Team India completed 3-0 T20I series whitewash against Sri Lanka on Sunday here at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.

India captured the final T20I match by six wickets. For hosts, Shreyas Iyer starred with an unbeaten 73* as the Men in Blue chased the target of 146 within 16.5 overs.

Earlier, Indian bowlers restricted Sri Lanka to the score of 146/5 in the 20 overs. For Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka again played a captain inning of 74* and took visitors to a respectable total while Dinesh Chandimal scored 25.

Avesh Khan scalped two wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel, and Ravi Bishnoi grabbed one apiece. India never found themselves in trouble while chasing the underwhelming target of 146.

Shreyas trumped the chase with 73* off 45 balls - his third successive half-century.

Hosts dominated from the word go and chased down the target with six wickets and 19 balls to spare.

Opting to bat first, visitors had the worst possible start as they lost both their openers inside the first two overs of the innings.

Siraj sent Danushka Gunathilaka back to the pavilion in the final ball of the first over while Avesh in the very next over dismissed Pathum Nissanka.

In the fourth over, Avesh struck again as Sanju Samson caught Charith Asalanka with a half-dive. After the powerplay, the visitors score read 18/3. With SL in trouble, hosts dictated the pace of the innings.

In the 9th over, Bishnoi bowled Janith Liyanage to create more trouble for Lankans. In the 13th over Patel dismissed dangerously looking Dinesh Chandimal on the score of 25 to pile more misery on visitors.

India beat Sri Lanka in 3rd T20I to clinch series 3-0, equal record for most T20I wins on the trot

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets to win the second and penultimate T20I, in Dharamshala, on Saturday evening (February 26) and clinch the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Opting to bowl first, Rohit-led India bowlers didn't have an easy ride versus the Islanders. Pathum Nissanka, who fell for a golden duck in the series opener, and Danushka Gunathilaka's opening stand (67 runs) ensured a good start for the visitors. While they did survive some close calls initially, the duo found their rhythm as the innings progressed. Against the run of play, Ravindra Jadeja struck to remove Gunathilaka for 38.

When it seemed Indian bowlers had managed to restrict the Lankans, skipper Dasun Shanaka's 19-ball 47 and Nissanka's calculative and well-compiled 53-ball 75 propelled SL to 183-5. Among Indian bowlers, Jadeja, Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar remained expensive.

In reply, India's chase started with Rohit departing for 1. Ishan Kishan also failed to get going to be dismissed for cheap. The onus, this, shifted on in-form Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson. While Samson took some time before launching some biggies, Iyer played a sensational inning -- with a flurry of boundaries at regular intervals along with smart rotation of strike.

While India lost Samson, courtesy a blinder by B Fernando, Jadeja-Iyer completed the formalities as Lankans continued to be sloppy on the field and gave plenty of boundary-balls. Jadeja dominated the unbroken fourth-wicket stand with Iyer (74 not out) to return with an 18-ball 45* (at a whopping strike-rate of 250).

With this win, India's best-ever winning streak in the format has now stretched to 11. Among Test-playing nations, Afghanistan top the list holding the first two spots. Now, India have joined the Afghans in the second position with 11 successive wins. If India inflict a clean sweep versus the Sri Lankans, they will come at par with Afghanistan at the top spot (12).

Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja keep India's winning streak alive, Men in Blue win T20I series vs Sri Lanka

India thrashed Sri Lanka by 62 runs in the first of the three-match T20I series on Thursday evening (February 24) to go 1-0 up in the series. With this win, India also attained their biggest winning streak in the shortest format (10).

Post India's back-to-back defeats in the opening two games of the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE, the Men in Blue have been on a roll with their unbeaten streak now stretching to ten games. Talking about the series opener, played in Lucknow, Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision backfired as Ishan Kishan-Rohit's century-stand took India off to a flier. While Rohit fell for 32-ball 44, he became the leading run-getter in the shortest format.

After Rohit's fall, Ishan's 56-ball 89 (at a strike-rate of 158.93) and Shreyas Iyer's 28-ball 57 not out (filled with 5 fours, 2 sixes) propelled the home side to a daunting 199-2. This effort came in the absence of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.

