Saudi Arabia serves as a critical link in the IMEC’s northern corridor, connecting the Arabian Gulf to Europe. The proposed rail network will traverse the kingdom, linking ports in the UAE like Fujairah to the Israeli port of Haifa via Saudi cities like Haradh and Riyadh.
India has been engaging with countries who were part of the signing document for the corridor in Delhi. During PM Modi's France visit in February this year, the inauguration of the consulate in Marseille was seen as key to the corridor, which is seen linking the city with India's financial capital Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Italy is hoping for Trieste, a northeastern port city to be the key point to the corridor. Italy nominated Ambassador Francesco Talò as its IMEC representative just ahead of Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani's India visit next week.

US President Donald Trump's visit to the Middle Eastern nations comes amid his efforts to end the ongoing wars in Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine. But what exactly is on his agenda? Let's dig deeper to know more.
As his first international trip, Trump is planning to travel to Saudi Arabia in mid-May, since returning to the White House, Axios reported citing two officials and a source with knowledge of the president's travel.
His decision to visit Saudi on his first foreign trip also points to how close the relationship between the Trump administration and Gulf countries has become.
Earlier on March 6, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he would likely visit Saudi Arabia "over the next month and a half".

"This time I said I would go if you put up a trillion dollars to American companies. Meaning the purchase over four years of a trillion dollars. They agreed to do that. So I am gonna be going there," he added.
Notably, Trump's first foreign trip during his previous term was also to Saudi Arabia.

Is Israel on agenda?

As the US administration is making efforts to break a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas and release, Trump has been giving warnings to the Palestinian militant group to release the hostages or "hell will break loose".
Moreover, a Trump administration official said that planning for the trip to Saudi Arabia is underway.
"An opportunity for international travel for the President is something that is being looked at. We don't yet have a specific plan, and we will provide that information when it is official," a White House official said.
"Talks will focus on discussing foreign investments, strengthening relationships with Gulf nations and ending conflict in the Middle East," the official said.

What about Ukraine?

Saudi Arabia is currently involved in holding Ukraine peace talks to help end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Last month, US and Russian officials held talks in Saudi Arabia marking another step in Trump's attempts to negotiate a limited ceasefire in Ukraine.
Following talks with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders last week, Trump helped secure an agreement in principle for a one-month halt to attacks on energy infrastructure. However, questions remain over when the ceasefire will begin and whether it will cover more than just power plants, such as hospitals, bridges, and other key services.
However, the Saudis want the visit to take place after a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine is reached, a source with knowledge of the planned visit said.

Had Trump been the president, that would have never happened," he said in a press conference offering the Russian view on Tuesday’s talks on Ukraine. (With inputs from agencies)

High-level talks between US and Russian officials are set to take place in Riyadh on Tuesday (Feb 18), but the United States has dismissed any suggestion that the meeting will involve negotiations on Ukraine.
US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on Monday (Feb 17) that the discussions should not be seen as part of a formal negotiation process.
"I don't think that people should view this as something that is about details or moving forward in some kind of a negotiation," she said. She added that President Trump had instructed officials to "follow up effectively" on his recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Talks aim to reset US-Russia relations

The meeting, the first high-level engagement between the two countries since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, is expected to focus on repairing strained diplomatic ties. While both sides have downplayed the likelihood of any breakthrough, the discussions have raised concerns in Kyiv and across Europe.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv was not invited to the talks and voiced frustration over the lack of consultation. "We do not know anything about these discussions and cannot recognise any agreements about us without us," he said.

Possible Trump-Putin summit on agenda

One of the key topics under discussion is the possibility of a summit between Presidents Trump and Putin. Trump is reportedly eager to push for a swift resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine, while Moscow sees an opportunity to press Washington on longstanding issues, particularly the US military presence in Europe.

Ahead of the talks, the Kremlin emphasised its desire to move past what it described as "abnormal relations" with Washington. Russia also made it clear that it does not believe European nations should have a role in any negotiations.

