerned. Though he was not part of the T20 World Cup 2021's main squad, he is seen as a vital cog in India's batting line-up and has proved his leadership qualities at Delhi Capitals in the IPL. 3 players who can become India's vice-captain after Rohit Sharma replaces Virat Kohli as ODI skipper

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has made some startling revelations regarding Team India's squad selection for the 2019 ODI World Cup. Many were left shocked at the time after Ambati Rayudu, who was India's designated number 4. batter in the build-up to the World Cup, was surprisingly left out of the squad with all-rounder Vijay Shankar making the cut.

Shastri has revealed he wanted Rayudu or Shreyas Iyer in the squad as the no.4 batter while questioning the bizarre selection of three wicket-keepers in the team. While Shankar was selected over Rayudu, an injury to opener Shikhar Dhawan saw India rope in Rishabh Pant as a replacement when there were already two wicket-keeper batters in the team - MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik.

Skipper Virat Kohli had openly admitted in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup that Rayudu will be India's no.4 batter in the showpiece event, however, the senior batted was snubbed by the national selectors. Opening up on India's bizarre team selection for the 2019 ODI World Cup, Shastri insisted he has no say in the decision-making and said there was no logic behind having three wicket-keepers in the squad.

“I had no say in that (team selection). But I wasn’t okay with three wicketkeepers being picked for the World Cup. Either Ambati or Shreyas could’ve come in. What was the logic in having MS Dhoni, Rishabh [Pant] and Dinesh [Karthik] all together?” - Shastri was quoted as saying in an interview by Times of India.

“But I never interfered with the selectors’ work, except when I was asked for feedback or as part of a general discussion,” he added.

India played phenomenally well in the 2019 ODI World Cup where they topped the points table in the group stages with only one defeat and seven wins in nine games as one match ended in a no-result. However, their campaign came to an end after an 18-run defeat against New Zealand in the all-important semi-final.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to become a ten-team tournament from the 2022 season with the inclusion of two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. While the existing eight IPL teams have already revealed the list of retained players ahead of the mega auction which is set to take place before the start of the new season, Lucknow and Ahmedabad have been given the right to pick three players each from the pool of non-retained players.

While both Lucknow and Ahmedabad IPL franchises will be looking to pick quality players from the pool of the non-retained ones ahead of the mega auction, they would also be looking to secure the signing of their respective captains. Both Ahmedabad and Lucknow franchises will be on the lookout for captaincy candidates who can be picked before the mega auction to build the team around them.

A number of top Indian and overseas players have been let go of by their respective franchises who can become the future leaders of the two new IPL teams. The likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer among others will be on the radar of not just the two new teams but several others, who will be looking to get a new captain ahead of the new season.

Here is a look at 5 potential captaincy candidates for two new IPL teams:

KL Rahul

KL Rahul is one of the favourites to take over as the captain of the Lucknow IPL team and is reportedly in negotiations with the franchise after leaving Punjab Kings. Rahul has been reportedly offered a staggering deal of Rs 20 crore (INR 200 million) per year to join the Lucknow team ahead of the new season.

One of the best Indian batters in the IPL over the last few years, Rahul led Punjab for two seasons in 2020 and 2021. While he was consistent with the bat on the personal front, Rahul failed to inspire his side to playoffs in both seasons. Nonetheless, he has been one of the best batters in the league for the last few years and is a great captaincy prospect for both the new teams.

Shreyas Iyer

Another Indian star, who has the experience of captaining an IPL team, Shreyas Iyer will also be on the radar of the two new teams for the captaincy role. Iyer left Delhi Capitals in search of a leadership role after leading the franchise for two and a half seasons. Iyer helped DC make it to their first final in 2020 and was exceptional as a leader.

His stature in the IPL has grown over the years and it won't be a surprise if an IPL team ropes him in as their new skipper. Iyer has plenty of experience behind his back having played 87 matches in IPL. He has 2375 runs to his name at an average of over 31.

David Warner

One of the best overseas batters in the league over the years, David Warner was released by his former team Sunrisers Hyderabad after a fallout during IPL 2021. Warner was sacked from captaincy midway through the IPL 2021 before being dropped from the playing XI by SRH. He remains the only captain to have led SRH to an IPL title in 2016 and will be a strong captaincy contender for both the new teams as well as some other franchises.