In reply, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka on the very first ball of the steep run-chase. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also removed Kamil Mishara for cheap whereas Dinesh Chandimal, Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne fell after getting a start each. Rohit once again rotated his bowlers with ease as Bhuvi, Venkestesh Iyer chipped in with two wickets each whereas Yuzi Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja maintained the pressure with one wicket apiece. Chahal also became the leading wicket-taker for the Men in Blue after dismissing Shanaka.

Eventually, SL were restricted for 137 for 6 in their full quota of overs (courtesy of Charith Asalanka's gritty 53*) as they were never in the run-chase and struggled to stitch partnerships.

Rohit Sharma & Co. thrash Sri Lanka in 1st T20I as India attain longest unbeaten streak in shortest format

India survived a last-over scare from Rovman Powell to secure a thrilling 8-run win in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series to take an unassailable lead of 2-0. India will be aiming for a 3-0 clean sweep when they lock horns with Kieron Pollard & Co. in the third and final T20I of the series at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (February 20).

If India manage to continue their stellar winning run in the third T20I on Sunday, it will be the second successive T20I series clean sweep for the hosts, who had defeated New Zealand 3-0 at home post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. India have been enjoying a brilliant run under captain Rohit Sharma and will be hopeful of making it three wins in a row on Sunday.

However, the hosts are set to be without Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the final encounter. Both Kohli and Pant were the heroes of India's victory in the second game as they slammed a half-century apiece to help the Men in Blue post a challenging total of 186 runs on the board. Kohli and Pant left the team's bio-bubble and have been given a ten-day break by the BCCI.

The duo will also miss the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka which is set to get underway from February 24. In the absence of the duo, India are likely to bring Shreyas Iyer back in the playing XI. Iyer, who is yet to feature in the ongoing T20I series, can take Kohli's no.3 spot in the batting line-up. Talented opener Ruturaj Gaikwad also might finally get a chance to break into the XI.

Gaikwad is part of the squad but is yet to get a chance in the series and he might open with captain Rohit Sharma in the 3rd T20I on Sunday. Ishan Kishan, who has had average outings as an opener in the first two games, might be asked to take Pant's spot in the middle-order and keep wickets in his absence.

All-rounder Deepak Hooda might also make his T20I debut in case India want to add another all-rounder in the XI to have extra batting and bowling depth in the final game of the series. Hooda, who impressed in the ODI series against the West Indies, is yet to play his first T20I for India.

India's predicted playing XI for 3rd T20I against West Indies:

Rohit Sharma (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer to feature? India's predicted playing XI for 3rd T20I against West Indies

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as their new captain ahead of the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). KKR had headed into the recently-concluded IPL 2022 mega auction looking for a potential captaincy candidate after letting go of Eoin Morgan, who led the side last year.

Kolkata Knight Riders roped in star Indian batter Iyer for a whopping Rs 12.25 crore (INR 122.5 million), making him their most expensive signing at the IPL 2022 mega auction. Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals to their first-ever final in IPL 2020, will be leading KKR in IPL 2022.

Iyer was appointed as the captain of the Delhi Capitals midway through the IPL 2018 season. He led the team to their first playoffs after seven years in 2019 before guiding them to the final in IPL 2020. Iyer was replaced by Rishabh Pant as the captain of the side after missing the first phase of IPL 2021 due to an injury.

While many expected he would take over from Pant and continue in his role as DC's skipper after returning from injury, the franchise decided to replace him with Pant permanently. Iyer hence parted ways with DC in search of a leadership role and was picked up by KKR at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

One of the regulars for India in white-ball cricket, Iyer has proven his leadership credentials in IPL already and will be keen on helping KKR end their title drought since 2014. The two-time champions had made it to the final last year but lost to MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings to miss out on their third title.

The multi-millionaires! Indian and overseas players sold for Rs 100 million or more at IPL 2022 auction

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had a good run in the two-day IPL 2022 mega auction, held in Bengaluru. The mega auction was an entertaining affair as several marquee players were sold at a whopping price whereas some unknown and relatively inexperienced campaigners also made a mark by attracting quite a lot of bids.

The mega auction, held after four years, also stood out for many players being shifted to a new franchise as the IPL 2022 edition promises to be an enthralling and engaging ten-team tournament, set to be held in March-May this year. Talking about the two-time winners and IPL 2021 runners-up KKR, they entered the auction pool with INR 480 million (INR 48 crore). Prior to the mega auction, the Shahrukh Khan-co-owned franchise had retained four players: Varun Chakravarthy (INR 80 million), Sunil Narine (INR 60 million), Venkatesh Iyer (INR 80 million) and Andre Russell (INR 120 million).