'Not Ukraine negotiation': US, Russia to hold high-stakes talks in Saudi Arabia, but not about Kyiv peace

EU top team to visit Ukraine for war's 3rd anniversary. EU chief and her team to visit Ukraine next week.

Breaking: Trip a day after Russia-US officials meeting in Riyadh

Senior US officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, are travelling to Saudi Arabia to start negotiations aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, two sources told NBC News channel. The talks, it appears, will not have a presence from Ukraine.
Witkoff confirmed that he will travel to Saudi Arabia Sunday night (Feb 16), where the first face-to-face talks between the US and Russia on Ukraine are set to be held.

Witkoff added that US officials are also speaking separately with Ukrainian officials, insisting that "Ukraine is part of the talks".
But he gave no indication he expected officials from Kyiv to be in Saudi Arabia.
A BBC report meanwhile said Kyiv will not be attending, despite President Donald Trump saying this week that Ukrainian representatives would participate.
Witcoff added he would be having meetings "at the direction" of Trump and he hopes for "good progress."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov meanwhile told reporters, "This is a powerful signal that we will now try to solve problems through dialogue."

The planned talks follow a phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After that conversation, Trump wrote on Truth Social, “We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations. We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately.”

Ukraine’s concerns over exclusion from talks

The possibility of talks taking place without Ukraine’s direct involvement is likely to spark criticism from Kyiv. On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the Trump-Putin call, insisting that his country must be included in any discussions about its future.
"Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs," Zelensky said during a speech at the Munich Security Conference. "No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine, no decisions about Europe without Europe."

US-Russia diplomacy resumes

As part of the Trump administration’s efforts to restart diplomatic engagement with Russia, Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday while travelling from Munich to Israel.
Rubio “reaffirmed President Trump’s commitment to finding an end to the conflict in Ukraine,” according to a statement from State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.

The Russian summary of the call stated that both diplomats would maintain regular communication and begin preparations for a future summit between their presidents. It also indicated that discussions would cover broader international issues, including Ukraine, the Middle East and Palestine.
Rubio is set to visit Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates following his stop in Israel—his first diplomatic trip to the Middle East.

Uncertainty over European involvement

During a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference, US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg confirmed that Ukrainian representatives would take part in discussions to end the war. However, when asked if European nations would also have a seat at the table, he said, “The answer is no.”
Kellogg explained that negotiations would primarily involve “two protagonists” Russia and Ukraine, while the US would act as an intermediary. When pressed for clarification, he confirmed that Americans would also be at the table.
He later added that not being present in direct talks does not mean a country’s interests are being ignored.
Defending the need for discussions with Putin, Kellogg said, “Whether you like it or not, you have to talk to adversaries.”
He also referenced former US defence secretary James Mattis in his answer.
“As a great secretary of defense, Gen Mattis, once said: 'I may not like this son of a b----, but I got to talk to him.'”

Trump’s team heads to Saudi Arabia for Ukraine peace talks with Russia, without Ukraine

Saudi Arabia is hoping to mediate between the Trump administration and Iran to work towards a new agreement that would curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, according to a CNN report.
The report states that Saudi officials are worried Iran may now be more likely to develop nuclear weapons. This concern comes as Iran’s regional allies, which once acted as a deterrent against Israeli attacks, have weakened.

Although US President Donald Trump has shown his desire to negotiate a new deal, Iran’s stance has been inconsistent. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recently said that negotiations with the United States were “not smart."

Saudi-Iran ties

In the past, Saudi Arabia supported the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major world powers but later backed Trump’s decision to withdraw from it in 2018.
A year after the US pullout, a major drone and missile attack hit Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities, temporarily cutting production in half. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility, but the US blamed Iran. However, despite this, the US did not take military action in defence of Saudi Arabia.
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran have improved significantly since then. In March 2023, the two countries agreed to restore diplomatic ties in a deal brokered by China.

According to the CNN report, Saudi officials fear that if Iran feels isolated, it may be more likely to develop nuclear weapons. Officials in Riyadh see a new agreement as a way to prevent this.