While he has a plethora of experience as a captain, Warner has been a consistent performer as a batter in the IPL. He has the highest runs among the overseas batters in the history of the league and fifth overall with 5449 runs in 150 games at a stunning average of over 41.

Steve Smith

Steve Smith has not had great campaigns in the IPL in the last few years but he remains an experienced leader who is capable of taking over the captaincy role for a top IPL side considering his experience and pedigree. Smith has led Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals in the past.

He had led Rising Pune Supergiant to their maiden final in the 2017 season where they lost against Mumbai Indians just by 1 run. Smith has been part of the IPL since 2012 and the former Australia skipper can be a great leader for any team. He has 2485 runs to his name in 103 IPL matches at an average of over 34.

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes managed to play just one game for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021 as he injured his finger in the opening game of the season before flying back home. One of the best all-rounders in the world at present, Stokes has been released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the mega auction and can trigger a bidding war at the auction table.

He is also an ideal candidate for captaincy with the kind of experience he possesses. Stokes is a crucial player for England across formats and has been amazing as an all-rounder. He has 920 runs and 28 wickets to his name in 43 IPL matches.

From KL Rahul to Shreyas Iyer: 5 potential captaincy candidates for new IPL teams Lucknow and Ahmedabad

All the eight existing IPL franchises revealed their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). While some big names were retained, many popular names got released. Though many are set to enter the auction pool, some big players are expected to be picked by the two new IPL franchises -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- as the two new additions have a license to pick three players each prior to IPL 2022 mega auction.

For the unversed, the big players such as KL Rahul, David Warner, Hardik Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Ben Stokes, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, etc. have been released. Hence, the two new IPL teams have quite a few options to pick from.

Before the mega auction, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra named six players who are most likely to be picked by Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Speaking on his Youtube channel, "My first pick is KL Rahul. I feel he will not be able to reach the auction. Punjab Kings wanted to retain him but he didn’t want to. I think he is going to Lucknow and will become the captain of the new team. Rashid Khan is second in the pecking order. I don’t think his name will reach the auction table. He did not want to stay at SunRisers Hyderabad as he has been already approached by a new franchise with a better salary.

My third pick is Shreyas Iyer. He is likely to become captain of the Ahmedabad franchise. He is an important player and will be drafted to a new team. I won’t be surprised to see him lead Ahmedabad as he has already captained Delhi Capitals. Yuzvendra Chahal is another player who might go to Ahmedabad. Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya might not be a part of the auction, but Ishan Kishan’s stocks are a bit high at the moment," he opined.

“David Warner will not make it to the auction either. He is a proven match-winner. He has a lot of experience, has won a lot of games, and has scored 600 odds runs in so many seasons. You won’t find a more consistent player than him,” Chopra added.

From KL Rahul to Suresh Raina: Iconic Indian players who weren't retained before IPL 2022 mega auction

Over the years, the Delhi Capitals (DC) have become one of the most consistent sides in IPL history. While the IPL 2020 runners-up would've been eager to retain their core players, the Delhi franchise has gone ahead with four retained players. They are Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje.

Hence, some big names have been left out of the DC franchise such as Marcus Stoinis, R Ashwin, Avesh Khan, Shikhar Dhawan and their former captain Shreyas Iyer.

DC co-owner Parth Jindal told the broadcasters after announcing the list, "It was heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbroken having to lose Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan, R Ashwin. It is just unfair that you build up a team, give chance to youngsters, groom them but then you lose them after three years. I think IPL needs to look after it. But it is what it is. We are going to try and bring as many of the DC players back in the auction as we can."

For the unversed, DC have a total of 47.5 crores (475 million) in their purse heading into the IPL 2022 auction. Meanwhile, South Africa's speedster and DC's vital cog Nortje also reacted after being retained. "Really excited to be retained. Can't wait for 2022 to start. So far it has been an unbelievable experience so far and looking forward," said Nortje.

Delhi Capitals retention list: DC retain Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje and Prithvi Shaw

Shreyas Iyer had dislocated his shoulder during the England series at home earlier this year but made a remarkable comeback to make a dream Test debut against New Zealand.

Shreyas Iyer: From hospital bed to dream Test debut

Team India star Shreyas Iyer had a dream Test debut against New Zealand in the ongoing series-opener between the two sides at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. After a magnificent century in India's first innings, Iyer followed it up with a brilliant half-century in the second innings to become the first India batter to score a ton and a fifty on Test debut.