In the mega auction, KKR have revamped decently with plenty of new additions whereas they have also managed to bring back some vital cogs. However, some questions still remain.

KKR's 22-member squad comprises 15 Indian players along with 7 foreign recruits. They have invested heavily on various all-rounders, such as Pat Cummins (re-signed for INR 72.5 million), Md Nabi, Nitish Rana, etc. The KKR unit managed to include wily swing bowler Tim Southee in their line-up as well and got some big names to fill their batting department, such as Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane (INR 10 million), Sheldon Jackson, Alex Hales, Sam Billings (INR 20 million).

KKR broke the bank for Iyer, the former Delhi Capitals' (DC) skipper, for INR 122.5 million (INR 12.25 crore). The Kolkata-based franchise, however, will feel too dependent on Cummins and Southee in the pace department. While they did manage to add Umesh Yadav (INR 20 million) to the squad, the Indian pacer hasn't been a regular in IPL and in Team India's white-ball squads. On the other hand, a lot of onus will be on Varun and Narine to handle the spin workload.

Overall, Iyer seems like a frontrunner to succeed Eoin Morgan -- not re-signed by the team management -- to lead KKR in IPL 2022.

Kolkata Knight Riders complete squad for IPL 2022: Shreyas Iyer joins Galaxy of Knights, Cummins returns

Shreyas Iyer, the former Delhi Capitals (DC) captain, has gone for a whopping sum at the ongoing IPL 2022 mega auction, being held in Bengaluru on Saturday (February 12). Iyer, who led the DC franchise to their maiden and only final in 2020 season, has been sold to the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 122.5 million (Rs 12.25 crore).

Iyer was expected to be in huge demand in the mega auction. As expected, the 27-year-old youngster triggered a bidding war between DC and the KKR franchise before the latter had the last laugh in the auction proceedings. The Delhi camp bid aggressively for him before the KKR unit jumped in at INR 70 million (Rs 7 crore) and bought Iyer for a humongous sum.

After not being retained by the DC franchise, the right-hander has been roped in by the KKR dugout as he will now look to lead the Kolkata-based team to their third title in the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, to be held in India.

New KKR captain? Shreyas Iyer roped in by two-time champions for whopping INR 122.5 million

Ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has picked a star Indian batter who he feels will become one of the top earners at the mega event. A total of 600 players will be going under the hammer in the two-day mega auction ahead of the new season of the IPL.

Gavaskar believes star India batter Shreyas Iyer will be one the most expensive pick at the IPL 2022 mega auction. There are a number of IPL franchises that will be looking for a potential captaincy candidate and Iyer is expected to be in demand given his leadership credentials.

Iyer had led Delhi Capitals for two seasons and led them to their first final in the 2020 season. He was replaced by Rishabh Pant as the captain of the side after a shoulder injury last year and decided to part ways with the franchises. Apart from his leadership qualities, Iyer has also been in top form with the bat and notched up a brilliant 80-run knock in the third and final ODI between India and West Indies on Friday (February 2).

Gavaskar believes Iyer's splendid knock in the third ODI will help the former Delhi Capitals captain 'shake the bank' at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

"He definitely is going to be one of the most sought-after players. If he’d got a hundred, with him, it’s just a question of breaking the bank. With an 80, he will shake the bank," said the batting legend.

Gavaskar's comments came after Iyer showed remarkable grit and resilience in his 80-run knock against West Indies to bail India out of trouble in the third ODI. He walked in to bat at no.4 when India were 42/3 inside ten overs. Iyer combined with Rishabh Pant (56) to add 110 runs for the fourth wicket to help India post 265 runs on the board.

India went on to clinch the game comfortably by 96 runs after bundling out West Indies for 169 runs. Apart from Iyer, the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, R Ashwin, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur will be Indian players who will be much sought after at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant help India sweep ODI series against West Indies

Virat Kohli resigned as the Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) captain following the end of the three-time runners-up's campaign in the IPL 2021 edition. Kohli had announced the news at the start of the second and final leg of IPL 14, in the UAE, on September 19.

Back then, the RCB Twitter handle quoted Kohli as saying, "This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me."

