IPL 2021: Shreyas Iyer appreciates Ravichandran Ashwin's positive intent against Mumbai Indians

Unique colours and funky looks: IPL 2021 stars and their extraordinary hairstyles

Shreyas Iyer had a shoulder injury during the India-England ODIs at home, early this year,. It forced him to miss the first leg of IPL 2021 and also remain out of competitive cricket for six months before he returned to the Delhi Capitals (DC) squad for the second and final leg of this year's IPL, in the UAE.

Since his return, the right-hander has looked in good touch and managed scores of 47* and 43 in DC's first two outings in the final leg. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians' (MI) famed trio -- Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya -- haven't managed to fire on all cylinders for the defending champions. Hence a report suggests that the Indian team management is keen on including Iyer in the main squad amid growing concerns over the T20 WC-bound players' form.

You are talking about Hardik and there is no backup at the moment. Shardul and Deepak are good options but they are yet to prove as regular all-round options in T20s. So, Hardik remains the best all-rounder,” the BCCI source further added.

Shreyas Iyer likely to be included in India's main T20 World Cup squad as concerns arise over WC-bound players' form in IPL - Report

Delhi Capitals bowlers made up for the team's underwhelming display with the bat to hand Rajasthan Royals a 33-run defeat in their Indian Premier League match, here on Saturday. The Capitals bowling unit restricted the Royals to 121 for six after the team put on board 154 for six on the back of Shreyas Iyer's 43 and a late flourish provided by Shimron Hetmyer, who scored 28 runs off 16 balls.

Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson looked in sublime touch, scoring an unbeaten 70, but with wickets tumbling at regular intervals from the other end, the Royals innings failed to get the momentum it needed. South African pacer Anrich Nortje (2/18) led the Delhi bowlers who performed as a cohesive unit.

Avesh Khan (1/29), Kagiso Rabada (1/26), Axar Patel (1/27), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/20) snapped a wicket each. With the win, the Capitals returned to the top of the table while the Royals moved down to the sixth spot. Defending a modest total, pacers Khan and Nortje provided the electric start that the Capitals needed, sending back both openers -- Liam Livingstone (1) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (5) in the first two overs.

Skipper Rishabh Pant made a bowling change by bringing in Ashwin and the senior Indian spinner got rid of the dangerous David Miller (7) to leave the Royals tottering at 17 for 3. With the required run rate increasing, Rajasthan needed 107 runs in the last 10 over.

Samson and young Mahipal Lomror (19) seemed to be reviving the innings but the ever-reliant Rabada nipped the partnership in the bud. Riyan Parag (2) and Rahul Tewatia (9) couldn't provide a valuable contribution either. Samson was going strong, hitting boundaries at will but the Delhi bowlers came back strongly.

Earlier, the Royals pacers -- led by Mustafizur Rahman (2/22), Chetan Sakariya (2/33) and Kartik Tyagi (1/40) -- shared five wickets while spin all-rounder Rahul Tewatia (1/17) dismissed one batsman. Tyagi, the star of the match against Punjab Kings, drew first blood with his very first delivery in the fourth over, cleaning up Orange Cap holder Shikhar Dhawan (8).

The Delhi opener looked to play a good length delivery but the ball rolled back to hit the timber. Prithvi Shaw (10) soon followed his opening partner back to the dugout, slicing the ball off Sakariya to Liam Livingstone at mid-off. At the end of the powerplay, the Capitals were precariously placed at 36 runs for the loss of two wickets.

With spin introduced in the seventh over Shreyas Iyer (43 off 32 balls) and skipper Rishabh Pant (24 off 24 balls) started to repair the damage caused by the loss of the openers.

The duo, who stitched a 62-run partnership, kept the scoreboard ticking, while also hitting the occasional boundaries at the huge Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The stylish Iyer then hit the first maximum of the match over long-off in the 10th over off left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (0/34). As the two Delhi batters found their footing, Rahman was brought back into the attack and the move immediately paid dividends as Pant, looking to hook the ball away, ended up getting an under edge.