India's top-order suffered a terrible collapse in their second innings on Day 4 of the Test match on Sunday as the visitors were left reeling at 51/5 at one point. Iyer showed remarkable grit and batted well to bail the hosts out of trouble with his terrific knock.

He combined with R Ashwin (32) to post a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before adding 64 runs for the seventh wicket with Wriddhiman Shaha, who also played an amazing knock of 61 runs.

Iyer revealed the advice he had recieved from head coach Rahu Dravid before going in to bat and also said it was not the first time that he found himself in such a pressure situation as he has played such knocks in domestic cricket as well.

"I had been in this situation before as well, not with the Indian team but with my Ranji team. Mindset was to play the session and play as many balls as possible. I wasn't thinking too far ahead, was just focusing on the present," Iyer told the official broadcaster at the end of the 4th day's play in Kanpur.

He revealed Dravi had asked him to stay out their in the middle for as long as possible and stay as long as he can. . "Rahul Sir had told me to bat as many balls as possible and I was determined to do that," said the right-hander, who scored 105 and 65 in the two innings of his debut Test match.

New Zealand lost opener Will Young (2) cheaply in their second innings as R Ashwin struck early for India toward the closure of Day 4. New Zealand now need 280 runs to win with nine wickets to spare and a day in hand.

Shreyas Iyer reveals advice from head coach Rahul Dravid after dream Test debut against New Zealand

Debutant Shreyas Iyer showed his ice-cool temperament under pressure to stand tall with a fine half-century which placed India in a commanding position as they set up a stiff victory target of 284 for New Zealand on the fourth day of the opening Test here on Sunday.

India declared at 234 for 7 for an overall lead of 283 and gave the Black Caps four tricky overs to face under fading light during which they managed four runs and lost opener Will Young to Ravichandran Ashwin.

With that scalp, Ashwin became the joint third-highest wicket-taker in Indian cricket with Harbhajan Singh (417 wickets). The highest ever fourth-innings chase by a visiting team in India is 276 by Viv Richards' West Indies against the Dilip Vengsarkar-led India in 1987 at the Feroz Shah Kotla, which placed statistics on the home team's side.

The honours for India on the day were shared by Iyer (65 off 125 balls), who became the first Indian to score a hundred and fifty on debut and the plucky Wriddhiman Saha (61 not out, 126 balls), who battled stiff neck to make an invaluable contribution which will certainly count a lot in the final context of the match.

Axar Patel (28 not out) then conjured another 67-run eighth-wicket stand with Saha to slowly take the match out of the Black Caps' grasp. If New Zealand are still in the match, credit must go to their tireless seam bowling duo of Tim Southee (22-2-75-3) and Kyle Jamieson (17-6-40-3), who showed an exhibition of top-class bowling on an unresponsive track.

However, it will now depend on how much time it takes for India's spin troika to roll over New Zealand, whose openers showed a lot of gumption on the second afternoon and third morning. Also if skipper Williamson can do something mind-blowing with the willow, there might just be a great contest on the cards.

If the morning belonged to New Zealand's bowlers, who decided to prolong Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's bad patch, the afternoon was Iyer's time under the sun while Saha did his bit, reaching his sixth half-century in the final session of the day.

This is certainly an innings which will give Saha's Test career a new lease of life. This was after stand-in captain Rahane and his temporary deputy Pujara's saga of failures continued leaving India tottering at 51 for 5 in the first 75 minutes of the morning session.

But credit to Iyer, who once again displayed steely temperament on the way to his second 50-plus score in the match, hitting eight fours and a huge six over long off against Will Sommerville. His best shot, however, was an inside out lofted drive off left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel. It was a difficult shot that was perfectly executed.

It was followed by a square cut in the same over as Williamson erred by bowling his spinners for way too long. That was proved when Southee removed Iyer at the stroke of tea when he tried to pull one that was drifting down leg side.
Credit should also be given to Saha as he batted with an open-chested stance compared to his usual side-on which reduces the pronounced neck movement.

He played his customary game of dabs and flicks and also produced an occasional slog pull for six as his innings had four fours and a six. However, on the fourth morning, Southee, a practitioner of conventional swing bowling, took a master-class on how to bowl on an unresponsive Indian track, classically setting up the batters.