He added, "It has been a great and an inspiring journey, captaining a talented bunch of players in the RCB squad. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the RCB management, coaches, support staff, players, and the entire RCB family, who have been instrumental in the growth of the franchise over the years."

Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, set to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh feels Kohli still remains the best man to lead RCB. "Despite having many big names, RCB is a team who is yet to lift the title. AB de Villiers won't play this season and Kohli has stepped down from captaincy... so they need to find a captain now. Among Indians, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are the two names who can efficiently lead the team," Harbhajan said while speaking on his YouTube channel.

"Shreyas has already shown his captaincy prowess while leading the Delhi franchise. But I think Kohli will have to don the captaincy hat again. RCB won't get a better leader than him," opined Harbhajan.

"RCB is making a new team and they will search for a good leader. But does Kohli want to take up the role? It will be a big challenge but I won't be surprised if he agrees to be the captain for the next 1-2 years," he added.

Recently, former Indian fast-bowling all-rounder Ajit Agarkar had also advised Kohli to reconsider taking up RCB captaincy.

"If Virat Kohli can take over the captaincy and if he is happy to do it and if he has the energy to do it, I think that will be the easiest solution for them," Agarkar told Star Sports show Game Plan ahead of the auction.

"At the end of the day, we have seen RCB over the years they haven't invested enough money in making a proper team of 12, 13 or 14 players with enough depth. It's always been dependent on the top three, not enough middle order players and if you don't have the money, you can't do that again. So, if you break the bank for one player, doesn't matter how good he is - will win you games but will never win you competitions," he further added.

Under Kohli, RCB won 64 games and lost 69. He led the franchise in 140 games, taking them to the IPL 2016 final where they lost to the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

For now, RCB have retained Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Md Siraj ahead of the mega auction. They will have to include some famed and marquee players and then choose their next captain, unless Kohli has a change of mind (which seems highly unlikely at this point of time). He has already given up Team India captaincy altogether (resigning from two formats and being sacked as the ODI captain).

Back then, the RCB Twitter handle quoted Kohli as saying, "This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me." He added, "It has been a great and an inspiring journey, captaining a talented bunch of players in the RCB squad. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the RCB management, coaches, support staff, players, and the entire RCB family, who have been instrumental in the growth of the franchise over the years." ALSO READ | That will be the easiest solution: Ajit Agarkar urges Virat Kohli to reconsider captaining RCB in IPL 2022 Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, set to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh feels Kohli still remains the best man to lead RCB. ALSO READ | Throwback: When Hardik Pandya didn't draw a single bid and went UNSOLD at IPL 2014 auction Under Kohli, RCB won 64 games and lost 69.

India batters Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer have tested negative for COVID-19 and hence the duo has been cleared to resume training. Sources in the know of developments confirmed to ANI that Dhawan and Iyer have been cleared to train.

"Yes, Shikhar and Shreyas have tested negative for COVID-19 and they have been cleared to train. Ruturaj Gaikwad is still in isolation," the source pointed. Team India will have a training session on Tuesday evening and both Dhawan and Iyer are set to be a part of that session.

Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer test COVID-19 negative, cleared to train ahead of 2nd ODI vs West Indies

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat West Indies by six wickets in the three-match ODI series opener on Sunday (February 6) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. With this, India started their home season on a high and also completed their 1000th outing in the 50-over format on an emphatic note.

With a 1-0 lead, Rohit & Co. will not like to lose momentum and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three ODIs as both sides face each other in the second and penultimate match on Wednesday (February 09), at the same venue.

The likes of KL Rahul (limited-overs vice-captain), Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan have been added to the squad. Rahul missed the series opener -- reportedly due to personal reasons -- whereas Iyer and opener Dhawan have recovered from Covid-19 and cleared to train on Tuesday (February 08). It is highly unlikely that the Rahul Dravid-led team management will include both Iyer and Dhawan at one go, however, Rahul is expected to return to the playing XI.

It will be interesting to see who misses out if Rahul is included in the XI. For the Windies, they need to address their batting issues at the earliest whereas a lot depends on Jason Holder and Kemar Roach with the ball. While Alzarri Joseph had a decent outing in the series opener, the inexperienced spin duo of Fabien Allen and Akeal Hosein will be tested by the Indian batters.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are having a tough ride in international cricket for quite sometime. Before the South Africa Tests, in the rainbow nation early this year, Rahane-Pujara were already under the scanner for their dismal runs in the longest format of the game.