Trump's repeated calls for a new deal with Iran

Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly called for a new deal with Iran. Last week, he posted on Truth Social, “I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon. Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens are GREATLY EXAGGERATED."

He added, “I would much prefer a Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement, which will allow Iran to grow peacefully and prosper. We should start working on it immediately and celebrate in the Middle East when it is signed. God Bless the Middle East!”
However, not everyone in Iran is convinced by Trump’s statements. On Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian questioned whether he was truly committed to a new nuclear deal. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Khamenei has remained sceptical, saying last week that talks with the US are “not smart, wise, or honourable” due to its withdrawal from the 2015 agreement. However, he did not completely rule out future discussions with Washington.

Saudi Arabia is taking the lead in efforts to formulate an alternative plan for Gaza to counter Trump’s vision, which reportedly aims to transform the area into a tourist hub while removing its Palestinian residents. According to sources cited by Reuters, discussions will centre on a Gulf-backed reconstruction initiative and potential measures to diminish Hamas’s influence in Gaza.
Saudi Arabia and other Arab Nations were taken aback by Trump’s proposal, which allegedly involves relocating many Palestinians to Jordan and Egypt, an idea widely dismissed by them.

An Arab government source told Reuters that at least four alternative proposals have been developed, with an Egyptian-led initiative gaining traction. Details shared by Egyptian security sources suggest an advanced reconstruction plan, including a buffer zone and a physical barrier to prevent the construction of tunnels between Gaza and Egypt, as per the Reuters report.
Once debris is cleared, 20 temporary residential zones will be established, with around 50 Egyptian and international companies involved in the rebuilding efforts. Funding is expected to come from international and Gulf sources. There are even suggestions that the fund could be named the Trump Fund for Reconstruction, an Arab government official said.

The latest Egyptian proposal outlines the creation of a national Palestinian committee to manage Gaza, excluding Hamas. It also calls for international participation in reconstruction while ensuring Palestinians are not displaced. Additionally, the plan advocates progress towards a two-state solution.
Commenting on the upcoming Arab discussions, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday, “Right now the only plan – they don’t like it – but the only plan is the Trump plan. So if they’ve got a better plan, now’s the time to present it.”

Saudi Arabia has implemented a new regulation requiring Pakistani travellers to get a polio vaccine, before entering the country for Umrah. Passengers must obtain a certificate from either a government or private hospital, To confirm their vaccination status. According to the new rule, travellers must receive either an Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) within the last 12 months or an Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) within the last 6 months before they arrive in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has implemented changes to its visa policy, effective from February 1, 2025, restricting travellers from 14 countries to single-entry visas. The measure aims to prevent unauthorised Hajj pilgrims from entering the country on long-term visit visas.
The new restrictions apply to travellers from Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen. As part of this policy shift, Saudi authorities have suspended one-year multiple-entry visas for tourism, business, and family visits for travellers from these nations.

Key Changes in Visa Regulations

Under the revised rules, visitors from the 14 affected countries can only obtain single-entry visas with a validity of 30 days. The maximum duration of stay has also been set at 30 days. However, Hajj, Umrah, diplomatic, and residency visas remain unaffected by these restrictions.
Saudi officials have stated that the decision follows concerns over the misuse of multiple-entry visas. Some travellers had reportedly entered the country on long-term visit visas and remained beyond their permitted stay to work or participate in Hajj without proper authorisation.

Reason for the Policy Change

Saudi Arabia enforces strict regulations on Hajj participation, allocating specific quotas to each country. In recent years, concerns over overcrowding have intensified due to unregistered pilgrims attending the pilgrimage. The issue became particularly critical in 2024 when over 1,200 pilgrims died due to extreme heat and overcrowding. Authorities identified unauthorised pilgrims as a contributing factor to the crisis.
By limiting visa access, the Saudi government aims to ensure that only registered and authorised pilgrims participate in Hajj, reducing the risks associated with overcrowding.
Officials have described the suspension of multiple-entry visas as a temporary measure. However, no timeline has been provided for a review of the decision. The government plans to assess the impact of the new visa policy before considering any further changes.