But before Southee got into the act, Kyle Jamieson (13-6-26-3) targeted Pujara's (22 off 33 balls) ribcage, getting one to rear up on this dead track and it brushed the India No. 3's gloves into the hands of keeper Tom Blundell.
Rahane (4 off 15 balls) is out of form and the world knows about that.

However, Ajaz Patel (17-3-60-1), who has looked way below Test class, then produced his best delivery of the match. An arm ball that was fired in with the angle caught Rahane plumb in-front while he tried to play a forward defensive prod.

Mayank Agarwal (17) did all the hardwork in the first hour but Southee (15.2-3-48-3) set him up with deliveries that came into him from good length spot as he played with a closed bat-face.

Then he pitched on the same spot and, to Agarwal's horror, it shaped slightly away and he had committed to a closed bat-face. The result was a regulation catch to Tom Latham in the second slip. For Ravindra Jadeja (0), Southee used the width of the crease with an angular delivery that wrapped him on the pads.

India vs New Zealand: Debutant Shreyas Iyer, gritty Wriddhiman Saha set up an intriguing final day

India batter Shreyas Iyer continued his purple patch on his Test debut against New Zealand on Day 4 of the ongoing series-opener between the two sides in Kanpur on Sunday. Iyer scripted history with the bat as he became the first Indian to score a century and a half-century in his debut Test match.

The right-hander came out to bat at no.5 when India were reeling at 45/3 having lost both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession before Mayank Agarwal was sent packing quickly as well. Iyer survived an early scare as a thick edge against Tim Southee saw the ball landing in no man's land.

Iyer went on to make the most of the opportunity and slammed a brilliant half-century under pressure to bail India out of trouble and help them stage a comeback in the game.

Iyer, who had scored a magnificent 105 in India's first innings of the Test match, notched up 65 runs in their second innings on Sunday. He combined with R Ashwin (32) to post a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before stitching a 64-run stand for the sixth wicket with Wriddhiman Saha.

With his maiden half-century in Tests, Iyer scripted a massive feat as he became the first Indian with a ton and a fifty on Test debut. He became the tenth batter overall in the world to achieve the stellar feat. He also joined the legendary Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list by becoming the third Indian with two fifty-plus scores on Test debut.

Gavaskar had notched up 65 and 67 on his Test debut against West Indies in 1971 while Dilawar Hussain was the first Indian to achieve the feat when he scored 59 and 57 respectively in the two innings of his debut Test against England in 1933-34.

Shreyas Iyer scripts history, becomes 1st Indian to slam ton & half-century on Test debut

Shreyas Iyer is all set to part ways with Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after spending seven seasons with the franchise. Iyer reportedly expressed his desire not to be retained by DC as he wants a leadership role which he was not going to get at the Delhi-based outfit.

Iyer had been appointed as captain of Delhi Capitals midway through the 2018 season and led the team to their first-ever final in IPL 2020. He missed the first of IPL 2021 this year due to injury and was replaced as Rishabh Pant as captain, who continued leading the side even after Iyer's return in the second leg.

Iyer is reportedly in talks with the two new IPL franchises and his association with Delhi Capitals is all set to end. Former India pacer Irfan Pathan recently gave his take on Iyer's desire to leave DC and said there is something going on at the franchise which is not out in public yet.

"I think so (Shreyas Iyer might be looking for another challenge). He was leading the side really well, playing really well but suddenly when he came back after the injury he was not the captain," Pathan said on Star Sports.

"So that means there is something going on which is not out there in the public. Which means Rishabh Pant will continue as the captain and it's a great opportunity for Shreyas Iyer. Just go out and maybe lead another franchise," he added.

Pathan, who played for a number of IPL teams during his playing career, was also part of the Delhi Capitals side. As per ESPN Cricinfo, Delhi Capitals have decided to retain skipper Pant, Prithvi Shaw, all-rounder Axar Patel and pacer Anrich Nortje ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction.

The auction will be conducted ahead of the IPL 2022 season with the addition of two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Each of the existing eight teams have been allowed a maximum of only four retentions this time around with no right-to-match option.