For Rahane, the senior pro had not scored a hundred since his flawless 112-run knock in the India-Australia MCG Test in late 2020. On the other hand, Pujara's century drought continues since early 2019. While Pujara has remained a vital cog with some half-centuries at regular intervals, much more is expected of him. Meanwhile, Rahane also lost his vice-captaincy position in whites owing to his dismal run with the bat.

The two senior batters had a chance to revamp in the India-SA Tests, however, both didn't have a great run in the three-match series. Both returned with a half-century each in six outings. For the unversed, Rahane returned with 136 runs at 22.66 in the SA Tests whereas the No. 3 batter Pujara ended with 124 runs at 20.66. Thus, calls for their omissions have intensified.

In this regard, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has shared some advice for the under-fire pair. He told Sportstar, "Yeah, they are very good players. Hopefully, they will go back to Ranji Trophy and score a lot of runs, which I am sure they will. I don’t see any problem [for them to go back to domestic cricket after playing so much international cricket]. Ranji Trophy is a huge tournament, and we have all played the tournament."

"So, they, too, will go back there and perform. They have played the tournament in the past when they were only playing Test cricket and were not part of the ODI or limited-overs team. So, that won’t be a problem," he added.

It will be interesting to see if Rahane and Pujara hold onto their respective spots -- despite intense competition with the presence of Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, etc. -- or not.

The BCCI selectors will also have to name Virat Kohli's successor in Tests after he resigned as the red-ball captain following the SA Tests.

The IPL 2022 mega auction is just a few days away. The excitement among the ardent IPL fans is on another level as the mega auction returns after four long years. With the addition of two new more teams, in the form of Ahmedabad and Lucknow, all eyes are on how the new franchises will form their sides from scratch whereas it will be interesting to see how the eight old teams revamp and re-build after releasing some key players.

Among the non-retained players, the likes of David Warner, Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Devdutt Padikkal, etc. are set to go under the radar. Ahead of the mega auction, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a bold revelation, saying that Iyer is set to be the most expensive player and Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have kept a whopping amount aside for him.

Now, they will reserve money for Ishan and money will be splashed out for Iyer."

For the foreign players, Chopra added, “The three most expensive overseas players will be Rabada, and then one of Quinton de Kock or David Warner will be the most expensive overseas player as well. There's a good possibility."

The IPL 2022 edition is still two months away. The BCCI is planning to host the 15th edition in India, from late March. Before the upcoming season begins, all eyes are on the mega auction. It is set to be held in Bengaluru in mid-February. Before the auction proceedings, seven out of the ten teams don't have to worry about choosing a captain as they have either retained their respective skippers or named new captains.

However, the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) need to choose a captain as well in the forthcoming mega auction. While Virat Kohli resigned as the RCB captain post IPL 2021, KL Rahul left PBKS and will captain the Lucknow Super Giants in the forthcoming edition. Despite taking KKR to the IPL 14 finale, Eoin Morgan wasn't retained by the two-time winners and, hence, the Kolkata-based franchise will have to look for a captain in the auction proceedings.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, former KKR captain Dinesh Karthik -- who has also registered himself in the mega auction -- named three players who can take up captaincy roles. He named Shreyas Iyer as one of the options and further said, "If you go by recent history, obviously David Warner. He has captained a franchise, he's available. If you go by the current international standards, Pat Cummins. He is put his name in so he obviously has an opportunity to be a captain if he goes to a franchise that believes he could be a captain."

“If you throw an outside name, obviously Ishan Kishan has led the U-19s. He has led Jharkhand. So, they seem as options,” he added.

It will be interesting to see who all are named the captains for the three franchises who are in need of a skipper at the moment. The likes of Shreyas, Ishan, Warner, Cummins will surely be expensive buys and can also serve as captains. Some other options are Morgan, Jason Holder, Ben Stokes, etc.

IPL 2022: Dinesh Karthik names Indian youngster among 3 star players who could captain a franchise

Virat Kohli will not be leading Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) having stepped down from captaincy after the conclusion of IPL 2021 in the UAE last year. Kohli had led RCB to the playoffs of IPL 2021 in what was his final season as the captain of the franchise.