Samson then showed his skills with gloves to stump Iyer, who failed to stretch his back foot inside the crease as wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals. Shimron Hetmyer, who was striking the ball well, then upped the ante, hitting three boundaries off Tyagi to plunder 16 runs in the 16th over. Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw? Brad Hogg names Indian youngster who 'could be future leader'

Delhi Capitals (DC) surprised one and all when they retained Rishabh Pant as the captain for the remainder of IPL 2021, ahead of the UAE leg's commencement. While the franchise might have done it to maintain continuity and also as they were on top of the points table under Pant's captaincy in the first leg, many thought Shreyas Iyer would reclaim the captaincy spot after being fully fit and available for the final leg, which is underway in UAE at present.

“When I got the captaincy, I was in a different frame of mind. My decision-making and temperament level was really good. It really helped in the last two years. But obviously, this is part of the decision-making from the franchise. I respect the decision they have made to continue with him (Pant) as captain,” said the right-handed batsman in the press conference after the match.

Iyer added, "As for Rishabh Pant, he is leading really well from the start of the season. That’s why the decision-makers took the call to let him continue till the end of the season. With pressure comes challenges, and my mindset is such that I perform well in pressure situations."

Iyer will be playing for Lancashire in the month-long group stage of Royal London Cup 2021 and will arrive at the Old Trafford in Manchester on July 15. Iyer's signing continues Lancashire's long association with Indian cricket with the likes of Farokh Engineer, Murali Kartik, Dinesh Mongia, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly having played for the club in past. Notably, Lancashire Cricket also became the first-ever English County club to have hosted a pre-season training camp in Mumbai in 2020. Speaking after agreeing to join Lancashire for the 2021 Royal London Cup, Shreyas said: “Lancashire is a legendary name in English Cricket with a long-standing association with Indian Cricket. I am extremely humbled and honoured to carry the legacy forward of greats like Farokh Engineer, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman at Lancashire. “Emirates Old Trafford is a world-class international stadium and I am looking forward to meeting my teammates and the supporters of the Club.” ALSO READ: 'No doubts about that': Virat Kohli confirms India's opening pair for England ODIs Lancashire’s Director of Cricket, Paul Allott, added: “Shreyas is one of the shining lights of a new generation of Indian batsman and a leader, and we’re delighted that an opportunity to bring him to Emirates Old Trafford has presented itself. “With the expectation that we will be fielding a younger side in this year’s Royal London Cup due to the Hundred, it was important that we brought in a top-order batsman with experience at the highest level to enhance our prospects in the tournament. “Shreyas has experience of captaining in an IPL final as well as playing in top-level international fixtures, so his on-field skills, and ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations, will serve our young squad well this summer. “His current form against England has been hugely impressive and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Lancashire Cricket and Emirates Old Trafford later this summer.
While Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have faced each other thrice in IPL 2020, the Mumbai outfit has come out victorious in each occasion. However, Mumbai Indians have never won the final of IPL when batting second and that could be the reason behind DC opting to bat first.

The team atmosphere is really motivated: Shreyas Iyer

“We'll bat. It really worked out pretty well in the last game. When you have a really good total on the board the bowling gets a lot of confidence. They have been champions through the years and even the way they've been playing this season. We have nothing to lose, we have to embrace it and have no regrets at the end of it. The team atmosphere is really motivated, we are in a good mood and have to enjoy the day. We are sticking with the same team,” Iyer said at the toss.

Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw opened the innings for Delhi Capitals and began very well for the team. They put up a 90-run stand for opening wicket. Shaw's confident batting helped him score 64 runs off 43 balls. He was the best batsman for the Delhi Capitals tonight.