As all eight teams continue to finalise their retentions ahead of the mega auction, Delhi Capitals (DC) are all set to part ways with Shreyas Iyer. Iyer had earlier expressed his desire to be released by the franchise as he is keen to get a leadership role elsewhere after being replaced as captain of the Delhi Capitals by Rishabh Pant. Thus DC, who wanted to retain him, are likely to release him now.

As per a report in The Telegraph, Iyer and his Delhi Capitals teammate Shikhar Dhawan, who is also set to be released are being pursued by the two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow. The report further states that even Mumbai Indians are keen on roping in Iyer ahead of the new season. The five-time champions are planning to pick him up at the mega auction.

While the existing eight teams have been allowed four retentions each, the two new teams will be allowed to pick a maximum of three players from the pool of players who have not been retained by the eight franchises. The two new teams can pick a maximum of only two Indian players out of the three picks.

If Iyer is roped in by one of the two new teams, Mumbai Indians will not be able to get him at the auction. However, if he remains available in the auction pool, there is set to be a bidding war for the star batter, who recently struck an impressive century on his Test debut in the ongoing Kanpur Test against New Zealand.

Iyer has so far played 87 matches in his IPL career and has 2375 runs to his name at an average of 31.66 and a strike rate of over 123.

Shreyas Iyer to Mumbai Indians? Rohit Sharma-led side keen on roping in Indian star at IPL mega auction

Shreyas Iyer made heads turn on his Test debut during Day One of the Kanpur Test between India and New Zealand, on Thursday (November 25). Taking India to 258-4 at stumps, Iyer was unbeaten on 75 and looked comfortable as his innings progressed.

As soon as the action began on Day Two, Iyer was on fire and dealt in boundaries to get closer to his maiden three-figure mark in whites. India and New Zealand locked horns with each other in the two-match Test series opener on Thursday morning (November 25) at the Green Park Stadium, Kanpur. Electing to bat first, the Ajinkya Rahane-led hosts went to the lunch break at 82/1, riding on opener Shubman Gill's 52, and ended the day's play at a comfortable position, i.e. being 258-4 courtesy debutant Shreyas Iyer (75 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja's 50*.

With many regulars such as captain Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul (out due to injury) being out of action, the onus was on the youngsters -- such as Gill, Iyer, Mohammed Siraj -- to grab their opportunities. Day One of the opening Test was all about Iyer and Gill's commitment to bat for a long period and make a mark. While Siraj wasn't in the playing XI, Gill failed to stay for long but slammed an impressive fifty whereas Iyer returned to the pavillion being unbeaten on 75.

The former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has lavished praise on Indian youngster Gill and feels he will be a vital cog for India while touring abroad. During the lunch break, he told on Star Sports, "I really hope and feel that this guy will go on to have a really good career, especially in Test cricket because I think he can be very vital especially if we keep touring abroad. He has got outstanding backfoot game with his initial movement."

"He is a young guy and he is very talented when it comes to batting. He is trying to figure how to actually correct whatever little technical flaw he has, especially against the fuller delivery. He is coming down the pitch against the fast bowlers and I'm really impressed with the way he is playing against the spinners. He is playing the ball late," added Pathan.

Shreyas Iyer became India's 303rd Test cricketer on Thursday morning (November 25) as he received the elusive cap from legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar ahead of the commencement of the first Test between India and New Zealand.

Iyer was a big name in domestic circuit before he made his India debut in the limited-overs format in 2017. While Iyer has been in the scheme of things for Team India in the shorter formats following the 2019 ODI World Cup, the right-hander had to wait for a long period to get a look-in the Test line-up. With many regulars such as captain Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. being rested for the New Zealand Test series opener, Iyer got a chance to make his debut as soon as KL Rahul got ruled out due to injury on Tuesday (November 23).

Winning the toss, Ajinkya Rahane-led India decided to bat first in Green Park, Kanpur. Riding on Shubman Gill's 52, India started off nicely but lost four wickets heading into the tea break. With India set to see the return of their regular batters in the second and final Test, Iyer will hope to make heads turn and retain his spot for the series decider, to be held in Mumbai from December 3.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition is still far away. However, the excitement of ardent cricket fans knows no boundaries as the upcoming IPL season will see two new teams -- in the form of Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Prior to the next edition, a mega auction is scheduled to take place early next year.