RCB will be looking for a captaincy candidate when they head into the upcoming IPL mega auction ahead of the 2022 season. While there are several top players who are set to go under the hammer, star India batter Shreyas Iyer is reportedly on the radar of several franchises as a potential captaincy candidate.

Iyer was part of the Delhi Capitals squad last year and parted ways with the franchise after being replaced by Rishabh Pant as captain. Iyer had led Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final in the 2020 season and has already proven his leadership qualities in the league.

While the two new teams - Lucknow Super Giants and the Ahmedabad IPL franchise have already roped in KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya as their captains respectively, there are a number of teams who will be on the lookout for potential captaincy candidates.

Iyer is reportedly on RCB's radar for the captaincy role after Kohli's decision to quit. However, former India opener Aakash Chopra believes RCB should not keep the Indian star batter as their number one option. While sharing his views on the RCB captaincy debate, Chopra suggested the franchise can rope in West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder as the captain of the team.

Chopra also suggested the idea of Glenn Maxwell, who has been retained by the franchise, as a potential captaincy candidate for IPL 2022. While Maxwell is already part of the RCB squad, Holder played for Sunrisers Hyderabad last year and will be entering the IPL mega auction this time around.

"Shreyas Iyer is an option. Bangalore can think about him but personally, he is not my No. 1 pick for Bangalore because the ground is not like that. He is a top-order batter and it will not work out if you send him below No. 4. You might not have a place till No. 4 as you have Kohli and Maxwell, and you are trying to bat Maxwell up the order," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"They can either think about Maxwell or let me just throw a name here - Jason Holder. He is an unassuming character, does not impose himself, he is absolutely perfect for a franchise like RCB. He will play all the matches, he knows how to run a team and he will never take the center stage," Chopra added.

RCB have managed to qualify for the playoffs in the last two seasons but are yet to win their maiden IPL trophy. Kohli was leading the side from 2013 but failed to inspire them to glory even once in the league. RCB will be hoping to spark a turnaround and build a strong team to win the tournament this year.

Holder has never led a team in the Indian Premier League but has been great as captainc with the West Indies national team. The all-rounder has played 26 IPL matches so far, amassing 189 runs and picking up 35 wickets.

Former Indian opener-turned-social media sensation Wasim Jaffer has lauded Virat Kohli after the latter dropped a bomb recently by stepping down as the Test captain. Kohli took to his official Twitter handle to share the news with one and all, a day after India's 2-1 series loss to Dean Elgar-led South Africa.

Kohli tweeted saying, "Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now. It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer opened up on Kohli's decision, hailed him for being an exceptional leader in whites and said, "The way he has led India in all three formats has been commendable. Even though we keep saying that he hasn't won a ICC trophy, other than that he has a great record as a leader, whether it's at home where he hasn't lost any series as a captain, he lost only two Test matches. Away from home he has got tremendous success.

“As a white-ball captain, he won T20 trophies in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. Beating Australia in Australia was the icing on the cake for him as a leader. I think no sub-continent team has gone to Australia and beaten Australia. It was probably the highest point as a captain,” Jaffer added.

Jaffer further went onto mention the one quality brought forward by Kohli during his tenure as the Test captain, from 2014-2021. "The kind of culture he has brought to the Indian team and the fast-bowling firepower that India has become under him is tremendous, something which India never had.

"Now we've got such a high quality bowling attack and I think India has definitely got one of the best bowling attacks going around whether it's seaming conditions or spinning conditions," the 43-year old further said.

Kohli took over from MS Dhoni as the Test captain when the national side occupied the seventh position in ICC Test Rankings. At the time of his resignation, India are the No. 1 side and ended at the top spot for five consecutive years during annual updates of ICC rankings. Under Kohli, India won 40 Tests in 68 matches, winning three games in England, two series on the trot in Australia (one under Ajinkya Rahane), two Tests in South Africa.

Jaffer also suggested that Hitman Rohit should now take over from Kohli whereas named three candidates who can be groomed under him. "Rohit Sharma I feel will be the obvious choice right now for him to lead in all three formats but selectors in a year or two years time look for replacement. Or look for somebody to groom and the obvious name that comes to mind is Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul. And I would also take the name of Shreyas Iyer because I think these three guys have the potential to be Indian captain for the future,” he said.