'I hope...': Former batsman Kevin Pietersen predicts his IPL 2020 winner

Shreyas Iyer is pretty confident that his consistent performances in past one year has sealed the lingering debate about India's number four slot in white ball cricket.

Having tried the likes of Ambati Rayudu Vijay Shankar, Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni, India recalled the Mumbai youngster in the tour against West Indies, in the aftermath of their semifinal loss to New Zealand in the World Cup.

He impressed against the West Indies but the 25-year-old was a revelation in New Zealand tour earlier this year when he ended up being the top run-getter with one century and two half-centuries in India's 0-3 series whitewash.

"If you have been playing for India at that position for a year now that means you have sealed it. There should be no more questions asked about it," Iyer said in an Instagram chat hosted by his IPL franchise Delhi Capitals.

Iyer scored 217 runs in the series -- the most by an Indian No 4 in a three-match bilateral series.

"When the debate was going on about No 4, performing at No 4 and completely sealing the position was really satisfying."

Iyer however said he's flexible to bat at any position as per the team's requirement.

"But when you are playing for India, you need to be very much flexible at any position or whatever the team requires. I feel I can bat any position depending on the situation," he said.

Having missed out of the World Cup, Iyer was recalled for the Caribbean tour as he struck back-to-back half-centuries at No 5 in Port of Spain in their 2-0 win.

Indian captain Virat Kohli was reminded of his younger days and complimented Iyer saying he was "exactly the same".

"It's really a phenomenal feeling when he talks or compliments his teammates... He's a role model for all the youngsters out there," Iyer said.

Describing Kohli like a lion in the team, he said:

"Whenever he goes out on the field it feels as if he's playing his first game. He's never tired, always energetic like a lion. You see a different body language when he enters the ground, something great to learn from him."

The Delhi Capitals captain further recalled his debut season in 2015 where he ended up getting 439 runs, playing with a fractured index finger.

"It was a dramatic season. During the season after the third game, I fractured my index finger and thought I won't be able to play anymore," he recalled adding how head coach Gary Kirsten egged him on as he went on to clinch the Emerging Player Award.

"But Gary said 'we really need you'. He wanted me to play and told me 'hide somewhere while fielding and just bat for us'.

"I could have done anything for the team. To score those many runs with a fractured finger was like a dream come true. Not many know about this story."

Having got the captaincy baton from Gautam Gambhir midway into their struggling campaign in 2018, Iyer led Delhi Capitals to their first playoffs in seven years last year.

"I knew the situation would come and it would be thrown at me. I was prepared. I really enjoyed the responsibility coming at top. We're youngsters, fearless and showed a lot of maturity as well," he said as the team finally shed off the 'perennial underachievers' tag to make the last-four in 2019.

The self belief was key to DC's success in 2019 after a gap of seven years, said Iyer.

"We had the sense of belief in ourselves and team. Our aim was to make the play-offs."

"We had this one goal in our mind -- to give our 100 per cent. Results didn't really matter.

"Once we knew we did our preparation, we should not get bogged down and regret. We trained really hard and that stood out pretty well."

DC were out in play-offs but for the first time in many years, looked like a team that could go the distance. "We did and proved that we're capable of winning the IPL. We hope the fans give the same energy this year. We don't know what will happen or will it be held closed-door... Hopefully we will win the trophy this year," he concluded.

I think I have sealed No 4 position: Shreyas Iyer

With the entire sporting calendar getting ripped into pieces due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the athletes have been restricted to remain in their houses and not get involved in public events. For the Indian cricket team and it's players, the month of March, April, May or for that matter, the entire 2020 was supposed to be jam-packed but the COVID-19 outbreak has shattered every plan.

While Indian players continue to remain off the field due to coronavirus outbreak, Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer were seen having a bit of fun in their residence. Iyer took to social media platform Twitter to post a couple of photographs and a video in which the flamboyant batsman posted some fun banter and behind the scene scenario from the first photograph in which Iyer is seen flexing a luxurious wristwatch.