In the coming weeks, all the eight old franchises are set to reveal their list of retained players. According to the retention rules, each franchise is allowed to retain four players from their IPL 2021 squads -- either it can three Indian players and an overseas player or a maximum of two foreign players. On the other hand, the two new franchises will be allowed to make their picks of three players from the pool of non-retained players ahead of the mega auction.

Talking about Ashwin's performances for the DC camp, he attained 13 scalps in 15 games in the 2020 edition whereas returned with only 7 wickets in 13 games in the last season. He remained economical in the last two seasons but didn't do anything extra ordinary in this year's edition. Due to injury, he lost the captaincy spot to Rishabh Pant in the first leg of IPL 2021. On his return for the final leg, he played under Pant for the remainder of the season.

In the absence of Pant, senior keeper Wriddhiman Saha has been selected in the squad along with young KS Bharat, who has been continuously impressing in the domestic circuit. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been rested from the T20I series against the Kiwis, will return to feature in the Tests.

Senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has also been rested from the T20Is will continue his break and will not take part in the Test series. In his absence, India have handed a maiden Test call-up to Prasidh Krishna, who will be eager to make his Test debut after impressing in the domestic circuit.

No Rohit, Pant as India announce squad for New Zealand Test series; Shreyas Iyer makes the cut

The 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be a 10-team affair and the two new inducted teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, are likely to target T20 stars -- David Warner, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Surya Kumar Yadav, among others to make a solid team and loyal fan base.

The Lucknow IPL team was bought by RPSG Group for Rs. 7,090 crore, while CVC Capital Partners paid Rs 5,625 cr for the Ahmedabad team.

Though it's not official yet, the eight existing IPL teams are likely to retain a maximum of four players and the two new franchises will be able to acquire three players from the rest of the player pool via drafts before the 2022 auction. Also, unlike the previous big auction ahead of the 2018 season, there could be no right-to-match cards (RTM) at the auction.

As per ESPNCricinfo, these were among the rules discussed informally this week between the IPL organisers and the franchises.

As far as the three players going to the two new franchises, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, is concerned, the IPL is mulling over a combination of two Indian players and one overseas. However, it is still not clear whether these players will need to be picked strictly from the group of players not retained by the existing franchises, or can be from the larger auction pool -- which will have new additions -- ahead of the 2022 auction.

If the two new franchises are allowed to pick only from the group of players not retained by the other eight, then a player-draft system is likely to be put in place.

Notably, which cricketers plays for whom could make or break the franchises` fan base as well as the team combination. And there is a strong possibility of some big names such as David Warner, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Surya Kumar Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar being up for grabs via drafts this time.

Lucknow:

David Warner: RPSG Group, who now owns Lucknow, had bought the Pune franchise for two years in 2016. In those two years, they had appointed experienced captains in MS Dhoni and Steve Smith for one year each.

An attacking opener as well as an experienced captain like Warner could be a perfect choice for the owners to lead Lucknow. And, considering the short boundaries and flat pitch of the Ekana Stadium, the Australian could be a sure-shot match-winner for the franchise.

Surya Kumar Yadav: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard will be the three automatic picks for retention for Mumbai Indians. There could be a discussion between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for the fourth slot. With Kishan being the wicketkeeper-batsman and age also on his side, Surya Kumar could be left out of the Mumbai team.

If Surya becomes a free agent, Lucknow owners can convince him to be a part of the franchise. Though he plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket, the batsman`s father belongs to Varanasi, UP. Lucknow can also make him the captain, considering his cool and composed nature as well as his ability to bat at different positions.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Suresh Raina: Though Raina and Bhuvi are not in their prime in terms of performance, they are still bankable players, especially in Indian conditions and the IPL. Raina has been an IPL legend and all his success has come at the Chennai Super Kings. But, the MS Dhoni-led team is unlikely to retain him this time. On the other hand, SRH is also likely to part ways with Bhuvneshwar considering a dip in his bowling form.

In that case, both Raina and Bhuvi, who belong to UP, can also be seen playing from the home state franchise. Apart from their on-field performance, both can be an asset for the franchise in terms of their fan base, and marketing as locals will have a deep connection with state boys.

Ahmedabad:

Hardik Pandya: Given his lacklustre performance and fitness concern, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to be sent back into the IPL auction pool by Mumbai Indians. In that case, Ahmedabad owners can latch onto the opportunity and bring Pandya in their team.