Jaffer mentions quality Kohli developed 'which India never had', suggests ideal candidates as his successor

Indian cricket team star Shreyas Iyer is one of the top players who is all set to enter the pool in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction ahead of the 2022 edition of the tournament. Iyer is all set to find a new team ahead of the new season after parting ways with his former side Delhi Capitals (DC).

Iyer had decided to leave DC after the franchise appointed Rishabh Pant as their new captain denying the Mumbai batter a chance to lead the side. He led Delhi Capitals in three seasons and inspired them to their first-ever final in IPL 2020 where they lost to Mumbai Indians in the summit clash to miss out on winning their maiden IPL crown.

Nonetheless, Iyer is set to find a new team and will enter the auction pool this time around. He is reportedly admired a lot by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who are in search of a captaincy candidate after superstar Virat Kohli decided to step down as the skipper of the side post the conclusion of IPL 2021 last year.

As per a report in the Times of India, RCB are interested in roping in Iyer at the upcoming mega auction which is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru next month. “Post Virat Kohli quitting the RCB captaincy, RCB are really interested in having Iyer as their next captain. Expect them to bid aggressively for the Mumbaikar in next month’s auction in Bangalore,” a source close to the development, was quoted as saying by Times of India.

RCB are not the only team interested in Iyer and will be bidding for him at the mega auction as the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings are also said to be eyeing the former Delhi Capitals captain. Both KKR and Punjab Kings will also be in the auction for a captaincy candidate after letting go of their respective ex-skippers Eoin Morgan and KL Rahul ahead of IPL 2022.

“The Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings are also expected to eye him in the auction,” the source said.

Shreyas Iyer to replace Virat Kohli as RCB captain? Three IPL teams eye ex-DC skipper at mega auction

From Rahul to Hardik: 6 players who can be picked by new teams and not enter IPL 2022 auction pool

The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction is all set to be a grand affair this year with as many as ten teams battling it out for a number of top players who will be going under the hammer at the showpiece event. While the existing eight teams have already revealed their final retentions, the two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad can make three picks each from the pool of non-retained players.

Barring the players picked by Ahmedabad and Lucknow in the draft, all others will be heading to the mega auction. Several big Indian names, who have not been retained by their respective IPL sides will be up for grabs at the mega auction. Here we take a look at five Indian stars who are likely to fetch a huge amount at the IPL 2022 mega player auction.

KL Rahul

One of the favourites to captain the Lucknow IPL franchise in the 2022 season, former Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul is unlikely to head into the auction pool as he is expected to be picked in the players draft ahead of the event. Rahul is reportedly set to join Lucknow and has been offered a staggering contract.

He has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL over the last few seasons and has been among the runs. Rahul was recently appointed as India's limited-overs vice-captain and is seen as a future leader of the national team as well. He has so far played 94 IPL matches and has an impressive 3273 runs to his name at an average of over 47.

Hardik Pandya

Mumbai Indians had to let go of their star all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction owing to his recent fitness issues and concerns regarding his bowling. Hardik, who has played an instrumental role in Mumbai Indians' success over the years, didn't bowl at all in IPL 2021 as he continues to deal with his back issues which have hampered his progress.

Hardik had been retained for a sum of Rs 11 crore (110 million) by Mumbai Indians in 2018 and is expected to go for big money once again if he heads to the auction pool. However, there is a strong chance that the all-rounder is picked by one of the two new teams - Lucknow or Ahmedabad before the auction for a huge sum.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer's rise in the Indian Premier League has been nothing short of extraordinary. From a young batting talent, Iyer matured into a fine leader for the Delhi Capitals after he was handed over captaincy midway into the IPL 2018 season. He led DC to their first-ever final in IPL 2020 and proved why he is on his path to becoming one of the future greats in the IPL.

Besides his captaincy credentials, Iyer is a reliable batsman, who has been a consistent performer in the league. He was released by Delhi Capitals after reportedly expressing his desire to look for a leadership role elsewhere after being replaced by Rishabh Pant as captain. Iyer has 2375 runs in 87 matches in the IPL at an average of over 31.

Shikhar Dhawan

Senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan might have slipped down the pecking order in the Indian team as far as T20Is are concerned, but he remains a prolific run-getter in the IPL. Dhawan has been churning out runs regularly for every team that he has played for in the league so far and enjoyed a brilliant stint for Delhi Capitals before being released this year.

Dhawan scored 587 runs in 16 matches for DC in IPL 2020 and was the fourth-highest run-getter in the tournament. The experienced opener will be in massive demand at the IPL 2022 mega auction and is expected to trigger a bidding war among teams.

Ishan Kishan

The explosive young wicket-keeper batter made his India debut last year and has been impressive since. Kishan didn't have a season to remember in IPL 2021 but still managed to stay among the runs despite not getting many chances. However, his versatility as a batter who can fire as an opener, as well as in the middle-order makes him a huge asset for any team.

Kishan is also a brilliant young wicket-keeper and can also be groomed into a leadership role in the future. He is certain to draw bids from a number of teams at the IPL mega auction and get a fat pay cheque for his services.

KL Rahul to Hardik Pandya: Indian stars who can bag big contracts at IPL 2022 mega auction

Many were left surprised as India decided to name struggling senior batter Ajinkya Rahane in the playing XI for the first Test against South Africa that got underway at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday (December 26). It was not an easy call from the team management as Rahane has been undergoing a lean patch in the longest format for quite a while now.

India went with a total of five bowlers in the first Test as Shardul Thakur was picked as an all-rounder along with R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. Five bowlers meant, India had to do away with an extra batter in the playing XI as Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari both failed to make the cut for the series-opener.

Former Indian cricketers Aakash Chopra and Ajit Agarkar both were left unhappy with Rahane's selection over Iyer and Vihari as they questioned his spot in the playing XI. Chopra said it could be the last throw of dice from the Indian team management, hoping that Rahane could deliver and spark a turnaround for himself.

"Shreyas Iyer doesn't find a place in the spot and you've gone with Rahane, I think so it's the last throw of dice, hoping that it comes alright. If it doesn't, I think this is going to be a huge Test match for him," Chopra said on Star Sports.

Chopra also questioned India's decision to select five bowlers in the playing XI for the first Test, stating that South Africa's batting line-up isn't too strong at present and has not been setting the world on fire. Chopra said four bowlers would have been enough for India considering there is help for fast bowlers on the greenish track in Centurion.

“We have gone with five bowlers, personally I thought four were enough. I think if there is help in the surface for the faster bowlers, look at the opposition their batting is really not setting the world on fire four should be enough between three fast bowlers and Ashwin," said Chopra.

Agarkar also agreed with Chopra's views on India's playing XI and said Rahane should not have been picked over the likes of Iyer and Vihari. While Iyer recently made a fantastic debut in the two-match Test series against New Zealand at home, Vihari slammed three half-centuries for India A on their tour of South Africa.

"Rahane did miss the last Test India played in Mumbai due to a niggle so you can say he's back in because he is an experienced campaigner, has done well before in these conditions. But I'm with Aakash, I would have either picked Vihari or Shreyas Iyer," said Agarkar.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has named a couple of players who he feels are string contenders to lead the Indian cricket team in the future. Rohit Sharma recently took over from Virat Kohli as ODI and T20I captain of the Indian team after the T20 World Cup debacle where the Men in Blue had failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Shastri was also replaced by Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the team as his contract expired post the T20 World Cup. The former head coach feels KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are two players who are contenders to be an Indian captain in the future. He revealed the names while speaking about Dravid replacing him as the head coach.

"Rahul Dravid knows his job. All I want to say to him is enjoy. KL Rahul is there, Shreyas Iyer has good leading qualities in the future especially in white-ball cricket," Shastri told Indian Express.

Rahul is already part of India's leadership group and has been appointed the team's full-time vice-captain in white-ball cricket with Rohit leading the team. He also was named the stand-in vice-captain of the Test team for the upcoming Test series against South Africa after an injury to Rohit, who was to be Virat Kohli's deputy for the series.

Rahul has also led Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has been a regular across formats for Team India over the last few years. He is likely to lead whichever team he decides to join ahead of the IPL mega auction having left Punjab Kings.

Meanwhile, Iyer has also been fantastic as a captain in the IPL and has shown great leadership qualities with Delhi Capitals. He inspired Delhi to their maiden final in IPL 2020. However, Iyer is yet to take a leadership role in the Indian team.

Nonetheless, Shastri, who has observed him from close quarters during his coaching stint, believes Iyer has the potential to lead India in the future. Currently, Rohit is India's white-ball captain while Kohli continues to lead the side in Tests.