Hardik, a Gujarat boy, will bring all the flamboyance, his all-rounder ability and a lot of eye-balls for the franchise as well.

Shreyas Iyer: The Gujarat-based franchise will need a captain to lead and they may approach and target Shreyas Iyer for that role. Iyer is unlikely to be a part of the Delhi Capitals set-up in IPL 2022 and a young talented India batter and captain will be a perfect billing for Ahmedabad. Notably, Iyer led Delhi to the play-offs twice, including its maiden final appearance during the 2020 season.

KL Rahul: Rahul was sensational for Punjab Kings in IPL 2021, finishing as its highest run-scorer. Despite his dominating performance with the bat, he has failed to lead the side to playoffs since taking the captaincy role. As of now, there is no clarity if he would be retained by the side. The Virat Kohli-led side is sweating it out for the upcoming clash against the New Zealand team in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday (October 31). India lost their opening match of the Super 12 stage against Pakistan by 10 wickets, which makes the next contest against Kane Williamson's side extremely crucial. A video posted by the official handle of ICC showcasing the "brilliance" and "glory" of the Indian skipper Kohli, gave a peek into India's training session ahead of the NZ match. More than the video, the adorable reactions of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer have grabbed attention. They are watching Kohli practising in the nets, the way a child looks at his favourite toy. Gavaskar has suggested that Ishan Kishan can be considered as a replacement for India's star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who is not bowling due to injury. The former player then suggested that Shardul Thakur should be added in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. "If Hardik Pandya is not bowling – due to that shoulder injury he sustained in the match against Pakistan – Ishan Kishan has been in brilliant form so I will surely consider him ahead of Pandya," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak. "And perhaps, you can think of Shardul Thakur in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. But otherwise, if you make too many changes, then you will show the opposition that you have panicked," he added. Shreyas Iyer is likely to leave Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. The star India batter was replaced as captain by wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant for the 2021 season of the league and is keen on looking for a leadership role elsewhere in the IPL.

As per a report in the Times of India, Iyer wants a leadership role and is unlikely to get it at Delhi Capitals, who were led to the playoffs by Pant this season. Thus, Iyer will be making himself available in the mega auction that is set to take place ahead of IPL 2022.

Iyer had joined Delhi Capitals in 2015 and has been with the franchise for seven seasons now. He was appointed as the captain midway through the 2018 season when Gautam Gambhir decided to step down from captaincy after the team's poor start to the season.

Iyer has since been a vital cog in the Delhi Capitals' batting line-up and has also been one of their most consistent performers with the bat. He led Delhi Capitals to their first final in the 2020 season in the UAE and has also led the team to the playoffs twice under his captaincy.

With the addition of two new teams in the IPL from the 2022 season, quality players like Iyer will be in huge demand if he makes himself available for the mega auction. Not just the two new IPL teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad, but also other teams will be on the lookout for potential captaincy candidates.

Iyer has so far played 87 matches in the IPL and has 2375 runs to his name at an average of 31.66 including 16 half-centuries. He had to miss the first half of IPL 2021 due to a shoulder injury and was replaced by Pant as captain of DC. While many expected him to lead the side again in the second half of the season after returning, Pant remained the captain of the team.

IPL 2021: Dhoni's classy finish, Kohli's epic reaction, Iyer's stunning catch: Highlights of CSKvsDC thriller

Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) became the second team to confirm a playoffs spot in IPL 2021. On Monday (October 4), the Pant-led DC franchise locked horns with MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, and completed a double over the Yellow Army this season to not only add two more vital points up their sleeves but also confirm a top-two finish in the points table.

Opting to bowl first, Delhi reduced CSK to 62-4 after a promising start by their openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis. However, Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel pulled things back for Delhi as Chennai never recovered from thereon. Riding on Ambati Rayudu's unbeaten 55, CSK posted a modest 136-5 in 20 overs. While Pant & Co. complicated the run-chase for themselves, they finished the proceedings in the final over with 3 wickets in hand.

Assuring themselves of a top-two finish with CSK win, DC players enjoyed some time off before the playoffs begin from next week. The official Twitter handle of the IPL 2020's runners-up shared some pictures of the players relaxing before they square off with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their last game from the league stage.
